I haven’t gotten to painting in V1.0, so I don’t know what has or hasn’t been removed. What I do know is, all those painting textures come at a premium. They’re all in one big texture atlas, like a quilt, that has to be loaded at all times.

In other games, they could be streamed in and out of memory individually. But that’s problematic for a voxel build anything anywhere kind of game. That’s why we don’t have a ton of options.

If a texture was removed, I would speculate it was either for the sake of reducing texture memory overall (part of that optimization stage everybody wants), or else it was on the chopping block to make room for some other texture - one thought to get more utilization.

Yeah. Wonder why they chose a voxel game. This isnt a subterranean game aside from mining, I interact with the voxels quite rarely. Now the cubeoid shapes that i build on the surface? Sure, I interact with those. But the whole "voxel world" was pointless if you ask me. Why? on an 8km map 7km of it is uninteresting empty space. OoOoOoOo gotta run those SI checks on that lead node when i fly by it so we can determine that it doesnt weigh too much for the dirt beneath it, and the rock beneath that dirt, and the dirt beneath that rock. The SI thing caused pain as well.

I understand they were going for a fully destructible world but I wonder if that meant something in their head or if it was "just because".

If you peruse these threads for years and look up the word "voxel" its very rarely mentioned in a positive light. Usually its mentioned as a handicap.

They pitched a Fallout + The Walking Dead + Minecraft game. Then they made it look so good, people stopped comparing it to Minecraft. One can argue they’re victims of their own success. :buzzed: I’ve advocated for years to e.g. re-implement procedural caves, in part because it’s playing to the strength of a voxel engine that other games couldn’t do. But I sense that’s getting off topic here.
