Sorting them into folder on the hard drive wouldn't affect anything in game. Building Themes is the fastest way to sort buildings into themes. You can also create the .xml file for Building Themes manually, but you need the names of the buildings and it's honestly just faster to use the ingame menu for the mod.

Maybe I've gone too far on the assets/mods because it just slows to a crawl when I try to add them into themes. Is there a suggested max on assets?

Doing it the way you do would certainly limit the numbers some.

Mostly I'm trying to get an early 20th century look to my cities. There's a lot of those buildings available, but I'm thinking many of them are just ploppable and I prefer them to grow.

You are using Building Themes right? As in the menu that you work with while in your city, and not the Styles which are created through the Content Manager before loading a city.

You don't actually have to do that. You can just leave the themes. If the buildings in a theme isn't loaded, the theme will just display a warning. I have lots of themes which don't have all their buildings loaded all the time, I just avoid using them on the cities that don't have the assets for them. :)

Very true, I just like everything to look just perfect. :)

If an asset is in the wrong place in the menu for instance I always use the editor to put it in the menu I want. Most common is plazas not in the plaza section of the parks menu and parking lots in the train menu.

Haha, good to hear I'm not the only one who's done that! :P Most of my parks are local versions so they're in the right categories. Would be nice to have a mod that would let us do it in game without having to do edits. And ideally some extra new tabs for stuff like parking lots that doesn't really fit properly anywhere.
