Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.

Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If those don't help, DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log

There has been no change to this game since last year, so this is some local issue or change.

When you say a clean reinstall, did that include making sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again?

If so, Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

If there is a memory leak in this game, it needs to be reported in Bug Reports, - we in tech support can do nothing about such matters.

That said, we'd know if every player got this every 10 minutes! Can you increase your paging file, as that message suggests?

Any mods involved?

If you run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user, is it any better then?

We have three possible workarounds that may solve it:

Disable IPv6
- Close CK3
- Go to Control Panel > View Network status and tasks > Change adapter settings (left side)
- Find your Hamachi Connection and Disable it
- Find your Internet connection adapter (for me, it was WiFi)
- Right click your internet adapter and select properties
- Scroll down to find "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and uncheck the box
- Select Ok
- Start up CK3 and should work.

Disable all other network adapters
Go to Windows Control panel.
Click on Network & Internet.
Click on View Network Status.
Quick Tip: You can also quickly access these settings by right-clicking the network icon in the taskbar and selecting the Network & Internet settings option.
Click on Change adapter options.
Right-click all network adapters that are not connected to the internet and select the Disabl... Read more

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK3
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK3 AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK3 or Documents CK3 locations, before installing again.

Good luck!

is the game in fact capped at 60? You can see fps rates via a Steam setting or several other apps and utilities.

Another driver came out since I posted that, dated Feb 2023 - is that the one you are on now?

Anyway let's get all those text files again please, maybe I missed something.

And what happens if you run ck3.exe directly now?

So far as I know it is intended that you only ever get the latest version of any mod. I'm not aware of any way of preventing the auto-update (whether in Steam or our mod site) aside from like being offline!

You might check with the good folks in the User Mods forum, they'll probably know if this is possible or not.

We didn't get the detailed launcher log which gets created with that --pdxlDebug launch option. It would normally have a name like launcher-23-02-01.log - do you have that?

Also, some other things to try. The 1603/1605 errors we see there are typically a previous other installation stuck, or a problem in the Windows update/install processes.

If you see msiexec running in Task manager-processes, kill it and try this launcher install again please.

Otherwise run the Update app in Windows, does it load okay, find anything to apply - whether a patch, update, or whole new Windows 10 version? If so do that and reboot, then try this launcher install again please.

If still no good, do you see Paradox Launcher v2 in the Windows Control Panel to uninstall? If so does it uninstall cleanly, or get an error doing that? You can use this MS tool to clear the stuck install/uninstall:

It will always go to the place set in Windows for your User Documents folder. If that is on OneDrive, that's where it will be.

If you don't want to store your documents on MS's cloud, you'll need to reconfigure Windows so they are held locally again.

Is this a new Windows 11 installation (ie not an upgrade from Win10)? If so this is a current problem in the launcher installer, we're really not sure why it affects some users and not others.

Could you please do the following? It will generate a debug log that the launcher team can use to "deep dive" into what actually happens with the launcher.

Right click the game in question in Steam > Properties > Launch Options
  • Paste in this: --pdxlDebug
  • Run the game
  • Once it fails to launch, locate the logs in the following place

%LocalAppData%\Paradox Interactive\launcher-v2\logs\
(example: C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Paradox Interactive\launcher-v2\logs\)

Please attach all logs in that folder and we will get the launcher team to check them out.

74c is getting up there, but not quite to the point of causing problems - that happens about 80c or so. It never ever gets there?

That aside, I don't really have a lot to suggest. I might reverse my previous stance - can you set Windows to say 60hz refresh rate and see if that affects the game?

I'm not suggesting you change your computer's refresh rate, just that within the game. Can you try that please?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

That's odd because it still says:
"setting_framerate_cap"={
version=0
value="off"
}
And there should be a paragraph starting "refreshRate"= ... is the game in fact capped at 60? You can see fps rates via a Steam setting or several other apps and utilities.

That dxdiag again records no crashes or other problems in anything, which is unnatural!

But you may as well update that nVidia driver to the 2023 one now.

Then test with a new campaign, not any existing one - does that help?

Buying a new DLC will never fix a crash; bugs are fixed in free patches not paid DLCs.

kaetryxx said: (copied this explanation exactly from another user who posted today; new bug, maybe?)
The game has not been updated since mid-December, so I don't think so - an old bug that's just occurred to you for the first time, possibly.

If as you say there are no mods used in this campaign, and it reliably crashes on load, it pretty much has to be a game bug. Please make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach the save there for QA to look i... Read more

Please try the following:

- unsubscribe from all mods in BOTH the Steam Workshop and the Paradox mod site mods.paradoxplaza.com
- delete the folder Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/mod/
- delete the file Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/mods_registry.json (if present)
- delete the file Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/launcher-v2.sqlite (if present)
- run the game up and check the launcher is okay with no mod or other errors
- subscribe to a few mods

- run the game up and see if those mods are now available to you.

I hope that does it for you!

If it happens fairly reliably in a particular save, best to make a new thread in Bug Reports and attach it there for QA to look into. Thanka!

Is it that it now starts okay but crashes while playing? Or it's gone back to crashing on launch? There are no crashes recorded in that dxdiag.

From that settings file it looks like the refresh rate is not capped at 60 - can you please try that?
