Hi there!

I'm a newbie and wanted to share my first-time experience and experience as a new (Dauntless) player in general. I have previous experience with Monster Hunter games and of course Dauntless is a game like Monster Hunter, so I am not new to the genre/style of the game. If you don't mind I'd like to get straight to the points:

Feedback Points:

  1. The game feels extremely freemium for a new player that plays the tutorial.

For people that don't know what freemium is, it's basicly a game that's free-to-play but the devs want you to invest your money into it.

Now don't get me wrong. I know the game is free-to-play and that money has to be earned someway or another. But it gets obnoxious pretty fast when even NPC's are telling you that you can spend Platinum. (For example: The Stylist tells you about the the Daily Bounty Tokens and that you can earn 4 tokens per day if you flip a coin in the well. ''But if you want more tokens you can use Platinum''. 4 tokens per day is enough so I don't mind it that if you want to have more, you'd have to spend IRL money, just don't shove it into our face via a NPC.

  1. The Monster Slaying in the early stages of the game feel kind of lackluster and almost sad for the Behemoth your fighting against.

In the early stages it feels incredibly overpowered that you can just go ham into a Behemoth with 5 other people backing you up if things go south. The thing here is that when the Behemoth hits you, it can hit you pretty hard. The danger of the Behemoth itself is there, it just gets kind of nullified by other players. Because even if you do get hit, the Behemoth basicly gets punished for it because now there are 4 to 5 other players smashing into it .

I have to say though. I haven't progressed far into the game at all. This is just how it feels as a beginner. I haven't fought against any endgame Behemoths yet so perhaps as far as I know those could be the real danger and a 6 player party actually feels balanced and viable. I am just sharing the beginners experience here. (Although on a sidenote I did see another post here that the endgame Behemoths are too easy).

Anyway, these were my two major feedback point as a new player. But I don't want to end the post here by just saying what could be done better and leave. So here are some positives/plus points to the game as well!

  1. Crossplay, Cross-Progression and Online Hub

Perhaps kind of a no brainer, but it is extremely nice to see in a game like this! The queue times are never longer than a minute and it gives me some sort of unified feeling whenever I am in a lobby with PC, Switch, Playstation and Xbox. So well done to that Devs!

  1. Combat, Weapons and Armor

The combat feels impactful and swift. It's a quite a bit more action-packed and faster paced than Monster Hunter, but that's a nice shake up in my opinion. The armors look amazing as well! You can defintely tell the difference between a fresh player and a Veteran and that's the kind of visual progression which I like. The weapons are also awesome. Elemental swords are looking quite good and the difference in sound and effects when you equip them is a nice touch!

  1. Stylized Graphics

This one is a bit subjective, but I quite like the stylized graphics! It's also a good idea because it makes the game less demanding and makes it playable for every platform. Which is also a nice pluspoint combined with the crossplay.

Devs, you have an amazing game in your hands right here. It feels good to play and the progression looks fun (haven't experienced a lot of it). So because I'm prepared to spend a lot of time into it, I wanted to give the feedback mentioned above. I also think it's important that newer players give their feedback instead of veterans only!

Thanks for reading, cheers :)

Hey there, thanks for taking the time to write up your feedback!

The game feels extremely freemium for a new player that plays the tutorial.

We wrote up a post a couple of weeks ago to try and be transparent on how we want monetization to be and feel in our game, if you haven't given it a read yet, please do, I'd love to hear if you still feel the same way and what you think we could improve on that front.

The Monster Slaying in the early stages of the game feel kind of lackluster and almost sad for the Behemoth your fighting against.

That is unfortunately an issue we are aware of and closely monitoring, so thank you for consolidating that feedback. We have a couple of not-directly-related changes in the pipes that might improve this to some extend (private Hunting Grounds, level gating, Trials power normalization, alternative aetherhearts acquisition options, etc), so we'll keep monitoring, but we definitely want to make that experience better.

I'll answer both of your answers here: that's very good feedback!

I linked this post because I wanted to highlight the "be clear with the options the player have so that they can make an educated decision on whether something is worth their money or their time" concept, and I think you have really put a finger on the thin line we're walking here where we have to balance that transparency with immersion/game flow.

Reading your post, it seems like we may be leaning too much on one side here, so thank you for pointing it out, I'll make sure to pass on the feedback. 😊
