One moment, just finishing with another customer.

AND IT'S GONE! Have a good day.

Sorry about that, busy day at the Bank.

Today we'll explore the building everyone waits for. Welcome to the First National Bank of Pandora.

Behold, Room 2. The second set you'll want to effectively manage your government. If you're just joining us, here's part 1: https://www.reddit.com/r/EcoGlobalSurvival/comments/n68y24/law_of_the_land_pandoras_lawyer_journal_week_1/

To get kicked off, you'll need to build your Mint. She takes Gold bars and Bricks, so be prepared to call on your Potter and Smelter for help. You will also need a t2 room, so get yourself a few hundred Lumber or Bricks.

Not Nic Cage proof, classic mistake

You will also need something to mint your currency with. I love goooooooollld! But, you can use almost anything. I recommend you do some research on this subject if you're lost. I don't think I could teach the bullet points of economics and fiat currency here. There's plenty of theories and suggestions, look around and make your own judgment.

Some good choices: Paper, Wood pulp, Land Claim Papers, Urchins. Moving on.

The Gold Standard, for reference

Now we have our currency! Keep in mind, this "global currency" is useless if you can't find a way to circulate it, and get it in your players' Bank accounts. Queue the Currency Exchange.

You'll have to play around with the Currency Exchange. No way around it, especially if you had a server full of personal currencies. I don't want to get too specific here, I feel like it would be misleading. Everyone's numbers will be very different for very different reasons. Many servers won't see one, more on why later. Let's move on to the Bank.

I wanted to highlight here: You can label specific people AND titles.

You'll need an active Government Office. I haven't mentioned it yet, as I was trying to go in order of "necessary". You can use names and personal accounts in the meantime. Pay close attention to who you label as "Account Manager" vs "Users".

The important note here: You cannot make a Government Bank account until you have been elected to a position with Government Banking permissions. Again, not *necessary* but useful later for tax free exchanges.

For our final interactive table, we approach the Treasury. You will again need a Government Office, and hold an official position to use it. That position needs to have Government Treasury Permissions. You will again want to make your own judgement with numbers here. If you have no idea, I recommend starting at 1% sales tax, and keeping an eye on how that goes. I'll tell you now, it's unlikely to successfully fund a large project, but a good thing to get a feel for.

For example, on Pandora, we voted for a total of 3% sales tax, 3% direct transfer tax, and 1% contract tax. Many of our citizens like to use contracts for communication to offline players, and specific projects. I wanted to continue incentivizing this approach.

Thanks for Reading!

Unfortunately, many private servers will never see this progression. Very often we see "premade government and currency".

While I understand this compulsion completely, I believe this common practice essentially erases an entire sector of the Eco experience. Eco was designed as a teaching tool, and it does a great job of this. This few days to 1 week experience showcases extremely well the very real struggles of an early civilization. Currency becomes a glaring necessity. Strategies and gameplay are completely different than the week after. Many citizens will hoard materials until the currency is complete. Others will intelligently profit, many will make "barter stores". I recommend trying to "rough it" at least once, I guarantee you will learn something.

That being said, I don't want to appear to discourage the "day 1 currency" practice. I understand the feeling, and the purpose. For your server, maybe it really does make more sense.

If this is the only kind cycle you've played, here's my challenge to you: Kick off an entire cycle with no admin help, and stick to it. Let the meteor fall if it may!

Bonus Fountain

Someone was nice enough to fill the fountain with lemonade. What a generous person.

You can also fill the fountain with blood and other weird fluids, depending on where the sun stands. The Eco gods sometimes aren't easy to understand.

Nice read as always, though I'm a "bartering is useless and boring, start with a cool government (or even society) concept and global currency and work flexibly from within" person and can only recommend everyone to try that as well - it's great. It's also typically the servers that have the most retention. And the meteor may still fall, as White Tiger likes to say. ;)
