s what's the scariest fact i learned about
s the larva i think it's that they like
s inject
s kind of acid or
s venom into creatures to eat them that
s like liquefies their insides and then
s they like slurp it out um that's pretty
s gross
s that can't be real
s oh
s their maxillae are hollow allowing a
s digestive secretion
s to be injected in the prey
s the organs of an aphid can for example
s be dissolved by this
s in 90 seconds
s what the

s thank you for continuing your journey
s into learning with omnipractical
s training video number two
s i am dr sheila sholand
s as you learned in our first video this
s division here is to help you learn about
s the insects we are studying
s how those creatures thrive in their
s environments
s and what happens when test sub
s hostile threats
s are introduced into their environment
s in this video my lab assistant
s the wonderful walt
s and i will help you learn about three
s different insects who are currently
s roaming the backyard
s as we speak
s the larva
s the infected larva
s and my favorite
s the stink bug
s to get things rolling we will ask our
s scientists an important question
s why put something so horrific as the
s larva into
s the backyard why the larva is a great
s question
s uh and one that i can answer with
s because it's gross and horrible
s and the more
s gross and horrible things we put in the
s game
s the better how did the idea for the
s larva come about
s uh that's that's a fun story actually
s we're talking about needing a
s type of creature that's kind of between
s um
s an ant and spider as far as threat level
s kaz
s was talking about i think it was kaz he
s was talking about how we were really
s missing like a like a goblin type
s creature just like a real
s jerk that's in the backyard that really
s just messes up with the player's day and
s we did a lot of just
s thinking and
s whiteboarding and brainstorming and we
s ended up with a little larva
s and
s we thought just the look and the feel
s could be immediately
s um described as hostile i feel like it
s it suits its role really well which is
s this sort of like
s like mid-tier enemy that's really
s dangerous early game
s but then can become a real punching bag
s for you later on
s you're telling me they just they put
s something gross into the backyard
s just because they wanted to
s clearly that isn't something they'd be
s super happy about doing right
s right
s who would want to hug that thing i was
s overjoyed when i saw the larva because
s it was
s exactly
s what i hoped our creatures would be
s which is it it rides this like
s this weird line uh given our like
s playful fun art style
s the first time i saw the larva come to
s life it was
s pretty awesome it was kind of the first
s creature that we made that got me really
s excited because it's just to have this
s idea of like we need something gross
s being able to make
s something that looks like that
s uh but also fits with
s the the overall look of the game which
s is you know bright and colorful
s i think is a testament to
s ian's skill as an artist it's got like
s this creepy like gross look to it that i
s enjoyed um working with and i got to
s have fun with that when
s kind of uh coming up with the moves it
s does and what like it's attacks and
s stuff
s you know
s can you imagine if something that
s terrifying
s that horrifying
s just flooded the backyard
s how how would you
s how would you
s how would i even deal with that
s what my favorite
s difficulty that we encountered is uh
s a bug that was caused
s by
s this this early setup
s of design work that we had that
s accidentally made it into the game it
s was something that was supposed to be
s commented out because it was just a test
s but uh it wasn't
s and it was
s that the more
s uh defensive structures you built around
s your base the more larva would be
s summoned into the world
s some of the earlier players will will
s remember this but they used to be
s horrible like the world was overrun with
s them they would come at your base and
s destroy everything constantly uh there
s were like waves of 20 plus larva just
s like roaming around killing everything
s so we ended up with uh what were called
s the larvae swarms where you would get
s like
s dozens of these things in the game
s and
s it was it was a real horror show
s go to commercial
s uh this is a vhs i don't care
s go to commercial if tapes don't have
s commercials go to one
s when you think about your home there is
s one name you can trust above all the
s rest and that is ominous practical
s technologies and why not continue to
s show your trust by letting almanan take
s care of your thirst by protecting your
s beverage in this ominant approved mug
s and let others know you support the
s greatest company in the state
s ominant practical technologies
s that product looked quite amazing
s and i know
s i certainly want one
s moving on from those scary larva
s well what's next
s oh
s oh great
s a more grotesque version of an already
s creepy bug
s awesome
s the one thing that we do look at when
s we're kind of developing a lot of these
s new biomes
s do we have existing creatures that we
s can morph or change to defy players
s expectations and to change up their
s behavior set and
s we looked at all the creatures what
s would be cool to be infected
s and
s the infected larva was one of those
s creatures that rose to the top of our
s brainstorming sessions when we're doing
s the haze i think it blends the
s uh more you know naturalistic elements
s of our game with the wilder zany science
s parts of the game and so
s when it comes to something like the
s infected larva it's basically like well
s we look at you know
s we're adding more infected creatures to
s the game what what do we have available
s to us and
s what do we think would be a good
s fit for this puzzle piece of like a new
s creature that we need the infected
s creatures are our own kind of thing
s right um they're not super based on
s reality so we have
s the ability to make
s kind of fill in gaps that are missing
s and make kind of whatever we want and so
s the infected larva of what what i wanted
s with that guy was basically just like
s chaos for the player the day-to-day
s goals of the infected larva are just to
s ruin your day
s like
s they wake up in the morning and they
s think
s how can i make your day specifically
s worse
s the infected larva is pretty interesting
s as a combat opponent it's one thing that
s has like a
s explosive hazard that you have to avoid
s so it kind of makes
s the melee dance
s a little bit more interesting where you
s have to kind of pay attention to see you
s know when that explosion happens and
s back off so some of the challenges with
s all the infected creatures actually is
s um they're on their own kind of team
s which means if they interact with any of
s the other creatures in the backyard
s they're pretty much going to attack them
s um and it's a it's a tough balancing act
s letting creatures attack each other but
s then also
s kind of not just flooding the player
s with free items if that makes sense um
s so it it's tough to
s introduce a creature that's aggressive
s to everything else but then also
s keep it kind of tight in an area where
s it can't just wreak havoc on everything
s um additionally all the explosions that
s the infected creatures cause
s um
s topple grass blades and harvests and
s break harvestables so if we're not too
s careful you might see it with like the
s infected ladybugs in the
s uh spread out throughout the yard
s they'll just like level entire fields of
s grass and it gets pretty dangerous
s now that we're done talking about
s those monsters
s it's time to talk about one of my
s favorite bugs
s the stink bug
s [Music]
s what
s haven't you seen their mouths
s they're so adorable
s i think the stink bug was one of the
s early creatures that we did in the game
s um
s one of the
s things that we really liked about stink
s bugs is one i think we all have
s as kids as adults i think we all have
s encounters with stink bugs we're making
s a game about bugs of course there's
s going to be a snake bug in it
s so the stink bug actually has a
s sort of interesting origin where it
s comes from a very game design need which
s is we want
s all the creatures
s in the yard to feel
s distinct
s no pun intended from one another so one
s of the good ways that you have of
s distinguishing creatures is with their
s attacks and what the stinkbug gets us is
s this um
s area of effect
s attack
s right they they
s especially in a multiplayer game
s you can have you know all of your
s friends surround something and beat it
s up and kill it real quick but if
s suddenly you have these areas that you
s can't go into because they're
s hazardous horrible poison gas we can we
s can use that
s as a new
s combat experience
s that feels extremely distinct from
s something like
s a spider or a ladybug
s that has these up-close attacks
s once you start getting used to playing
s and getting comfortable with the combat
s and starting to level up your equipment
s and getting better equipment
s you can start taking on these challenges
s which are you know
s such as the stink bug which are a little
s bit on the outskirts of the grasslands
s and they provide kind of that gate for
s us of like hey before you can really
s progress past the grasslands you should
s take on some of these
s more
s kind of bigger tankier creatures
s and see how you fare so like it's it's a
s little bit of a test for the the player
s hey kid
s you're bored yeah
s do you want to paint no
s too messy
s do you want to play a game
s no
s too stationary
s do you want to draw
s no
s i only know how to draw lines well then
s check this out
s why did we go to a commercial
s sponsors
s what do you mean sponsors we own ev
s oh
s we're rolling yeah
s so
s stink bugs seemed like a challenge
s but what was the most challenging aspect
s about bringing them into the backyard
s hmm so some of the difficulties with
s stink bug i would say are um similar to
s something that we've dealt with with all
s of our larger bugs which is just their
s size
s they're really big they get caught up on
s things
s um
s and it can be difficult for them to
s navigate around the yard so that that's
s actually the source of the grass blades
s bending
s when a large creature moves past them uh
s it serves two purposes the first of
s which is to allow larger creatures like
s the stink bug or the wolf spider to
s navigate through the yard
s unhindered by this uh the other effect
s is
s something that you can call the jurassic
s park effect
s where when you see
s the the grass waving in the distance you
s know something big is out there and it
s creates this really cool emotional
s moment originally the stink bug was
s actually immune to the haze gas because
s we were like gas
s it's all the same like
s if it's immune to its own gas it means
s the haze gas so we initially placed it
s as like the main creature in the haze
s but i didn't really like that because
s the solution to kind of the haze is to
s equip the gas mask but then also
s equipping the gas mask makes stink bug
s fights really easy so
s it was kind of like a double solution
s for for one or for two problems so
s eventually
s we kind of pivoted so that they inhabit
s a lot of dead grass areas but they are
s not immune to the haze and luckily we
s were able to pivot the haze creatures
s into
s kind of the chaotic infected
s explosion escape that it is now yes i
s did have to say they were adorable
s i wasn't lying
s have you seen how they look
s when they first wake up
s pure
s magic
s nature at work
s the world correcting
s all their wrongs so the stink bug waking
s up
s uh and stretching and farting is just
s like
s it's just great like there there's so
s much personality that goes into all
s these creatures
s that it really makes them feel like more
s than just
s a mindless insect so that's actually uh
s two animations um
s when they wake up they
s they don't necessarily have to do that
s but it's usually
s um
s they wake up unhappy and their only path
s to happiness is really to gas so
s naturally every day
s that usually means that they wake up
s stretch and then release gas the the
s thing we wanted to i wanted to achieve
s with the stink bug is i wanted to be
s like this bag of gas when and you could
s see it like it inflates to this
s like almost ball shape with filled with
s gas and it's uh i just wanted to get
s that we worked a bit to get that certain
s feel and shape to it so that was i was
s proud of that one that came out the way
s we wanted to i think it looks pretty
s good and looks pretty good it does dr
s spurlock
s so there you have it a look at three of
s the interesting creatures we have set up
s in the backyard
s but
s this is just the tip of the iceberg
s as i say because i invented that phrase
s we have plenty of more insects creatures
s and even spiders to learn about in this
s series
s so look forward to the next volume
s and as always
s be kind and rewind for the next viewer
s bye
