The Japanese aim was to cripple the US Pacific fleet and win a quick war, to assert their Imperial dominance over the Pacific.
Whilst much damage was done and many servicemen would lose their lives, the US Pacific fleet would only suffer 3 ships lost out of the 21 attacked

80 years ago today was 'A date that will live in infamy'
At 7.48am Hawaiian time, Japan will commence the first strike on Pearl Harbour in a surprise attack.
Similar attacks will take place in the Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
