hey thanks for the response. sound like the card-size artwork files (at least on desktop) are unusable for something like this?

They're small enough that they look a bit crunchy when blown up to fullscreen, yes.

They'd have the high res scans internally, but they don't want to go downloading those files locally to the client or else MtGA would add a 3GB update every new set.

This. Those loadscreens are significantly higher-res than our card art, and the HD/download time impact of increasing all of the card art to that resolution would be very high.

So with "abilities" I shouldn't need to pick the target?

Because I still need to click on my opponent with [[Duskwielder]] Boast Ability

You're correct, I was mistaken. Activations also generally have a confirmation click for basically the same reasons: to protect against activating an ability by accident or when thought you were doing something else - even when there's no target to choose (like on Mnemonic Sphere).

Seismic Wave for the 1 dmg ping to all nonartifacts by target opponent

Okay, this one actually sucks since you already have to target the creature. Good feedback.

[[Rage forger]] is the worst offender by far. EDIT: never mind that says target player. Can we get an alchemy errata for it?

I disagree... Blood Artist is the worst offender by far, and for the same reason! I think a digital-only QOL change on these could totally happen at some point.

No Way Out is the card that prompted this post. Makes me target every time

Thanks for the follow-up. I should have been able to get that from context, but it was late. -_- Anyway, this is intended behavior , and I posted a little explanation of why a bit further up.

Some quick testing against Sparky shows the following: Spells that target an opponent (most prominently, discard spells) do not automatically target, while abilities (both triggered and activated) do.

Lol, that will teach me to post late at night without carefully reading the post. I was thinking about abilities and didn't quite click to the context of a discard spell...

All card plays from hand require moving the card to a new location to register the game action, and having a particular set of spells that didn't would be inconsistent and jarring. (Even if you think it wouldn't be, I promise it would.) Not to mention, a one-input spell would lead to a LOT of accidental casting. We'd see complaints about the game "casting spells for me" every dang day.

Now, one does wonder if spells that target an opponent could be made to accept the entire playmat as a valid target, so you don't have to be as precise. That's one that could be worth it...

It certainly should be automatically choosing a target opponent. What card are you using that isn't?

Edit: I misread the post (it was late, oops) - this is intended behavior for good reason. Read more below if you like!
