s | stand room has been live on PTR for |
---|---|
s | about a week at this point uh Chad |
s | what's the feedback been like from |
s | players uh uh you know there there's |
s | great stuff and uh and stuff that we |
s | need to improve on as well so uh so |
s | definitely like congratulations to |
s | everybody who got in there and and |
s | defeated the sand worm |
s | [Music] |
s | [Applause] |
s | show where we talk all things new world |
s | I'm your host for the day Patrick and |
s | I'm joined by senior narrative designer |
s | James and Lead AI designer Chad we're |
s | here today to talk about the sand worm |
s | the sand worm is our first 20 player |
s | encounter that takes place in the |
s | brimstone Sands we're going to challenge |
s | players to hop into this Arena and take |
s | down a massive a sprawling sand worm so |
s | before we dig into the fight itself |
s | James talk to me a little bit about the |
s | story of the sand worm super exciting |
s | right |
s | um yeah so the sand worms have been |
s | around for Millennia since the |
s | Babylonians and Sumerians arrived on a |
s | tournament and they're super powerful |
s | the Ancients Legend has it once tried to |
s | control and tame these creatures for |
s | their own purposes and they failed to do |
s | so so that kind of tells you like how |
s | powerful they actually are and it's not |
s | just their their power and their acid |
s | abilities and so forth it's it's the |
s | fact that they're very intelligent as |
s | well in fact a tribe of Dune Walkers |
s | learned how to communicate with them at |
s | one point in time and that's how they |
s | kind of became a sort of Ally of human |
s | entity in the fight against the |
s | corruption a long time ago and I say |
s | sort of because they're really the Ally |
s | of this tribe that really cherished them |
s | and nurtured their existence |
s | um and uh over time they disappeared |
s | after the Ancients vanished from eternum |
s | and |
s | um there was just one that sort of |
s | reworked recently but it was not |
s | reawakened in the way that it was meant |
s | to be there were some people on eternum |
s | that were meddling with some very |
s | ancient powers that awoke it and so now |
s | it's kind of like a crazed beast |
s | and a group of uh people have created an |
s | arena meant to try to sort of once again |
s | try to do the ancient thing and control |
s | and uh sort of trap the creature and be |
s | able to command it but you know so |
s | they've Unearthed ancient lore that |
s | lures the creature into this Arena but |
s | they can't communicate with it so they |
s | can't control it so they gave up on that |
s | but that presents a unique opportunity |
s | for the player who meets a playwright uh |
s | or sorry a poet named Phaedra and she's |
s | writing sort of like that she wants it |
s | to be the next Odyssey |
s | and has her sort of singled you out as |
s | like a very famous Hero on eternum and |
s | wants to write about your exploits and |
s | and has found out about this Arena and |
s | wants you to go in and take on the worm |
s | so that's how the trial starts that's |
s | very cool it goes from an ally to now an |
s | enemy yeah exactly so we used to go worm |
s | hunting uh chat this is the first time |
s | we're doing a 20 uh player boss like |
s | this can you talk to me a little bit |
s | about what players can expect when they |
s | fight the same worm yeah so like you |
s | said this is a 20-person RAID uh trial |
s | so this is the biggest uh or at least |
s | the most uh participants in a an |
s | instance piece of content that we've |
s | ever done so uh so lots of new stuff for |
s | us here |
s | um but uh but yeah for this we're we're |
s | definitely pushing into kind of |
s | traditional raiding territory so uh |
s | we're we're definitely encouraging a |
s | strong association with roles so you |
s | know I got your tanks your off tanks uh |
s | your healers your range DPS your melee |
s | DPS |
s | a variety of responsibilities so |
s | throughout the fight uh players will |
s | need to interact with uh aspects of the |
s | environment these pressure plates in |
s | particular to empower their team to be |
s | able to break through Shields and |
s | progress the fight and make the |
s | character the uh the boss vulnerable uh |
s | additionally there's uh enemies who uh |
s | drop empowering Buffs uh which allow the |
s | uh the player to uh to additionally Rend |
s | and weaken the boss |
s | as well as a variety of different |
s | attacks and uh and abilities that the |
s | player needs to watch out for |
s | um so uh so a lot of interesting aspects |
s | a lot of of challenging communication |
s | that we're we're asking the players to |
s | do and a lot of tight coordination so a |
s | lot of fun stuff I love that I love the |
s | uh the Reliance on communication with |
s | this fight I think it really elevates |
s | the gameplay and forces players to |
s | really rely on one another in order to |
s | succeed it's very cool to see us do that |
s | absolutely uh part of that need to rely |
s | on one another involves showing up |
s | prepared for the fight so James this is |
s | our first Beast type enemy so we have |
s | given Beast War to use finally uh what |
s | else do players need to do to be |
s | prepared for this fight yeah you know |
s | what I I'm gonna in addition to the |
s | strong raid composition I'm gonna go |
s | with the ABCs I'm gonna go with acid |
s | tincture of course |
s | um because of the the uh expected asset |
s | tax that you might encounter there um |
s | beastworld as you mentioned and chitin |
s | padding awesome yeah so yeah that should |
s | let you fight the sand worm take less |
s | damage from him and then also survive a |
s | lot of the attacks like you said a great |
s | way for you to repair and you know go in |
s | a little with a little Edge on your side |
s | as opposed to just getting whomped by |
s | the standard So speaking of getting |
s | warmth by the sand worm uh sand worm has |
s | been live on PTR for about a week at |
s | this point uh Chad what's the feedback |
s | been like from players uh you know there |
s | there is great stuff and uh and stuff |
s | that we need to improve on as well so uh |
s | so definitely like congratulations to |
s | everybody who got in there and and |
s | defeated the sand worm uh we were all |
s | watching uh as you guys were streaming |
s | and and doing those initial attempts uh |
s | and cheering along with you when you |
s | defeated him uh so uh so that was super |
s | exciting it was really awesome uh |
s | especially like big call out to the uh |
s | the actual shot callers The Raid leaders |
s | uh you guys are doing awesome it was |
s | super cool to watch everybody coordinate |
s | like that uh and everybody cheering when |
s | they took him down |
s | um so uh so some stuff that went uh uh |
s | right with the uh with the the PTR I |
s | mean definitely uh the coordination that |
s | we were seeing uh the shock collars the |
s | people filling roles uh the people |
s | taking over roles when one of their |
s | their compatriots Falls uh like those |
s | were all the aspects that we wanted to |
s | see that we really wanted the fight to |
s | uh to deliver on with the player |
s | uh the parts that that we have |
s | definitely identified through the PTR |
s | that we want to improve |
s | um certainly uh the the difficulty uh |
s | the challenging nature so uh so we're |
s | definitely uh adjusting that uh for sure |
s | um uh but even beyond that there are |
s | certain aspects of the the behavior |
s | um that uh that we want to to adjust to |
s | kind of take into account some uh some |
s | of the the really good strategies that |
s | we were seeing and not to say that we we |
s | want to prevent players from doing these |
s | strategies we just want to make them uh |
s | maybe not as safe as they might have |
s | been on the PTR so uh so as you see the |
s | the boss transitioned into live you're |
s | going to be seeing uh the sand worm do |
s | some attacks and some abilities that are |
s | going to make some of those kind of safe |
s | strategies a little bit more dangerous |
s | and a little bit more risky uh require |
s | the player to adjust regroup and then uh |
s | and then charge back at the boss it's |
s | really exciting uh yeah seeing the |
s | strategies that players evolved with on |
s | the PTR were a lot different than what |
s | we have been testing internally with so |
s | it was cool to see players Theory craft |
s | here and figure out how to optimize |
s | their DPS and get those kills faster and |
s | faster and I'm really excited to see how |
s | they react to these tuning changes and |
s | then carry that forward into a live |
s | environment yeah absolutely and and to |
s | be said I mean our you know our players |
s | who showed up on PTR are excellent |
s | they're they're doing a fantastic job |
s | um uh definitely some of the stuff they |
s | were doing we were doing internally as |
s | well but uh but also their their |
s | execution was was great |
s | um which is fantastic is more data for |
s | us lets us make those adjustments and |
s | then uh and then yeah we're going to be |
s | uh rolling those changes out and then |
s | and showing it up on live all right |
s | excited for those tuning changes to come |
s | in any lessons we've learned from this |
s | PTR experience with a saneworm that we |
s | might carry forward with us uh they're I |
s | mean there's a huge amount that we've |
s | been learning through this whole thing |
s | so uh obviously this is our first 20 |
s | person rage and so uh so it'd be |
s | shocking if there weren't things that we |
s | were learning uh and we definitely are |
s | so uh definitely with the the numerical |
s | tunings even Beyond just kind of Base |
s | kind of health and damage values I mean |
s | we do want to lean into uh requirements |
s | for players to to you know roll debuffs |
s | roll uh wrens and weekends and make sure |
s | that all of that's kind of taken into |
s | account uh from day one |
s | um so uh so those kind of aspects are |
s | definitely things we're learning from |
s | but even beyond that just kind of |
s | learning uh how the the flow of combat |
s | is different in a 20-person raid than it |
s | is in a five person or even a ten person |
s | that extra Manpower the ability to bring |
s | more weapons more varieties more |
s | abilities uh really changes kind of how |
s | we need to approach some of this stuff |
s | so uh so it's all like really great |
s | learnings |
s | um and it is definitely going to be |
s | helping us in the future uh and it's |
s | it's super exciting stuff for me yeah |
s | very exciting uh thank you both this |
s | brings us to our community question for |
s | the week uh what mechanics from the sand |
s | worm do you really enjoy and what would |
