7s asking the developer and designer of the
9s cabbage lowlands about the upcoming
10s project so tell us who you are and what
13s you do mod Kira I was the lead defent
16s project manager for the project I'm a
20s dead I'm a Content developer and I was
22s the lead designer on the project so
24s could you sell the campus lowlands to me
26s and everybody watching and as little as
28s possible elevate the pic style alright
30s we've got the cad boss lowlands which is
32s a new map expansion to the western side
34s of Zaire it's home to a full force of
38s new continents so much new content to be
40s honest there's two main focuses is
42s Slayer on the top of the mountain of
44s Mount Kurama and then you slam us there
46s for nice layer creatures and it Slayer
47s Foss we've got the farming guild to the
49s southwest of that a whole horse of new
51s crops on existing factors like potato
53s cacti and snake grass few new patches as
56s well including grewal redwood trees
57s there's two new quests which link in
60s there to the rest of to the caboose
62s lowlands and we got a new fishing and
64s Thunder training method as well the name
66s just a bit plastic crowing horrible Demi
69s boss new chief of diary yeah
72s loss there's so much I don't even
74s mention that stuff yeah yeah alright so
77s that's a lot of stuff when we pulled the
79s cable slogans we asked the players to
81s vote 144 questions that's 44 questions
84s shaping what content how much content
85s how it's gonna be
87s were you surprised when all 44 of those
90s questions passed the poll players wanted
92s in game was there any panic no-one's
94s ever voted on that most content before
95s we want to release it in January that's
97s only three months away what was react
99s what's teens reaction to everything
101s passing they were joyous all the way it
103s was a he was a first time when it comes
106s to a big update that every single
108s questions past but if that said like we
111s have been doing better each time like
112s Dragon Slayer two got pretty close so
114s did theater of blood so we were hoping
117s that most would pass but I don't we were
119s quite expecting all of them oh yeah it's

146s were actually going to pour an offer so

155s that afterwards but if we plug it
156s offsets them if we were to pull
158s everything we came up with we had almost
160s certainly had a load of failed ideas

164s had we're just throwing different ideas
166s about and they were all sort of filtered

170s good idea and then would the community
173s also think it's a good idea sort of
174s thing but yeah it's working and I hope
177s you make sure that that carries on with
179s the lecture budget we work on as well so
182s in January 2016 we release there at the
184s time and release had its fair share of
186s criticism how would you compare Zayin

190s that we're we have improved things a
193s little bit but maybe we're just biased

238s concerns like we're taking a step back

241s there in a couple of places but nowhere
243s near as prevalent because we know
244s players weren't a fan of it and
246s basically just a lot more content as
248s well like as Keira much doing there's so
251s many things coming with the chaos
252s lowlands but were there when there's a
255s first launch just really hell
256s make it feel like a full update
259s basically not just the first batch of
262s one as I the highlight like the mapping
264s was one of the biggest problems that we
266s have look to address we know it's too
268s spread out and it's it's too spacious
270s for what content it actually offers I
272s think one of the biggest differences
274s you'll see with the cab off lower lines
275s is like we firstly we've spent three
277s months on cameras lower ones compared
279s them more like less than two months that
280s we spent on the original Korean launch
282s and chemical ones that look small
285s compared on the map but the amount of
286s content in that small area is so much
288s more so with a couple slowdowns with
291s releasing terrible fishing which allows
292s you to gain XP in two skills just
295s fishing a hunter at the same time this
297s kind of follows what released on fossil
298s Island which was the swimming activity
300s which larger to get the chilla T and
302s feeling at speed is it a coincidence
303s nope we're seeing more activities that
305s offer lower XP rates of plotting on the
307s skills or is it part of a concentrated
310s effort to not upset the best XP race but
314s instead offer lower more skills I don't
317s think it's the most I offers there's a
318s different niche to a pro it's like oh
320s who do like just share different skills
322s at the same time but it's not a
324s concerted effort for us to stop moving
326s in that direction I think with this one
328s it just felt natural given that
330s essentially the original concept was
332s falconry for fishing in essence and
335s we've took that concept and made it make
337s something as advanced on from that and
339s trying to make it fit by fishing and be
341s a lot more enjoyable than falconry is up
344s to play but yeah giving you using a bird
347s to hunt fish if I'm naturally give some
349s hundred XP obviously was also a fishing
351s it to every week so it was just some
353s natural things so the cable slowly
355s learns brings a bit more accessible
356s content the larger updates and years
358s before so I think Dragon's Lair quite
360s exclusive requirements Inferno be very
363s good theater of blood
364s equally had to be very good so
365s accessible content we've got lower tiers
368s of farming guilds of people lower skills
370s can enter dragon equipment which just
373s has 60 attack appointment attached to it
375s is this accessibility again a
377s concentrated effort is it coincidence
379s have we learned from exclusive content I
382s think it's important that the content
385s has the appropriate requirements for
387s that piece of content I don't think any
389s work
390s on the argument saying we should make
391s the inferno accessible it's literally
393s designed to be this endgame challenge
395s that's the sequel to the fight games
397s right it has to be that and you can see
399s the fate of a blood trail it's a
400s high-level raids and the endgame
402s experience it warrants being that
404s challenging piece of content they come
406s off lowlands it's a land mass it's gonna
409s be accessible to everyone
410s anyone can walk there so there should be
412s content that you know suits being that
414s there's not there's nothing stopping us
416s putting it a new raiding dungeon on
418s cables we really wanted to we've got
420s James about there already but it's
422s important that offers that variety and
424s fit since it's part of the game now as
427s you mentioned like Slayer blood and info
430s of the high level PC content we did
431s Dragon Slayer in the past of course
434s another element is without big updates
436s we do want to appeal like there's such
439s marketable pieces of pieces of content
441s that you want them to be able to appeal
443s for new players and certainly bringing
445s back old players who use the flavors get
447s back in the day if you're telling them
449s to come and play theater or blood that's
450s that's quite a hard you know you're
453s gonna have to play for a long time
454s before you really get to that level so
456s there is definitely benefits to doing
458s some more accessible stuff as well and
459s it's about I think it's about getting
460s the balance right
461s we sue all players with the recent
463s release of mobile we've got a lot of new
465s players in the game again and it made
466s sense that the first big update
468s afterwards had a bit more of a focus on
470s that group of players and maybe the last
472s few updates have but there's definitely
473s still Lions high-end stuff in there as
475s Oh like some of the highest level Slayer
477s monster you can find the hydras so like
480s here and said we're trying to go for a
481s big range which makes sense for cameras
483s because unlike Infernus that's just a
485s self send a mini game it's a big wide
487s area of lots of things to do so it makes
489s sense to have a wider appeal as well
491s with it I think you know that I mean
493s realistically a new player could have a
496s few weeks of effort in game and be able
498s to access like the lower levels of
500s aerial fishing the lower level tier of
502s farming so much stuff it's ridiculous
504s like I know even three months and you
506s mentioned earlier like how much we've
508s managed to get done at that time
509s it is honestly crazy looking back now
511s and the amount of different stuff there
512s I'm just hoping it's like this genuinely
514s I hope there's something fair for
515s everyone I mean you might met me saying
518s we located a PvP that well but there's
519s news of war there's gonna be new stuff
520s you can actually go and take into the
522s world and there
522s I use it when he was here having
525s suggestions for the world wars he wanted
527s the ring particular to appeal to be ups
528s and yes tough
530s we got dragging them Derek and I night
533s as well which I know are quite powerful
536s yeah so it's not just new bosses and new
539s creatures lots of new rewards as well a

548s more of a niche purpose is this part of
551s a conscious effort to introduce Tanishq
552s items rather than best in slot again is
555s it coincidence that we're doing that and
557s has there been any learnings from
558s previous niche equipment like the prime
560s on scepter and just ashes armors which
562s has a fair bit of questions would be a
564s bit useless
565s I think offering niche stuff does allow
569s us to add a lot of new content of the
571s game new reward items without really
573s pushing the high level we know players
575s really do care about not power tipping
578s the game too much I think over the years
580s we've got it about right there's been
582s certain things that have to be powerful
584s of course we all know that and there's
585s certain things that are useless as you
587s as you mentioned as well and that is
589s definitely one of the biggest problems
590s when it comes to adding initiative we
591s need to make sure it does you know as it
593s says has a niche I mean as much as the
596s justice your armor has an effect it's
598s not mean it's not useful enough or I'm
600s again but of course we learn there and
603s when we're coming up with different
604s things about the dragon and Islands
606s we're trying to make sure yes there are
608s places in being where we expect people
609s were going useless so be to new quests
613s that are being introduced we've
614s established that they're novice level
615s they're accessible how do you see the
617s story unfolding from there onwards how
619s many more quests
620s what kind of story lines you want to
621s take it on so these two quests are the
624s last two house quests so with our launch
627s on a quest for each of a five houses on
629s her end which means that we now have a
632s really nice set of foundations basically
634s to build a proper storyline on so
636s hopefully it all goes well moving
640s forward from this we can look to see
642s quests ramping up in difficulty and more
644s story coming in and whatnot
646s across of kren and chaos
650s and spoilers is the way you'd like to
652s take the storyline at the end no
655s spoilers but the five house quests
658s although they're not living but not
661s obviously I in Toledo meet your they all
663s have their own little hints as to what's
665s to come they will all combined into one
667s bigger storyline so there's plenty of
668s hints there for anyone who is interested
670s who might be able to work out what's
672s coming next it goes
676s I've heard some that John scene used to
679s be quite heavily involved in the quest
680s waiting for say if I remember rightly
682s and have you kind of assumed that
683s Mansell now that he's a mobile pretty
686s much yeah like like the one of the house
691s was for she's in one tale of a righteous
693s fell was developed by myself and care
696s and based on an idea from John he wrote
698s a lot of the initial law for Zarek and
701s chambers is Eric and I've sort of taken
705s about taking what he wrote and worked
706s with mod West to add a bit more to it to
708s create a rough plan for where we want to
711s go in the future
712s so we touched on the alchemical Hydra
715s slightly earlier that's the new Slayer
716s boss crying 95 slated kill any play
719s wanna know what do you keep in mind when
721s designing the boss design inks mechanics
723s are just so many bosses now it's it gets
726s harder and harder sometimes I think well
729s how can I make this boss different but I
731s think the most important thing is that
733s the boss aligns up for where it needs to
734s fit it's got a suit it's level
737s requirements and how it's gonna be
738s played so this is a Slayer boss which
741s means you're going to need to go and
743s kill a lot of them right you're gonna
745s need if you get boss tasks it's not so
747s many way if you get a like an actual
748s time task you might be killing up to two
750s hundred of them so it it can't be like a
752s 15 minute 20 minutes salak of a boss
754s fight so it would be then comparable to
755s doing broadcast on a blue dragon target
757s envoy potentially it's got a lineup
758s morph like what Cerberus offers and
760s Kraken etc right and so it's not saying
764s out to be the most challenging bossfight
765s so the mechanics need to be quite
768s obvious so you see that boss doing
771s something you need to know pretty
773s instinctively this is how I'm going to
774s have to do off this mechanic and so over
776s maybe just fighting it a few times you
778s should expected oh I'll learn like
779s roughly how to avoid its mechanics and
781s honestly I
782s yet and then obviously over time you'll
784s get them you get better and better at
785s fighting it yeah but in terms of
789s mechanics like there's a few general
792s things I try to follow in that a boss
795s fight needs to have progression if it's
798s going to be quite a high level boss so
800s it's multiple phases for example so and
803s doing that you don't expect it to get
805s easier the boss tried to get harder and
807s I think you see in various other games
808s and perhaps in runescape and different
810s boss fights as well we're all supposed
813s to get the museum overtime because you
814s stopped taking out its heads or you
815s start thinking oh it's mechanics now
817s obviously another mega Hydra you've
819s already seen it loses its heads as you
821s fight it and so we had to be very
823s careful to make sure that actually it
825s still has progression in the right
827s direction and that you don't just as
829s long as you get through the first phase
830s then it's not so becoming easier and was
832s it feels completely wrong the other
834s thing is if you're asking the political
836s track of different things you can only
838s reasonably get them to keep track of a
839s little bit of the two or three things
842s otherwise it gets ridiculous you can't
844s really keep track of it but also the
847s player needs to feel rewarded if you do
849s something right you need to get a
851s benefit for doing so if the player gets
854s punished it needs to be because they've
855s screwed something up otherwise it feels
857s unfair I think that's that's really
860s important for all boss fights ok so a
862s good summary would be that it's engaging
865s enough to want you to kill it over 100
867s times on task yeah but difficult enough
869s to warrant it's 95 slay requirement as
872s though it's bouncing up with so many
873s different things yeah I can develop like
877s the outcome like a hider quite quickly
878s it's so much of the time actually just
880s goes into playing it prototyping it and
882s try this mechanic it doesn't quite work
884s let's change this face as well back and
887s forth
887s I brought play testers and they tend to
889s be it's always incredibly invaluable and
892s the core thing is seeing new people who
895s have not been exposed to the boss at all
897s yeah get to play it and see how they
899s actually respond is it as I imagined
902s like you play this mechanic are they
904s going to know what to do it's so hard
906s for me to judge that because I've
907s written the mechanic I already know how
909s did you judge it how did you judge it
911s was it was their reaction what you
912s expected
913s I think we got it about right no there's
916s a few tweaks we had to make and we've
917s made since but nothing massively
920s substantial so most of them all seem to
922s love the fight and I think we've got it
924s about right yeah when we spoke earlier
926s about polling the cameras Leyland's we
927s talked about how much work we did with
929s the community before the poll went live
931s and even after the poll but how much of
933s the content itself was shaped by the
934s community what ideas they have that
936s we've implemented was a huge amount for
939s this one that's been shaped by the
940s community like I think a really big one
942s is the the farming guild so we were
945s putting together the design for the
947s farming girl back in like late 2017 and
951s it just so happened but just as we were
953s like halfway through the design press
955s that there was a huge suggestion
956s appeared for a farming guild so we took
960s a lot of ideas from about when finishing
962s off that design and so a huge amount of
965s farming guild has been like driven by
967s player feedback and playa suggestions
969s but obviously that was the player
971s suggestions three days prior so I was
973s pitching in a room class yeah I mean the
975s similarities are ridiculous it's a bit
977s of validation ready to pitch it Rufus
980s and suddenly this design appeared had a
983s huge amount of support or like oh okay
986s it was good it was good to see that we
989s were very much in line of all community
991s wanted but the same time so like now I'm
993s gonna try include some of that stuff
994s into our design as well not just the
997s farming guild though there was other
998s things as well that on chaos that purity
1001s hadn't put into like we Slayer master
1004s with area cific tasks that's an idea
1006s even bouncing on the community for ages
1008s and we found his side to use it for care
1009s boss so we're not spoke about yet so the
1011s slow master will assign you to kill
1013s monsters as a neo slaying master dies
1014s but in specific areas yeah rather than
1017s general throwing
1018s this wherever you want yeah the idea is
1020s that it hopefully it brings a bit of
1022s life back to areas of Britain abandons
1026s now there's some same on stirs and now
1029s there's a reason to actually go kill
1030s them there again so thank you for
