7s exploration into sailing Tech
9s as you hopefully know by now the old
12s school team is working on a brand new
15s skill and shaping it with the community
17s during refinement
20s sailing was taken forward as the first
23s skill we'd like to refine further so our
26s first step will be nailing down the
28s navigational mechanics of sailing
31s before we get started Please be aware
33s that this demo is purely a technical
35s showcase there are no gameplay mechanics
38s here and the art is far from final but

43s about the tech and challenge some of the
45s misconceptions players might have around
47s what is technically possible for us to
49s do so let's jump into it
52s boats are a familiar Concept in old
55s school they're all over the place once
58s you start looking from Tiny row boats to
61s freminic longboats to huge Merchant
64s vessels that travel continents
67s you've seen them you've boarded them
69s you've smuggled rum on them so
72s captaining them shouldn't feel out of
74s place as a skill you could master
77s sailing in Old School needs to feel well
80s integrated intuitive and familiar and
84s that's where our technical exploration

87s we already have boats we just need to
90s make them move
92s here you can see a small boat with a
94s body and a sail and a player stood

97s that player is able to do regular
99s interactions while on the boat and see
101s other players doing activities on the
103s dock this player is also in control of
106s the boat and can use point-and-click
107s movement to Traverse the waters please
110s note this movement and control scheme
112s are not final but we're using it here to
114s demonstrate how a player can be part of
116s a moving entity
119s that boat's a little cramped though
121s let's give our guy a bigger vessel
124s this one's got quite a bit more room
127s maybe to carry a treasure chest or some
130s fishing supplies or enough space to
133s bring your pants
135s maybe this boat is a bit more durable or
138s can carry more cargo
141s the specifics of what utilities boats
143s will have is not decided yet but they
147s can contain interactable objects like
149s anywhere else in the game
151s we also think sailing could make for a
154s fun group activity we want to let you
156s invite your friends aboard so you can
158s sail the high seas together
160s on even larger ships you might need a
162s whole crew working together to man the
164s Cannons Hoist the sails keep look out
166s and stay safely through the waves we're
169s able to have groups of players aboard
171s boats which could open up lots of
173s gameplay opportunities for multiplayer
