Hi there everyone,

We have a number of active Client issues that we're working on, and alongside our Game Update today, we wanted to provide you a detailed update on where we are on these issues.

Client Crashes / Black Screen

We are aware of a handful of issues impacting client stability and we're working hard to address them as soon as possible.

For those of you experiencing the black screen / loading screen issues, today's Game Update includes a potential fix - please do let us know if this has been resolved for you now.

Secondly, over the coming week, the team are continuing to work on releasing further hotfixes to address client stability as they are ready. If you've been impacted by these crashes, thank you for your patience - we'll provide more information as soon as we can.

Lobby / Login UI Changes

Last Monday, we deployed a client update for Mobile introducing a raft of UI improvements and test features focused on new users. When we deployed this update, something unintentional also happened –  some of these changes came to Desktop.

What caused this to happen?

This is our first major client deployment for Mobile and, simply put, some new issues cropped up that slipped through the cracks. When the Mobile build rolled out, the unexpected happened and elements of the Login / Lobby changed.

What issues has this caused?

The net result of this build deployment issue is that much of the login and lobby interface you are using today isn’t the one intended for the Desktop Client.

Because of this, there’s a number of critical issues that exist that we need to resolve asap. These include increased CPU load in the lobby, Steam login issues and various pieces of UI that feature cut off or missing elements.

How do we plan to fix this?

The most critical reported functionality issues are addressed in today's Game Update.

This is a short term solution for the work that’s also taking place to uncouple the UI changes from the existing Desktop Client UI. We’re aiming to revert the current Desktop Client login and lobby UI back to how it was prior to this update as soon as we can – potentially as soon as March 8th. (Please note: The release date of the reversion is subject to development and testing).

Taking The Discussion Further

On top of getting things back to normal, we also want to do more to give you all more insight into our Mobile project. We want to explain what this Mobile Update was about, where it’s leading and our overall goals/updates in more detail - and make this a continued conversation.

We're working on getting an extra stream together to dive into Mobile in more detail later this month, and we'll have a confirmed date to share soon.

We know that's not everything you're looking to hear about today - rest assured, we're working on a meaningful response to some of the other big topics in the community right now and we'll have more to say soon. Thanks for bearing with us as we pull everything together.

Thanks for the info - we've flagged this to the team immediately.

EDIT: Question from the team - what GPU did you experience this on?

So to be clear is it safe to leave the lobby open yet or will it still cause our computers to melt?

It should be, yes.

Curious as to why this wasnt mentioned on the patch notes, seems like its a pretty big deal and people would want to know about it? Keeping people in the dark for hidden patches like this is why we are saying theres a lack of communication.

Agreed - it wasn't intentional and I'm not sure why it was missed on the Patch Notes. We're looking into it.

My game is unplayable now because I tried to change a couple settings. Click to change scale settings and shadows turn on or off, tried to map it out but didn't work as some settings aren't binary.

Very sorry to hear this has happened - we're working on getting a cold fix out to resolve it as soon as we possibly can. As soon as we have a release time, we'll post back.

Ahh perfect thank you. While i get not every change would need to be on the patch notes (backend stuff we wont see etc). It would be nice to see a list of every change made (even if its follow "this" link for every change). We might not understand them all, but i think it would def help restore a little trust.

It's in there now. Thanks for calling it out, it should have been in there.

Hopefully in the near future? Whatever response you guys are formulating over there can you please ensure it includes the reason why it has taken so long for you to respond?

We will for sure. I know it's frustrating to be given vague-ness, and we definitely want to get into it - but there's a lot to figure out to make sure we come out and say something meaningful on it.

Can you clarify which issues this specifically refers to? Preferably a list of bullet points of critical issues that have been adressed with todays Game Update. That way this post becomes way more informative, while also allowing people to check if the fixes worked for their system.

They are in the Patch Notes - this was referring to the UI functionality issues (like the Steam login stuff). We'll look to link them more in future.

I like how they fixed all the yak track bugs already but everything else will be quietly left till later in the week.

It's purely based on complexity rather than priorities. The Yak Track bugs have been a lot more straight forward to reproduce and resolve.

The f**k is wrong with you people? You words basically amount to are saying 'we don't know what we're doing so go ahead keep abusing it'.

Also I love how when yak track was mentioned you said 'flagged this to the team immediately' but regarding a huge, long-term, damaging, abused bug, you said 'hopefully in the near future*.

You guys seem so incompetent.

And if you don't punish the people it just means that those who got legitimate KC or chose not to abuse to bug are just a bunch of suckers right? Next time we see a bug like that we should just abuse it from day 1, because that's what your message is yeah?

So damn incompetent, Jagex.

It's about complexity. Nothing about the ED issue is straight forward - this is a hugely complex issue to solve that takes some significant work, and any short term solutions in the past failed to prevent it as new workarounds were discovered.

Before we come out to talk about it in detail, we are assessing all the factors so we can talk about options, timelines, the whole lot.

It's a conversation we will absolutely have, and the hope part is that we are optimistic we'll have all that information sooner rather than later so we can start that discussion in some way.

PSA: We're deploying an update at ~10:30am Game Time today (Tuesday) to address the Yak Track crash on open and the graphical settings bug.

Further hotfixes for other client crashes are in flight and we'll have more to share on those very soon.

Here is a link to a few people having the same issues as i am experiencing. Since the update last Monday it seems as though a lot of people are having performance issues. Myself in particular has noticed massive Stuttering and all around Jittery gameplay where as a week ago the game was running buttery smooth. the only thing i have noticed is that in the "Displayfps" in the console there is a new RenderFPS section that was not there before.

Just walking around the world causes stuttering and surging or Bladed diving amplifies this effect 10 Fold.

The only thing that i have found to help fix this is to Ramp up the Renderscale to 200% however this brings my GPU Utilisation from 40-50% all the way to 99% meaning i can almost do nothing else on the PC like watching videos or sharing my screen, let alone attempt to stream.

Could you please let us know if you are aware of this issue and weather there will be a hotfix coming for this as im sure alot of people are eager to get back into playing the game without these issues.

My Current PC specs are: RTX 3080, i79700KF, 32GB 3200MHz RAM.

Thank you for this - I've passed this report and the other threads to the team.

Adding this from outside the edit I made in the main post.

UPDATE: March 2, 6pm Game Time

We have another hotfix on the way focused on resolving the most common crash for the RuneScape Client.

We are targeting rolling this out tomorrow (Wednesday) morning as soon as possible. We'll let you know as soon as we have a confirmed release time to share.

Hey everyone. Just a heads up that we've deployed a new warmfix this morning (Wednesday) to address one of the more commonly occurring crashes in the desktop client. More updates are on the way over the coming days.

Client Freezes are still occurring at an alarming rate.

It seems to have to do with NPCs dying

If you activate an ability the moment an NPC is supposed to die, I have a high chance of having a client freeze necessitating Task Manager closure

Any comment on that? Is that something you are aware of?

I'll check in with the team on this one now.

u/JagexHooli Quick update, today when I logged in it was worse. Now at 100% render scale it was pushing my RTX 3080 to 99% GPU when standing In a remote location with no other players around. Pushing the render scale high made the game feel much worse and drove my fps from 150 down to 45 maxing out my GPU at 100%. it's almost like the processing needed for Runescape has doubled overnight with this update.

Thanks for this report. We'll pass it to the team to investigate.
