s hey guys we've got a ton of stuff coming
s in this next beta season 2 update coming
s on june 2nd
s and to talk about the update happening
s with map creator i've got the man
s himself steve the dev behind map creator
s can i call you the map creator creator
s is that is that a fair title
s yeah that works yeah all right cool well
s let's just get right into it um first
s tell us everything that's planned for
s the beta season 2 map creator feature
s what what's what's going to be added to
s the game tell us some of the new
s features one of the major things we have
s planned is a first version of a file
s sharing system you'll be able to back up
s your existing maps to our back end after
s which you'll get back a 12-digit sharing
s code that you can pass around to us to
s your friends post on your twitter and
s then with that sharing code people can
s enter it in the game and it'll download
s the map corresponding to the sharing
s code yeah it'll allow us to do things
s like maybe eventually put it in a
s featured playlist stuff like that
s another big thing we did is magnets so
s there's a first version of magnets in
s beta season two magnets is basically a
s system by which if you
s hold an object and get close to another
s object it'll kind of align the rotation
s and position to snap to an object so
s let's say i have a block here then it
s could like come up here and then just
s like snap to the other object so you
s don't always have to rely on your snap
s settings and instead you can just turn
s on magnets to really make your workflow
s a lot easier especially when things are
s off grid for example and you're trying
s to align them another feature is we're
s now allowing you to overlap all game
s mode objects and then there's a bunch of
s small quality of life things hiding kill
s zones and thumbnails like stuff like
s that a bunch of small things and then uh
s i guess yeah i didn't talk about our new
s map yet which we have a brand new map
s wet ocean so yeah i'm glad you brought
s that up because what ocean we already
s have a canvas map in flat earth
s why are we adding a new one what's
s what's its purpose
s i guess i'm just really excited to see
s map screenshots that aren't orange but
s no jokes aside we love uh flat earth but
s this is a great successor both
s aesthetics wise and gameplay wise it's
s basically a little island and a big
s ocean surrounded by mountains in the
s distance with trees on them and that
s should be really exciting it will create
s a completely different aesthetic and
s look for some of the maps even if you
s build the same ones that you built on
s flat earth on this map should look
s different which will be cool gameplay
s wise what's cool is because it's in
s water it kind of gives you this natural
s kill zone at the water level so what we
s decided to do is place an interactable
s like kill zone at the water level so
s that there's like a natural like if you
s fall into that the player dies but you
s can also choose to remove it if you do
s want to build underwater we've also
s decided to make it twice as big as flat
s earth which should open up the
s possibility to create massive maps and
s i'm really excited to see what people
s end up doing with that well i'm going to
s build some underwater bases i think you
s can go underwater right yeah you can
s yeah yeah i'm not sure if it's deep
s enough to build a base but you can
s definitely build some stuff down there
s yeah it wouldn't be a map creator update
s if we didn't add objects new objects to
s play around with what uh what kind of
s objects have we added a lot of like
s foliage and greenery so we added trees
s grass ferns flowers a couple of variants
s of each of these things and then we also
s there was a big demand for kind of these
s larger environmental pieces so our team
s did some really cool work with houdini
s creating these like big uh cliffs that
s should be really nice to place on your
s maps and then we also made some crates
s my personal favorite is a scalable cube
s object which this scalable cube is
s specifically made so it'll be really
s good for filling up like tiny spaces or
s really large spaces just kind of to fill
s in anything where you feel like you
s didn't have a block to place before yeah
s so here's a fun little question i know
s you go out in the community and see what
s people are saying about about the game
s has there ever been a suggestion
s that you didn't really consider that
s idea before and then because you've seen
s that suggestion it actually made it into
s the game for map creator yeah definitely
s this is actually a really big one that i
s don't know why i didn't think about it
s like the way i built season one map
s creator was i required every map to have
s all of the gamemode objects and someone
s immediately right off the bat people
s suggested like why can't i delete these
s things and i guess i just didn't really
s think about that because i figured like
s you would probably want most maps to be
s playable for all modes and if you
s wouldn't you would just place the ones
s you didn't want in like a corner and
s just kind of ignore them what i ended up
s doing is i
s only require two initial spawns to be
s there for both teams and you can just
s choose whichever gamemode object you
s want to support certain game modes and
s then the game modes will be grayed out
s in the custom games lobby if you don't
s have the required object so final
s question you know what's what's it been
s like being the main dev behind map
s creator i'm really happy like with the
s state that it's in and where we're going
s with it i personally get to touch a lot
s of different systems which is a lot of
s fun it's never boring it's very varied
s to step back a little bit i think what
s it's like right now it's kind of like
s we're trying to build this very robust
s map creator system that we can just add
s content onto instead of like necessarily
s having to refactor a lot of the code so
s i'm constantly like going back and
s refactoring a little bit to make it more
s robust and then adding new content as
s well and we're really trying to just
s like build out this machine where when
s people ask us things like it'll be
s pretty easy to like actually implement
s them and most of the work will be
s content instead of like heavy lifting
s engineering and the file sharing is a
s really big step towards that i would say
s and then
s uh
s it's been super fun like seeing the
s crazy things people are making and i
s mean i love that it's like this tool
s that i made and everyone that we made
s and that everyone is just using and
s making these crazy maps it's awesome
s seeing the community yeah thanks for
s your time steve and for everyone out
s there remember
s beta season 2 comes out on june 2nd so
s on that will be on xbox playstation and
s of course steam pay attention on all our
s social media channels we'll be posting
s updates and teasers every single day
s leading up to the launch so you'll know
s exactly what's going to be in it before
s it even launches
