You need to fix your houses to get workers. You also can kill part of your army to get workers. There are different solutions.

How big is your army?

Maybe you can kill some of your units to recover workers.

You have a button to dismiss units easily as an option in the barracks when you are close to it with the unit.

yeah but my barracks had was infected and I couldn't dismiss them until I repaired it. But I couldn't repair it without the workers, hence I had to kill them all manually

Remember also you can disable some buildings to get their resourcers back but I undertand that maybe you was in a real dead-end street.

Anyway this situations are not normal. You only had back luck.
