What antivirus app do you use? Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.6/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

Yeah, you don't want to run without all the latest Windows updates, as they patch many security holes.

Good luck!

So far as I know MS do not provide any method of fixing DX 10, 11 or 12 as such. DX9 is different as it iis a separate installation, but later ones are more or less built into Windows.

You could try this repair tool:

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Zala85 said: CPU temps not seen on speedfan app,
It should be there, but might show as say "core 1" or some other such phrasing. But from the temps in Speccy I suspect it will be okay. For the GPU temps 70c is getting up there but not quite to the level of causing crashes - it never ever gets to 80c or over?

If you search that Speccy file for Not Installed you'll see a long list of Windows updates "In Progress" going back to February. While I'm not 100% sure that is related to this game problem it definitely needs fixing! You could use this MS utility for ... Read more

You have both, plus probably DX9. 12 is not a replacement fo 11, which is what this game uses.

I'm seeing a few of these recently across a few different games, I suspect some antivirus app has been updated and is not getting in the way. Which one do you use?

Add CK3.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.6/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

I'm already helping you with this in a ZenDesk ticket.

So settings.txt is updating but not pdx_settings.txt , is that right?

What if you manually edit the two files?

And what antivirus app do you use? Add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list. You should add steam.exe and C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2.2021.6/paradox launcher.exe to that list.

Please try this:

- exit the Steam app entirely
- uninstall Paradox Launcher v2 from the Windows "Apps and features" utility, if still present.

Delete the following folders if still present:

- C:/users//AppData/Local/Programs/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/
- C:/users//AppData/Roaming/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

- run steam.exe as the Windows Admin user

- run the game from the PLAY button in Steam

IF that doesn't help, in this folder are some .log files:
C:/users//AppData/Local/Paradox Interactive/launcher-v2/
Please attach them here.

DanRage47 said: Yeah, these guides aren't working... not for Stellaris or HOI4. Neither game seem to support Steam mods anymore.
They work fine for me and most other users. What ever problem you are having it is not a lack of support for mods in these games.

Is your issue that the mods show in the launcher but are not in effect in the game? If so the steps in post#2 above should help.

What launcher version do you see? Current is 2021.6

Are you using any external monitor? Or just the laptop's built in screen?

Did you do the Windows updates I mentioned?

That's a shame, the issue is not connected with your user profile then. I don't have a lot else to try!

In the nVidia control panel, manage 3D Settings, force ck3.exe onto the "integrated Intel" option there - does the game start then? If so the issue is in the nVidia software somewhere.

If that doesn't work, then In your Steam Library right-click on this game and choose Properties. Click on Set Launch Options, and paste this in there:
-opengl

If that helps then the issue is in DirectX 11 in Windows 10.

I see you have Stellaris too, does it run okay?

There are a couple of crashes in that dxdiag in ck3.exe with a Windows error code c0000374, the associated data looks like some sort of Windows issue to me.

If you run the Windows update app does it find anything to update? If so do that and reboot.

If that doesn't help, Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after a few minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN ... Read more

Steam Cloud saves write to the local disk, then sync up to their cloud when you exit the game. If the MS update reboots your machine in the middle of playing, that can't happen of course. You can see what is up there here:

I am sorry none of that helped. I do not know what is wrong in this Windows installation that is preventing our game from starting.

Wat if you make another user ID in Windows, log into Windows as that and try the game under there? Any different?

The nVidia devices is a GPU; your CPU is Intel.

I have seen this happen when there are separate outputs for the two video systems. Do you have your monitor plugged into the nVidia output or the system board output?

Probably not related to this problem but your Windows has had no major update applied since 2018. Run the Update app and look for a new Win10 version to apply, install it and reboot.

In the game launcher please set Display mode to Borderless. THEN go here:

I was going to suggest you lodge this as a bug report in that forum, as it now reads like a code problem (on your machine at least).

However I missed that you are in Win11, which is of course only in beta at present and so unsupported. You are still welcome to make that bug report though ! Can't hurt, might help.
