Banned cards are always in a draft pool. For any rebalanced cards you will draft and play with the original (unrebalanced) version, but receive both versions in your collection.

u/WotC_Jay Will we get refunded wild cards we used to construct copies of these cards? I burned wild cards based on the announcement that these cards would be standard legal. For example copies of goblin trashmaster for my standard b01 goblin deck. Now wotc is going back on their statement. It is super shady to remove cards and not compensate players.
Took a bit to get going, but we are now doing a grant to return the Rare wildcards spent on ANB cards. This should be complete by Friday.
So when do I get refunded the WCs for the base set cards I crafted to play in Standard?
Why didn't you guys make this change obvious in the UI? Like with a big popup notice saying "Your Arena Base set cards are now only legal in Alchemy"?
I could have gotten behind this change except for these two issues. As it is, I feel ripped off of WCs and frustrated with how it was rolled out. A friend of mine is a newer player and we spent way too long trying to figure out what happened and if it weren't for this sub, we'd probably still be mystified.

You better offer wildcards for this. It pretty much killed Goblins decks and anyone who started playing recently just lost 6/10 of the starter decks.
The fact all these changes pretty much push people into the Alchemy queue doesn't look good either.

Hey Jay! Also, Sparky won't let you play against her if you use any rebalanced card. Is that also something you're working on?
Yup, that’s something we’re working to enable
Was this change announced anywhere? I don't see any patch notes for today's update.
I'm mostly in favour of removing the beginner set cards, but it's super confusing to log in and see your decks listed as being illegal with no indication of why. :/
Agreed, and sorry for the confusion. This was supposed to be in the State of the Game, but unfortunately got left out. It's a change I think most people will like, but making it confusing certainly doesn't help perception :(
With this release we removed the Arena Base Set cards from Standard legality and moved them to only being legal in our digital-only formats (Alchemy, Historic, Historic Brawl, etc.). This makes Standard exactly match tabletop in both best-of-one and best-of-three. Brawl uses Standard legality, so cards like Murder or Zephyr Gull are no longer allowed because they're not in Standard.
I think the Brawl format staples should be explicitly allowed, however. We'll get cards like Arcane Signet and Command Tower added back soon.
Thanks, this looks great!
Came here to say this. That series is so good it’s linked in Arena’s Learn More page (question mark on the upper-right).
And glad to hear you’re enjoying Jump In!
The tweet or something else I read just said back end stability fixes. Probably nothing Major
This. No player-facing changes, just some settings tweaks on the backend that should improve reliability.
Yup, since it was bugged we've disabled it now
The pack is just a standard KHM pack that’s not displaying properly for some reason. Sorry for the confusion.
hey thanks for the response. sound like the card-size artwork files (at least on desktop) are unusable for something like this?
They're small enough that they look a bit crunchy when blown up to fullscreen, yes.
They'd have the high res scans internally, but they don't want to go downloading those files locally to the client or else MtGA would add a 3GB update every new set.
This. Those loadscreens are significantly higher-res than our card art, and the HD/download time impact of increasing all of the card art to that resolution would be very high.
The same happens when trying to tap opponent's vehicles for info. Seems like the pet has too big of a hitbox.
UPDATE: Went to sleep and woke up to neopets apparently being a thing 😁.
Also WOTC refunded my draft completely, so while my run was a bit soured by the experience, I give them credit in this regard.
Working in software development, I know how companies can be stingy with QA staff and mostly rely on users finding bugs. With such visually-heavy set things like these are bound to happen. It always hurts developers when issues find their way into the final product.
So, whoever needs to read this, hire more QAs, they are essential to any release. No developer will test impartially or attack the software from all possible angles. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
QA's been trying all day and can't repro this - are you sure you weren't just disconnected? Were you able to cast other cards or activate other abilities? Was there anything else unusual going on with your battlefield at that time?
Don't you not lose pips for losses in Bronze?
Aha! Someone caught the mistake that I, um, clearly inserted into that answer very deliberately. Yes. (I think the general point still stands: rank gains & losses only really make sense when being measured against others of the same rank)
In order to contribute to rank, an event needs to pair by rank. (Don't want to give someone in Diamond progress for beating someone in Bronze, nor take pips away from someone in Bronze for losing to a Diamond.)
If an event pairs by rank, it changes the benefit for high skill. In a ranked event, high skill means you're playing in a higher rank bracket, which means more skilled opponents and more complex, interesting games. In an unranked event higher skill translates straightforwardly into a higher winrate. Unranked events are also a better match for the tabletop experience.
Different players prefer one experience over the other, so where we can we provide both (ranked & traditional drafts, ranked & play in constructed). Sealed play volumes aren't high enough to do this (especially with Bo3 Sealed), so we have to pick one. In this case we chose unranked because that makes Sealed a better match to a traditional pre-release, and it works well for the somewhat more casu...
Read moreHey, sorry for any confusion here. It was always the intent for the backside to have this color indicator, and it was simply a miss that it didn't. This wasn't included in the release notes for totally boring reasons - the work ticket that tracked making this change got improperly assigned to the next release (13.0), so the change didn't get picked up when we built the release notes for 12.80.
These grants are in progress currently. All players who had an event end early will receive gems equivalent to the sealed and/or draft entry fees (regardless of whether you entered with gold, gems, or tokens). You will also keep the cards from your original pool and whatever rewards you earned from the in-progress courses.
Hey u/WotC_Jay is there any update to this three weeks later? Are us Mac users now just out of luck.
We're continuing to investigate, but don't have a solution identified yet. Current line of investigation is around an issue with some graphics cards/drivers, so updating drivers might help here.
Thanks for the report. It would be super helpful if anyone experiencing this bug could list the phrase & sticker emotes they're using or file a bug (including a log that shows this happening) on our bug reporting site: https://feedback.wizards.com/forums/918667-mtg-arena-bugs
