That could indeed happen, yep. Better (CAREFULLY) build in supporting pillars beneath your base. :)

according to the wiki, destroyed stone has 1 hitpoint. It might be that I had no exploding cop in grass biome but in wasteland it creates a hole of about 1 block depth and 2-3x4 Blocks horizontally. This could easily bring down a 2x2 pillar.
