I see it as a supernatural event. The Blood Moon rises, and somehow that amplifies the reanimating force that turned the dead into zombies. At least since the invention of werewolves, people have believed in a lunar effect[en.m.wikipedia.org], where humans and others are affected physiologically by the phase of the Moon. This could be an inspiration for the game’s lore, as an alternative to the ‘mutated rabies virus’ or other tropes found in zombie fiction.
Anyway, a weird lunar phenomenon makes the sky turn red, and it also agitates the zombies. Like Superman draws his abilities from our yellow sunlight, the zombies become ‘super,’ directly or indirectly, by the red light of the Blood Moon. They move faster, and they know where you are simply because their regular senses (smell in particular) get better during the Blood Moon.
I like the supernatural explanation, because you have to just accept it out of the gate as an axiom of the game’s universe. No need for silly debates on what zombies could or couldn’t do on ‘realism’ grounds. You say up front that it’s magic, and they can do whatever you want.
I don’t expect the devs to embrace this angle, but until they present their own story it seems like the simplest way to understand the game world.
P.S. The lunar cycle being one week instead of one month doesn't bother me. The days last one hour, there's 18 hours of daylight every day, crops grow in 3 days, etc. etc., so I just accept that things are on a different timescale.
