You will (Generally) Experience the following:
First, to note, You can always opt into the last version of any previous alpha. So once A21 comes out, you can opt into A20.x and continue your A20 playthrough, if you had one.
From there:
Minor versions, such as A20.1->A20.2->A20.3, you can carry your save through. There might be some minor issues, but generally speaking, your save should be fine to continue from the start of a major version to the end of that major version.
Major versions, such as A19->A20->A21, You can't carry your save through. The game may or may not show your old save in the menu depending on the exact versions in question; But will not allow you to load it. Your old saves are not affected in any way; They're perfectly fine and safe. In order to continue playing any old save you must opt into the major version the save was for.
In your specific case, You could play A20.x, then when A21 goes live, opt into A20.x via the beta menu, and carry on with your save. But if you started on A20.x, then want to experience A21.x, you'll have to start a new save on A21.x
