Ah yes, the design change. Wanna narrow that down a bit? :steamlaughcry:

I would almost guess you hit the nail on the head with the idea that you have just become too familiar with the game. That I can understand.
Probably but I played for 8 years and never got tired of it. A16 had great zombies and combat but the overall level of difficulty was so easy I shelved it for a while, then the removal of small rewards for daily activities, LBD, but I think in general it the move towards appealing to a more casual audience, which is of course more popular for the designers and sales but not so great for old hardheads like myself. I love so many things about the game. The new weather lighting and storms, small things like jumping my bicycle over every bump on my way to a destination, the new poi's, the new terrifying dog textures, the aggro system, I love them all. I guess its just too easy to start now and I never do trader quest. I would probably do them if the rewards were just a few coins but getting a green iron axe when I still make tan stone tools just kinda ruins the progression for me. But I think I may just have to shelve it for a while. Even Darkness Falls couldn't save me this time.
Unfortunately, I think a fair portion of the whole 'It's too easy' part stems from you being such an old hat at the game. Even if you go back to A12, I'd wager you'd still have an easy time of it. Perhaps you wouldn't get so much ammo or green gear, but.. You simply know so much about the game, and are so practiced at it, that even without those boons you knock the game over the head and win.

Remember, Back in A12 the zombie AI was actually dumber than a sack of wet mud bricks. They couldn't path find for ♥♥♥♥♥ and could be made completely superfluous with a simple raised platform or by digging three blocks down and putting something over your head.

There was no rage mechanic to spice things up and make even simple zombies a potential threat. There was no injury system that made getting hit threatening. There were no vultures to pose a danger, no demolition men to watch your shots around- The overall difficulty of the game back then was much lower than it is now.

And I think you're experiencing the same with Darkness Falls. You've acclimated. You know what to do, when to do it, how to deal with the threats in an efficient manner.. There's no novelty, No difficulty left in it that you are unable to deal with.. Nothing left to challenge you or inspire you. Nothing left to struggle against.

And..There...really isn't any solution to that. You can't un-learn things.
