Okay. I’ll object to the assertion that there’s no believable scenario where towns aren’t always connected by paved roads. This is the zombie apocalypse, with some hints that a nuclear war has occurred. And cutting off roads & bridges is a standard strategy in warfare. It may have plausibly been months or years since a government existed with the capacity to rebuild and maintain infrastructure. So paved roads between towns need not be guaranteed.
