Steam only tracks total number of people playing and total number of "servers". (Do note that some servers are actually just closed peer-to-peer games.)

This doesn't differentiate what version people are playing currently. Looking at historical data only shows that the number of active players has pretty steadily increased over the years with pretty average cycles.


Now the developer may have access to data that shows what % are playing what version, but that is only as accurate as what would be listed in Steam. When I go do play an older version, I just launch it from that versions folder on the disk. My Steam client is usually on the latest dev build. I keep all the other stable versions in separate folders.
