Alpha 16 was one of the buggiest versions of the game aside from a17. The only reason people say it's the best, is because it was the last version that still had some of the LBD system left.
In that regard, a15 would have been the best, but it wasn't around for as long as a16 was.
You have to know what the OP uses to set the bar for "enjoyable". Apparently it wasn't set on being able to have long-term saves or riding a minibike across the map safely.
