s | and David uh why don't we get them on |
s | screen and how are you guys doing thanks |
s | for joining us |
s | hi guys hi |
s | hey guys yeah happy to be here |
s | yeah doing pretty good |
s | excellent uh for some quick |
s | introductions why don't we start with uh |
s | going around the room uh when did you |
s | guys start working at SBI and what do |
s | you guys do there |
s | I guess we'll start with Robin and then |
s | work our way through well I was going to |
s | say we're going to start with the person |
s | who's been with sandbox the longest yeah |
s | that that is actually me surprisingly uh |
s | I'm hi I'm I'm David uh I'm the CTO of |
s | sandbox and I am actually one of the |
s | original founders of the company the |
s | others don't like to be on camera |
s | uh but but I'm here yeah so what I do at |
s | sandbox is I'm responsible for |
s | everything technical ultimately |
s | and I literally wrote the first lines of |
s | code for that wonderful game |
s | I'll go next then uh uh people probably |
s | know know me from the dev talk from the |
s | occasional interview and early in the |
s | back in the days also from press uh |
s | releases and and interviews I'm Robin |
s | I'm the CEO of sandbox interactive and |
s | I'm primarily the game director for |
s | Albion online so uh my job is uh both |
s | the creative direction for the game but |
s | also the resource allocation where where |
s | do our what what are we doing and how |
s | are we doing it that's my job and uh |
s | yeah get a lot of love for it and a lot |
s | of hate for it |
s | oh I can't relate to that |
s | [Music] |
s | so I guess then it's me I'm Michelle I'm |
s | a joint sandbox in 2015 and preparation |
s | for the summer Alpha |
s | and since beta 1 oil preparation for |
s | beta1 I have mainly been responsible a |
s | for the combat for especially PVP part |
s | and the items for players or all player |
s | items and also have been involved in |
s | various other |
s | um features and game design topics in |
s | general mostly related to PVP |
s | all right uh you guys talked a little |
s | bit about how you started there do you |
s | want to talk about maybe the first |
s | things you did there because it's very |
s | interesting to have all of you on and I |
s | just want to give the the viewer a bit |
s | of an understanding of how you started |
s | where you where you are |
s | I guess you can go in the same order too |
s | with David yeah absolutely so the first |
s | thing I did wow when we |
s | basically when when I was approached |
s | with the idea to to Albion |
s | um the first thing I did was a lot of |
s | research actually right we uh actually |
s | talked to people who had done MMOs |
s | before because we had not |
s | um we we yeah did a lot of research I |
s | read absolutely everything there is to |
s | read about online games about |
s | multiplayer games |
s | um yeah and we talked to some Partners |
s | uh middleware providers Etc and uh yeah |
s | create a technical Concepts and then |
s | then I created an empty folder called |
s | all the Albion online and I set up the |
s | the directory structure of the project |
s | and that is largely still there |
s | and um then yeah and then we started to |
s | write the first lines of code and and |
s | started to make a prototype for the game |
s | right of course we didn't know where |
s | this was going back then um the first |
s | thing to do was really make a prototype |
s | figure out if if a we can make this |
s | technically and B if the game design |
s | works at all |
s | and a little bit later in this show |
s | we're gonna see one of those very early |
s | uh versions yeah I'm looking forward to |
s | that |
s | yeah I I think I'm gonna go next um I I |
s | was kind of called in a little while |
s | after after that |
s | um |
s | uh I had I had been working in online |
s | games for a while |
s | um my entire career has been working on |
s | games with swords and spells and RPG |
s | stats |
s | um and in 2014 I was approached uh by a |
s | friend and also a game designer who said |
s | he had just interviewed for a job with a |
s | with us with a small group of of people |
s | with a very ambitious project |
s | um who who might be just the right |
s | people for me |
s | um |
s | and yeah I I uh I went there I listened |
s | to what the plan was I thought it was |
s | completely insane and I went for it |
s | because because it was the |
s | uh basically the dream come true as a |
s | project |
s | um |
s | I mean I I was a ultimate online gamer |
s | of the earliest days I imported Ultima |
s | Online into Germany when it was released |
s | so I could play it from here and um it |
s | was yeah it it was the perfect project |
s | so I joined uh as soon as I could and my |
s | first role was actually to tie a lot of |
s | the early ideas together so for example |
s | back then the mob factions I mean this |
s | was in Alpha right early Alpha for |
s | Albion so a lot of the base Tech was |
s | already there the stuff that David had |
s | been working on |
s | um you will see that in the alpha |
s | footage as well but like we didn't have |
s | mob factions properly defined at that |
s | point we didn't have a main sort of |
s | World building idea and that was one of |
s | the earliest things I worked on and |
s | specifically actually I I one of the |
s | first things I did was balance the mobs |
s | I think for |
s | a winter Alpha in 2014 or a summer no |
s | probably a summer Alpha in 2014. |
s | all right and Michael |
s | yeah I joined then a while after in |
s | April 2015 and um after getting |
s | introduced to the game and and learning |
s | all systems the first big task I had was |
s | quite a big one and a very nice |
s | opportunity that is kind of to define |
s | the core abilities and the core combat |
s | for the PVP situation and that is a very |
s | nice chance because often when you join |
s | a project that's kind of settled and |
s | then you have to work what it's there |
s | but here since it was still early there |
s | was still a lot of of |
s | um Room to Move it in a way or influence |
s | the direction that was a |
s | really nice that was a really nice |
s | opportunity and I'm really thankful for |
s | that |
s | and um so when we when I worked on this |
s | so the first ideas or the direction I |
s | wanted to go in was definitely since I |
s | liked these more um skill based games |
s | and I'm a big fighting game fan too I |
s | wanted to try to make this combat less |
s | about stats and and have a strong focus |
s | on out playing your opponents and also I |
s | don't like virtual lag that's why we |
s | don't had any crits maybe some person |
s | like it that much or do it's about PVE |
s | Centric thing but I want to have it very |
s | clearly focused on PVP and so my biggest |
s | role model back then already was I kind |
s | of try to look at mobas what they do |
s | because they had a different |
s | um perspectives they had a skill based |
s | combat and we had also not many skill |
s | buttons so not a traditional MMO combat |
s | where you have like 20 skills or so but |
s | a rather short selection but every skill |
s | matters a lot and there's a lot of |
s | outplay potential |
s | and that was kind of the role model of |
s | course we have to go bit back |
s | technically David uh can definitely |
s | relate to that because we can't have the |
s | same reaction times and the same um ping |
s | in a globe on a global server with uh |
s | that many players in one cluster so we |
s | have to |
s | pay attention to that or keep that in |
s | mind and build everything around that |
s | um but yeah that was a very very |
s | um nice task and I'm really thankful to |
s | get the opportunity to work on that and |
s | that was then |
s | that we wrote out with uh beta1 that was |
s | the first |
s | big task ahead well Albion online might |
s | not have a lot of skills you can use at |
s | one time like I said we only have the |
s | six skills we use at one time but the |
s | combinations of skills I don't think |
s | there's many games out there that allow |
s | you to combine skills the way that |
s | Albion does so to balance the skills |
s | that you're going to use and how they |
s | work together is so much greater than |
s | even the ones where you get page after |
s | page because you're locked to those |
s | skills you're only going to get those |
s | pages and those pages only have to |
s | interact in a certain way those skills |
s | only have to interact in a certain way |
s | here |
s | because of the fact that you are what |
s | you wear your skills can be anything and |
s | you're going to have some really wild |
s | interactions between them |
s | yeah yeah that's also the fact that like |
s | it's kind of like um the stick building |
s | process in a cut trading card game right |
s | yeah that's where I compare kind of |
s | create your own decade in a limited way |
s | yeah you have a deck of like six cards |
s | yes |
s | exactly but it's but it's a deck where |
s | you can have you can pull from really a |
s | lot of cards right and that was actually |
s | one of the the things that I thought was |
s | crazy at the beginning coming from from |
s | games that were trying to control the |
s | balancing to such a degree that nobody |
s | would ever uh approve of such a concept |
s | just because it's so challenging to |
s | control but that was part of what I |
s | thought was extremely appealing and and |
s | part of what I still think is very |
s | exciting about working at sandbox and |
s | working on Albion online is that we |
s | we never tried sort of the the the the |
s | the path that other people have have |
s | already gone or like that that would be |
s | safe to do |
s | we we really like to uh to try to do |
s | things nobody's done before or |
s | nobody dares to do it's just so complex |
s | what you guys do it's really quite a |
s | challenge |
s | um David you were there from the the |
s | very beginning can you tell us what that |
s | pitch was that really brought you on |
s | board and |
s | uh convinced you to join this team and |
s | start working on Albion online |
s | yeah for me it was maybe a little bit |
s | different because uh I like I said I'm |
s | one of the founders so the situation was |
s | pretty much that uh I I had my I had a |
s | small company at that time and we were |
s | mostly doing games on the Nintendo DS |
s | and and stuff like that |
s | and then I was approached by uh actually |
s | yeah by by a guy with a concept for a |
s | game and that game was was Albion online |
s | and he was looking for uh basically |
s | looking for a team to build the game |
s | with and and looking to you know found a |
s | new company |
s | and uh I thought that was a a brilliant |
s | idea right it was basically a dream come |
s | true I I had for many years tried to |
s | build my own my own company |
s | uh and and and suddenly there was a |
s | chance to make some something uh that |
s | was a lot bigger and a lot more |
s | ambitious than anything I had I had done |
s | before so |
s | I was I was actually super excited about |
s | that and I'm I'm not really a game |
s | designer right I'm quite different from |
s | from Robin and and Mikhail in that |
s | regard uh for me it was all about the |
s | technical challenge right and the |
s | opportunity to build to build an MMO uh |
s | that's something I just couldn't |
s | couldn't let go |
s | um we're going to be looking at some of |
s | that Alpha footage that you brought in |
s | just a moment do you guys want to talk |
s | about some of the differences that were |
s | in Alpha before we look at it compared |
s | to what actually made it into launch |
s | I mean be easier to talk about what's |
s | still there I guess not no there's a lot |
s | of stuff still there but yeah it's |
s | actually fascinating I can I can quickly |
s | say what the original pitch was that uh |
s | that I was also approached with the idea |
s | was to have a very hardcore game |
s | something that's that was more like |
s | Ultima Online and a lot less like World |
s | of Warcraft |
s | uh because obviously going |
s | to compete with World of Warcraft was |
s | insane right we were never gonna do that |
s | we were you know looking to do a a niche |
s | game |
s | um so the original pitch was essentially |
s | we're doing a you know medieval version |
s | of Eve online but we're doing League of |
s | Legends combat |
s | that was kind of the idea |
s | um so again very much focused on PVP |
s | very much focused on guilt versus guilt |
s | and uh not at all focused on PVE for |
s | instance initially we even believed that |
s | we wouldn't need PVE at all right that |
s | we would not need dungeons we would not |
s | need monsters we would not need loot |
s | chests and and and stuff like that that |
s | it would all be about PVP and |
s | essentially Albion is that game but we |
s | obviously realize that we need a little |
s | bit of of content to fill the you know |
s | gaps between pvping |
s | um |
s | but that was the initial pitch right |
s | crafting PVP very hardcore for loot also |
s | part of the initial initial idea and we |
s | were not at all concerned with Graphics |
s | or or appearance right the idea was to |
s | make a relatively simple game that |
s | didn't you know need to look like much |
s | because it would appeal to a hardcore |
s | audience that wouldn't care right uh |
s | fortunately we quickly found out that we |
s | could do something that actually looks |
s | nice and that we could potentially |
s | appear to a broader audience uh so we |
s | went for that but yeah that was the |
s | initial pitch in a way I'm very |
s | impressed with how the the graphics have |
s | evolved while still keeping that |
s | simplistic style that allows for uh |
s | cross-platform play such as on the |
s | mobile and stuff like that it's so |
s | impressive how you guys have |
s | continuously improved that I still |
s | always uh talk about the day we gained |
s | fingers it was a big day for for the |
s | people of Albion |
s | you have no idea how much it pains our |
s | art director that he has to be or that |
s | he did that you know one of the |
s | challenges obviously is to be |
s | conservative with with with resources |
s | not only because it's cross-platform |
s | that's one part of it but also because |
s | we have hundreds of characters |
s | potentially in a fight and we don't have |
s | the advantage of LOD right because of |
s | the isometric perspective you can't |
s | really Fade Out detail based on distance |
s | which you would normally do in in a 3D |
s | World game so |
s | um |
s | yeah there's there's a lot of technical |
s | or a lot of challenges to the to the art |
s | side but I I think it's a very |
s | interesting |
s | how from that early version that David |
s | built or or the the guys back then then |
s | built the concept evolved quite quickly |
s | as we started to notice that there is a |
s | big interest in this game right because |
s | obviously we we didn't start like a big |
s | uh |
s | studio with with a massive backing from |
s | a publisher where everybody sat there |
s | and said all right look this is what's |
s | this is what is going to be it's gonna |
s | cost this chunk of money but it's going |
s | to have a huge audience so you know we |
s | go all out from the very beginning it |
s | was much rather a you know we have this |
s | idea we want to do this game we have |
s | limited resources let's let's push it to |
s | a certain point let's see what interest |
s | there is |
s | and and take it from there and and we |
s | very soon realize that there is a lot of |
s | interest and as the interest was growing |
s | we started to up the ambition as well |
s | right so like like you said the graphics |
s | the quality of Graphics was pushed up it |
s | was pushed into into full 3d obviously |
s | um you know we added a soundtrack that |
s | was even recorded |
s | with a life Orchestra and all the things |
s | that you would expect from a uh you know |
s | a high quality MMO but that wasn't what |
s | we knew what we knew we were doing from |
s | the very beginning because we had no |
s | idea |
s | how a MMO that was so against the |
s | mainstream at that time would even fare |
s | in terms of like interest right |
s | yeah everything at the time was pretty |
s | much theme park it was very much a theme |
s | park world out there and then Albion |
s | came along and it said play with each |
s | other instead you know like you are the |
s | content the other players of the content |
s | don't look for us to make the content |
s | for you you're the content creator |
s | absolutely and that was also a a |
s | financial decision because these theme |
s | park MMOs easily cost a hundred million |
s | dollars and uh to be honest we did not |
s | have that kind of money and we were not |
s | we were not going to get it uh so we we |
s | knew we had to take a completely |
s | different route |
s | but why don't we take a look at that |
s | that road that you guys took in some of |
s | the early Alpha footage I understand |
s | that you put together a build and you |
s | did a bit of recording on that and we |
s | talked about it just yesterday Bogle do |
s | you think you can uh play that for us |
s | yeah we're going to introduce it right |
s | now |
s | David you brought with you a build from |
s | alpha of a video uh what kind of things |
s | are we going to see on this what |
s | actually are we looking at here |
s | okay so this is a very old build that is |
s | actually from December 2012. so this is |
s | like six seven months into development |
s | and uh yeah it's almost 10 years old now |
s | this is a very early build of the game |
s | that was never shown to anyone outside |
s | of the company this is an internal build |
s | that we use to play test a our early |
s | vision of the game this is obviously |
s | very rough but you'll see that a lot is |
s | already there |
s | so you see this is all placeholder |
s | artwork obviously a lot of it not |
s | finished very rough icons actually |
s | downloaded from the internet mostly uh |
s | because we didn't have time to make our |
s | own |
s | yeah you see us running around |
s | Gathering resources and uh yeah trying |
s | to build up our our first settlement |
s | built the first craft buildings we're |
s | crafting the first tools here selecting |
s | the first spells for an item |
s | and I see them here they're actually are |
s | they they're crafting and they're |
s | putting the skills on the items |
s | themselves that's something we don't |
s | have to do anymore |
s | uh right yeah back then you had to |
s | select the skills when you crafted the |
s | item and you couldn't change them |
s | anymore nowadays you can just switch |
s | them at any at any time |
s | yeah that's a big resource we're seeing |
s | right here big resource node |
s | also something that's changed there is |
s | the way that the nodes look completely |
s | they uh very generic here that kind of |
s | looks like our tier one stone |
s | yeah and that's the wolf's uh funny |
s | thing about this build is that uh |
s | there's no live animals here because we |
s | didn't have any mobs in this build |
s | originally actually we wanted to make |
s | the game without any PVE right it was |
s | supposed to be a PVP only game |
s | so we thought We're not gonna need mobs |
s | but we we soon changed our mind |
s | and here we see buildings in progress |
s | where it looked like they were there was |
s | a timer going on those buildings |
s | yeah that's that's a mechanic we don't |
s | have anymore so this was uh more similar |
s | to a mobile game right where you set up |
s | a building and it would say okay and now |
s | wait three hours till construction is |
s | finished that was a bad idea |
s | and they're showing the the building |
s | menu that they're using here which is |
s | very similar to the building menu that |
s | we have |
s | on the islands that exist now like the |
s | player islands and the guild Islands |
s | very similar but with a a very basic |
s | coat of paint yeah uh it is basically |
s | the same menu still right it has |
s | obviously received a facelift but |
s | essentially it is still the same menu |
s | that's the player house right there the |
s | tent you just saw that's uh that's |
s | basically the tier one player house that |
s | you could build you still get that on |
s | the island too right yeah we don't have |
s | the tent anymore but uh we still have |
s | the player houses so you see that a lot |
s | of elements are already there right we |
s | already had all of those ideas and if |
s | you look down in the in the middle |
s | there's the auction house uh icon oh |
s | that's the auction house icon down there |
s | so you have your inventory or auction |
s | house and what is the third icon |
s | I don't recall |
s | it's your home Islands yeah it's some |
s | kind of home feature clearly something |
s | like that yeah it's quite interesting |
s | right so this is this version of the |
s | game already has guilts |
s | it already has an auction house even |
s | though we're not showing it in this |
s | video |
s | but it doesn't have mobs right you can |
s | clearly see where the focus of the game |
s | was back then |
s | all about the player to player |
s | interactions of Guild versus Guild and |
s | player versus player and players |
s | creating the content not the world |
s | itself |
s | that you don't need NPCs if you've got |
s | players to fight |
s | yeah exactly and the red wall we just |
s | saw is actually a territory barrier so |
s | we already had territories and you could |
s | close the barrier to let others in or |
s | not |
s | and the building right here we're seeing |
s | right now is the smelter building and |
s | you see that there's basically a heating |
s | system going right so had you had to |
s | feed it with uh combustible materials |
s | and uh bring up the heat in order to |
s | smelt iron |
s | now |
s | yeah we have a fair PVP actually |
s | you see again all all placeholder uh |
s | icons uh actually play solar abilities |
s | uh pretty much right we're still testing |
s | what we what we could do |
s | but yeah you could uh you could already |
s | fight targeting was horrible there was |
s | no no balance at all but there were |
s | already different tiers of items |
s | different abilities you could use and |
s | there was already full loot right when |
s | you |
s | when you killed somebody you could |
s | already pick up all this stuff |
s | and you are dead and you can respond yes |
s | all right thank you guys for uh hanging |
s | out with us on that Robin you were |
s | saying earlier that it would be easier |
s | for you to say this things that had |
s | stayed than the things that that weren't |
s | there you know weren't there anymore |
s | um one of the things that did stay and |
s | you can see this is that there's these |
s | buttons on the side for example because |
s | Albion has always been intended to be a |
s | cross-platform game before we move on to |
s | the rest of this you want to talk about |
s | that a little bit how from the very |
s | earliest days of Albion it really was |
s | meant to be a crap cross-platform game |
s | yeah and I mean that's that's a bit of a |
s | funny story too right |
s | um basically when the development on the |
s | game was started it was a time where |
s | game engines like Unity for example |
s | we're we're really beginning to |
s | um establish their |
s | you could almost say dominance |
s | um because of their cross-platform |
s | compatibility and |
s | it was the time of the tablet height |
s | where the expectation was that 10 years |
s | down the road |
s | possibly nobody would have PCS |
s | and you know while we know that that is |
s | a repeated |
s | statement frequently that that you know |
s | the PC is eventually not going to be |
s | used anymore and every all the time it's |
s | wrong |
s | um |
s | we |
s | didn't want to build on an MMO that |
s | would be stuck on one particular |
s | platform because our intention with |
s | Albion has always been to run it for a |
s | really long time |
s | because we're looking at other games |
s | that were started in the late 90s or or |
s | early 2000s that are still going through |
s | strong and you know those are our |
s | references we want to |
s | keep going with Albion online for as |
s | long as we can and for that we wanted |
s | something that technologically would be |
s | uh say future proof and and you know |
s | funnily enough |
s | actually the the mobile version of |
s | Albion online |
s | uh |
s | actually kind of proves that we were |
s | right in that because there are certain |
s | countries in the world where there is |
s | very few people |
s | um actually being able to play on PC but |
s | there's a lot of people joining from |
s | mobile devices nowadays so you know that |
s | while it might not might not be true in |
s | in our home country and a lot of other |
s | countries there are certainly certainly |
s | parts of the world that we are only |
s | reaching because Albion online can be |
s | played on mobile devices as well as |
s | PC and all the other platforms |
s | absolutely the mobile launch has really |
s | I feel like it's gone beyond |
s | expectations personally |
s | um I was kind of of the impression that |
s | it was going to be very much you know |
s | Farmers you know farming |
s | um do you guys feel that this went |
s | beyond expectations that the mobile |
s | launch did more than just provide people |
s | with an alternative access point for |
s | farming |
s | uh it it must have uh if we look at |
s | numbers right now we we see that like |
s | half of the new players are joining from |
s | mobile devices |
s | so that's clearly not the existing |
s | players farming it's clearly uh like |
s | like Robin said lots of people uh from |
s | probably from countries where mobile |
s | gaming is dominant and not PC gaming but |
s | also also generations of players right |
s | like I'm I'm starting to feel my age as |
s | a gamer after after you know almost 10 |
s | years of headlining uh a a game like |
s | Albion online |
s | you start to realize that you didn't |
s | don't have that much time for gaming if |
s | you're actually working on something |
s | like this you you you you get to play a |
s | few of the anticipated titles that but |
s | that's about it |
s | um and you know I I I realize that there |
s | is a real big disconnect between myself |
s | for example and and the younger |
s | generation that primarily starts playing |
s | on mobile devices and it doesn't |
s | necessarily uh start playing on a PC |
s | just because also a lot of a lot of |
s | households have done done away with a |
s | home PC |
s | um you know it I think I think that's |
s | that's something really interesting and |
s | and and anecdotally |
s | um |
s | you know there's guilds that are |
s | entirely made from from mobile players |
s | obviously |
s | um but that is something for example |
s | that I did not anticipate where I didn't |
s | you know I I I thought |
s | it would be used in a cross-play |
s | capacity a lot but I didn't think we |
s | would really see builds that are almost |
s | entirely or even entirely made up just |
s | from people playing exclusively |
s | exclusively mobile which was probably |
s | naive for me but that's that's slightly |
s | where I come from right yeah clearly our |
s | initial expectation 10 years ago was was |
s | very different |
s | um like Robin said we had the the tablet |
s | type so we knew okay we're gonna be on |
s | tablets just in case people are not |
s | gonna have PCS anymore and everything is |
s | going to be on tablet but we completely |
s | ruled out the possibility that anyone |
s | would play on a mobile phone |
s | uh because clearly the screen was too |
s | small to ever play an MMO on that |
s | um so even that very old version that we |
s | just saw that was |
s | working on an iPad one back in the day |
s | so we've always had a working mobile |
s | version of Albion online basically from |
s | day one that is clearly thanks to the |
s | unity engine and and and that uh and a |
s | lot of hard work on our side too and a |
s | lot of hard work on our sides yeah |
s | clearly the art style uh needs to work |
s | with mobile etc etc so uh for a long |
s | time we've swallowed all the |
s | disadvantages of being mobile compatible |
s | and did not release the mobile version |
s | so I'm really happy that finally |
s | happened |
s | um but yeah for me phones was a big |
s | surprise because for the longest time we |
s | had completely ruled out even the |
s | possibility that this game would work on |
s | phones |
s | actually from a friend of mine the kids |
s | they create they are playing Albion on |
s | phones in their school he told me that |
s | and they created a guild and they're |
s | communicating on their phones via |
s | discorder that was also uh very |
s | surprising for me and they they |
s | are playing that but to be honest yes |
s | there might be a lot of these players |
s | watching right now and and thinking like |
s | yeah you know we you guys are so uh |
s | outdated yeah you're always you're |
s | always a product of your generation and |
s | your upbringing you know your our most |
s | intense gaming years were our early 20s |
s | and and late teens I guess and and you |
s | know I I still carried my PC to land |
s | parties and the big |
s | tube monitors my PC had a handle for for |
s | land arcades that's how often I was |
s | dragging it around and of course now |
s | they have their mobile PCS in their |
s | pockets of course they're gonna say what |
s | are you guys doing carrying around that |
s | 50 pound piece of uh antique when you |
s | could just play on your phones I mean |
s | you guys do have phones don't you |
s | yeah we do |
s | I want to get back to that video that we |
s | just saw because uh there was a lot of |
s | talk and chat they were really impressed |
s | by that I want to give a shout out to |
s | Elsa for helping us with that video and |
s | all of the other great videos that he |
s | has done throughout the years there has |
s | been a huge shift I mean you've always |
s | had great ads you guys have always had |
s | great ads great Dev talks uh great |
s | trailers and stuff but there's been a |
s | shift and a push to have better media in |
s | Albion online you guys have done a great |
s | job do you guys have any specifically |
s | fond memories of some of these ads that |
s | you worked on or a specific Dev talk or |
s | a point in this process that really |
s | sticks out to you |
s | got a few uh yeah absolutely a font I |
s | don't know I remember we at a very early |
s | point I don't know which year it was |
s | probably 14 15. uh we did a trailer uh |
s | at a at an actual windmill which was a |
s | great back background and the only thing |
s | I remember about that shoot is that I |
s | had a granular fever on that day and my |
s | throat hurt like hell and I don't know |
s | how I how I got through that shoot |
s | that's what I remember I've done a few |
s | I've done a few death talks and live |
s | appearances completely drugged up on on |
s | on cold medicine because I've had such a |
s | bad fever the queen trailer for example |
s | was completely on a fear actually that |
s | that shoe that David is referencing I |
s | was one of my earliest videos I did for |
s | Albion and it was also a very poor |
s | performance because for some reason |
s | video team we were working with decided |
s | to put us on these tall boxes that we |
s | had to balance on while doing our talk |
s | so that they could get the windmill in |
s | the background and I was nervous about |
s | my first video appearance and then I had |
s | to also worry about not falling off |
s | these boxes is one of the worst uh one |
s | of the worst experiences filming for |
s | Albion online |
s | um I mean my I I've already obviously |
s | had a quite a few appearances my |
s | favorite has to be the mobile launch |
s | trailer |
s | um just because |
s | it was |
s | just very fun from a creative process |
s | perspective to the execution to |
s | everything the only thing I regret in |
s | that one is it's a very similar |
s | situation that my short appearance in |
s | the video |
s | um had to be done |
s | in like one or two takes balancing on |
s | the edge of a staircase |
s | and like not not even getting a chance |
s | to do this I think I got it to do it |
s | twice but like |
s | not really a chance to do any to do |
s | anything uh about like my performance |
s | and I'm certainly not an actor but um |
s | I uh I quite enjoyed that overall |
s | experience I also really liked how it |
s | turned out a shout out shout out to |
s | Watchmen by the way Watchman Productions |
s | in Berlin who who are our long-term |
s | partners for |
s | our video production |
s | always lovely to work with those guys |
s | that's fantastic I really have uh |
s | enjoyed a lot of those ads and the |
s | mobile ad specifically it really really |
s | just it's fantastic it's funny it's kind |
s | of like just goofy in a way that really |
s | um I feel like one of the things that |
s | you guys do best and it's really low-key |
s | in Albion is throwing a little bit of |
s | humor here and there it's always kind of |
s | represented in the game and to show that |
s | in your ads to show it in everything |
s | that you do is kind of cool it really |
s | personalizes you guys as a development |
s | team and it's bold to do since we're |
s | German yeah yeah it's hard to believe |
s | that you guys actually have a sense of |
s | humor |
s | changing hearts and Minds every day |
s | Ryan |
s | um do you guys speaking of like uh the |
s | the media in Albion do you guys uh pay |
s | attention to the fan made media like the |
s | music or the art |
s | uh yeah somewhat |
s | absolutely yeah do you guys have any |
s | favorite music because I know that uh a |
s | lot of the guys here in chat are big |
s | fans of the Albion fan created music |
s | yeah I have fun it's uh Judy boots it's |
s | my favorite I think and uh the second |
s | would be probably the song about the |
s | rats was the passive on the boots or the |
s | carry away on my boots yeah those two |
s | are really great |
s | no that is this type of content it's |
s | really um nice to see if you work on |
s | this game like because like the terms of |
s | Albion it becomes like its own words |
s | like I I'm gonna Judy boot this like |
s | they make a word out of it and um |
s | that is very uh satisfying to see like |
s | that you have such a connection bird |
s | with these players that they put us into |
s | their everyday vocabulary kind of like |
s | it comes in terms of it on its own |
s | that's really cool also the passion that |
s | they create this kind of content is a |
s | really cool |
s | I have I have two uh two things to share |
s | here so one we have a in our internal |
s | Communications we have a fan art Channel |
s | where like if anybody spots fan art |
s | there we'll throw it in there and just |
s | re you know the team reacts to to the |
s | fan art and there's one thing that we've |
s | been super happy about there's actually |
s | a couple of fan art pieces framed up in |
s | in in the office that we were sent |
s | um we have all the artworks that were |
s | ever created for Albion online uh lined |
s | up in the uh in the office and there's a |
s | few fan art pieces that we were sending |
s | on those walls as well so |
s | um fan art is great and then |
s | uh the other community created content |
s | that I personally love is is the |
s | streamers |
s | um I I I once did a super cut of like |
s | you know Great Moments in I'll be an |
s | online streaming with just all this raw |
s | emotion that we're getting from the |
s | streamers and that's you know that's |
s | really what we work for so no sexual |
s | reactions and that you know those |
s | that excitement I I can't totally relate |
s | to when you have like a really tough |
s | week and it has a really a lot of stuff |
s | uh so they had problems then it it also |
s | gives a lot of energy to just watch a |
s | stream and see how the players are |
s | engaged at this sometimes it can be a |
s | bit frustrating but for the most part |
s | you see like how how much they are |
s | engaged and invested into this game and |
s | how much they enjoy it and like you see |
s | also cool interactions in this game |
s | happening that is actually the most one |
s | of the most gratifying parts of this job |
s | I would say |
s | because that's why you really can see it |
s | through the player's eyes right |
s | otherwise we kind of have to analyze |
s | data we play it ourselves a bit but it's |
s | very different to see this raw emotion |
s | from the Stream |
s | and it's very different than the forums |
s | too generally forums you're going to get |
s | like Peak emotions oh my gosh fanboying |
s | you know like you guys are so great or |
s | you guys are the worst how could you |
s | dare touch my weapon and make it two |
s | percent less effective don't you know |
s | now that I have to quit the game yeah |
s | yeah and also just think that each uh |
s | Forum already does they have kind of |
s | like their own tone you know of kind of |
s | feedback you get like this |
s | you get like a specific type of I try to |
s | pay a bit attention it always depends on |
s | how busy we are so if I have time I'd |
s | usually try to scroll a bit through and |
s | even if I don't reply I try to read and |
s | make notes if there's a good point but I |
s | cannot Implement a we cannot Implement |
s | anything they ask for because that would |
s | be a very interesting uh patch they |
s | often contradict each other and be um |
s | the best thing is if you can provide |
s | like a what content you play uh stuff in |
s | and uh why you think it is broken then |
s | often we make notes and investigate it |
s | that means we have to check because we |
s | can't take everything as at face value |
s | and we don't and I often don't know the |
s | person who's posting this I I don't I'm |
s | not involved enough with many members so |
s | some I do know but a lot of this it's |
s | really hard to filter through what |
s | um how reliable each feedback is because |
s | not every feedback you get is |
s | that in depth with the game right |
s | sometimes they have a very gut feeling |
s | reaction and right oh |
s | stupid game I died to this yeah remove |
s | it uh and until something but sometimes |
s | um someone has a stone right he's like |
s | um really angry but actually he plays a |
s | lot and then it's kind of hard to |
s | distinguish this so oh he actually has a |
s | very good point it's just |
s | because the way he framed it it was |
s | kinda a bit suspicious that I thought |
s | that maybe it's just renting and then |
s | later oh no I actually had a good point |
s | it's very hard to like filter out the |
s | noise with oh yeah absolutely absolutely |
s | and when you use the the twitch streams |
s | and you watch them perform live and you |
s | see them engage with it yeah while their |
s | their own emotion to their fans Not to |
s | you who they're trying to get a change |
s | from but to their fans who they want to |
s | say this is how I'm feeling right now |
s | and this is who I want you to know when |
s | you see that reaction from them you can |
s | really go okay um yeah it helps a lot |
s | that helps a lot because I see the |
s | situation I tell what to use where he |
s | used it what happened oh that looked |
s | annoying to deal with I can't I agree I |
s | understand why he's angry and then you |
s | have to check okay that is annoying in |
s | this situation but if he knows this |
s | ability maybe uh this item has a problem |
s | then in all other content so we have to |
s | find a way to lessen this frustration |
s | here say interrupt dungeon is a typical |
s | example but don't destroy it in the open |
s | Word and um that can be very challenging |
s | because we have so many different types |
s | of content uh but uh usually we also |
s | keep like a list of uh points of stuff |
s | that we want to improve right we have to |
s | go by priority because we don't Focus |
s | 100 only on on rebalancing and patches |
s | we have to spend a lot of our energy on |
s | working on the next updates and new |
s | features and new patches |
s | but yeah we try to keep an eye on on |
s | that and make adjustments accordingly |
s | and if you have feedback please don't |
s | feel discouraged if you don't react |
s | immediately or if I especially if you |
s | don't reply we try to keep an eye on |
s | that |
s | it's it's impossible to reply to |
s | everybody and you just can't do it um |
s | we've now thrown in player feedback with |
s | with the player created fan art and |
s | music well it's similar it's similar |
s | honestly like fan art is often like one |
s | of the great ways of seeing feedback you |
s | can see where the passions lie uh like |
s | and you can see what things people |
s | really care about what they're invested |
s | in and where their love for the game |
s | lies and you know |
s | with feedback sometimes it's a mixed bag |
s | but I do want to get back to the the |
s | beginning of the game to the launch of |
s | the game five years ago and talk about |
s | like what some of your favorite memories |
s | from that time where I know it was a |
s | rough time and that there may be only |
s | like two or three favorite memories or |
s | positive memories but can we talk about |
s | some of those |
s | uh I mean I mean a lot of the the |
s | positive memories honestly from that |
s | time |
s | come simply from the work and the Spirit |
s | uh and and the and you know the |
s | camaraderie of of of |
s | the sort of work environment we were in |
s | because at the very beginning we were |
s | less than 10 people in a in a flat in |
s | Berlin uh uh before we've got the first |
s | proper office and uh |
s | it was very tight |
s | uh a group of people that was working a |
s | lot |
s | um and they were just you know they were |
s | very tired but also very excited about |
s | uh what we were building |
s | um I don't know do you guys have |
s | anything any specific moments yeah it's |
s | this incredible moment when you open the |
s | flood gates and there's just this um you |
s | know basically we have we have the |
s | ability to watch the game right it |
s | probably doesn't come as a surprise but |
s | we can like open a window into the game |
s | and watch the players play and uh you |
s | have that countdown to launch and it |
s | goes down to zero and then suddenly |
s | there's an avalanche of people you know |
s | streaming from the initial spawn point |
s | you know and that Pier it was back then |
s | into the just an avalanche of naked guys |
s | dreaming into the cities that is just an |
s | incredible sight |
s | they're like wow that was that was |
s | awesome yeah but that's already at the |
s | end well I guess we had that in every |
s | Alpha phase right yeah for launch it was |
s | obviously the most yeah every time |
s | you're surprised that people actually |
s | come right if you've set up this you've |
s | set up this big party and you've invited |
s | everyone |
s | and it's still an exciting moment when |
s | they actually come |
s | in large numbers |
s | yeah I |
s | I have some fun memories from alpha that |
s | aren't necessarily I would say enjoyable |
s | memories like I have this one rememory |
s | from an alpha where a player found an |
s | exploit during a |
s | test phase and we caught that exploit |
s | and we knew |
s | uh if they were to able to get away with |
s | what they had gained that that would |
s | probably ruin the test phase so I |
s | actually went in on my GM account and |
s | appeared in front of this player and and |
s | said look dude uh you know we we know |
s | what you've done please hand over the |
s | please hand over the merchandise uh you |
s | can continue playing I mean this is |
s | Alpha right we were supposed to be |
s | finding |
s | problems but don't ruin the test and he |
s | was like yeah I fully understand here's |
s | like the I don't know what it was 100 |
s | billion silver uh generated uh and |
s | but then he was like can I just keep a |
s | hundred million for myself and I was |
s | like no no you can't I'm letting you |
s | stay in the game I'm being nice enough |
s | but he was begging begging quite hard |
s | and and I I but but the thing is we have |
s | a we have a very very harsh stance and |
s | we still have it to this day |
s | um obviously like protecting the Albion |
s | economy is our number one |
s | priority so even an alpha I did not let |
s | him get away with any penny |
s | but uh yeah that was like I've I've done |
s | more of these |
s | direct undercover |
s | um |
s | game master actions during Alpha to to |
s | uh to protect test phases and and some |
s | of them live as well so uh there's a |
s | there's a lot happening in the in the |
s | shadows to keep Albion safe |
s | yeah there is always with an MMO you |
s | have to find some way to always be |
s | present and always monitor the world and |
s | with such a unique economy it's got to |
s | be even more difficult with Albion |
s | because it's not a NPC driven economy |
s | it's a player driven economy and it has |
s | to maintain balance just like the combat |
s | does because the the economy is is a way |
s | for people to compete in this game and |
s | if you break that that ruins the game |
s | for a huge number of people |
s | yeah yeah |
s | um there was a there have been a lot of |
s | changes since the launch of the game to |
s | now are there any of these changes that |
s | you would think that some of the newer |
s | players might be surprised about that |
s | they might not realize weren't things |
s | that were available at launch |
s | quite a lot |
s | [Laughter] |
s | that's changed that's a lot to change |
s | the one so what was today one thing is |
s | um |
s | you might have done that to launch I |
s | can't remember but the Spells were |
s | locked on your equipment I think we |
s | changed that and better already so you |
s | the crafter choose the spells for you |
s | and then you could never change them you |
s | would would need to buy the item versus |
s | beds you you wanted to add a |
s | that was maybe more interesting for |
s | Crafters but uh was quite limiting in |
s | how you play daily life because you |
s | couldn't change your spells you were |
s | really locked into that that was changed |
s | another thing also that is a smaller |
s | thing that is interesting is we didn't |
s | have a health bars for mobs in the |
s | beginning and we didn't have that at |
s | launch I think a couple updates in we |
s | got these small red health bars that are |
s | kind of like in Dark Souls games where |
s | you know can see how much that was |
s | really a difficult and a group PVE |
s | because always uh there was a high risk |
s | that everyone focused on different mob |
s | and then yeah different mobs yeah yeah |
s | yeah yeah yeah we had to call out mobs |
s | back in the beginning by name and |
s | everybody would have to pick the exact |
s | mom because you couldn't tell I didn't |
s | remember that that was that was a rough |
s | time |
s | I I think generally newer players will |
s | be surprised at or would be surprised at |
s | some |
s | uh conv lacking convenience options uh |
s | from back in the day and also |
s | um the lack of a tutorial right like |
s | when during Alpha the tutorial was |
s | basically here's here's a couple of |
s | Destiny Board nodes for you to complete |
s | and here's an island that you can get |
s | off as soon as you've completed those |
s | but |
s | you know there was like 10 steps and |
s | then |
s | you're out go go do the rest and and we |
s | were always very happy with how that |
s | um worked I mean the the crowd that we |
s | were addressing |
s | consisted of a lot of very smart people |
s | who who you know had had that drive to |
s | figure out |
s | um how the game works and very driven to |
s | explore |
s | um |
s | but you know down the road as the game |
s | became more popular Drew in a larger |
s | group of people also |
s | there was obviously a need to explain a |
s | couple of Concepts better and and do a |
s | little bit more more uh I guess |
s | hand-holding in the beginning to to help |
s | people understand what is the sort of |
s | game that they've just gotten into |
s | um but we still try with the tutorial to |
s | to to not give you a you know click here |
s | click here click here type tutorial but |
s | rather one that slowly starts to |
s | challenge you about like |
s | what am I how how am I going to go about |
s | my goals before eventually just letting |
s | you go into the world right |
s | uh one of the things that I talked with |
s | David about last night actually was some |
s | of the earliest forms of the the game |
s | had |
s | I don't want to say like tutorial guilds |
s | but they put you into two different |
s | forces so they kind of encouraged you to |
s | have active Wars right from the |
s | beginning |
s | um is there any plans to maybe |
s | incorporate into the tutorial that we |
s | have today or in the future |
s | um some way to introduce people to PVP |
s | in a more concrete way |
s | very good question uh |
s | action Warfare is is effectively aimed |
s | at at providing an early accessible PVP |
s | experience for players that once you've |
s | you know managed to to grasp a hold of |
s | the basic concepts you can go into |
s | faction Warfare and rather safely start |
s | to experiment with combat |
s | um |
s | it would be interesting to try and |
s | basically get a Battleground into the |
s | tutorial itself you obviously have a |
s | question like who are you fighting you |
s | know you're relying on other beginners |
s | to also be there which which with a |
s | 24-hour cycle might not always be that |
s | easy to provide but I'll think about |
s | it's an interesting thought yeah I think |
s | I think one other thing by the way that |
s | people would be like if we're really |
s | talking about differences between Alpha |
s | and the launch version or Alpha and |
s | nowadays |
s | we had very ambitious ideas or or |
s | naive as well about the um the use of |
s | buildings in the game right like in the |
s | alpha there were no building plots there |
s | was no building plot ownership you could |
s | just place a building wherever you liked |
s | um in the it at least in some of the |
s | earlier alphas and it very soon became |
s | obvious that the world would just be a |
s | graveyard of abandoned buildings yeah a |
s | little because people just built them |
s | everywhere |
s | um so we we developed the the plot |
s | system and then later on the island |
s | system so that every player could have a |
s | chance to build up their own uh |
s | environment because you know the other |
s | thing that we realized after we |
s | introduced plots is obviously that |
s | people occupy those plots and everybody |
s | who comes after uh |
s | is a way to also fulfill that that |
s | Albion fantasy of building up your own |
s | place |
s | it needs to be competitive at some point |
s | you can't just have permanent buildings |
s | that drop down and then people like |
s | secure land that can never be used again |
s | you're gonna run out of land to fight |
s | and that's what Albion is about uh I |
s | mean so sorry I have to accept it |
s | because that's that's a key point I |
s | think where we where we are also |
s | different from what a lot of other |
s | um |
s | people who are trying to do the same |
s | thing or who are doing the same thing |
s | um |
s | what we always try to do is we we try to |
s | think big we try to think in the in what |
s | would be the awesome thing |
s | but then it also has to work right |
s | um and and you can't just naively assume |
s | you know if you do something awesome |
s | it's just gonna work you you really have |
s | to think about upfront like |
s | how is this going to get used and I |
s | think that's something that we're very |
s | proud of with Albion is that |
s | um there's a lot of things that that |
s | could easily fail completely |
s | that we that we have managed to put into |
s | a place where it's you know constantly |
s | working |
s | um example is just the overall economy |
s | right it's it's uh it's not entirely |
s | trivial to build |
s | an economy that's that uh |
s | remains stable |
s | and and active for for such a long |
s | period of time |
s | yeah I'd have to say that the economy in |
s | Albion is one of the most unique in |
s | gaming period And I know that there are |
s | people who just play the economy in |
s | Albion whereas in other games it's such |
s | a a minor aspect of the MMO that it is |
s | generally an aside but Bogle plays just |
s | the economy that's his thing that he |
s | does in the game and he absolutely loves |
s | it to the extreme and there's so many |
s | people like him and it's not just they |
s | play the economy some of them will play |
s | the plots you know like the plot |
s | ownership and some of them will be uh |
s | the the laborers for example that's what |
s | they work on or just farming or |
s | gathering there's so many different |
s | interconnected pieces to the economy |
s | that it provides a gameplay type for so |
s | many different players than just the PVP |
s | oriented players and that was one of the |
s | things we are tremendously proud of that |
s | because if you watch our very very early |
s | announcement videos this is exactly what |
s | we're promising right we we may long |
s | before the game was playable for for a |
s | broader audience we made videos where we |
s | promised exactly that right you can be a |
s | Trader you can you can just play the |
s | economy you can just be a gatherer you |
s | don't have to PVP but you can etc etc so |
s | that the fact that this has worked is uh |
s | wow |
s | yeah and and largely also thanks to the |
s | players and everybody who participated |
s | in the alpha phases and in the beta |
s | phases and then who stuck with us |
s | through you know the the pay-to-play |
s | phase post launch and then |
s | after the free to play launch where you |
s | know these these weren't necessarily |
s | times where the game was always doing |
s | great in All Phases there were always |
s | issues with these with these things not |
s | like we we drew them up on paper |
s | um and put them there and everything |
s | which is work I mean |
s | um |
s | we went through so many iterations and I |
s | think that's also that's also a strength |
s | for at least we'd like to think though |
s | so that we that we are willing to |
s | revisit our Concepts and reiterate on |
s | the concepts to to keep refining |
s | um the systems and I know it's |
s | frustrating sometimes when when |
s | basically instead of some new awesome |
s | feature we go back to a feature to to |
s | put it into better place on the other |
s | hand I know there's a lot of people who |
s | actually prefer us to do that and who |
s | don't like when we put new content in |
s | but it's it's it what we actually |
s | observe is when when an update focuses |
s | on new content we get a lot of messages |
s | about all the old contents that are good |
s | and if we do an update where we focus on |
s | Old content there's a lot of messages |
s | saying where's the new stuff so you know |
s | in reality we have to balance those |
s | needs and that's one of the most |
s | challenging things honestly about this |
s | game is that |
s | the diversity of experience how how are |
s | you enjoying Albion online what is your |
s | Albion online |
s | that is so extremely hard to answer as a |
s | team of of you know just about 60 people |
s | out of which only really 40 are working |
s | on the game and and are kind of in the |
s | know the rest is working on on you know |
s | publishing side things and and |
s | working that closely with the game so |
s | there's you know how how with this |
s | relatively small number of people are |
s | you going to get an idea what the |
s | perspective |
s | is that everybody has because even if |
s | everybody in the team plays very |
s | actively Albion online they wouldn't |
s | even have the breadth of experience that |
s | is that is there right so |
s | um we can we can often understand when |
s | players in certain areas of gameplay |
s | feel left behind because of certain |
s | decisions just extremely hard to get |
s | behind what everybody's actually doing |
s | in the game when you compare it for |
s | example to I don't know League of |
s | Legends or something like that right |
s | where you have a |
s | already rather tight like really tight |
s | everybody's playing the same game right |
s | yeah everybody's doing the exact same |
s | thing they're going forward and they're |
s | splitting into Lanes |
s | foreign |
s | but uh yeah I wanted to touch a little |
s | bit on the the old versus new content |
s | because you guys just released an update |
s | Into The Fray that focuses largely on |
s | that Fresh coat of paint looking at |
s | older systems and making them better |
s | while still adding a bit of new to it |
s | and I feel it was really well received |
s | from the fans because so many people had |
s | been asking can you look at some of this |
s | old stuff can you do this and you know |
s | we kind of joke around |
s | in our office it is the fan service |
s | patch it's the the quality of life this |
s | is the one for the long term fans this |
s | is for the guys who've been here and |
s | asking for these updates forever and I |
s | can tell you the fans appreciate it they |
s | really do |
s | yeah glad to hear that the crystal |
s | reader also was something that we wanted |
s | to do for a while so I was happy that we |
s | could finally get it in |
s | and I would like to add a point to what |
s | Robin said this is iterative process |
s | that we have is a very big part of our |
s | philosophy and and I think what makes |
s | the game so strong is we are always |
s | trying to react to What The Players how |
s | they interact with our content right we |
s | have an idea we make a plan and then we |
s | launch it and then we we see how do you |
s | play it and then we need to react on it |
s | so we if players do things differently |
s | than we originally intended and we do |
s | not need to definitely block that we |
s | have to see okay what what are they |
s | doing does that cost problems would they |
s | like content to be more pushed into that |
s | direction and then there's kind of this |
s | back and force mentality that is uh very |
s | important I think for for our whole |
s | philosophy and that is also um |
s | part of our patches when we reiterate on |
s | older content and it's also very fun I |
s | think to to like refine things and and |
s | work keep working on them and see how |
s | pleasant they act with them and then |
s | making improvements that they enjoy this |
s | content more |
s | I think we're going to talk later a |
s | little bit about uh how how updates |
s | actually get made and planned and how |
s | how does all of that work because that's |
s | actually a pretty intriguing and complex |
s | process |
s | I I do want to talk about something that |
s | you guys changed and it was a philosophy |
s | change it was a huge change for the game |
s | when you went from 5v5 |
s | content for territorial control to zvz |
s | for territorial control with Queen it |
s | completely changed the way the game was |
s | played it changed uh philosophies in the |
s | game it changed who was getting the |
s | content do you want to go into that a |
s | little bit and what |
s | what kind of pushed you guys to do that |
s | was it a technology change where you |
s | suddenly had the technology to do it or |
s | was it just hey um |
s | 5v5 is stressful and nobody gets to do |
s | it maybe we should make it zvz |
s | actually actually there was a |
s | technological component there I don't |
s | know if David remembers yeah they're |
s | absolutely is the thing is that |
s | um |
s | you know if if this had been the |
s | original proposition of the game you |
s | know let's make a |
s | 350 400 people fight literally on the |
s | same screen I would have said you are |
s | freaking insane right that is never that |
s | is never gonna work you know show me the |
s | game that does that it's always a bad |
s | sign if there is no other game in the |
s | market that can do that right and then |
s | you're the one hey I'm gonna pull that |
s | off probably not |
s | um but |
s | um over time it turned out that we were |
s | doing relatively good in that uh in in |
s | that department right we we could |
s | actually support much larger larger |
s | fights than we thought |
s | and then of course Robin and his game |
s | design team started to push us in that |
s | direction and said look guys can we can |
s | we make that work better right uh this |
s | is really something that that the |
s | players are enjoying this is something |
s | that they want to do |
s | um what can we do to to technically |
s | improve that and there is no uh there is |
s | not a single you know technical decision |
s | that enabled that right there was not a |
s | really a breakthrough moment or anything |
s | it was a continuous process of of |
s | iteration right essentially we have the |
s | unfortunately we have the ability to |
s | simulate large fights in-house right |
s | we're talking about 400 people right we |
s | cannot have a play test with 400 people |
s | every now and then so we use Bots |
s | essentially in-house to simulate such |
s | fights and and to do measurements and so |
s | what we do is we examine very carefully |
s | where the bottlenecks are they are |
s | sometimes on the network side uh the |
s | network Hardware as a component the CPU |
s | is a component |
s | etc etc and then you have to you know |
s | you have to simulate you have to measure |
s | you have to identify the bottlenecks |
s | then you have to try and eliminate those |
s | bottlenecks and then you rinse and |
s | repeat |
s | and we're still doing that by the way to |
s | this day uh in in the last patch some of |
s | you guys have probably noticed uh we |
s | have released another important |
s | Improvement to these to these large |
s | fights we constantly have to right |
s | because we keep adding stuff to the game |
s | and and uh sometimes we make things |
s | worse |
s | and then we have to fix them again and |
s | optimize them again yeah if I remember |
s | correctly basically I mean I I you you |
s | gave me the credit for pushing for this |
s | but I actually remember the code team |
s | itself having the ambition to improve |
s | the large fight performance and heavily |
s | driving that process yeah because you |
s | got players to do it first right yeah |
s | what what usually happens at the office |
s | if you if you want to know the the real |
s | story here is that that we me and my |
s | team we get YouTube videos right of |
s | fights with lag and then people are like |
s | you know here's a video uh the |
s | performance isn't good this is lagging |
s | you need to fix that |
s | and and then we look at that and we're |
s | like this is really our game really this |
s | is what the game designers have done |
s | with it this is what you can do in it in |
s | the game |
s | um and and then we kind of have to fix |
s | it after the fact right so it's a player |
s | driven optimization right we first |
s | shipped the feature and then we we fix |
s | it afterwards yeah |
s | I can tell you that now I get a lot of |
s | video submissions of lag and I just pass |
s | it on through to QA we can talk about |
s | lag and then and and the associated |
s | challenges but later but but to get back |
s | to the decision about |
s | um large scale fights so I remember that |
s | basically the code team had pushed us |
s | forward in the performance of large |
s | fights to a point where we were |
s | comfortable or more comfortable with |
s | that decision |
s | and it was something that we debated for |
s | a very very long time because obviously |
s | or up to that point five versus five |
s | fights had been kind of one of the |
s | centerpieces of albions |
s | design |
s | um |
s | but eventually we we just realized that |
s | the structures that |
s | were being created |
s | from the these high-end fights were just |
s | unhealthy for the social |
s | uh structures that were being created in |
s | the game there were a lot of guilds that |
s | were just built around supporting a few |
s | players having these fights and |
s | everybody else having to support them |
s | and we noticed that that was making |
s | people quit a lot of a lot of people |
s | just didn't |
s | join into these guilds and then the |
s | other part was that guilds that were |
s | successful didn't really have a reason |
s | to invite new players to to show them |
s | the ropes and to and and to get them in |
s | so again |
s | you players would come to the game and |
s | they wouldn't find a place for |
s | themselves because the territories were |
s | all occupied and nobody wanted them in |
s | their group |
s | and I think opening this up to to |
s | large-scale territory Warfare was |
s | possibly the key decision that we made |
s | for Albion online because it changed the |
s | Dynamics that the guilds suddenly |
s | started to care about new players they |
s | suddenly started to care about involving |
s | everybody and and and and and you know |
s | build these social structures that |
s | actually encourage people to stay and |
s | not just exploit them from an economic |
s | perspective |
s | um so while we obviously we we really |
s | loved the competitive meta that existed |
s | in those fights and the the stories that |
s | were being created I mean you probably |
s | still remember some of the names from |
s | those days and we all remember them |
s | because we saw them so often but when a |
s | key part of your game is dominated by a |
s | few names |
s | then you know that you have a problem if |
s | you have an MMO right that is totally |
s | fine if you have a Esports game where |
s | you always notice the top end players |
s | that's what you want to have |
s | but in an MMO you want everybody to be |
s | able to participate and so we made that |
s | that was probably the most crucial |
s | Direction Change we've done for Albion |
s | online post launch |
s | um and it was also the moment that the |
s | game really started to take off |
s | with that change basically the |
s | population numbers started ironic |
s | ironically that was kind of a holy cow |
s | internally that we slaughtered in that |
s | moment right because that that 5v5 was |
s | literally in the very first draft of the |
s | game design it was one of the core |
s | pillars of the game |
s | and it sounded like a good idea because |
s | the the notion here was there's large |
s | guilds and there's small guilds and the |
s | larger guilds are always going to |
s | dominate the small goods are never going |
s | to have a chance and so we're gonna |
s | level the battlefields by making it |
s | about 5v5 combat right and that sounded |
s | like a very reasonable idea |
s | uh at a lot of team members |
s | um |
s | a little clung to that idea right until |
s | Robin ran the numbers and said look I I |
s | can show you that it's literally a |
s | thousand players who are you know |
s | thousands out of hundreds of thousands |
s | who are playing these 5v5 battles and |
s | everybody else is left out |
s | I was recording those matches and while |
s | there might have been thousands of |
s | characters who participated that was |
s | because several players had dozens of |
s | players and alts that they had made so |
s | that they can be in multiple areas at |
s | once and at one point it felt like you |
s | guys were playing catch-up like gameplay |
s | design wise to stop them from doing that |
s | yeah yeah yeah I mean that's the other |
s | thing the the gpg system just kept |
s | growing in complexity to deal with all |
s | the potential |
s | ways that our lovely |
s | um competitive players like to like to |
s | push systems to the to the edge |
s | um so we had to deal with like so many |
s | situations that were being perceived as |
s | unfair or as exploited just was very |
s | very complex at that point already and |
s | that was another hurdle for people to |
s | get in right because it was just so hard |
s | to understand the logic of launching |
s | attacks and then |
s | counter attacks and I can't even |
s | remember retaliation attacks yeah all |
s | the stuff that we had |
s | high exam to the territory and we had |
s | all we actually had that as a board game |
s | right like we had that as a paper |
s | prototype board game where we would be |
s | like okay if these guys attack and then |
s | these guys are attacking from here and |
s | they they're launching in this time zone |
s | and they have you have to play that out |
s | on on a paper prototype to actually |
s | instead of always ideas they always |
s | found another way to to circumvent |
s | whatever we put in there but I remember |
s | this was quite a big discussion |
s | internally it was uh that was like kind |
s | of like a crossroad do we keep the |
s | system or do we ditch it and it was |
s | quite a big leap to take because like |
s | like also David mentioned we built a lot |
s | around that fantasy that those five guys |
s | can defend the territory and there was |
s | like this crossover like can we fix the |
s | system maybe we have to improve it and |
s | we built like the combat around it and |
s | always about this fantasy uh but |
s | changing it like Robin said was a very |
s | good decision but it took a bit of |
s | Facebook and so we weren't sure because |
s | the meta and the whole game has been |
s | evolving around it and was quite drastic |
s | shift also technologically uh can we |
s | handle actually these huge fights all |
s | the time |
s | I think one thing I gotta ask you retro |
s | man talking about these large-scale |
s | fights uh the introduction obviously |
s | um outside moving from 5v5s to actual |
s | foe scale 350 plus battles one thing |
s | that had to come in was the cluster |
s | queue system oh yeah how |
s | hard was it and how difficult was it you |
s | know to build and think about that whole |
s | system because a lot of players right |
s | now don't actually remember or weren't |
s | actually playing back then I was I |
s | remember massing up three hours before a |
s | territory battle just to fill the zone |
s | so if you can give us a little bit of |
s | insight into the cluster queue system uh |
s | sure yeah so the classic queue so first |
s | why we did that even is there was a |
s | problem that we need a limit how many |
s | players can be in a cluster in a Zone in |
s | the game right that was back then I |
s | think it was 300 players |
s | and um |
s | what happened is if we had a super high |
s | value objective like castles even back |
s | then if there was a huge dispute or a |
s | huge fight between large armies uh one |
s | would just go in two hours early and |
s | block it completely with 300 players and |
s | then you couldn't end and that was how |
s | you could decide fighter that was |
s | something if you if you remove the 5v5 |
s | uh fighting about territories then we |
s | need to solve that then we need to have |
s | a way to resolve fights where you could |
s | even bring a thousand players they |
s | needed there need be a way to do that |
s | and we have actually been uh discussing |
s | different concepts for this |
s | um one idea what my favorite was the one |
s | where players get stumped by a giant |
s | finger yeah there's too many of them |
s | yeah I remember that actually |
s | no and the other was um one idea was we |
s | had would create a copy of the cluster |
s | so you you have 300 players here and if |
s | you exceed the maximum we would try to |
s | copy players down into like a shadow |
s | realm I kinda imagine like stranger |
s | things upside down world it's like |
s | Shadow version and then people could get |
s | teleported would be teleported down |
s | there and keep fighting and then get |
s | teleported up there which sounds cool at |
s | the beginning but when you think through |
s | all the problems that educated it |
s | becomes very convoluted and |
s | also technically more challenging and |
s | also absolutely scrapped it and uh turns |
s | the whole mechanism of choosing players |
s | to send down instead of sending them |
s | down in this layer sends them to the |
s | exits that's how they cluster queue was |
s | developed and actually it was uh quite |
s | an uh challenging feature uh with all |
s | the edge cases and I had to work closely |
s | together with David on it and even now |
s | if you have to make an adjustment we all |
s | have to look up all the details again |
s | because there's a lot of edge cases and |
s | timing issues when you collect the |
s | players for this the item power how do |
s | you organize them where do you send them |
s | and what's actually quite a challenging |
s | feature |
s | but something we had today I think |
s | overall I can't totally see why it's not |
s | an exciting features uh for players |
s | because this is just to prevent a |
s | problem and but I think that we added it |
s | was a massive was one of the key things |
s | we needed to do to make the territory |
s | Warfare uh open to get rid of this 5v5 |
s | com so it was a crucial feature for that |
s | therefore I think I'm very glad that we |
s | did it and that was also |
s | one of those crazy features they say we |
s | don't do it like other games we do it |
s | like the Albion where we create |
s | something completely new that no one |
s | does |
s | and find the solution for something that |
s | didn't have a solution so far |
s | and those Solutions did work as you were |
s | saying before the zvz for territory |
s | control is one of those things that led |
s | to the success of Albion online that you |
s | guys are enjoying today |
s | did you guys ever expect this kind of |
s | success when you were dealing with the |
s | launch of the game and some of those |
s | hard days in the early periods did you |
s | ever expect that it would turn into this |
s | but we were hoping for that of course |
s | um if you ask about the very early days |
s | the truth is that when we started that |
s | project |
s | um |
s | we completely agreed also with our |
s | investors that first of all a video game |
s | is not uh is not the best investment for |
s | money |
s | and uh |
s | that we would probably have a 20 chance |
s | of success and back then I thought that |
s | was even very optimistic |
s | so yeah of course that's what you aim |
s | for right when you build a game you aim |
s | for that success but believing |
s | um I don't know believing is a big word |
s | there were certainly times when I |
s | thought we would fail |
s | right there were there were Dark Days |
s | okay there were the occasional like this |
s | I mean I told you already at the |
s | beginning that I uh |
s | um |
s | I I thought the project was crazy when I |
s | joined right I didn't I didn't join |
s | really because I thought that this had |
s | such a great chance of success |
s | I joined because I thought it was crazy |
s | enough to try |
s | and |
s | that you know you don't you don't get |
s | the chance to to work on a game like |
s | this twice |
s | your life so uh you know that was that |
s | was the primary motivation for for |
s | trying to see if we can make it work and |
s | doing our best to make it work but I and |
s | and obviously you you always work with |
s | the expectation or or with the |
s | looking for Success you're not you're |
s | not going to start something where you |
s | think there is no chance right but um I |
s | certainly did not |
s | see us you know surpass uh 35 000 |
s | concurrent players |
s | in in in in the game world like that |
s | wasn't something I was thinking about |
s | back back in those days we were like we |
s | were thinking about much smaller |
s | numbers |
s | it really started as a niche product and |
s | has grown in accessibility and and reach |
s | over the years and I think a lot of that |
s | is some of those special choices that |
s | you guys made the ways that you took a |
s | different path rather than the path to |
s | other game companies were making like |
s | you said nobody else has a game where |
s | you can play uh 150 versus 150 in a |
s | single zone uh there's no other game |
s | where you can play 100 versus 100 versus |
s | 100 and it truly makes for an absolutely |
s | unique game that I think really has |
s | surpassed expectations it's for me |
s | personally I never expected it to get |
s | this big |
s | um you know I thought it was going to be |
s | a niche game for me and my friends but |
s | now |
s | people I've been stopped on the street |
s | like it's kind of weird you know it's |
s | it's really cool well I I have never |
s | it's a bit of give and take um and you |
s | know it's on the street in front of the |
s | convention center where there's a bunch |
s | of people playing video games so you |
s | know it's it's not at the grocery store |
s | nobody came up to me with their grocery |
s | cart you know full of a a computer going |
s | hey do you play this game too yeah |
s | but uh |
s | like I said it's unexpected |
s | um what other unexpected things have |
s | happened what have you seen that players |
s | have done that was truly unexpected that |
s | you weren't |
s | you saw that and you're like what the |
s | why this this uncountable things like |
s | that I I wanna I wanna share one |
s | anecdote before we tell this story |
s | because I think one thing that few |
s | players realize is that I I talked |
s | earlier about how difficult it is to see |
s | how players are playing the game and you |
s | know not everybody in the team |
s | is into the game or or understands the |
s | game on the same level right like we |
s | have people who are super into the |
s | hardcore PVP aspect we have people who |
s | are super into the economy we have |
s | people who are just superficially |
s | playing a little bit of we have every |
s | every kind of style of play at the |
s | office |
s | so that we what we try to do is to have |
s | in every room one big screen where the |
s | game is running and where we follow a |
s | random player that is currently playing |
s | the game live |
s | for a period of about 30 seconds before |
s | we switch to the next player so we |
s | effectively kind of just observe what |
s | are people currently doing in the game |
s | and this has been one of the most |
s | exciting ways of seeing crazy stuff |
s | happening because that mode takes you |
s | all over the game right like it takes |
s | you to it takes you to Hell Gates it |
s | takes you to |
s | the roads hideouts everywhere so you see |
s | and and and and player islands is one of |
s | the yeah |
s | what do people do in the privacy of |
s | their Islands you don't want to know |
s | yeah |
s | nobody wants to end up there |
s | accidentally |
s | call that thing the stock mode by the |
s | way |
s | and and it is it is a really cool way |
s | for us to get an impression what are |
s | people actually doing in the game |
s | because obviously because it's a random |
s | selection of a player |
s | it's kind of statistically represents |
s | things that people are doing often |
s | frequently on those screens and things |
s | that are happening rarely rarely and |
s | people in the office working they just |
s | kind of see that on the side and they're |
s | always aware of what's going on in this |
s | world and I'll I'll tell you now if |
s | you're trying to |
s | do weird stuff in the game that might |
s | not be |
s | within the term within the license |
s | agreement or the terms of the game |
s | we have spotted more than one person |
s | doing weird stuff with this with the |
s | system and it has led to game exclusions |
s | uh uh seeing what people have done there |
s | so uh it's a there's |
s | it's a really cool way of seeing what |
s | people are doing and keep kind of |
s | keeping things in check in on top of |
s | everything else that we have right |
s | um because it's just yeah you you see |
s | you see for example how people are |
s | standing in in a dungeon and and |
s | you know treating a mob that you'd you |
s | spent hours and days lovingly treating |
s | the tweaking the values of this mob and |
s | thinking about how players are going to |
s | play it and then you see them standing |
s | in a corner exploiting a collision issue |
s | to to uh to not get hit by the attacks |
s | that use a lot so lovingly designed so |
s | um |
s | yeah so for me it's like the these |
s | moments that we witness on there uh were |
s | probably among some of the most |
s | surprising stuff I mean stuff like for |
s | example a guilds gathering on Guild |
s | Islands if you're not part of a of a |
s | guild yourself that has the sort of |
s | scale of people you as a developer would |
s | never see that moment of the game you |
s | would never know that those places are |
s | being used for staging large Guild |
s | operations for example |
s | but in that way we do and that's cool |
s | absolutely yeah but ads I think except |
s | from all these kind of exploits and how |
s | they try to game our systems that's |
s | often surprising but kinda expected a |
s | few other cool details where when they |
s | tried when they did a soccer game with |
s | rabbits on an island just with |
s | knockbacks that was a very cool and |
s | creative idea when I saw that about |
s | something oh wow that's that's |
s | interesting |
s | another cool thing was the Albion Museum |
s | that was really surprising that actually |
s | was a really cool moment for us too as |
s | developers and we said oh wow players |
s | were actually built this that is cool |
s | there's a lot of little neat things out |
s | there and I'm always surprised by what I |
s | run into whether it's little |
s | celebrations on Islands or |
s | um we'll often bounce around like you |
s | said on the world tour there and during |
s | the the war reports you know I'm |
s | generally trying to find battles but |
s | sometimes we'll get sent over to |
s | something else and I'll get sent over to |
s | a random group of 30 people standing in |
s | a shape using their spells to make art |
s | or some nonsense like that why why you |
s | didn't know I was coming you didn't know |
s | this was going to be on TV what are you |
s | doing yeah I think a recent rave party I |
s | saw on on what was it |
s | yeah that was pretty cool too that was |
s | really awesome to see I love seeing like |
s | that's when Albion spills out of the |
s | game into the game outside the game and |
s | that community that you guys have built |
s | gets to continue on and do something |
s | else and I feel like that's the the most |
s | special thing that we get out of working |
s | in MMOs is that the fact that you're |
s | really building a community not just a |
s | game okay other people build games that |
s | people play Maybe with their own friends |
s | but when you build an MMO you're |
s | building a community where people are |
s | going to get thrown in together and meet |
s | new people and make lifelong |
s | relationships with people from all the |
s | way around the world and it's really |
s | cool that you guys have managed to pull |
s | that off |
s | it's uh it's actually the work is never |
s | done thank you |
s | thank you for being here um on that same |
s | vein of like things that surprised you |
s | what was the biggest oh crap moment you |
s | guys had when working on this game where |
s | things went completely wrong and you |
s | were like I'm not coming into work |
s | tomorrow |
s | but with that that's never happened okay |
s | because normally when you have such a |
s | moment you know that you're not leaving |
s | work until it's fixed it's gonna be a |
s | long time and the next day you have to |
s | deal with whatever Fallout you couldn't |
s | deal with on that day |
s | so so there's no exemption to to come |
s | back to work if you screwed up no what I |
s | guess what you're looking for is uh I I |
s | had a number of heart attacks |
s | um on on this obviously because I'm |
s | working with the technology right and |
s | that that's all Robin doesn't want me to |
s | tell these stories because we need to |
s | appear to be in control all the time but |
s | the truth is that there are these oh |
s | crap moments right there was this one |
s | occasion and I believe it was doing |
s | better but I'm not sure |
s | um but I was at home and I was |
s | experimenting with the uh with it with a |
s | database set up essentially and |
s | um my intention was to run a test on my |
s | local machine |
s | but I had misconfigured something |
s | and my local database uh connected to |
s | the live database of the game and |
s | essentially took down the game and the |
s | process and everybody was offline and |
s | and and and then my phone started |
s | ringing and someone was there with the |
s | game it's down and have a board and then |
s | I realized oh crap that was me I I I did |
s | that and |
s | um |
s | uh there were even situations I don't |
s | want to go into details about even |
s | situations where I thought I had just |
s | killed the database fortunately that has |
s | never really happened but there were |
s | those you know those brief moments when |
s | you thought you might have just killed a |
s | multi-million dollar game I I want to |
s | reassure all players here that the daily |
s | maintenance process is there to ensure |
s | there's always live backups that that |
s | are in place in case anything like that |
s | ever actually the question was about my |
s | heart attacks and those are very real |
s | right backups are not |
s | I can only imagine I I messed up an |
s | interview before and uh Gone wait I |
s | didn't record that half an hour |
s | interview I can't imagine you know the |
s | exponentially greater oh God I just |
s | deleted six months of work uh how do I |
s | fix that that's the kind of thing like |
s | my wife for instance she's an event |
s | manager and she always tells me you know |
s | about her 500 people parties and all the |
s | stuff that goes wrong and then I'm |
s | always like you know what I just kicked |
s | 30 000 people out and then now waiting |
s | in front of the venue and they want to |
s | get back in but they can't get back in |
s | until I fix this thing here right that |
s | is my life |
s | yeah and you have to you have to build a |
s | fix you have to verify it while |
s | everybody is waiting and everybody you |
s | know you're very aware that everybody's |
s | waiting yeah 30 000 people you get used |
s | to it actually right the first time it's |
s | kind of strange |
s | yeah I I a few messages you know you |
s | know it's it's |
s | operating a a single server game which |
s | is necessary to well single I say single |
s | server obviously from a technology point |
s | it's a lot of computers involved but |
s | it's all one connected cluster of |
s | computers that are operating in unison |
s | to create this one World |
s | um |
s | is much more challenging to keep that in |
s | a in a good State I think than than if |
s | you have a match-based game for example |
s | I mean I don't want to you know |
s | match page based games have all their |
s | own challenges but like in particular |
s | keeping that one server uh in a good |
s | State all the time when you have things |
s | like Hardware failures you have network |
s | issues that obviously are not in in your |
s | control and on top of that you're |
s | constantly updating |
s | this thing there's there's a lot of |
s | things that can go wrong and and some of |
s | them are within your control and some of |
s | them really are not like we get a lot of |
s | complaints for for bad internet latency |
s | issues and some of that is is obviously |
s | due to the server location having to be |
s | in in one place and and we we had to |
s | make a decision about like what is the |
s | best place for all of our players where |
s | we can put this |
s | um |
s | but there's also a lot where there's |
s | just issues on the internet and and and |
s | and and we have to uh we're being asked |
s | to to deal with those issues and |
s | sometimes we can sometimes we can we can |
s | put pressure on providers to to look |
s | into certain issues certain routing |
s | problems or whatever but it's you know |
s | in the end |
s | we don't have our own internet right |
s | we're sharing this with everybody else |
s | um |
s | yeah um I think I think I mean the |
s | biggest the biggest oh crap moment for |
s | us |
s | was was post-launch to be honest I mean |
s | this was this was heartbreaking because |
s | we'd worked towards the launch so very |
s | hard and then |
s | we were hit by a number of issues the |
s | first one we were responsible for to be |
s | honest we we had in very good faith |
s | um upgraded the hardware |
s | um for the servers specifically for |
s | launch because we really wanted the game |
s | to do well at launch |
s | but unfortunately |
s | there was a I think it was a multi-cpu |
s | issue on with a database |
s | yeah back then it was a very strange |
s | thing with a rate controller of that |
s | particular database machine not giving |
s | the database the performance it needed |
s | it was a very very obscure issue and in |
s | the end we only figured it out with the |
s | help of of of a real expert which which |
s | we basically hired a consultant for that |
s | type of database and he then figured out |
s | that there's an issue with a rate |
s | controller in that particular model of |
s | computer blah blah blah |
s | exactly |
s | and and this was purely a result of us |
s | actually have wanting to upgrade the |
s | hardware to make things better right but |
s | then the second issue that hit us hard |
s | obviously were the the denial of service |
s | attacks post-launch and and there we |
s | have to admit that you know we like like |
s | David said originally we're not a team |
s | of Veteran MMO developers we didn't come |
s | from the the big MMOs back in the day |
s | but you know this is this is we've been |
s | doing it for a very long time now but it |
s | was our first MMO and we learned a lot |
s | about DDOS protection |
s | um but unfortunately obviously the first |
s | weeks after launch were just a very |
s | terrible experience for the players |
s | because so the the frequent disruptions |
s | [Music] |
s | um |
s | but from a from a team perspective those |
s | were nightmare days because because we |
s | were working you know whenever we were |
s | awake we were trying to work on this and |
s | we had this exact thing where what David |
s | was saying with with 30 000 people |
s | wanting to get in and not being able to |
s | and you're trying to to deal with the |
s | issue and really a lot of it is very |
s | much out of your control |
s | because you're relying on working with |
s | hosting partners |
s | can move at their speed |
s | and uh yeah we had we had a bunch of |
s | very terrible weeks |
s | um you know where where you also have to |
s | deal with with people claiming that |
s | you're somehow falsely claiming that |
s | it's a DDOS attack that you just didn't |
s | prepare for the servers or whatever uh |
s | and and and you know that that was that |
s | was probably the most heartbreaking and |
s | oh crap moment for uh for the for the |
s | players it's all the same of course |
s | right they can't play the game right |
s | they don't care whether it's a hardware |
s | issue whether it's uh an issue with |
s | their internet provider whether it's a |
s | DDOS attack or whatever right it is it |
s | is obviously the developer's fault and I |
s | can't really blame them right because |
s | from their perspective they just they |
s | just just want to play the game and |
s | like the player said for some of them |
s | had been waiting almost three years at |
s | that point to play your game they had |
s | been actively involved in the testing |
s | everybody's showing up to Beta like you |
s | said you watched over and over again on |
s | those beta releases that those those |
s | little nodes where the people would |
s | spawn it would just fill up and then |
s | they spread out into every direction you |
s | saw that so many times and release |
s | people were making you know I hate to |
s | bring it up but that 27-page document to |
s | prepare for release so that your guild |
s | could get an advantage I see some |
s | smiling faces on there everybody had a |
s | guild like that I see yeah we all |
s | prepared and then it was so rough and a |
s | lot of players don't realize how rough |
s | for you guys it is because it was your |
s | baby it was the thing you've been |
s | working on forever at that point David |
s | had been working on for five years |
s | getting ready for that date to make this |
s | game work and then everything that could |
s | go wrong did go wrong and then somehow |
s | within I would say about two years you |
s | guys had really started to turn it |
s | around and let's talk a little bit about |
s | that what were some of the most fun uh |
s | challenging things that happened that |
s | weren't awful something that happened |
s | that you were like this is tough but |
s | it's great to work on and I love the |
s | outcome of what we've done |
s | oh there are a lot of systems that uh |
s | that I'm I'm really proud of |
s | for instance one of the one of the areas |
s | I'm mainly responsible for is the whole |
s | um combat and and spell uh system right |
s | that is mostly my design and and a lot |
s | of it is my code |
s | and I am always impressed when I when I |
s | when I see what the game designers are |
s | doing with that right because I work |
s | with toy examples as a programmer right |
s | they asked me to do this feature and |
s | that feature and then I I deliver that |
s | and I deliver some toy examples uh and |
s | then in the end I usually on on that |
s | screen in the office I see some boss |
s | fight and I'm like |
s | how did they even do that you know is |
s | that is that my system |
s | um but but it's really fun it's it's |
s | really cool to see that what what what |
s | is possible and and how you can |
s | creatively use these systems to build |
s | such a huge variety of of abilities and |
s | bosses and and stuff |
s | yeah working on the combat is definitely |
s | also the most fun and every time you get |
s | a new toy from you David then it's super |
s | exciting for us like oh what can we do |
s | with this can we like when we got |
s | multi-spad so that you can change the |
s | spell but what can we do with it or we |
s | can create this mimic ability where you |
s | can maybe mimic someone because we have |
s | another feature where we can already ask |
s | for the web someone is wearing and then |
s | you kind of try to experiment and that |
s | is a lot of fun and always exciting to |
s | work with these systems when we get |
s | something |
s | and another thing that I personally |
s | enjoyed really working on recently |
s | probably the introduction of War gloves |
s | was a lot of fun because creating a new |
s | webline from scratch was like kind of |
s | like in the old bet Affairs where you |
s | start on designing everything from |
s | scratch was pretty fun Crystal Arena |
s | recently was really a lot of fun because |
s | it was also a nice change of pace we had |
s | this existing gameplay that proved to be |
s | uh quite good uh the long run already |
s | but then the whole range system on top |
s | and and how do we try to match plays and |
s | we have a patch where we approve this by |
s | the way there are a few issues with us |
s | right now but that was really a lot of |
s | fun because it was a change of pace to |
s | work on something completely different |
s | it was its own challenges and |
s | that's probably what from my side and |
s | recent times I did I I think my man my |
s | answer to the question is it's just all |
s | very enjoyable I think otherwise we |
s | wouldn't have made it this far I I mean |
s | there are certainly things that I that I |
s | don't enjoy that much about about the |
s | work |
s | um but every time I get to work on the |
s | game itself |
s | or we get to drive the direction for a |
s | feature or do something creatively like |
s | last year I was heavily involved in the |
s | in the music extension right like I did |
s | most of the direction |
s | uh sort of high-level game direction for |
s | the soundtrack that was being produced |
s | for the cities |
s | um you know these things are |
s | brilliant uh working working to to |
s | improve the game I love if I have the |
s | opportunity I love sitting down with a |
s | feature and doing the balancing and like |
s | going really in depth with the with the |
s | economics or the Rewards or whatever |
s | building massive Excel sheets to do |
s | calculations whenever I get to do that |
s | that's great unfortunately there's not a |
s | whole lot of that that I still get to do |
s | these days |
s | um |
s | I I even even late time Emergency |
s | Operations when you you know there's an |
s | issue you have to |
s | either either the game went down because |
s | of a technical issue or there is some |
s | kind of uh situation being reported that |
s | you have to deal with immediately if |
s | you're enjoying that why there's no |
s | there is because I get get |
s | post-traumatic stress syndrome from that |
s | now I I do I do too but but also there |
s | is a there is a big satisfaction going |
s | to bed knowing that you saved the game |
s | one more day and you know you're |
s | everything's good again usually it |
s | starts with getting out of the bed in |
s | the middle of the night right that is |
s | also the reality of of game development |
s | and wasn't it one of your ex bosses who |
s | said like uh uh an online game is very |
s | much like a farm right when you get up |
s | the first thing is you you check the |
s | animals and the last thing before you go |
s | to bed is you check the animals and then |
s | and an online game is very much like |
s | that right |
s | yeah bowl of animals |
s | whoa |
s | anybody checked on quick swipe lately |
s | oh one of the animals of Albion who used |
s | to constantly do the edge case he was |
s | always coming up with different things |
s | that you guys would have to fix and I I |
s | can think of at least three different |
s | occasions where something he did |
s | resulted in the breaking of a system and |
s | you guys had to fix it last minute |
s | and we should constantly stalk that guy |
s | on on some screen |
s | yeah I remember one time where he made |
s | that literally impossible because what |
s | he was doing at one point is he was |
s | standing around boss mobs logging out |
s | waiting for other people to come fight |
s | that overly powered boss waiting them |
s | for them to get knocked down re-logging |
s | into the game and murdering those guys |
s | and I remember Michael had to to take |
s | care of that at the time and it's just |
s | like what is this guy doing I personally |
s | love it when people get creative right |
s | that that that other time there was this |
s | exploit the game designers called it |
s | right where where people uh committed |
s | suicide in front of the invisibility |
s | Shrine you know hoping that some poor |
s | poor fool would try to loot the body and |
s | thereby you know give up the |
s | invisibility buff so I thought that was |
s | terribly creative and very very clever |
s | and every time that happens the game |
s | designers March in and are like you know |
s | we need to fix it I'm like fix what that |
s | is so clever |
s | if David if David had his way I am a |
s | terrible game designer |
s | every every every bad thing players find |
s | would still be in the game I remember |
s | that weekend vividly and I was like it's |
s | just the layers please like let them |
s | click the shrine instead of this bag it |
s | was a rough day rough day that's what |
s | happens when you push things on Friday |
s | um let's talk about some of the other |
s | things that you guys have done to |
s | increase the success of the game you've |
s | brought the uh the game to a number of |
s | new audiences throughout the years first |
s | there was the the steam launch |
s | um then we had free to play the extended |
s | language support and most recently the |
s | mobile launch do you guys have any |
s | future plans to expand the the reach of |
s | Albion online yeah I was wondering when |
s | we're going to get to the present and |
s | the future |
s | um well I I there's it's it's very very |
s | difficult coming from that you know we |
s | we announced the game with a mobile |
s | version and then it took us |
s | eight years |
s | to deliver on that mobile version to to |
s | go out and make any kind of promises I |
s | all I can say at the moment is that yes |
s | we are definitely looking to |
s | expand the reach of Albion online even |
s | further and that Inc that includes |
s | potentially other platforms as well |
s | um but that's not a not a heavy focus at |
s | the moment |
s | um but it's also not something that |
s | we're completely ignoring so you might |
s | have noticed that we've we did a steam |
s | deck compatibility |
s | [Music] |
s | um |
s | there's a beta version of a controller |
s | support for Albion online now in the |
s | game |
s | um that we are very lucky to have one |
s | person that is just very very dedicated |
s | when it comes to the control |
s | uh scheme topics so this this isn't a |
s | huge drain of resources on the team it's |
s | you know one person dedicating their |
s | time to doing these things |
s | um but it obviously pushes us into a |
s | position where we can see you know how |
s | well does this work |
s | what could we be doing with it in the |
s | future |
s | believe it at that yeah okay okay so |
s | what you're saying is people should go |
s | out and make sure that they help beta |
s | test those controller support absolutely |
s | yeah we we love uh you know if you are a |
s | person that |
s | grew up with a game controller I'm not I |
s | I wasn't allowed a console in my |
s | household as a kid |
s | um |
s | my dad was a PC person uh but you know |
s | if if you grow up on a console and |
s | that's where you originally come from go |
s | check out the controller support for for |
s | Albion |
s | it also works on mobile by the way right |
s | there's those um controllers that you |
s | can attach to your phone |
s | and that may actually be a very |
s | enjoyable way uh to play because the |
s | phone screen is still very small and |
s | touch is difficult but you can play that |
s | within with the controller on your phone |
s | it's really great |
s | I've definitely tested out the |
s | controller support quite a bit I really |
s | love the movement it feels very relaxed |
s | and instead of playing like this you're |
s | playing like this which leads to a |
s | completely different way to interact |
s | with your game it kind of removes some |
s | of this the stressful anticipation and I |
s | like that I will never understand you |
s | people but yeah |
s | so uh you guys ever worked many of the |
s | the systems in the game so far we talked |
s | about that briefly and how you know it's |
s | hard to balance reworking old systems |
s | with bringing new systems into the game |
s | are there any other old systems that you |
s | guys have not reworked yet that you'd |
s | like to see get a Fresh coat of paint |
s | Mr first maybe yeah |
s | um |
s | yeah there are a couple I'm thinking of |
s | which one suit to take the first one is |
s | the the word bosses actually is uh |
s | something like the home basis that we |
s | call internally but this is the Earth's |
s | mother and the demon Prince is something |
s | that we would like to overhaul more also |
s | of course islands is always a topic that |
s | we have on the mind |
s | um I think in into the frame we take out |
s | a few of the things that we wanted to do |
s | for a while it was a crystal Arena and |
s | the castle oats in a smaller scale we |
s | didn't went crazy in scope but we made a |
s | nice modernization of that feature |
s | um |
s | I mean I'm not sure everybody's aware of |
s | what what we're doing right now because |
s | we haven't actually managed to put out a |
s | roadmap Dev talk yet unfortunately |
s | because I by the way maybe if you're |
s | watching and wondering why is everybody |
s | sitting at home rather than our lovely |
s | Studio I finally after two years caught |
s | The Big C |
s | uh and have been out with a covert |
s | infection |
s | um |
s | thoughts that that's why we haven't been |
s | able to put out a roadmap video yet |
s | unfortunately |
s | um but obviously we're working on what |
s | we announced in the last roadmap video |
s | which is the the rework of the roads of |
s | Avalon |
s | um the introduction of The Mists as a |
s | new way of of playing Albion online in a |
s | open world environment but with a |
s | guarantee not to get killed by large |
s | groups of players outnumbering you |
s | because you will only be able to go in |
s | there uh on your own but you will be |
s | able to play an open world style |
s | experience |
s | um and and other features associated |
s | with that so we're we're currently |
s | um |
s | the biggest rework that's coming I guess |
s | is the roads of Avalon which a lot of |
s | people have been asking for |
s | um and then you know while we're working |
s | on one big update already in the back of |
s | our minds obviously we're starting to |
s | shape up what's going to be the next |
s | thing and like like was just mentioned |
s | the the player islands are certainly |
s | something that we're thinking about a |
s | lot because those haven't really changed |
s | since launch and |
s | um there's we feel they're way below the |
s | potential of what they could be |
s | um |
s | there's a |
s | there's a |
s | another actually thing that we are |
s | working on right now is improving the |
s | whole way that people get into guilds |
s | um recruitment better recruitment option |
s | for guilds |
s | um and |
s | I think basically with with Islands in |
s | mind I'm also thinking a lot about the |
s | economic |
s | side of that and and how |
s | yeah how we can expand expand on on uh |
s | on what we have in terms of economy but |
s | also improve |
s | um some of the existing economic groups |
s | balance there's a lot a lot of of things |
s | we're thinking about there right now |
s | um and then there's a huge |
s | list of of |
s | um |
s | things that are kind of in between a |
s | rework and a new feature |
s | um that obviously we want to get around |
s | to someday you know territories |
s | is certainly a thing that we have we |
s | hadn't even considered for this update |
s | to make a pretty major change to the |
s | territories |
s | um |
s | there's |
s | certainly going to be you know uh uh |
s | looks taken at that maybe a little bit |
s | generally how do we approach how do we |
s | approach uh uh |
s | kind of finding what we're doing right |
s | because because with Albion it's not |
s | like we have a 10-year master plan that |
s | says like we're doing this then we're |
s | doing this then we're doing this then |
s | we're doing this |
s | the reason why we don't have that is |
s | because it makes no sense to even build |
s | that plan it would never survive the |
s | first half year of its existence because |
s | we try to react a lot to how the players |
s | are actually playing the game |
s | okay and that means a lot of the |
s | decisions we make in the in the midterm |
s | are influenced by player feedback we |
s | have things like our forums we read |
s | Reddit we have all the stuff that you |
s | send us we have the round table there's |
s | a lot of sources of input |
s | um oftentimes you know I on Twitter if |
s | somebody brings something up to me I'll |
s | I'll engage them on it and and and ask |
s | them can you explain this a little bit |
s | more and then you know that goes into a |
s | pile of feedback and and gets shaped |
s | into the decision making process for new |
s | updates and there's always a combination |
s | of like pulling from the stuff that we |
s | would like to do and the goals that we |
s | have |
s | and then the stuff that the player base |
s | brings to us |
s | and then we have to consider other |
s | things like production capabilities |
s | seasonal timings like for example with |
s | this last update |
s | we wanted to focus on things that were |
s | that had to be launched in the off |
s | season |
s | so that with the update afterwards we |
s | would be focusing on things that can be |
s | introduced in the middle of a season |
s | because it doesn't impact the season so |
s | much so that we're more free in choosing |
s | a launch date right so there's a lot of |
s | things to be considered when planning an |
s | update |
s | um |
s | and that also shapes what kind of |
s | reworks we we end up tackling like you |
s | know sometimes we might |
s | work on a feature not because it's |
s | necessarily the number one thing that we |
s | need to do right now but but because we |
s | have the opportunity in terms of Team |
s | resources or in terms of timing for an |
s | update |
s | and oftentimes you will see those things |
s | in the convenience features that we're |
s | introducing right like in this update |
s | for example there were a lot of smaller |
s | convenience things being introduced that |
s | you know maybe aren't the number one |
s | thing that everybody needs but when you |
s | have the chance to do those so |
s | sorry very long answer for a simple |
s | question well you've answered answer his |
s | question Robin actually |
s | but the answer on the rework is |
s | basically everything in Albion is always |
s | up for a rework when there is an |
s | opportunity |
s | go ahead I definitely think like Islands |
s | islands is one of the big ones that I |
s | wanna I wanna tackle and also |
s | yeah how do people actually make this |
s | process from starting out as a person |
s | that knows nothing about Albion online |
s | into a high-end end game |
s | uh you know player participating in |
s | large scale PVP or competitive crystal |
s | league or whatever your high your end |
s | game might be in Albion online |
s | um |
s | how can we how how can we shape that |
s | journey in a in a better way and then |
s | obviously of course how do we keep the |
s | end game interesting whatever your end |
s | game is right |
s | there are so many different end games |
s | and I'll be online that it's not |
s | possible to address every single one and |
s | every update we try to you know squeeze |
s | stuff for everyone in the update but for |
s | example I've just given a reason why |
s | it's not always possible to address |
s | something in the seasons because you |
s | can't really if your update is scheduled |
s | for |
s | in the middle of the season it's tough |
s | to launch anything that affects the |
s | season there's a lot of factors like |
s | that that have to be taken into account |
s | when actually planning |
s | the updates so you probably have a set |
s | of principles that you have in place for |
s | when you're doing updates this is what |
s | it can't affect like we don't want to |
s | affect the seasonal competition we don't |
s | want to affect the crystal league for |
s | example all those things have to be Con |
s | in consideration when you're doing a |
s | long-term planning how far out do you |
s | actually plan the advancement of Albion |
s | online because you said you don't have |
s | like a 10-year plan and that would be |
s | impossible but it sounds like you have |
s | plans for for well into the next year |
s | yeah I mean we have we have so how well |
s | how well developed our plans are often |
s | depends on how |
s | easy and how well we're moving along |
s | with Concepts right like sometimes |
s | you'll have |
s | everything figured out for a concept and |
s | you're just waiting for the development |
s | resources to get the concept done and |
s | sometimes you have to think about the |
s | concept A very long time and and and and |
s | spend the time iterating on involving a |
s | lot of people getting a lot of feedback |
s | you know all of that takes time when |
s | you're working on on highly complex |
s | things so basically if we're if we have |
s | the situation that |
s | concepting is the main bottleneck then |
s | um it can be that our our future outlook |
s | is very short and by that I mean a |
s | couple of months six months or so |
s | and when when we then sometimes have the |
s | situation that we have a bunch of |
s | Concepts worked out |
s | um but we we're waiting for the dev time |
s | to actually get it done it can be you |
s | know a year a year and a half |
s | um ahead |
s | it's it really depends on the situation |
s | and like we said we don't we don't we we |
s | always commit for roughly a six-month |
s | time frame or like a period where we are |
s | very very |
s | clearly know what we're doing and we're |
s | nowhere like 70 of our resources are |
s | going to be going and 30 of the |
s | resources are going to be reserved for |
s | reacting to what's going on in the game |
s | and you know patches and and and and and |
s | smaller shifts that we need to do |
s | um |
s | and then beyond the six month Mark there |
s | is a rough idea that we know we will |
s | have to flesh out |
s | uh because you know that you need to |
s | talk to you need to talk to people about |
s | Concepts the longer the game runs |
s | honestly the more challenging it becomes |
s | to make changes obviously because you |
s | have people that have made a gameplay in |
s | certain things that you didn't never |
s | intend it like you're you're you're |
s | you're like you know this this is no |
s | longer just my design space in which I |
s | can make changes I have to take into |
s | account what have the players done with |
s | it and |
s | how much can I still support what |
s | they're doing |
s | uh with my new concept and you have to |
s | worry about obviously data migration as |
s | well and and you know |
s | can't just in the alpha things were easy |
s | in the alpha we would just say |
s | everything gets wiped actually that's |
s | the |
s | to show my artifact from the from the |
s | alpha days |
s | a white pipe shirt |
s | that hasn't been around for uh it's got |
s | the Albion logo on in everything so it's |
s | like official the official white pipe I |
s | wore this in a death talk during the |
s | alpha days because white pipe was such a |
s | it was a phrase that was going around |
s | right like everybody was excited about |
s | wipes obviously we don't have any wives |
s | anymore |
s | um and that makes things |
s | challenging sometimes to be fair |
s | um and it doesn't get easier the more |
s | Advanced the the |
s | um |
s | the game has become but obviously it's |
s | also we can do bigger things now we can |
s | we have the resources and we also have |
s | the time frames we feel the game doesn't |
s | need to constantly get things |
s | necessarily to |
s | um at least like in terms of features |
s | there's a lot of features there now |
s | already so we can focus resources into |
s | bigger uh changes |
s | in a way yeah I I feel like the the |
s | switch from uh what was it three updates |
s | per year to two really allowed you guys |
s | to do more in-depth updates that really |
s | have improved the game an absolute ton |
s | but uh you've pretty much answered all |
s | the questions I had for this interview |
s | but I I know that Marco he has been |
s | chomping at the bit to ask his questions |
s | and I'm sure he's got some very |
s | important ones uh Marco do you have any |
s | questions I do and it's one word dragons |
s | hahaha |
s | uh eventually yeah |
s | [Laughter] |
s | why not okay yeah yeah as soon as |
s | somebody can invent a dragon without a |
s | tail we will be all set it sounds great |
s | um but thank you guys so much for your |
s | time today we really appreciate it I |
s | guess I do have one last question for |
s | you guys before I do let you go |
s | um do you have any plans to celebrate |
s | this on Sunday because Sunday is a huge |
s | day for all you guys can all get |
s | together and have an in-office |
s | celebration maybe without Robin |
s | yeah I'm gonna miss it our big |
s | anniversary part is tomorrow David David |
s | is hosting |
s | yeah I am I have a very big I have a |
s | very big Garden so I'm always hosting |
s | our parties so yeah that the whole team |
s | is Gonna Come Together tomorrow uh we're |
s | gonna have cocktails and barbecue and |
s | we're gonna celebrate well into Sunday I |
s | hope |
s | sounds fantastic I I'm so proud of |
s | everything that you guys have done Robin |
s | you look like you have something else |
s | you want to say yeah I mean I want to I |
s | want to invite the players to join the |
s | anniversary celebration in the game of |
s | course |
s | um with with the ongoing anniversary |
s | event I'm really really really looking |
s | forward to your feedback on on this one |
s | we we love the idea of bringing albion's |
s | history to life and um |
s | and you know recognizing that that |
s | Albion is a world built by players and |
s | that these players leave a legacy and |
s | that you're in this with us and I want |
s | to thank you all for yeah playing our |
s | game enjoying our game for all the |
s | feedback and input that we get from you |
s | guys and we're really looking forward to |
s | the next five years with you uh and Way |
s | Beyond that hopefully |

s | want to thank you all so much for this |
s | it's been a tremendous success thank you |
s | so much and we hope to do it again maybe |
