The M28 Con Tromboncino is probably a good example of what the bolt action rifles of BFV should be.

We're talking about a weapon that has an rather high bullet velocity that makes it one of the best sniper rifles in the game and a high fire rate that makes Lee-Einfield jealous (and lets you go toe to toe with assault players and anyone with a fully automatic weapon).

  • M28 Tromboncino base fire rate: 88 (upgraded 100)
  • Lee-Enfield base fire rate: 72 (upgraded 84)

The former is the glorious dream of any aggressive recon. It should also be known that the medic carbines are able to pull off head shots like a full on bolt-action rifle and the hit boxes for heads is much larger in BFV than they were in BF1.

(By the way, the Commando Carbine is getting buffed. The gun that has the silencer or whatever on it. Way more unique than any of the bolt action rifles.)

But why play recon at all?

The medic class can self-heal an infinite number of times, has access to AP mines, can revive everyone and do so faster and can use the "Combat Medic" role which allows increased sprint speed when at low health and turns on BF1 melee mode.

Remember melee in BF1? Where you could lunge at people and finish them off quite effectively? Yeah, the medic can do that and seriously go on some sprees when using a heavy weapon (yes, weapons do different amounts of damage but the game doesn't tell you that for some reason)!

Sure, you can spot people. That's the one thing recon can do. If you want to snipe though, switch to medic. They have the better rifles.

When I played BF1, the scout was my favorite class. I love bolt action rifles and their relation to World War 1 and World War 2. Within BF1, the scout could potentially keep up with assault and be highly valuable to the team. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with the sweet spot mechanic, which honestly was unnecessary in BF1 and more often than not was blocked by a character's arms as you were tracking them horizontally.

I cannot fathom why Recon and the weapons associated with it are so nerfed this time around and arguably useless in relation to everything else within BFV.

Dice, you have to give some love to the recon class and those of us who use bolt action rifles in an aggressive manner because we actually want to contribute and be effective out there on the battlefield. The Pacific Front is on the horizon, and with that comes the Arisaka. Eventually, an Eastern Front may arrive and that brings the Mosin Nagant.

I'd like those guns to be competitive as they are associated with infantry and sniping (more so the Mosin with the latter, as the Arisaka is more so a standard issue rifle). They're very iconic to those settings, so I don't want them to be useless.

I'm not the first person to suggest this, but the three most common suggestions I can recall are:

  • Increase the base fire rate
  • Increase the base bullet velocity
  • Increase the base damage

It's bad enough that zeroing is a "specialization" rather than a given feature of the class.

If you made it this far, thanks for the read.

Model 8 is a f*cking beast of a gun with upgraded ROF. 2 shot kill up to what, 50-75m. Spot first and with well placed shots you can kill 2-3 people per magazine. It's crazy how good the gun is for aggressive play.

Model 8 is my jam and the Stromboli Trumpet is still arguably better

It can headshot kill, has a near identical 2 shot range, a RoF that still enables aggressive follow up shots, loads an extra round, and comes with a free grenade launcher that deals meaningful damage to tanks and can break fortifications

Add in infinite free healing (which completely ruins any sniper duel where your opponent can't score a headshot, which in my experience is mostly always) and there's almost no reason to pick SLR Scout over Trombone Medic besides flares

I've been a dedicated aggro-as-f**k Recon through BF1 (Russian Trench is best gun) and BFV, but Medic now does that job and more so much better

You're forgetting one of the most important gadgets in the game. Spawn beacon. My sqaud constantly backcaps and the spawn beacon has won us countless games.
