[2020] What the fuck is up with custom controller mapping on PS4?

Hoping someone can enlighten me on how to map custom controls for BF5 on PS4, specifically the flight controls. I’m trying to use the custom control set up in the options menu. When in the customization menu, the instructions state “press a button or move a stick to assign that input to this game option. Press the options button to cancel, or hold the options button to clear the current assignment.” Problem is, none of this is working. In the menus when holding option, it doesn’t clear the default buttons tied to that action, and pressing the button you want tied to that action does nothing. On top of that, buttons tied to options from the main menus, maintain their function in this customization menu. For example, trying to tie R2 to “throttle up” doesn’t designate R2 to that action, instead it brings up the social/friends menu overtop of everything. Is this just another matter of BF5 being broken af? Or am I just a r------d who’s doing this wrong? Many thanks to anyone who can be of help!
