The game had extra channels at launch to accommodate the extra traffic, and is now being reduced to a normal amount because the honeymoon phase is over.

Preferring pvp or pve has absolutely no relevance when it comes to developer decisions to adjust channel numbers. When a new MMO comes out there is tons of hype, and after a few months about 50% of those players fade out, leaving the more stable playerbase behind. Every MMO goes through this. It's nothing to be alarmed about
