233s of focus on the systems design aspects
236s of the game so for instance the removal
239s of loot boxes from the game
241s um that was kind of one of my projects
243s but I work on other virtual economy

286s of them were repeating it's like I got
287s questions that had a lot of uh uh
290s upvotes likes uh questions that are
293s appearing a lot and then questions that
294s were just I found really interesting to
296s bring it here so then I think there is

300s with that said the first question oh wow

309s play rates for mortise in brobo have
312s certainly bring through the roof for a
314s while now when it comes to your stats
317s why then have you not decided to Nerf
320s him in so long do you just enjoy what
323s watching us all suffer
325s so for the second one yes absolutely
329s um but on a more serious note
332s um I think mortise has the problem that
334s he's very
335s fun when he pops off you know when you
337s get those multi-kills you get those
338s trick shots it's really fun but the
340s problem is that he doesn't do that that
343s often so when you look at actual win
344s rates his is quite a lot below average
348s in Robo so if you would Nerf him that
350s would just be even worse of course if
353s you can pick him I think into something
354s that he's really good against it's gonna
356s Excel and you're gonna have a great time
358s but in blind pick in World Bowl
360s especially I don't see a reason we
362s should Nerf him because he's just he
364s would be too bad but I don't know do you
366s guys have differing opinions well we we
369s ban him more often than not when we play
370s public you know it's like he can be
372s really annoying and you actually have to
374s deal with him
375s when he's out there so like especially
378s in power League of course you you you
380s really want to pick a comp if you have
383s early picks that are not easy to count
385s uh that are that are pretty hard to
387s counter of course uh the the mortise
389s first picks out there
391s modus is a great counter pick but
394s outside of that he's actually super
395s fragile
397s yeah if anything uh buff or more it is
399s right absolutely yeah we heard it here
401s first but actually before we move on I
404s guess I guess mortis does have some of
406s the highest play rates and he is one of
408s the most popular Brawlers yes in the
409s game yes
411s um and yeah the combination of these
412s circumstances I guess lead to us not
414s wanting to necessarily change too much

417s yeah I don't know there is many
418s solutions right it doesn't need to be
420s like a Nerf or a buff could be like
422s another mobile brawler like if you
424s create something as exciting as mortis
426s we will decrease the number of Martis I
428s don't know yeah and of course there is
430s Edgar you know there is yeah it's also
432s pretty popular yes of course it's also
434s pretty popular but uh from cairo's
437s um how do you plan on handling an
439s ever-increasing rooster uh roster
452s just imagine the chicken sandwich
455s I never want to stop releasing uh I
457s never want you to stop releasing new
459s Brawlers but I feel uh as to the trophy
462s system might need some improvements to
464s allow it perhaps you feel that changes
466s are aren't currently necessary though I
469s would like to hear like your thoughts
470s about the releasing more Brothers many
473s thoughts so many thoughts do you want to
475s start Frank should I start yeah sure you
478s can start I stood wow yeah no pressure
480s no so so Brawlers are
483s let's not maybe take a step back and and
487s Brawlers are the most important piece of
489s content we have from brawl Stars people
491s play literally the game to unlock
492s Brothers

495s stopping to release Brawlers is a really
497s really tough not to crack

502s we don't think we are there yet limit
503s wise right we have plenty of space for
506s we have plenty ideas to begin with to
508s create more Brawlers so we're not
510s running out of ideas anytime soon

514s and I mean if you if you look at at some
517s of the mobas out there Brussels is not
519s really mobile but there are some
520s comparable elements of course
523s if you look at other mobiles out there
524s they can easily live with like 100 plus
528s Heroes Champions whatever they called in
529s other games plus those are much more
532s complex characters than ours
534s so first yeah we think we can keep at
537s least for the next few years keep
538s releasing Brawlers we might want to
540s reduce the Cadence at a point
542s um but then that would also have to
544s there would have to be something else to
546s make up for that in a way for the
548s excitement for the community and for us
550s as a business so it's a it's kind of a
552s win-win really so if we find a nice
554s replacement for releasing more Brawlers
556s sure why not

559s yeah I think that is a that is a
561s starting point we
563s we need to keep releasing more rollers
566s for the time being and process is mainly
568s about unlocking new Brawlers
570s um on the other side then

610s we're always hoping that with every
612s update we you know hope we can create
615s something that's exciting for the player
616s base and so if we do find something else
619s and there we definitely have some things

623s that might be more interesting

627s if they if it can be as exciting or even
630s more exciting than releasing Brawlers
631s then that's certainly something we want
633s to pursue
634s and so we're constantly kind of thinking
636s through this problem because we don't
638s want to be in a situation where we have
639s 300 Brawlers in the game that is very
641s overwhelming particularly for new
643s players that are coming in and even
644s returning players you know they laughed
646s maybe with 60 they come back and there's
648s like dozens and dozens more and so um
651s there are some things in the works and
653s we'll uh hopefully some of those things
655s will pan out as we continue to progress
658s yes or no I think and I think you lose
660s of course at some point a little bit of
661s the novelty of existing which is all
663s right we already see the comments that
665s oh this is just x with Y like Meg with
668s some other main attack you know and we
670s don't want that right we want every
671s brawler to feel unique to feel special
674s and Noble and I really need to have some
676s some character but to go to the back to
679s Karis question
681s I think that there's the realities of
683s like the the way the trophy leak
685s currently is structured
687s if you if you want to compete if you
689s want to compete in the leaderboards if
690s you want to get the max rewards you need
692s to play all those Brawlers
694s that's not great and it wasn't never
697s intended to be like this

700s um there's going to be some smaller
701s changes in the near future
703s of how we want to tackle this so that
706s should already
707s you know make things a little bit easier

712s releasing Brothers buy more skins

764s community on this as to kind of you know
766s because I think a lot of people perhaps
768s mourned um the removal of of loot boxes
771s and we've been reading through all of
772s that and we just certainly hear you
775s um but one of the most common things
776s that has come up through that is you
778s know there's less excitement with
781s regards to the rewards and I feel that
785s just as much as probably anybody else on
786s the team and so we're thinking of other
789s ways we can kind of continue to create
792s other moments of excitement within the
794s rewards that we give
795s and I think that's really maybe the high
798s order bit in terms of the actual details
800s as to how we're going to do it I think
801s there's multiple ways that we can we can
804s approach it but that I think was one of
806s the key pieces that players were you
809s know commenting about that we certainly
810s feel also on team
812s I think there was just a threat on
814s Reddit it was like
816s it has been five months already since we
818s like that's it's not five months dudes I
820s did that in December you know I was like
822s it's like it feels like it feels like
825s forever it's like forever it feels like
827s it has been no whatever
829s um in that thread it's it's pretty like
831s the question was a paraphrasing was like
834s you know it has been five months which
836s is not true
837s um how do you feel with a change
840s and if you read through the comments and
842s that that is really like essentially the
845s summary of what we see everywhere
846s there's three types of comments
849s I would I would say like half maybe a
852s little bit more of people are straight
853s up just happy
854s because you know it's all comments like
856s ah you know I played Brawl for two years
858s I didn't get a legendary and now it's up
860s I get it it's much more predictable it's
862s defined people are applauding us from
865s removing the the loot box system as well
867s and say it's it's it's always better to
870s not have the RNG there so that is one
872s type of comment then there's another
874s type of comment which is what Frank just
876s touched on like this this nice fun
880s dopamine kick of the randomness there's

883s you know a surprise all of

887s and that is something we'd like to you
889s know look into
891s but don't expect a drastic change of how
893s the system works on this side it's just
895s unrealistic We're not gonna bring back
897s boxes in the way we had them and I'd
900s like to say that as clear as it is to
901s not said wrong expectations loot boxes
904s will not come back to rosters
907s um and then last but not least
909s the last point is then about chromatic
911s Brawlers
912s and that some of you are unhappy and

917s how that currently works it has to work
920s like it is at the moment but we're
922s looking into that and and maybe sooner
924s than later we make some changes there
925s we're also not super happy with how that
928s structure works for the record it's it's
930s just like currently because the raw pass
933s brawler needs to be like protected in a
935s way so that it's not easy for everyone
938s to unlock because else why why would you
940s sorry buy the broadcast in the first
942s place if you could do that we are a
945s business and it needs to work in a way
946s at least
948s but at the same time maybe we went a
950s little bit too harsh on how hard it is
953s to unlock a chromatic brawler today

958s what you said like we run a business and
960s then that's the thing that nobody like
962s is really transparent about like no
964s gaming company really is transplantable
966s like and if you see the things that we
969s do for the players that release and we
971s change because of feedback I think we
973s are like above the average of in the
975s gaming industry yeah so like yeah praise
978s to us like applause
981s because I think we do like a really good
983s work uh when it comes to like listening
986s and acting on what the community is
989s talking about but at the end of the day
991s if like we don't make the game uh
994s profitable then we have to kill it like
996s it's simple as that yeah

1002s much on on this on this side but but
1005s there's a practical reality we want to
1007s keep this game running ideally as long
1010s as possible I mean for if I see in this
1013s room and there's a whole team behind the
1014s scenes which loves working on this game
1017s really and we're trying to make it as
1019s good as possible and that it again it's
1022s like it's a it's a win-win hopefully you
1024s have a lot of fun with it
1025s and you find it that that you you can
1029s support that fund by spending a few
1031s bucks every now and then and that's you
1033s know all we're hoping for really

1130s it's it replaces nothing
1133s there was nothing else before there it's
1136s like if your if your account was maxed

1139s there was nothing left and
1142s opening more boxes would just give you
1143s more coins
1145s but nothing else

1148s now since we've built all of that we we
1151s removed the coin component entirely
1152s that's lives now in the in the tail end
1155s of the broadcast and then other sources
1157s in the game like mastery
1159s so that left nothing
1162s and there's nothing we replaced with
1164s Master sorry with Fame as kind of a way
1167s to at least show off how much invested
1169s you are

1173s and yeah there's nothing more to it I
1175s think with this update now that we
1176s transitioned to having the the battle
1178s cards at the beginning of the game that
1180s already highlights that a little bit
1182s more and I've seen you know a few more
1184s positive comments comments popping up on
1187s the topic but yeah it's really it's a
1189s replacement for what has previously
1190s nothing
1192s and so there's very unlikely gonna be
1196s any progression connected to this
1197s because again once you hit the end of
1200s the road when it comes to unlocking all
1202s your Brawlers
1204s there's just nothing else we can do your
1206s your account is completed and there's no
1210s no such thing as unlimited progression
1212s because again going back to we're
1214s running a business
1215s so it's it's really really tricky
1217s balance to strike there we thought
1218s instead of giving you nothing would give
1220s you something you can at least show of
1222s your commitment to the game
1224s and that has been our thinking now there
1226s have been some comments on like or maybe
1228s you could give us at least a profile
1229s picture and stuff like this and I think
1232s we're totally open-minded about that
1234s um I'm not saying this is going to come
1235s in the next update or anything like this
1237s but but like having some some potential
1241s to show off your Fame in better ways
1242s makes a lot of sense and goes actually
1245s really well with the with the idea
1246s behind Fame because it's just about
1248s showing off
1250s um yeah
1251s but I think at the same time it's also
1253s it's showing off but I think it's also
1255s together with Master it's a really good
1257s measurement of someone's kind of even
1259s skill level in a game when you I think
1261s for me when I queue up against someone
1262s and I see they have high brawler Mastery
1264s plus a lot of Fame I'm like okay this
1266s guy's this guy's the real deal you know
1267s like I think it's uh yeah I think it's
1270s much cooler because before there was no
1272s way to tell how many Brawlers someone
1273s had in a glance especially at the start
1275s of a match right so I think the
1277s combination of the two actually creates
1279s a lot of transparency to your teammates
1281s and opponents alike and I think that's
1283s really cool yeah I think a lot of a lot
1286s of high-end players previously when they
1288s looked at who's a good player
1290s they looked at things like
1292s 3v3 wins or like maybe the XP level
1297s and again the XP level was just an
1298s expression of how long you're playing
1300s the game really and how much are you
1302s playing the game so now
1304s the combination of Mastery and famous
1306s exactly that just more visible which
1308s gives you at least an information you
1310s know when you apply image
1312s exactly what you just said right then
1314s you know oh this is this is the or maybe
1316s that mortise I don't want to mess with
1318s or yeah something like this
1321s yeah I've seen some comments saying like
1323s dude he was Mars like yeah I just you
1327s know I just reached a martian last week

1347s Mastery for game modes any thoughts

1352s you know when we put in masteries for
1355s Brawlers that was in part due to a
1358s wanting to allow players to kind of show
1360s off their skill uh with a specific
1362s brawler because you have to be quite
1364s good and quite dedicated for that matter
1366s to actually get to that title unlock
1369s um I think game modes for masteries is
1372s interesting I think we'll have to think
1374s about the right way to to approach that
1376s especially if game modes get rotated out
1379s things like that there's some there's
1381s some concerns there but we're always
1382s looking for ways to allow players to
1384s show off kind of their complement a
1387s complimation
1388s accomplishments accomplishments
1390s achievements and achievements or
1392s achievements in the game so
1394s um yeah certainly it's up for discussion
1396s hmm any opinions on that topic yeah no I
1399s mean I think it's actually a really cool
1402s idea in the future sometimes because I
1404s mean yeah first I first wish was to to
1407s show off your dedication to a brawler
1409s yeah but I think equally some people are
1411s really passionate about game modes the

1414s um so yeah it could be uh it could be
1417s something we could consider for sure I

1552s uh campaign and then like we reveal that
1555s brawl star is in a theme park
1557s like it was a huge moment and then we
1560s felt like oh how can we top that now and
1563s then we're always like trying to make
1565s something more impactful or more or
1568s cooler than that and it will never like
1571s really felt like oh this is not as cool
1573s so like if you release this it'll be
1575s like I don't care
1577s so I think like we I don't think like it
1579s was something that we
1582s um
1583s we we can use as a example of uh write
1587s call because I think we we kind of mess
1590s up a bit where we are we're trying to
1592s mix lore with the game content and think
1595s that was the problem right we never
1596s aimed that goal like we want to reveal
1599s this and then we never really had like
1601s um a clear goal
1604s and yeah we never like managed to top
1606s off the Star Park even though like we
1607s were working with many creatives uh many
1611s ideas killing ideas like you've seen the
1614s uh cairo's uh deep fake for example it
1618s was one of the ideas we we had for an
1621s ex-campaign and then the thing is that
1623s we never stopped working on it it's not
1625s that we don't like Lord uh cease to
1628s exist we just never managed to find like
1631s a really good idea that we're proud of
1632s to release
1634s uh with that said we are still working
1636s on it and we still want to release
1637s something as cool as they start Park
1640s but as Frank said as well
1642s like everything we create is about based
1644s on the same uh
1646s on on the same routes right it's like
1648s every brawler comes like from a region
1651s in the park and then this region means
1653s something so like they sometimes they
1655s have relationships uh among each other
1657s and actually there is another question

1664s question saying like what is the brother
1665s we're most proud of or like the one the
1667s brother that you think there is a really
1669s good cool impact and I think it was
1671s Bonnie and Janet which was like I think

1678s New Concept designer concept artist
1681s and she managed to like bring her new
1684s vision to an old vision from Paul or old

1690s uh concept artist and it fits so well I
1693s think like it's the best combination we
1695s have and then when we release those two
1697s we had so much fun art I think it was
1700s the record like we broke the record of

1704s and It just fits like so well and it we
1707s created something new like we unite
1709s these two worlds it felt fits so well

1714s create is still is based on the lore we
1717s are writing as we go

1727s there's this little Snippets in there

1731s have sometimes it's in an environment
1734s sometimes it's in a broader description
1736s so we are actually we we keep like we
1739s never really stopped dropping hints
1740s about the world but I but I guess we
1743s haven't been as explicit as to release
1747s another uh Star Park investor video
1749s something like this right yeah but don't
1752s mistake it for
1754s like that there is the story being
1756s developed in the background constantly
1758s it's just what's on the on the visible
1760s level is is not so much at the moment

1787s building the storyline for brawl which
1790s was before a global release uh we
1792s started having all these discussions and

1796s all know that we started as a science

1822s we dropped this bomb

1827s and in an Ideal World we would have kept
1830s telling the story of this world
1832s and we have but it's just not visible

1837s you know very hidden in a way it's very
1839s implied more yeah it is you have to read
1842s a lot between the lines Etc and I think
1845s yeah we always we always had this Grand
1848s idea that yes there's some
1851s story which is developing but we also
1854s wanted to be very Community Centric from
1856s the get-go when I from my from our
1859s original pitch before I became the game
1860s Need for brawl one of the one of the 15
1863s items on that list was let's be
1865s Community Centric more than any other
1867s Superstar game before
1868s and
1869s Paul back then he really bought into
1872s that as well and he was always of that
1874s opinion that let's let's have a
1876s something like a blank canvas
1878s and let's
1880s look what the community is doing with it
1882s so you know let them play with it and
1885s let them dream of ideas and how
1887s everything fits together and you see a
1889s little bit of that in the game today
1890s that influence our thinking that it went
1892s to the community and back the best
1894s example I can give is Piper Enrico you
1898s know
1899s we didn't come up with the idea that
1901s Rico and Piper aren't laugh it was like
1905s it's kind of ridiculous if you think
1906s about it yeah but
1908s um
1908s but the community disagreed with that
1911s and for them it was the thing
1914s and actually I'm not spoiling too much I
1916s mean you've seen the Valentine's video
1918s last year we did right uh Rico is
1921s falling in love or is in love with a
1923s vending machine because he's kind of
1925s also a vending machine
1927s um and then of course you know that goes
1929s south and everything if you haven't
1930s watched that go to YouTube check it out
1933s um but yeah so so that was a touch to it
1936s but but even like the classic Ricochet
1938s skin we released Christmas two years ago
1941s or so yeah you know like um it has like
1945s a bullet scrape from pipas Piper's rifle
1949s and stuff like this so we are we're
1952s taking what the community is doing and
1954s reintegrated with our story arc which
1957s I've I think like just you know it says
1960s living breathing object but the
1962s community as well has a place on the
1964s table

1976s Super Sound May campaigns only real
1979s Supercell make on things solely about

2056s skins because as you see as well there's
2059s so many con complaints once we pick the
2063s winner like even though like I try like

2068s then we always gets complaints it's like
2071s I want to like have one campaign that
2073s like this is good one like everybody was
2075s happy with that and then we can move
2077s forward to the next one but I think we
2078s didn't uh get there yet I guess it's so
2082s subjective right yeah just like
2084s different themes people like different
2086s skins like yeah it's a
2089s it's like agreeing on what the best
2090s topping is for a sandwich you know I
2092s don't I don't think it's gonna happen no
2093s it's it's it's it even starts earlier
2095s it's agreeing of what is a sandwich yeah

2101s not weird long team discussions about

2105s it's like but but but realistically

2109s any any given Skin Map whatever we show
2113s players there will always be a good
2115s percentage of the community which just
2117s hates it yeah and a percentage of
2120s players who loves it is like with any
2122s content we're throwing out it's not only
2123s about make it's like it's just like that
2126s it's just opinions and personal tastes
2128s and that's okay it's like we're like I
2132s think there is nothing more boring than
2133s finding something everyone kind of can
2135s agree with super average I'd rather have
2138s a skin which half of the community loves
2140s and half of the community hates
2142s like that is much better than there's
2144s some actual emotion there and some
2145s connection to the skin well if you just
2148s do something average nobody really cares
2150s about it nobody feel offended as well
2152s it's like
2154s yeah but to go back to the question I I
2156s almost think like
2158s pins are a little bit too simple yeah
2161s it's like there's not much even creative
2164s space there they're very clearly defined
2166s what they are
2167s so there's not much it doesn't make much
2169s sense for us to have a make contest for
2172s Pins I agree yeah and uh Brawlers are
2175s tricky it's like braless is one of the
2178s few things in the game where we actually
2179s have quite strong opinions on how do
2181s they fit in the world what can they do
2183s sometimes we are like oh how many
2185s assassins do we want to create this year
2188s how many marksmen
2189s how many support characters and all of
2192s that
2193s um and so getting a community brawl at
2196s the right moment and right time plus
2198s then even like thinking about reward
2200s structure for that it's really tricky we
2203s just have two strong opinions on rollers
2204s as well like how do they fit the world
2206s Etc it's like yeah I I have a problem
2210s like thinking even like that that would
2213s possibility it's like it just does make
2215s very little sense for me yeah maybe we
2217s can try at some point like I wouldn't
2219s like throw the idea away but maybe it's
2221s not the moment yet I think there's Kings
2223s still need some improvements and the
2225s community is still getting excited at
2226s least like we're still getting more and
2228s more submissions
2231s um I mean if you do have brawler ideas
2233s though please continue to post about
2235s that I mean all of that we we definitely
2238s are monitoring all the time as to what
2242s um fan art and content that Community is
2245s creating and we're paying attention so
2246s that will certainly help yeah I think
2248s that's maybe something worth mentioning
2249s exclusively that we do monitor like a
2251s lot of places for a lot of ideas and a
2254s lot of the ideas you guys suggest
2256s actually make it in the game maybe not
2258s originally how they were suggested but
2260s in some shape or form they can shape
2261s what we put into the game so keep giving
2263s feedback at least I know for myself at
2265s least for balancing I get tons of good
2267s ideas for you know from people
2268s suggesting reworks and and Gadget
2271s designs gear designs it's it's
2273s invaluable so yeah keep doing my job for
2275s me thank you no that's that's great I
2278s think that's also like the
2281s the whole like getting inspired by the
2284s community so I think a big theme for us
2287s in general like I mean you will see
2290s Adrian for example interacting on on
2292s Reddit
2294s um you know like explaining like his
2296s philosophy around balancing and so on
2297s and so forth
2298s I think that's just true for everything
2300s we do
2301s there's also a practical reality that
2303s there's a lot of community artists out
2305s there
2306s and it happens quite frequently that
2308s we're creating a skin and something
2310s vaguely similar has been created before
2312s and that that is just bound to happen

2315s like you mentioned Janet right I wonder
2318s how many like skin ideas which uh
2323s represent her as a pop star I've been
2324s flying around before
2326s we made a pop star Janet
2329s taunts it it is like it doesn't
2332s necessarily mean that this you know if
2334s you created a skin like that doesn't
2336s necessarily mean you directly inspired
2337s us to do the skin because there might be
2340s you know a bunch of other people who did
2341s it yeah but at the same time of course
2344s like we see your ideas and suggestions
2346s and they can influence our thinking
2349s yeah and I think like if we do get
2351s things like we see a skin like we need
2353s to have into the game we'll talk to the
2355s artist directly it's not that we are
2357s just just gonna rip off this King and
2359s that's it it's ours it's rip yeah so

2363s uh some of the complaints I I saw on
2367s social media like I never seen this king
2370s before and then before they say oh it's
2372s like similar to that but yeah like if
2374s people are making Concepts about rip
2376s it's not like eventually you'll meet
2380s like this uh coincidence right
2382s but um and sometimes people in the
2384s community who create fan art
2386s end up you know like doing stuff for us
2389s I mean they're like working with us yeah
2392s working with us like most most of the
2395s tons of pins right now are created by
2398s someone who's previously worked on
2400s just you know fan art of pins
2403s and so we Gonzalo who's one of the UI ux
2407s guys on the team he reached out to him
2409s and said hey would you would you like to
2411s do more of that and get paid
2413s and now he's a freelancer for us and a
2416s bit of context uh Gonzalo also had a
2419s problem where he was trying to do
2420s something different because this guy
2423s like uh he was doing for every skin that
2426s we released and then Gonzalo was working
2428s on the same thing and like I have now to
2430s think of something different because
2431s this guy done exactly how I've I've done
2434s it so like I'll just hire him
2437s she's tired good solution yes good
2440s solution yeah there's a few people who
2441s like ended up like this
2443s um so
2445s depends on one example but we have some
2448s some of our marketing fan art or
2452s marketing art now has been a fan artist
2454s before
2456s um so most yeah a bunch of the maps
2459s which come into the game now are coming
2461s from from modios who also did that you
2464s know as a fan he created his map maker
2467s tour as a fan and now it's getting paid
2469s to Great Maps so it's like yeah we are
2472s we are really out there and like trying
2474s to listen to the community and see what
2476s their
2477s put up yeah
2479s nice and what they don't put up
2482s yes yes it's important question from
2486s wheezing to TF2 with into the Team
2490s Fortress what is that I don't know I
2492s don't know oh is there like a fart joke

2497s is the developer team uh developer team
2500s satisfied with the current state of the
2501s game I guess we kind of respond that
2502s already but do you guys feel like you
2504s made a mistake somewhere along the way
2507s state of the game is of course like it's
2510s a pretty
2512s way of talking it

2516s as a as a game developer of a live
2518s service game I don't think you ever
2519s really 100 satisfied with the state of
2522s your game there's always something more
2524s to do and if it would have unlimited
2526s resources there would be maybe you know
2528s they saw so many ideas we have as a team
2531s we'd like to execute on but it's uh yeah
2534s so it's it's a it's an always work in
2537s progress
2538s and some people say you know Perfection
2541s is the the enemy of greatness it's like
2545s it's really trying to push too hard to
2547s make something perfect
2549s it's it's like it's an Impossible
2551s Project

2554s I think for the rest like I have a
2556s personal thing where I'm like
2558s I think we made a mistake and that was
2560s when we introduced power level 10 and
2562s 11.
2563s uh and the gears
2566s and there is like the the basic design
2568s was was for me
2570s and um
2573s we discussed about like expanding on the
2576s characters and how can we go a little
2577s bit deeper Etc and gears felt like a
2580s really nice way of doing this and giving
2581s you know players a lot of abilities to
2584s adapt the characters and so on and so
2586s forth
2587s and technically all of that worked
2590s but it wasn't fun enough or it was too
2593s pricey for the fun
2594s and I mean we heard that loud and clear
2596s we made adjustments and all of that but
2599s if I could go back in time
2601s I would not introduce two power levels
2603s at the same time I think that was a
2604s mistake and now we cannot take it away
2607s anymore but we are thinking about you
2609s know like can can we still improve the
2611s situation from where we are today
2613s we're not we're not seeing a lot of
2614s complaints about gears anymore today and
2616s I think gears are now on a solid state
2619s but we're still thinking about the whole
2621s thing and I think it informed a lot of
2623s our thinking about design and and you
2626s know like when when we think about
2628s what features to work on and how to roll
2630s out if we want to do the next power
2632s level at a point you know how would that
2635s work I think we have a better
2637s understanding today of the
2639s the the fund ratio of feature needs to
2642s have to justify another power level
2646s because another power level is just
2647s another sync at the end of the day and
2650s it it might make sense at a point to
2651s have another power level no worries not
2654s anytime soon wait it's not a it's not a
2657s lot of sweating a lot of sweating going
2659s on not on our roadmap right now but uh
2663s but yeah it's something like I I
2665s personally learned a lot from I think I
2668s think the whole team did for sure
2670s it's it's one of these situations where
2672s like
2673s sometimes you you might even have a
2675s hunch and you know some some people on
2678s the team even Danny pointed out before
2679s ah might not be that great
2682s but then then you you feel like oh we
2684s got to ship this and we're gonna do this
2686s and then you do it and then it doesn't
2688s fly
2689s I think what's what's also another
2691s important thing for me personally is
2692s that
2694s it's okay to make these mistakes as long
2696s as you go back and and address them and
2698s you know face it
2699s you know
2701s up front and and just deal with it and
2703s make it better right like process gets
2706s an update every other month
2708s so it's nothing that we cannot fix stuff
2710s if it's broken
2712s again I think I think the key there is
2715s yeah we have to take risk we have to be
2716s bold we have to create cool stuff or try
2718s to create cool stuff if we're just going
2720s to take the safe bets it's going to be
2721s really unexciting I think the game
2723s varies shortly
2725s um so we we do want to I think you can
2727s say try bigger things and then you know
2730s see how it works and if it doesn't work
2731s well we're happy to say okay we were
2734s wrong and we address it
2737s um of course everything takes time but
2738s but I think that's the Baseline at least
2741s that we kind of strive to and I think
2743s maybe the contacts are like some line of
2745s thought on why we thought gears would
2747s work is because uh
2749s like it's very scalable like if you as
2752s we said like we need to be like a
2754s profitable uh business and to think of
2758s like oh what if you do this idea where
2760s like I need like very little art like
2763s because like it's just in a Raw Status
2766s stats a boost like I could expand my
2770s economy because like bro before it was
2772s like so flat it was so easy to max out
2774s right like it's still bro it's one of
2777s probably the uh most uh friendliest when
2781s it comes to free to play players for
2783s sure yeah so like when you look at the
2784s design even though you think maybe like
2786s players will find it a bit um
2789s not too exciting or like they'll they
2791s won't like but they will strive Force
2794s like this extra level it felt good on
2797s the paper and it felt like this is a
2799s really great good idea and as you said
2802s like I did point out like maybe that's
2803s not so fun but but like I'm part of the
2807s team so like if the thing agreed with
2808s this decision then yeah if you guys
2810s believe this is the way to go then I'm
2813s all on board and we learned of course we
2815s learned like the the whole
2818s like the the whole idea around this was
2820s like we looked at Clash of Clans right
2822s and for them another town hall level is
2826s a huge thing yeah
2827s but what they got right and we got wrong
2830s is that they have a ton of gameplay
2832s behind that upgrade of the tunnel level
2835s and we had essentially a passive which
2838s was kind of boring yeah and with an
2842s exponential upgrade curve it just feels
2844s bad it's like it's an another it was an
2847s underwhelming moment
2848s uh especially if the price tag is too
2851s high and I mean we ultimately agreed on
2854s that and we made a change but I I think
2857s that's also forward-looking informing a
2860s lot of of our thinking yeah and I guess
2863s that brings me back to it's more
2864s important to get the learnings out of it
2866s and fix things instead of stopping to
2869s try out new things
2871s you like I think there was also one of
2873s the earlier questions was like
2874s you know will there be other huge
2876s changes or something I think you should
2879s expect us to do big things and and try
2882s out big things and yes they might fail
2885s um but that's ultimately okay in my book
2887s at least so so I'm I'm okay with us
2890s failing uh when we execute on these big
2893s items
2894s if we really believe in that they can
2896s make a difference and then if they don't
2898s work because things are incredibly hard
2900s to test when you have millions of
2901s players
2902s and and we are a group of like 30 40
2905s people here and even if we throw it to
2907s test us you know like they might not
2909s look at it the same way like our
2910s community does actually
2912s so it's very you know some things are
2914s impossible to test again the gears
2916s update is a great example of that
2917s because technically it worked
2919s but it wasn't fun enough
2922s yeah and uh back to kind of the earlier
2924s point that Frank brought up around live
2927s service game development
2929s um you can think of it sort of like uh
2931s you're kind of pushing this Boulder
2932s which is your game kind of up a hill and
2934s if you're not constantly thinking of
2936s ways to keep pushing it up and getting
2938s it to a higher point then actually it
2941s doesn't stay still it actually degrades
2944s over time
2945s and so you know when we take these
2947s bigger risks if they pay off we can push
2949s that boulder up further and if you think
2952s of the top of the mountain as like the
2954s funnest if that's a word
2957s of stars you can have which we're all
2959s inspired to do then uh we want to push
2962s that as far up as possible and so taking
2965s these risks will help us in those
2967s regards and we think that's really
2968s important so and we'll learn from them
2970s and at least that means that decisions
2972s are being made right if we're not taking
2973s risks and we're just staying stale then
2975s we're not making decisions just find
2977s those mistakes and we'll fix them later
2978s yeah I I think there's one more thing I
2981s want to say about this
2983s when
2985s so it's incredibly like our player base
2987s is so
2988s diverse in what they like doing and and
2992s how they play
2994s um occasionally imposting on Twitter
2996s about the the average trophies and how
2998s many percent of people are in which
3000s bracket of trophies Etc
3002s and people on Twitter are always
3003s surprised when they see that our average
3005s average players in fact just around 13
3008s 000 trophies or something maybe now it's
3010s 14 000. but
3012s it's like that is the average there's a
3016s bunch of people who are below that who
3018s just play Rosas casually for fun they
3021s have 10 15 minutes here up there and
3022s they just wanna you know have some fun
3025s so for us making game that is on one
3028s side super casual friendly and on the
3030s other side
3032s um we have literally Pro players who are
3034s playing this for a living
3036s so how can we how can both be true at
3040s the same time
3041s and sometimes we break things for the
3044s pros knowing that it will break things
3047s for the pros knowing that it would
3049s create imbalance
3050s because it's fun for the majority of our
3052s players
3054s and and that is I think it's one of
3056s these
3058s I don't want to apologize in advance but
3060s we're gonna we're gonna keep introducing
3063s things which will break the game one way
3065s or another
3065s in an Ideal World we make features which
3067s work for everyone and I guess masteries
3069s now have been one of those examples
3071s where
3071s we made it pretty easy for for new
3074s players to have some fun with it you
3075s don't need to be hardcore to unlock some
3077s of the you know rewards you get for
3079s brawler
3080s but at the same time if you don't care
3083s about masteries at all you can just play
3084s the game it's not getting in your way
3086s and eventually you will unlock some
3087s rewards on that track
3089s but if you're really into it you can
3091s also really think time unlock the the
3094s pin the profile picture and the Mastery
3095s titles
3096s and that is of course the ideal scenario
3099s that people are like we're creating
3100s features which work for everyone
3103s but it's unrealistic to expect that that
3105s works all the time

4187s something more we'd want to think about

5581s forever and then jump in and maybe die
5583s instantly to a gale it's not the best

5588s and because it's one of the most popular
5590s because a lot of people actually like
5592s Edgar so do we want to rework something
5594s that a lot of people like that's very
5596s risky I think from our point of view
5599s um so I guess I guess that's where we're

5604s that could be made maybe reworks um but

5629s the higher you go in trophies on power
5631s League the less fun you will have with

5635s and on the on the lower ranges that also
5637s means you're likely
5639s you have fun with it because people
5641s don't know how to deal with them or how
5643s to counter him and so you will see

5647s and on the higher range where where
5649s people generally know how to deal with
5650s an Edgar he becomes weaker
5654s um but I guess ultimately that's okay
5656s for us it's not generally
5659s it's like we get the same argument with
5660s Shelley all the time right it's like you
5662s know but if we would give Shelley a
5664s significant buff
5666s she would just wreak havoc in the lower
5669s ranges of the truck she is already doing

5673s make things worse for new players which
5675s is horrible
5676s and that goes in a similar situation and
5678s actually Shelley is a great counter for
5680s him yeah on the lower ranges funnily
5682s enough yeah it was balance is restored

5687s problematic that every brawler is not
5689s available on high competitive game modes
5692s right maybe some brothers are like
5694s casual and it's just to introduce you to
5696s brawl Stars I mean Chester is a great
5697s other example for a more recent brawler
5699s that's more of a for fun brawler I would
5701s say rather than this is an Esports ready
5703s always pick brawler uh although he was

5711s fundamental philosophy is that not every
5714s brawler has to be viable at all ranges
5716s at all times and equally balanced
5718s because that would make the game also
5719s very stale if you don't see any
5721s progression in how you yourself see
5723s brawl stars and how you improve as a
5726s player and what the picks you start
5727s liking and disliking and so forth then
5729s it would also be I think quite Bland to

6016s every single possibility of controlling

6072s he was completely broken when we
6074s released him so I cannot really say that
6076s I'm super proud of that even though of
6078s course I jumped him and then uh owned
6081s people for a few hours or so before we

6086s um this guy I do I do like the the
6089s release when when we released Bell quite
6093s a bit I think the storytelling around
6095s belt's release was really cool I think
6097s the the trio we are establishing there
6100s with bell and Sam now I think it's
6102s really it's just really fun and very fit
6104s it's almost going uh back to the roots
6107s you know it's like it feels just very OG
6110s brawl stars in a way I guess because it
6112s touches touches on the western
6115s um but but yeah I like the storytelling

6118s you know that she's the mom of another
6120s character in the game it's like it's

6129s really actually enjoyed the lead up to
6131s uh the loot box removal I just felt that
6134s there was a lot of breadcrumbs along the

6138s the community event I think that was and
6141s at that point I had only been on the
6143s team for a while a couple months but
6145s just to see kind of the community
6146s reaction towards
6149s um what they were going to get if they
6150s hit their Milestones to what we
6152s announced during the World Finals to
6155s um what we posted on social media all of
6157s it and then obviously a leading up to
6159s the brawl talk and then subsequent
6160s release
6162s um being you know a relatively stable
6164s build also uh at launch all of that was
6167s just like quite quite impressive to see
6170s um and I hope we can do more of that in
6172s the future with other updates uh that
6174s might be coming so yeah I just thought
6176s that was really well I executed among
6178s multiple disciplines

6196s way uh maybe that will be very long but

6271s is like well the previous designer from
6273s brow Stars uh John uh one of the

6278s testing BB and then BB wasn't working
6280s and like I I had just joined joined the
6283s thing I think it was like two weeks and
6285s then I said like oh what if you had like
6287s this bar that charges and then she
6288s knocks out and then he yon just look at
6291s me and said yeah like let's try and like
6293s in my uh experience in the gaming
6296s industry never a game designer like uh
6300s like accepts like a suggestion on the
6302s fly without trying yeah from a commit
6305s manager without trying like hey I can I
6308s have to prove that this is really good
6309s because look at the data look at the
6311s Players like this can like it was just
6313s like a suggestion on the Fly and then it
6314s just tested and that was designed that
6316s yeah very cool we shipped yeah
6319s very cool that's a great story yeah
6322s um I mean for me I think it's very
6323s similar I think it's going to be very
6324s simple for a lot of people you talk to
6326s at supercell
6328s um but yeah I mean for for me I think
6331s the coolest moment on the team in these
6332s two years has definitely been the World
6334s Finals
6335s um in Paris um I'm a huge fan of Esports
6337s myself and just seeing all you know the
6339s fans in person all the pro players just
6342s being really excited about the game you
6343s know just it's a real moment of Pride I
6346s think something you've worked on being
6347s appreciated to that extent by so many
6349s people and of course it's you realize
6351s that you know looking at social media
6353s numbers but it's completely different
6355s seeing someone in person being being
6357s that passionate
6359s um and and that's that was a huge moment
6360s for me personally how did you get into
6362s this job how did I get into this job
6365s um yeah I mean there was I mean a long
6368s story but I worked for another company
6370s for a long time
6371s um and then the previous uh tester on
6375s broadstars um who is still at the
6376s company he's just another project
6378s um he basically asked me if I would be
6381s maybe interested in joining
6383s um and of course I always already a huge
6385s fan of brawl stars and supercell so I
6387s was like let's go for some interviews I
6389s guess or let's try my best and long
6391s story short I apparently you know have
6393s fooled everyone so far so let's hope I
6396s can keep the appearances up yeah cool

6402s it was like my first month on the job uh
6405s so I got here and then we had to
6407s basically work on this project of
6409s removing
6410s um brawl boxes from the game and I think
6413s you know I've been prior to this at
6414s another company which was on a huge Dev
6417s team of like 200 plus people and brawl
6419s stars is quite a bit smaller than that
6421s um and so coming to a small team you
6423s know I really I missed and like I missed
6425s this about large company about small
6427s companies that I worked at which was
6429s having that autonomy where you get to
6432s come to work and you know uh you can
6435s just kind of focus on the craft and make
6437s really good
6438s um features for the games and uh there
6441s was a feature that uh you know uh one
6443s aspect of of this redesign which needed
6446s some work so we ended up chatting with
6448s some folks off team and we got some
6450s pretty direct feedback that you know the
6452s early designs of what you now know a
6454s Star Road were quite
6456s um maybe less thought out and I was
6458s really inspired by the fact that people
6462s were willing to kind of tell you
6463s directly that hey this part might not be
6466s working maybe really consider changing
6468s it um because I'm I guess I really
6471s appreciated when the best idea is won in
6474s terms of when we design something and
6477s you know the fact that people can be
6478s constructive about why they feel
6480s something is better than maybe what you
6482s had initially proposed
6484s um that's something I think that exists
6485s here like people want us to make the
6487s best future possible want us to make the
6489s best uh Brawlers possible and so I I was
6492s just really inspired by
6494s um people genuinely wanting to help out
6496s and give you good feedback
6498s cool how about you Frank yeah I also I
6501s worked with another gaming company
6503s um
6503s until until fortunately
6506s supercell found me and by that moment I
6509s only had heard about the puzzle in one
6511s corner that was Boom Beach
6513s so I had a colleague of mine I worked
6515s with before he had introduced me to Boom
6517s Beach and I think I already had spent a
6519s few hundred bucks
6520s which is very me if you know me
6524s um so so I went through you know like
6527s interviews and everything it was was
6529s kind of fun
6531s um and ultimate ended up relocating to
6534s Helsinki and and you know really getting
6536s into the vibe of things and of course
6538s over the years I started in a very
6540s different role than the role I have
6541s today and but but somehow ended up in
6544s this in this position
6546s and uh yeah for me the coolest moments
6549s in the company
6550s uh the World Finals 2019 in Busan and
6553s South Korea and there will always be
6556s some somewhat uh close to my heart I
6559s think it was just a insane equal event
6561s to go there it was just like the whole
6563s city was you know like breathing raw
6567s Stars South Korea at that point is the
6569s number which is public so I don't mind
6570s talking about it but at that moment we
6573s had five million people in South Korea
6575s playing Rosas every month
6577s and so so everyone there played brawl
6579s stars and it was like
6581s you know we had this giant installation
6583s of uh Robo Spike coming out of the sea
6587s and there was this like huge huge huge
6591s Contraption with like I mean it was like
6594s literally like Kaiju size you know
6597s and uh standing there and seeing people
6600s taking pictures and all of that and then
6602s there was this game exhibition
6603s well we had Ortho Booth which was like
6606s completely branded brawl Stars which was
6608s like almost like Boltz diner with a car
6611s and and characters there and I think we
6613s it was just it was just mind-blowing
6615s moment and I was like we'll never see
6618s something like this in general at
6619s supersawards
6621s what's making me really like coming
6623s coming to go to work every day is like I
6626s think it's just the opportunity work was
6629s so many exciting and awesome people
6631s it's like just it's almost impossible in
6633s most companies to to find like to be
6636s surrounded by people or really like what
6638s they do and and I feel like everyone in
6641s the broad team and then in other teams
6642s here actually they they really want to
6645s be here and they really want to work on
6646s this stuff yeah and that is that is just
6649s super refreshing if you've you know at
6651s like 20 years experience or something
6653s before in different companies and I
6655s never worked in a company where that was
6657s the case and that just is you know it's
6659s just it is cool because you're getting
6661s inspired by your colleagues and all of
6663s this every day so even if you are a bit
6665s lower energy you feel like oh I really
6667s have to step it up because everyone else
6669s is so excited and is giving their a game

6824s channels and take feedback into

6831s sure and some games are in harder

6835s has its own problems too but some games
6837s are certainly have harder problems to
6838s solve than others based on the way
