84s Brawlers creation like game mechanics I
87s also do the art Direction on brawl uh

278s was also very open to my ideas not about

294s idea like a thinking about the most
297s clamorous time of Brawley or brolywood
301s or Hollywood I I was thinking about mix
304s some stuff that it's very iconic like
306s Marilyn Monroe and also Hollywood
309s Boulevard uh this like famous movie from
313s the 30s or the 20s like the Golden Era
317s of the cinema and I was trying to bring
320s that the the very classic iconic
322s characters with some kind of twist so
326s Latina I was trying to make some kind of
330s interesting twist and how these
333s characters should behave so instead of
335s being like more calm and classy Lola has
338s more passion more attitude and has more
341s like this drama of a diva and and also
345s like references to Mary morrow in this
347s in in this epic and also some layers of
350s Scarface and this kind of movie and I'm
355s a huge fan of like movies and Cinema in
359s general like trash movies or her movies
361s or new movies and uh I have like this
365s huge backlog on my mind and there's
367s always some stuff that stick with me
369s about some characters that I think that
371s are so it's so very powerful full that
375s you can always find similarities in
377s characters like all the time so I'd like
379s to explore those things and bring a
382s Different Twist whenever I'm creating a
384s character so Lola is still still today
386s is one of my favorite Brawlers so far
388s like I don't really like her yeah you

396s I I also like it's I remember when we
398s were creating Lola the things you share

552s second Gadget that was actually one of
553s my first the swap ah the swap yeah the

560s joining the team yeah very collaborative

669s some trauma that is usually like those
673s Heroes action heroes they usually have
675s like those trauma and memories from the
677s war and I was trying to think about
679s something else that could be very like
681s traumatic and intense like a
683s kindergarten teacher and with this fear
687s of kids like when he hear the screams
689s and breaking everything like this kind
691s of stuff would be fun and it's funny
693s because he ended up working a theme park
695s so there's only kids running around so
698s he's always in pain and under a lot of
701s stress so yeah and and also the funny
704s thing about his eyes having like this
707s crazy eyes look with the creep smile
710s traumatized that's why he has to hide it
712s so the rice it looks very scary and we
715s actually modeled the whole head his
716s whole head right now so we had to draw
719s like his haircut and stuff he even has
721s like hair kind of cut so you can see in
723s the animation when he jumps you can see
725s a bit of his face a little bit Yeah but
726s it never like the hoodie never really
728s goes down all the way but uh Key's whole
731s head is modeled which is a waste of

832s Hollywood Cop I don't know ah yeah the
834s Eddie Murphy yeah Ed Murphy movie like
838s so he has like this cool guy kind of
841s Vibes and but he's obsessed about
842s martial arts but the thing about just
845s doing a brawler like martial arts
847s like stars we need a fun twist so
851s Michael Jackson would like sprinkle from
853s Michael Jackson Mimi on top yeah so the
856s shoe was like from the from the start
858s that the concept like on the gameplay
860s because like you know you could think
861s like it's kind of like almost felt like
863s that maybe there was like a gameplay
865s idea of this brawler that kicks but or
869s then there was like this kind of
870s prototype of a brawler that shoots but
872s then like he kind of needed to adjust
874s adjust yeah yeah uh the design but yeah
878s I remember like a heater discussion we
880s had that you know I remember even Felix
882s talking about like how can we make like
884s the kicks like just flying kicking or
887s like like shooting like this like uh
889s Force pulse kind of thing you know like
891s this energy balm or something we
893s consider that as well but then because
895s he just like his shoes just respawn you
897s know well which is
903s it actually comes no no it comes off and
905s then immediately spawns another yeah
907s yeah it's like infinite shoe mode yeah
909s yeah he should make money off of it you
911s know just selling start the business the
915s shoe with the Fang shoes there's a swag

987s lot with Lola a bunch of like
989s um character Expressions acting poses
992s because it helps the animators like to
995s to think about ideas about this
997s character and also like to it's almost
999s you show one drawing and then you
1001s explain about this character it's hard
1004s to make people like read characters so I
1006s I'd like to to make this kind of stuff
1008s to to give a chance to the brawler to
1011s introduce himself with the sketches so I
1013s did that a lot and also Bruce Lee and
1017s Jackie Chan was also like major
1019s references for him because he represents
1021s like the the turbo theater there is the
1024s area about action movies so like to have
1027s something about badass cool for like
1030s Kung Fu like art Marshall movies and
1033s like those big guys with machine guns
1036s and also the herrings like the true
1040s heroes and in this genre so I was
1044s thinking about three different
1046s directions for that so let me see and
1048s he's not um
1050s he's a wannabe actor or he's an actor or
1053s a like Steven seagull

1061s because similarly
1064s and yeah I think in this area they are
1067s passionate about movies so I think Fang
1069s is the closest one the one that actually
1072s has maybe a real chance to be an actor

1157s my test was uh roughs and then I had
1160s some ideas but it wasn't Eve but some
1163s references in mind

1170s Space Ghost from coast to coast there's
1173s this weird bug I forgot his name
1176s yeah yeah and because I was thinking
1179s references going are but because I was
1183s thinking like the the fun thing about
1185s Rufus is like we have this like dog
1188s Universe like with the with the girl and
1191s a dog itself and the Space theme I was
1195s thinking about something cool as in some
1197s kind of Arc enemy would be like an alien
1200s and like the the but not a cat because
1202s it's too obvious and and something that
1205s we could play with the alien concept
1207s like a bug so uh Eve is this flea that
1211s wants to colonize roughs pudding eggs on
1215s him to raise her babies so we can you
1219s know huge fan of alien franchise so I
1223s was even talking those days that I
1225s should make Eve a bit more looking like
1227s an alien like a xenomorph yeah because
1230s it would be so cute but yeah I ended up
1233s using like some of the concepts like the
1235s eggs even the shape of the eggs I was
1237s trying to do something close to that
1239s ended up being a bit more close to
1241s Metroid but I also like the design so I
1244s I think it works so she ended up being
1246s like this cute little
1249s spacefully yeah and you introduce a new
1251s body type for it right like yeah the
1253s roller has that I mean now Hank yeah now
1257s I think that answer another question are

1261s yeah they are the things either

1268s tricky because like in kinda

1310s miniminary someone needs to actually

1317s animation and stuff then that would be
1319s the accurate It's tricky because the
1321s tank like we scaled the tank uh a lot to
1324s test right like what the ideal size
1326s would be so Hank scaled alongside it you
1329s know so yeah it might not be exactly the
1331s same as Eve at this point
1334s so I guess we are like more open to a
1337s brawler ideas that are like alien than
1339s cats or dogs right so I still want to
1343s make a more clear reference to the alien
1346s franchise the next problem so Mario

1349s at least the something close to that
1352s because that's my passion I have to I

1377s so Bonnie was the first roller I I
1379s worked on and I I think that was

1382s uh really interesting to think about the
1385s pipeline how we work on here but because
1387s I was like new join to the team uh I
1391s kind of jumped to directly like
1393s fernanda's design
1394s here so Fernando just like
1397s showed showed the team her design and
1400s and then like it was like well now make
1403s it work in game and figure out all the
1406s tests it's a bit more friendly yeah yeah
1409s but it was I I think the the initial
1413s concept already from the was really
1415s strong like with that the girl and a
1417s tiny girl in the Canon shooting herself
1420s I guess that was kind of the yeah
1423s and then from there it was like a really
1425s natural to
1426s come up with the mechanics and I guess
1428s they're like on the gameplay side what I
1430s wanted to emphasize was kind of the
1432s contrast between the two modes to have
1434s the slow and like heavy
1436s mode and then like small and fast uh
1440s mode and then it's kind of switching
1442s between those two
1445s was it part of the concept already that
1447s she was shooting her own feet this
1450s encapsulates you know Fernando's outside
1452s of the box thinking it's like I can't
1456s think of a better example it's like I
1458s don't what does she shoot
1461s the funny thing the the truth about
1464s Bonnie is that when I I had this idea
1467s about exploring two Brawlers at the same
1470s time for this Trio specifically because
1472s like the family thing and everything I
1474s was like yeah maybe we can came up with
1476s like sisters brothers siblings yeah and
1479s I had some Clear Vision for Janet and I
1483s started with her but when it comes to
1486s Bonnie I wasn't having like any fun idea
1489s anything that was like catching me and I
1492s I remember that I did some Explorations
1494s I think was like the slingshot stuff or
1497s yeah I was like kind of sketching
1499s something around that but I wasn't happy
1502s but then I don't know in two days of
1505s Despair I think Panic it might have a
1509s sketch
1510s of one meeting I think one weekly I was
1514s sketching Bonnie's idea and Pavel start
1517s to record when I was sketching in my in
1521s my Sketchbook I think recording what I
1523s was sketching during the meeting not
1525s paying attention
1528s and father started to record and I if
1531s I'm not mistaken that was one of the
1533s first sketches of Bonnie because I was
1535s like okay maybe she just throw herself
1537s out of the canal and she just kind of
1539s suicidal like we can play I don't know
1541s with something destroyed and then came
1544s this idea about like the missing tooth
1546s and then like why not use the tooth
1549s itself to be some kind of I don't know
1552s yeah weapon is there a connection
1553s between you know fangs spawning
1555s respawning shoes
1561s but I remember yeah like we had like a
1563s bit of a trouble and then and we did
1565s like some brainstorming there around
1567s like exactly like should she like shoot
1571s herself from the cannon or should she
1573s like just switch between these two modes
1576s or or how should that work like how is
1579s she controlling the like the cannon is
1583s she actually like perfectly remember
1584s that did you even consider like her
1586s coming back to it somehow like yeah yeah
1588s we we did like go back and forth a bit
1591s on that and it was actually quite
1592s difficult to kind of actually we ended
1594s up with a more simpler design at the end
1597s how it is now uh but we like tried
1600s different kind of things and and like
1603s maybe they kind of would have been a pet
1605s like instead and so on but uh actually I
1608s have a question for Fernanda like did
1609s you anticipate that Janet would become
1611s so popular you know she's one I think
1613s from my perspective she's one of the
1614s most popular in the community right yeah
1616s a lot of Fine Arts this female brother
1618s is one of them
1620s it was completely I was Bonnie is one of
1624s my favorites and I I was more like
1627s aiming to her but
1629s yeah but I don't know why Janet is
1631s popular I don't know if we want to go
1633s there
1635s but like it makes all right there was a
1638s lot of talk about that splash screen
1639s yeah because yeah when when when like we
1642s released the brawler like a bunch of fan
1644s arts was kind of
1646s yeah I was like she's a teenager guys
1650s but yeah but also like it makes sense
1654s because she she's a pop star right yeah
1656s it's almost like a Taylor Swift yeah
1658s yeah kind of vibe so yeah it's
1660s understandable and when you create like
1663s when you're creating Janet was it
1665s already in your mind that there will be
1667s long tools to streel
1669s uh yeah okay the idea was like it's
1672s still being like this Father Figure
1674s because it's so it's really funny yeah
1676s like it would be interesting like in in
1680s that Trio specifically like bring other
1682s Brawlers with some similarities about
1685s the stunt show thing I think it would be
1687s not hard to compete with stew but uh
1691s like risking to be too similar yeah the
1694s same story like it's a place where
1696s people go to do stunts and I don't know
1698s get hurt so how can even Bonnie Bonnie
1701s do this kind of the same thing as stew
1703s which is not drunk
1704s but it's kind of the same idea but with
1707s a cute twist so it was like two
1710s different directions for the same
1712s subjects and I think the family stuff
1714s and also like it's heavily inspired by
1717s the 70s so I could take a look at Jetson
1720s stuff like even to do her both vignette
1724s yeah I was checking some Jetsons
1726s references and doing like different
1728s concepts with this vintage look so and
1731s it she was like the 55th role or
1733s something like that like it blew my mind
1735s back then that it was the first time we
1737s used the jet pack you know like
1741s a single jet pack that's true that's
1744s true both brothers were like very
1746s different yeah we had the jet pack like
1748s first time with this flying thing no we
1750s had flying with Eve before yeah but she
1753s didn't yeah yeah
1755s you've actually applied this over the
1757s water right yeah so that's her special
1759s thing yeah but I remember playing Janet
1761s first time when she uh started flying
1764s like it was everybody was laughing it
1766s was so fun it was like so different from
1768s everything else right and it she like in
1771s the first prototype I remember she was
1772s like flying for 20 seconds
1775s like everybody was just flying
1779s like if you have the option to fly you
1781s just fly yeah yeah you just fly you
1783s don't she's still annoying like that
1784s like especially in gem grab she grabbed

1830s was thinking about do something like
1833s with the underworld like the sewers and
1835s Star Park and I made this concept about
1838s like toxic garbage plants it's called

1845s set up the future somewhere well we just
1848s spoiled it now it's even deeper yeah
1850s it's even deeper yeah yeah it was really
1852s cool because I
1854s people who knows like knows me knows
1856s that I kind of like trash
1859s I like the idea weird obsession with

1863s trash is very much
1865s yeah yeah it's her favorite design I
1868s think like we're going quite back and
1870s forth exactly on this with Fernanda like
1873s uh trying to bring trash to an
1876s environment well well yeah about the
1878s original like brawler designs and also
1881s on gameplay perspective or like kind of
1883s really different the like I remember we
1886s talked already then like
1888s um like about this character who would
1890s be not diving suit and have like a big
1893s like uh anchor as a weapon and that
1897s actually like what uh I was like
1899s prototyping a gameplay idea of of like
1902s this brawler with the big anchor who
1904s could throw that anchor and it would
1907s actually land on ground and stay there
1908s and then he could go and pick it up and
1911s now you might guess
1913s that was uh Sam but we then introduced
1916s those mechanics actually later yeah and
1919s and then we had the other idea of this

2227s this uh Sam on that idea because I had
2230s this original like uh concept and on
2233s gameplay side already earlier with this
2236s like more like a dwarf or like brawler

2243s swinging that ax and have like this big
2245s uh distinct thing like uh attack that is
2249s low and heavy and then he when he has
2251s thrown the ax he's uh attack would be
2253s just bare Feast so it would be fast but
2256s like not as effective that was kind of
2258s the the initial idea but if we're not
2260s like I was like ah
2261s that that ax will not work not
2265s interesting enough like so yeah like

2474s movements in killer jump but then

2480s where or from whom but this idea of did
2482s like what if uh he would actually have
2485s already supercharged so that would help
2487s him then the Ghana get closer to his
2489s enemies too and yeah I think he's one of
2492s the most fun Brawlers yeah he's top tier

2679s cool and he plays pretty well as well

3158s keep it in really minimal any kind of
3160s Randomness in the game and then but we
3164s wanted to do also something really fun
3166s so we had this many different kind of
3169s ideas of a brawler that would be
3170s changing their ultimate somehow so so
3174s after we kind of figured it start
3177s talking about this Candy Land and
3178s something like crazy funny there like I
3181s think the and the Candy Kingdom then
3182s like Chester from there and and I think
3184s they all
3185s team like kind of got like this unified
3187s division quite fast so I think it was
3190s kind of
3191s a really smooth process in at least from
3193s my perspective compared to many of the
3195s other Brawlers we need to like bounce
3197s back and forth much longer I feel yeah
3200s and I think in in my mind it was like
3203s making Gray from a completely different
3206s Universe like even being black and white
3209s it was good to avoid like similarities
3213s because it's completely opposite like
3215s it's the silent roller like from the the
3219s silent moves era and also heavily
3222s inspired by Buster Keaton and the whole
3226s acting thing like their mechanics being
3228s something completely related to acting
3230s and like really
3232s um
3233s acting jokes not acting gags but visual
3236s gags yeah that we could play as gameplay
3239s mechanics this was very fresh to to to
3242s not mix like three Brawlers at the same
3245s time but it would be nicer also like
3249s jump in the production side because what
3252s most people don't know it's like we have
3255s like two months kind of tomorrow for
3258s each update but the actual time that we
3261s have to come up with ideas like do the
3264s research present work in the mechanics
3266s have something kind of ready to brief
3269s Partners like to start working in
3271s mechanics and everything it's like three
3273s weeks four weeks maximum something
3276s around around that
3277s so we don't have like all that counting
3280s that when we deliver an update we also
3283s have interactions that to do for a while
3286s so you cannot just start like a white
3289s page working in something else
3291s so uh it's it's like this work of like
3295s cleaning your mind about everything that
3298s you just created and put other stuff
3299s like at the fresh Direction and working
3302s on that for some time like when oh I
3306s think there's a bit of a pressure of uh
3309s creating something new and knowing how

3317s all the marketing side and without much

3399s cooler animations and stuff they might

3404s months of work and need to be decided
3407s already in advance and they will show
3409s possibly the mechanics of those Brawlers
3411s but we are still might be like Play
3413s testing them and we still want to keep
3414s that like flexibility that okay we
3418s played in in a team we are testing it
3420s out and and we don't like it uh we need
3423s to be able to like change it right but
3426s that is kind of then sometimes difficult
3428s with the if you have already like
3429s started to do some animations and stuff
3432s so it would for sure yeah we try to be
3434s very agile and still have some wiggle
3436s room to change things you know when
3438s there's like feedback later on from
3440s fernan and stuff we try to adapt things
3441s but yeah it is pretty tough sometimes
3443s like like we only have one animator and
3447s Leo Leonidas and he handles like he
3450s manages a team of outsourcers of
3452s animation and just keep in mind that we
3455s do like you know tons of skins and you
3457s know Brawlers Brawlers are of course the
3459s most complex item
3460s uh but everything at the same time with
3463s tons of feedback from everyone and and
3465s it is uh uh like a tall order somehow
3469s works at the end of the day is done and
3472s that's why there's sometimes we sleep
3473s like there's some some um some problems
3476s like for example I just remember like
3478s gray still shoots out of his chest you
3480s know it's really frustrating actually
3481s because but it's like we're always
3483s changing chasing after the next deadline
3485s yeah it's like it's It's tricky to go
3487s back and fix things but we do have that
3490s like listed that he actually is supposed
3492s to shoot out of his finger right yeah
3494s yeah like he does a finger gun thing and

3519s a problem with the concept art it's

3523s modeled the whole thing uh like he's I
3526s think he's shoots out of his right hand
3527s right but the revolver was on his lap
3536s and then I was like Leo you know the
3539s animator I'm sorry you're gonna kill me
3541s but we need to like just sleep the whole
3543s thing
3546s and then it was like this whole big
3548s thing to to like flip all the animations
3551s and then in the end you don't even see
3553s it because he shoots out of his
3557s grateful job but uh it's it's insane
3560s because like imagine that the Brawlers
3562s have more the uh more content related to
3567s create but we have to take care with the
3570s same like saying ego eyes about the
3573s Brawlers with feedbacks on 3D mechanics
3575s art everything skins for them but also
3578s every skin so we we have to be they have
3580s the same care like with the because we
3583s change the the VFX we change animations
3586s we change everything First Kings those
3588s some kind of like small Brawlers that we
3591s have to take care of it it's a lot of
3593s work it's like this Phoenix Pro thing
3595s right like it's it's we the whole team
3597s saw it everyone's like wow this looks so
3599s awesome you know it's we're all super
3600s proud of it it just looks awesome and
3603s then we ship it and it's like we see
3604s these you know this mistakes basically
3606s when you you're on the jump pad you see
3608s all the characters it's hilarious but
3611s it's heartbreaking as well you know like
3612s that's why this happens because no one
3614s thought of like just going on the jump
3616s pad and testing it I guess so did we

7438s the core idea or bra of what is a
7442s brawler alive so it's it's okay you have

7449s but if you understand what makes a
7452s brawler a brawler then you're kind of

7742s to create I think it usually starts with
7744s the Brawlers right like the chromatic
7747s brawler usually defines the theme and so
7749s it all starts with fernanas ideas and
7752s then we try to find like a a good match

7758s like this puzzle of ideas because we
7760s have the main bro we have a brawler that
7763s has a like a concept like it's this part
7765s of part of a all or stuff or candies or
7769s whatever and sometimes we have the
7771s environment not being part like the
7773s environment of this brawler so we have
7775s to find a reason to have this brawler
7778s there and there's the second brawler
7780s that is it's not related any of that so
7783s we have to kind of mix like in in in
7785s this case we have a brother from the
7789s same environment so it's a bit easier
7790s yeah this is one of the easier cases I
7793s guess yeah but with biodome we were
7795s mixing yeah rollers so it's the story
7797s will be just can be a bit crazier
7800s because of that but I usually try to
7803s plan like for a year the areas that I
7807s would like to explore Brawlers but
7809s sometimes we have to switch because this
7811s is a very organic process like even if I
7814s plan okay every update we're gonna have
7816s those Brawlers

7821s gonna have in September and then I have
7823s one brawler that it's like um I don't
7825s know I almost say too much I have a
7828s brawler there is a cactus and then we
7830s already have I was planning to do

7837s Halloween so then I have to change the
7839s other thing because of those
7841s coincidences and even planning mechanics
7844s like we did we were trying to aim for
7846s some type type of mechanics and at the
7849s end of the meeting I was with Frank and

7853s then when they start to sketch the idea

7913s Sam you know which is part of Bell's
7915s Trio so we've already done we've already
7917s done a main theme that that was meant to
7919s accommodate Bell and then we introduced
7922s Sam we need to revisit this Trio this I
7924s mean this theme but we want to spice it
7926s up right so we need to always like come
7928s up with a new thing uh like a new
7931s um inspiration or just a new twist that
7934s kind of spices things up yeah so yeah
7936s that's part of the challenge but it's
7938s very organic like we just talked with
7940s the team you know and particularly like
7943s fernan and I that's that's mostly yeah

9237s not like they're being angry on social
9239s media or anything like it's really
9241s really nice and we got really cool

9284s highlight for us and uh to see them and
