I will just leave a link to this beginner's guide to modding, as it has a list of different terms like this, including many others than the ones mentioned here. Super handy when you start getting into modding and are learning what everyone means. :)

If you place a growable in the correct zone properly on tiles, then it will stay and act like it had spawned automatically, even without other mods. But if there is no zoning underneath, or the wrong zoning, or you move the building a little too far off the tiles, then it will despawn. It will also level up and change appearance like any regular growable.
Plop The Growables lets growables ignore the need for zoning and makes them act like historical buildings. The mod also lets you place buildings from district specialisations outside the correct districts - so you could have self-sustaining houses from Green Cities mixed in with regular houses no problem. (note that PTG has several settings so you can customize how growables behave)
Historical buildings can still level up, but their appearance always stays the same, so you could have the level 1 look at level 5 yes. If they get hit by a disaster, they can't be rebuilt either.
If a growable is given settings with Ploppable RICO, it can still spawn randomly in a zone. When it does this, it behaves like a RICO building though, and is locked to its level and won't despawn if the zoing under it is removed.
Growables can also be Ploppable RICO buildings, but not all Ploppable RICO buildings are growables. Ploppable RICO was originally made to make larger buildings act like growables, as growables can only be 4x4 tiles large. So the mod changed how larger buildings (usually unique buildings or parks) behave making them work similarly to growables.
For easy control of buildings in districts, I recommend the Building Themes mod. It lets you create district themes in game, while you're building your city, it works with an easy list you just check boxes for, it has previews of the buildings and you can add vanilla buildings to a theme. It is much more flexible than the styles that come with the game.

Originally posted by Luap: I don't mean to hijack this thread but I am in a similar state of confusion. This seems like a great explanation, however, I am still confused.
First off with neither PTG or RICO I am able to plop down an asset with "Find It" all by itself. My understanding is that if it is an in game asset placed in the proper RICO zone then it would then start acting like any other asset that grew in that same spot correct? Your description of ploppable says they never level up?
If I want it to stay as the exact building I chose to place then I can set it as historical. I know that this locks the building and it is said that it stops it from leveling up...does that mean that it stops the appearance from changing or that it will never change the actual level of the unit? For instance can I have a level 5 home with the appearance of a level 1 home?
If I have a RICO supported asset that i subscribe to...will it automatically start showing up in my growable areas? Would a non RICO asset show up in growables?
Plop the growables as I understand it doesn't really do anything that physically allows you to plop growables as that seems to already be handled by Find it? What it does do is give an option to auto set historical. Wouldn't that mean my entire city would be stuck at lvl1 homes in zoned areas?
What I would like to be able to do is allow normal zoning in much of my city but for certain areas I would like to limit say like a subdivision to a certain style or group of assets. I know I can set a district to a certain style but I do not know if I can create a style and pick some vanilla assets or workshop assets to put in it. If a workshop asset I like is a lvl2 house...I still want it to be able to level up to lvl 5 but remain looking like the lvl2. I would also like to be able to drop some workshop assets that may be larger than 4x4.
I already have "find it" and "move it" but I can not for the life of me figure out which of these two (RICO/PLG) I need or don't need.
