Patch day means some mods are likely to break, meaning your city won't load/work like it usually does. But don't worry, most mods update pretty quickly or can safely be removed, so you are unlikely to lose your city.

Just don't panic and if you do open your save, don't save over the file - save as a new file instead just to be safe.

If you don't use any mods from the workshop or have been through patches before you likely know the drill and this post won't really be useful for you. It's intended to help players who aren't used to mods and patches through the update as smoothly as possible. If this is still all new to you and you have questions feel free to ask and I’ll answer them as best as I can.

If you play with a lot of mods
  • Don’t open your city or cities yet, but wait until most major mods are updated, so nothing breaks.
  • Keep an eye on this post and its links so you know which mods are updated.
  • Disable all mods and start a new city (make sure not to save over your other city!) if you want to check out the new features. This can easily be done by adding the launch option “-noWorkshop” (without the quotation marks)
  • Even if you have broken mods you might still be able to load your city, but depending on the mods things might be messy. If you do load without those mods, make sure to save as a new file just in case!

Will I be able to continue my old city? Most likely yes, but it might be a few days depending on what mods you use. I'll help you figure out when you can safely start your city again.

Will ‘insert mod’ be updated? Most likely yes - a lot of our awesome modders are working hard to get everything up and running again. But some mods will need larger fixes and as modders only have their free time, we might wait a while for some of them. Now is a great time to tell them how much we appreciate their work!

And if there are already several comments mentioning the mod is broken, you don't need to comment. The modder knows and will update when they can.

Which mods do I absolutely need to load my city? I don't have a complete list, but generally mods that add a network like Network Extensions 2, More Train Tracks, Metro Overhaul Mod, One Way Train Tracks and Extra Train Station Tracks are needed to load a city once you have used the networks they add in your city. If any of these are broken you'll have to wait for them to be fixed to load your city again. 81 tiles is another mod you'll need to wait for to be updated if you have used it.

Then there are mods like Traffic Manager: President Edition, any mod that changes population numbers (like Realistic Population and Consumption), Ploppable RICO and Plop the Growables, which you can load your city without, but it's not a good idea as your city will be chaotic at best and fall apart at worst.

A good way to determine how much you need a mod is to think of what it does. If it makes some big changes to how things work in game, removing it will cause problems. If it's something that makes things more convenient for you but doesn't really change how things function once in your city, it isn't a big deal to get rid of.

What about Metro Overhaul Mod The creators of MOM have confirmed that the mod will be updated to work with Sunset Harbor. If you use this mod in your city, you will still need it after the update. If you would like to remove the mod at any time, then follow the instruction in the mod's description. If you'd like to know what's happening with the mod in the future, check out this message from BadPeanut: https://twitter.com/CS_badpeanut/status/1240746577456771073

Still having issues? You might have mods that broke before this patch - maybe last patch or long before that. I recommend checking out this list of broken and abandoned mods[docs.google.com] to get rid of any old ones you still have. It's a constant work in progress, so it may not be a complete list, but it's a great place to start. See the tab at the bottom on how to use.

Having errors? Many errors are very generic and don't give much clue as to the problem. Please don't post long errors in comments. Instead just describe when the error happens (what you were doing at the time it appeared) and include your log file. This guide explains where to find it and suggests different places you can upload it to, since you can't attach a file here.

No, you can make a backup of the save like that. I suggest moving it out of the savegames folder and keeping it somewhere else. Then you can open the save and see how things are and if something breaks, you have the backup to use.

The 25th will have a dev diary detailing all the goodies we get in the free patch, but for now yesterdays dev diary confirmed a few things that will be in the free patch:

The free part of this DLC, includes a majorly overhauled metro system. You can now adjust the height of metro tracks, which means tracks and stations can be underground, street level, or even above ground on elevated platforms! Included in the free content update are also the new Healthcare facilities. After building them, you may notice more children being born in the city and some citizens living slightly longer than others.

Any that were made as metro vehicles will be useable with Sunset Harbor without mods. Any that are trains, which MOM converts to metro will need a mod to be used with the new metro in Sunset Harbor, or would need to be remade as metro vehicles. We will just have to see what options we will have once the DLC releases and mods update or are made for it. :)

Not any good ones. You can disable automatic updates and switch Steam in offline mode - but Steam offline mode disables the workshop, so if you're doing it to keep a modded city, then it won't work. Instead of offline mode, you CAN disconnect the internet before starting the game, which should work (I haven't tested it since before the launcher), but it's an awkward solution.

Thanks to the modding beta we tend to not have long with broken mods though, so personally I wouldn't bother. I play heavily modded with ~100 mods and ~3000 assets and the last few patches I've been able to jump into my cities again after a couple of days. The modders are doing an awesome job preparing for patches and updating mods quick.

I am definitely looking forward to the next DLC and the Creator's Pack for "Modern Japan". I am going to create my Little Tokyo!

Hopefully it won't even take that long. The last 2 patches it was a couple of days before we could play heavily modded cities again. :) I will update this post after release, so you can always check this to see if your mods have been updated and you can get back to building. :)

If you do end up having problems, I and others in the community can help figure out what the problem is. The important thing is just to never save over your savegame file. And I would recommend making a copy of it to store somewhere on your computer as a backup. It never hurts to have a backup just in case. :)
