First let's see if it's related to workshop content. In Steam add the launch options -noWorkshop and -disableMods

Then try to start a new game. If it works, then it's related to mods in some way. If you're still having problems, then you'll want to post on the official support forums:

If it's fine with the launch options, then we need to find the mod(s) causing problems. Remove the launch options again and check all your mods against this list of known broken mods:

Test again if you have mods that are known to be broken or if you have some mods that are incompatible. Maybe sorting those will do the trick.
Lastly, if that doesn't help either, we'll need to have a look at your output log (player.log on Mac and Linux). This guide explains where to find it and has some suggestions for where to upload the log, since we can't attach files here on Steam. :)
