I'm a returning player, I played a bit during 2019 but I didn't get too far, I considered the game to be kinda unfair, specially with later behemoths. I like to consider myself a veteran in Monster Hunter games but for some reason Dauntless kicked my ass so bad, behemoths could just drop 80% of my health in a single attack, having only 5 healing flasks meant most difficult hunts my team would be downed most of the time.
Flashforward to 2022, I decide to give Dauntless another go and after some rough couple of hours getting used to everything new, I realize I'm extremely hooked to the game, and I'd like to enumerate the things I enjoy in this new version of the game.
- Difficulty: I feel the game has toned down the difficulty quite a bit, from being able to unlock healing flask upgrades to carry more and increase their healing, to being able to have more than 4 people fighting a single behemoth in hunting grounds, to omnicells helping a ton (yeah, I use iceborne omnicell, I know there are better meta ones but I feel it's such a nice noob-friendly starter omnicell that can keep you alive and save your flasks) and specially restocking inside hunting grounds.
- Excuse to grind: I know this will probably be a divisive opinion, but I do love the reforging system, it basically gives you an incentive to just keep slaying behemoths. I really love Monster Hunter, but once you get all the sets you want, you eventually reach a point of "I'm just doing quests to increase my HR number and flex", I like the passive bonuses you get from reforging and you also get the flexing factor once you start reforging past 10, not to mention it also keeps lower level hunting grounds and easy escalations populated.
- Hunting grounds: The first hours I came back to the game I just tried to stay as much as possible inside hunting grounds, I really love the idea of killing a behemoth and immediately hunt down the next one, specially with a squad of randoms all following each other. Monster Hunter tried this in the past but I didn't like how it was executed there, since you wouldn't get many rewards from going to open areas and just kill stuff randomly, so you were basically forced to be doing quests all the time.
