s suggestive thank you for showing up
s today and welcome to my guest today so
s who are you guys you want to introduce
s yourself tell us a little bit what you
s do in that by daily yeah my name is
s Michelle FFA I'm the composer the music
s we brought a little surprise today and
s we'll explain a little bit later what's
s that all about with you and David Bowie
s Bowie send you some designer actually
s I'm just on the design here on the by
s daylight awesome so uh we have a sound
s panel that is planned a little bit later
s but for now we have a few announcements
s before so this is where I talk by myself
s for like five minutes
s bear with me first announcement we are
s lunching officially the fog whisperer
s program tomorrow so keep an eye on
s social media for people broadcasters who
s are interested to join us in the fog
s whisperer program so that's cool right
s it is currently this team Awards you can
s you can vote for you know your favorite
s game or your favorite game or maybe your
s favorite game until
s till November 27 so uh maybe think about
s that by daylight then then I don't know
s if you guys know but it's been super
s cold in Montreal today we went down to
s what - 26 degrees Celsius with wind
s chills - a thousand I think - a thousand
s it was uh it is very very cold in
s Montreal you guys might have seen
s something on their social media
s yesterday you might want to know a
s little bit more about that do we have
s anything to complete what we showed
s yesterday or to add to
s okay so wait wait you guys see that
s problem dude do you want to see it again
s I think I think we want to see it again
s right
s all right um we're not gonna come in on
s this we're gonna let you guys go nuts so
s have fun with this it's all you get
s today
s well a part friend you know you amazing
s guys anyways going with with this what
s are we doing that next week next week is
s gonna be the PTB
s coming up so you guys are gonna be able
s to see more but for now just think about
s what you saw today all right and early
s December is six of December we are at
s the Game Awards so Matt is gonna be on
s the big scene and he's gonna talk about
s cool stuff for DVD so that was all for
s the announcements now we can go back to
s you guys you guys introduce yourself a
s little bit but so you are a music
s composer yes and you're doing well
s senior sound design I do do doing the
s game audio in the game alright so how
s did you end up working on DVD for
s example like how is a musician end up
s working on a video game actually you
s have to love being a game in the first
s place
s that's kind of you know first things you
s have to love video games period and how
s we met maybe yeah yeah we had a long
s time ago yeah we worked on another game
s and
s is very different from that by daylight
s was kind of very action-oriented
s orchestral stuff more for kids yeah
s morning for kids so FIDIC to take a big
s leap of faith but you knew I was you
s know yeah anyone was able to do so very
s grungy stuff so wait so you went from
s kids games to dead by daily yeah not
s right away but a few years after
s afterwards well dude it's we have some
s mechanics that we have we need a
s composer that understand how it works
s what is the limitation what is a loop
s what is layers and so that's something
s in common between the two games and in
s the first games will we work one it was
s really challenging on tyke a tech side
s and actually it did the work really well
s and challenge for that but that game is
s that it was something flying I don't
s know we'll just say that for that it's
s something flying and that was going into
s a lot of different countries so we had
s to have like a basic track for every
s country with a general style but on top
s of the DOS track we have like music
s going on top of it like to add a flavor
s like in China flavor big flavor there so
s we have the same kind of mechanics in
s the in our game in that daylight so by
s example for the proximity yeah many
s layers and these music is a big part of
s how the gameplay goes down
s for example chase music or heartbeat I
s know how is a music playing yes okay we
s have to drive it by States or the
s survivor States or by if the exit is
s really a
s - and it's a old kind of situation drive
s the music so it's a lot of yeah music
s the the biggest challenge I think for
s that buyer was the proximity music
s because we only have like a window of 20
s seconds of every music so each time we
s we we have the music is giving an
s indication so it's very our time it's
s very short so it's very very challenging
s to have like a only 2025 second loop and
s it's not boring mm-hmm that's the
s biggest challenge I think
s and for your part the mechanics is that
s it can change very rapidly with the
s heartbeat heartbeat and stuff like that
s maybe you can actually it was a lot of
s experimentation at the beginning we
s start with like by example with four
s layers we cut someone took me three
s because the feedback is was more clear
s for a player like it far away close and
s really close and actually and here but
s but yeah we change the the fourth layer
s with the the chase because we and it was
s the part of the prototype oh now we can
s maybe do a chase and how the chase work
s is on half and or is it a layer or what
s is the rules for the chase and the chase
s was almost like a like a brand new piece
s of music yes compared to zip and for me
s I said to Michelle I want that I want
s that the Chase is a adding stuff on over
s the proximity music not a different
s piece of music and it was like okay but
s the layer three was all really something
s I so he said okay what can I do now to
s add that little so so we're gonna come
s back to the chase music but if we if we
s go through the process to create for
s example the lobby music because we we
s had lobby music changes for you know
s chapters the clown music guys don't you
s miss it
s and I'm making jokes because you
s you know we discussed about it a little
s bit it was uh it was bugged or forget
s forgotten and then we had the change the
s Tom music food for three months yeah I
s was in the game so people are actually
s missing the the original music so it was
s back and then we absolutely a new one so
s uh what's what's the process to create
s the just a lobby music and all the
s variants first off it's very different
s from other games and I think it's fair
s the echo came up with this idea is that
s in the lobby music when you change to
s survivor and killer the music change
s accordingly and afterwards we did a lot
s of new music for new characters and so
s the the challenge was to have like
s something that is working perfectly with
s every track so that could change the
s music if you're a killer of survivor and
s it seamlessly you know you don't feel it
s as but it's of course the killer is kind
s of more guitar-oriented big distortions
s and the survival part with all acoustic
s guitars and bass I can't fire guitar
s yeah do we have any video I think from
s the first time you did the riff for the
s that was not for too loud okay sorry no
s it's not for the lobby was for Danny
s yeah yeah I think it's yes sometimes we
s don't have the same famous because when
s you put it in the game it has a like a
s technical name yeah entity brain
s [Music]
s [Music]
s [Music]
s yeah I love the action in here yeah it's
s funny because for that that piece of
s music can't ask me can you record
s yourself a little bit for the team so
s they know what you're doing in the
s studio
s yes I said sure well you know I've
s attract to do today and that actually
s was the first stake
s and it went well so I that's what I
s sense and that's the exact piece that's
s in there the game right now but of
s course with all those who stick
s instrument for that body light
s everything is the tune solo it's crazy
s and I'm doing you know things that you
s shouldn't do to an instrument for
s example I would I would add like a
s 4-string bass for new musicians I out
s there and I would put like a a B string
s on a 4-string bass and detune the B
s string all the way down to a flat so in
s the Muny music that's that's what I'm
s playing being with a pick a flat you
s know it's a super little dub you know
s that's how I got the the the sound of
s the hobby music and you were telling me
s when we met earlier that you were
s presenting your music and then you've
s been told
s still to light what does that mean oh
s yeah something especially at first when
s I when I was scoring the music some time
s with no I was leaning like something
s would be winning something you know but
s then the producer cut mm no no it has to
s be always down always negative there you
s know is there's a happy world there's no
s escape
s what do you think you're dead you're not
s you know yeah it's like a little sad
s they're adding sadness and the music
s especially in the lobby especially in
s the lobby so like you managed to make
s sleigh bells yeah a dark music or yeah I
s do believe that we have it it's the
s winter theme and it winter a special
s event right no we don't have it we don't
s have it you don't have it my god I
s thought I thought okay okay I thought I
s thought in the list anyways so yeah you
s managed to make sleigh bells
s dark music yeah actually again again I
s did tune everything either real real
s sleigh bell but I put in the sampler and
s I did you in solo when I put some
s distortion on it and big you know church
s bell so again with distortion and what
s do you get for direction when they ask
s you okay we need you know for the the
s curtain called chapter for the clown for
s example what do you have for the
s direction from them actually in the
s process I I receive a I give a first
s feedback to Michel so we can start but I
s had to you can start but I don't want to
s limit him too much we do data at that I
s know that it can create really well so
s but it needs some direction so at the
s only thing I I try to to do to show him
s it's a picture or something about the
s team if I got a picture that's that's
s all I yeah and how about the barbecue
s event oh we had a barbecue and was
s really funny because something I don't
s have a picture to show yeah I have to
s describe if I remember correctly your
s only instruction was you know barbecue
s yeah barbecue and I said no it's a
s special event it's kind of a barbecue
s event okay we try to put some words on
s the what it does summer event and it was
s funny actually yeah some ribbon yeah
s actually I sampled my my real barbecue
s and you did actually real bodies here at
s real if you go back and listen to the
s summer event this one now everyone wants
s to know what we're grilling at the time
s my feet
s [Laughter]
s [Music]
s [Music]
s [Music]
s [Music]
s all right so hey we're back yeah first
s far before that piece of music we didn't
s hear it but if I remember correctly you
s asked me also to have like a Western
s kind of flavor in there but not no you
s know not funny kind of funny kind of you
s know file type thing you break it in
s because we I was looking for a style of
s music to describe what side we are using
s and I was like okay I don't know what
s could fit for barbeque as is so and you
s bring it like a test yeah I mean the
s first I think the first one was Western
s oh we try something I like big more you
s Jamaican style too but it didn't work
s yeah Jamaican spaghetti western yeah
s together I wish I heard that yeah the
s process is quite it's quite interesting
s because it's you know it's a it's a
s teamwork effort because sometimes I can
s oh I have an idea about something and I
s I send it to him oh yeah like it I like
s that sound
s so we emphases on more on something and
s then we start from there and then
s without more weight
s yes so it's pretty awesome to do what
s would you say is your biggest challenge
s when you when it comes to creating the
s music for that like a life I didn't mean
s the lovely music or the music in general
s everybody and it was the proximity for
s surely proximity because we had a lot of
s music for proximity and not really a lot
s of reference actually we had at that
s time we did not almost any picture of
s the characters and you know we only knew
s that the music would give you know clues
s to today
s and the tension for me it was really
s important to give attention constant
s attention to the player and it was no
s blank or something so we we can fill
s that stressed the stress and the the
s yeah and the thing I'm always thinking
s about when I'm scoring for for a game is
s that I always put myself in the player
s chair well you actually played that yeah
s yeah I was very lucky because since I
s was in the project from from early on I
s was able to come here to play you know
s the what you call them prototype
s prototype and to see the mechanics and
s then you go back to the studio it's much
s easier because my my head is full of
s images and mechanics how it works but
s for a proximity we didn't have that yet
s so yeah yes and then I went to the
s studio to I remembered what that's right
s the first lobby music we did that the
s original one actually we did the killer
s and then the survivor and for the
s neutral one the introduction we didn't
s know what kind of instrument piano and
s string so I went to the studio and we
s tried different kind of pianos maybe you
s guys want to see this to do I know we
s had a few image yes we where the music
s happens yeah it's too bad I wanted to
s show you a clip but you know if if you
s guys like the that which today maybe
s what time we can do a twitch right there
s in this to you well we can just probably
s manage something yes absolutely that
s would be awesome so I can show you
s really comforting the cow just
s confortable oh yeah that's my main man
s let's set water right yeah of course
s yeah that's the guitar there yes so wait
s so do you play every single instrument
s that we see there yeah I'm playing yeah
s my formation is it
s classical percussion but always play
s drums since I'm like 70 years old and
s come from a family where is that where
s the music was you know my father is a
s choir director so we have like accordion
s recorders piano you know drums that only
s I always play all these instruments
s since I'm very young so it's you know I
s I don't think about it and the way I
s create most of the time is when I need a
s different style I pick up a different
s instrument and what the music comes out
s it's different if I play piano the same
s the same music on different instrument
s it's gonna give it different
s yeah but more like yeah for inspiration
s okay if I if I'm on the piano something
s would come out that would not come on
s and guitar or bass i play percussion
s it's something else also so I mix and
s match everything all the time and for
s that by daylight we have a lot of
s organic music I use samples of course
s but I would say like 80% is organic
s phase really gets our real percussions
s and and you all true also two
s distortions and and and you know the
s wrong string and all the the things that
s you changed oh yeah changing yeah yeah
s so you were saying you actually recorded
s your barbeque do you use like you know
s like me Kolkata I don't know in English
s like contact mics know I sound samples
s or do you do you just record instruments
s no no I use you know I use a good stereo
s microphone they put it over not over
s because it wouldn't melt or debarred on
s the side a little bit
s and then I just started barbecues was
s the last recording yeah last recording
s for it was my cell phone so is there
s anything else that's like unusual in the
s music that you can say like oh yeah
s that's barbecue sound or this is you
s know
s well my labels and this is that you use
s for DVD yeah well you can hear it it's
s it's pretty obvious maybe not in the
s maybe not like the normal person yeah
s but they do if you
s pay attention for example if you paid
s that just like a summer music and listen
s to it again at like three quarters you
s know you're like that's a hockey yeah in
s the summer yeah it's beautiful we had a
s lot a lot and a lot of the men for you
s actually playing the theme on the guitar
s here oh I can but it's it's not I don't
s know how the bikes are gonna deal with
s this
s open up they're not whoops but it's not
s in the right zone that's normal don't
s also you you would have to distort
s everything can you hear something
s [Music]
s [Music]
s argue it they like more and and the same
s speed
s [Music]
s but I play like order but I do you
s detune everything yeah so right now this
s one was - yeah you're are you detuning
s it for us
s same thing for the piano there are
s general track yeah it's like I said to
s him it's not sad enough that was like
s country I think it's because there was
s not enough detuning right yeah actually
s I would put the 7 string guitar on the 6
s string guitar so that that one here it's
s much much bigger so I can detune it
s lower and it's still sound good if you
s go back to the main lobby team that's
s what I did with all the guitars I use
s like a classical guitar acoustic guitar
s electric guitar
s everything is mix and match and there
s are layers
s yeah well gel together they all play
s together and yeah and so if if we go
s back to game play music because you were
s saying you were talking about the
s proximity music but a lot of people are
s asking about chase music actually and
s the actual chase music - are we ever
s gonna see another cheese music other
s type of cheese music actually we have
s six variation of the proximity music
s each variation as his own chase music so
s when you came out of the proximity
s radius if there is a random and then
s when you come back it's a new music a
s new variations playing so actually all
s killers have the same six variation but
s not for our doing our winner is own
s music system and it was really fun to do
s and it was really honored to have John
s Carpenter validate our work and you can
s be proud
s oh yeah was really fun yeah I think he
s was it was at
s about you know I was able to reproduce
s the exact sound you know what the kind
s of
s ding-ding-ding-ding so for the time I'm
s gonna I'm gonna go over this and so a
s lot of people love the fact that Meyers
s has his own music and they're asking for
s their own music theme for each killer is
s that something that you know you you you
s think would be possible or it's possible
s but depends of the if it's a licensed
s killer we can't do what we want
s sometimes like for Freddie it was not it
s was no way because I don't have all the
s reason but it was no it was so no sir it
s for many reasons so let's let's take out
s the license or yeah the idea is that
s people love that Myers has a specific
s music Mira so could we make a music for
s nurse or music for hunters it's a long
s process to do that kind of music as a
s mechanics also I think right yeah
s actually it could if it's possible yes
s yes it's possible
s so now we have to ask Mathieu is it plan
s no it's not everything is possible but
s it's possible but it's not a plan right
s now that we actually do that then I'm
s gonna go to hear a lot of people are
s asking for buying the soundtrack so
s we're gonna we're gonna answer that
s question right away you can buy it on
s you know it's on Steam yeah right now
s and I think they're working on it too to
s make it too broad but right now I think
s it's only on Steam and I'm not sure if
s you can only buy the soundtrack I think
s you can only buy the soundtrack
s if not I think you have to buy the baby
s the entire game yeah yeah
s plus the soundtrack as a DLC a but I
s think it's possible to buy only the
s soundtrack things without to check it
s out
s you send me the link for for you guys
s alright so um if we're going back to
s this guitar right here yeah the idea for
s this guitar behind this guitar but first
s of all I'm a little geek so I just like
s those kind of thing pics with you know
s characters on it and guitars with
s characters on it and I just loved it and
s I thought you know since the game is out
s I had so many fans wrote to me directly
s on my website you can you can go and
s write to me about the music and asking
s asking question about the music and all
s that and also on YouTube there's a lot
s of comments we're gonna put your your
s links also a few guys can awesome so I
s thought I I wanted to give something
s back to the community so I thought okay
s let's let's do it that by day like
s guitar and give it away to the community
s so that's the idea beyond that we that's
s we thought yeah the beginning of the
s week we just don't know yet our cow
s we're gonna give it to you guys but it's
s for you
s that's for sure somebody we don't money
s is gonna have that guitar we don't know
s how it's gonna happen yeah but it will
s happen and it's gonna be available for
s for the community and on top of it will
s will have the all the production team
s sign it so it's gonna be signed so it's
s gonna be one of a kind you're in the
s community it's a really neat art that's
s a real guitar you know it's not a super
s expensive guitar but it plays well and
s the for you did you choose that we can
s yeah I use it for what we're doing right
s now that we can't not that about can you
s can you confirm that this is your
s website yeah you guys can go and check
s out his website also but yeah right now
s it's not sign right away
s Matt's on vacation so we're gonna I'll
s just wait until he's back to make sure
s that we have Matt's signature
s listen you guys I would I would keep you
s longer but this is this is Freddie Mazda
s of the stream right now I'll go over the
s announcements and if you guys have more
s questions for forehead and Michelle
s don't hesitate to send us Senate our way
s and maybe we can do this again sometime
s absolutely that would be awesome maybe
s from the studio this time yeah with
s actual you know actual music going on
s and I will not be part of that I can
s sing of them if you want alright guys
s going over the announcement again fog
s whisperers we are launching the program
s fully tomorrow steam Awards are going in
s on right now don't forget about us dead
s by daylight that's the name we show you
s something that we're not gonna show you
s again so I hope you had a good look ptb
s next week and Game Awards on December it
s is six Matt's is gonna be over there
s talking to you guys that's awesome
s so thank you so so much for for showing
s up and and coming meeting this community
s and I hope you guys had fun I don't have
s a word of the day I think it would be
s just that it needs more cowbell
s oh yeah word of the day it needs more
s cowbell bye guys
