As long as there's a shooting range and Management's office, I'll be happy.

There won't be.

BUT we may just have some tasty news in that direction Soon™. :>

I can give a quick TL;DR:

  • Update is on experimental branch right now, goes live on main branch on Jan 30th

  • Focus is on perks and the space rig, along with some skins stuff

  • Perks are now catagorized as "active" or "passive". Dwarves start with one slot for each, and (with upgrades) can ultimately have 3 passive and 2 active perks at once. Passive perks are just perks as we currently know them - equip them, and they're on 24/7. Active perks are contextual activated abilities with cooldowns and/or limited uses. Ex: Iron Will is a one-time use, but you choose to activate it or not when downed, and is slightly stronger than before. Another active perk shown is Beastmaster, allowing you to target and tame up to one glyphid grunt as an ally. Others have been added and old ones have been tweaked, with the goal being to give players more meaningful choices

  • The space rig has been reorganized somewhat, with terminals in more meaningful places rather than just boring rows of them. This is only the first step of space rig changes, so we can expect more in the future. There's also some sort of new terminal in the center, by the ladder up to the drop pod. Unclear what it's for yet

  • The weapon-skin-merging bug is now a feature. Skins are divided into Frameworks and Paintjobs, the former changing the mesh of a weapon and the latter changing the colors/pattern of it

  • Looking to the future, Update 29 will be focused on the new player experience, as well as introducing a logbook with useful in-game info. Plus, a lot of minor bugfixes and such in preparation for DRG's official release

That's the gist of it as far as I understand! I'm sure a lot more info will come to light as people poke around on the experimental branch today (Also, if I missed anything super important, or misspoke somewhere, someone let me know!)

The "new terminal" in the center is the Mission Selection Terminal - it's been moved to a more central position. The model is nowhere near done though, so it'll look a bit janky hackjob until next update.

How would limited-use perks work in Deep Dives? For example, if Iron Will can only be activated once, is that once per stage, or once for the entire dive?

It's all per stage.

So from five perk slots to four. Not feeling too perky.

That is not the case. As we say in the post, you unlock the fifth one by leveling and Promoting the Dwarf.

No shooting range? Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Did we not kill enough bulk detonators or harvest enough minerals for you? Or did you mean just no Management's Office. Heh.

Looking forward to seeing what the "tasty news" might be then. :)

On the other hand I get the sense the Space Rig has a flag for no weapons, so even if a shooting range were put up, can't make an exclusion for the flag...

All I can say at this point is that according to our current plans, there will not be a Shooting Range...on the Space Rig. Extrapolate from that what you will... :>

I have seen talk about OC changes but I don't recall a single change on them since they launched. I'm not even saying they're bad devs, just that given this very recent thing that is arguably similar there is little reason to believe we will see differing results. But it's possible I've missed the patch notes.

Fixing game breaking bugs is important but isn't the same things as balancing new features to get them to a solid place.

I understand your frustration with OCs and weapons not being fully balanced yet, it frustrates me as well as I've been tweaking these things for over a year now since Update 19.

We will get there eventually and I hope to do some more OC and weapon balancing for Update 29, assuming the perk system does not catch fire. Balancing DRG has been, and will continue to be, an ongoing process while new systems are being implemented.
And yes, disagreement is neither an attack nor an insult. Feedback is always welcome. Rock and Stone!
