I mean, i never even heard of this game before up until 2 days ago, when a buddy of mine told me of 'a cool new game' he found to play during quarantine.

Looked it up, bought it yesterday and GODDAMN AM I HAVING A BLAST. The humour is spot on, the main hub is cool, the fact that you can get drunk, start missions and you'll still be drunk in the mission is a hilarious little quirk that i have never seen done in any game before. The randomised dungeons are really cool and the classes have nice quirks and customisation options.

And hell, it turns out this game has been around since 2018.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN THESE PAST 2 YEARS? This is honestly the first game in YEARS where i feel like i have a reason to take a break from LoL just to sink in tons of time.

Why is there seemingly no advertisement for a game as awesome as this?

"failed miserably" refers to their advertisement and marketing, not the game itself.

The initial ads didn't bring enough people to make hype for it or make it to mainstream. Then the game kept on failing at keeping people hooked to it even after the first free weekend. And still, to this day, it's struggling to maintain its playerbase. I like DRG and still playing it several times a week, but that doesn't make me say or think that DRG is a successful project or has became a staple in certain genre. It's still developing.

I'm not really sure how you're interpreting that data, but a drop in users after a free weekend is absolutely expected for any game, especially in Early Access. Player count will also rise at each update and then flatten out, and the numbers are consistently stable. In comparison, our Discord has quadrupled in users over the last year - and we're very happy with the growth we're seeing over all the lines. We're not spending a lot on marketing, because we'd rather focus on making a great game for the community, and that's marketing the game for us, allowing us to keep pushing great updates past 1.0.

Also, Average player count gets affected directly by people actually playing it while Discord is just one time thing. I joined, but only used once or twice for Miner Union and see changes in Experimental. But still, I'm contributing to the number on Discord. It's like Unique DL and Total DL on Nexus mods. Total DL is certainly an indicator, but the actual number on how many people have downloaded the mod is Unique DL. You can't talk how popular it is just based on users on Discord server. Also, I'm not denying that you guys are spending more money on developing than marketing. It's just that the first, initial ads and marketing failed to build hype or a community to spread info. That, probably everyone who bought DRG early knows.

It's definitely usable as a metric on growth/popularity - as you said, you've used Discord yourself, and you are playing it. You might not be the optimal user, but you are a user. Our potential player base is only growing and the player count is very stable for a game in Early Access. We're very happy with the direction we're going.

I don't agree that the marketing failed - it did exactly what it was supposed to; created a base of users, contributing with valuable feedback letting us shape the game. We're a small team, working fast on updates, and it's been a success since launch. We've built a team of talented people, and we work in a low-stress environment building a successful game that we love playing ourselves... and we're not done. :D
