363s yet another Community Spotlight here and
367s my name is Jones working for us lead
370s game designer here and we've got Toby
372s with us early in the morning from Down

377s hello he's he's aware at least
381s and somewhat today we have
384s with us Jimmy and Sheamus from Dad speed
388s and we also have a couple of their staff
390s and volunteers with Earth shmuel and
394s armored Stone as well
396s uh
401s you wanna you wanna just introduce
403s yourselves and
406s sure yeah I can go
408s I'll go yeah I'm uh Jimmy uh one of the
411s founders here at uh dad speed and uh you
415s know we started about three years back
418s I can uh just saw an idea and an
420s opportunity to really push that economic
423s uh game style that we weren't really
426s seeing
427s and that's really how it started just uh
430s with one road to a neighbor
434s got Jeff as uh as we used to say in dad
437s speed one all roads lead to craftsmans
441s and that was the start of dad speed one
443s and as uh as Jimmy said we we started
446s this out because we wanted to have that
449s excellent Eco gameplay inside of an
452s economy-based community that favored
456s social interaction playing on the market
457s sharing of
459s um of of resources through a market
461s environment and persistent as well be
464s able to give players the ability to have
466s Creations long term
469s and we are now in season seven and we've
472s been running this uh for almost four
474s years uh in the dad speed seasons and in
477s season seven uh you know we maintain
479s that that Central dad speed ethos of
482s economy focused player driven gameplay
485s and bringing to the people the ability
487s to make their Creations in a market
489s economy with uh all other
493s uh players operating in a way that they
496s need you
498s meaning we have what's called a super
500s skill set here on Dad speed which means
502s we don't necessarily want you to be the
505s miner and the smelter in the same we
507s want you to have a skill and be good at
509s that skill but you have to sell your
512s products and services in that skill in
514s order for the next player beside you to
516s be able to push on their uh their craft
519s and so on and so forth throughout the
521s entire Tech Tree uh culminating in what
523s you see here on Dad speed
526s um and here we have in season seven as
529s you can see we we uh we had a nice
531s little lore aspect of a spaceship that
534s brought us
535s just switching over to the game view
537s here just soon okay sure
541s um yeah so we've got uh here in dad
544s speed we've got this lore the spaceship
546s idea that is what brought us in the
548s meteor destruction of season six to
549s season seven and from an admin and kind
553s of player and a season setup perspective
555s we just laid down this basic ship
558s a little receiving area to get you going
560s and then the rest of it is just the
562s general dad speed ethos and community
565s that starts it up player driven player
567s ran player managed
569s um every season is a completely
572s different experience but within that
573s same dad speed ethos that gives you that
576s long-term gameplay your ability to make
578s incredible Creations as I like to say a
581s lot is you know craft and enjoy and show
583s us your creations and the players here
585s in this community have absolutely
587s knocked it out of the park as they do
588s every season with seven and there are
590s some amazing Creations we hope to show
592s you today so I'll go ahead and pass it
594s off to a voice you've all heard many
597s many times before and uh who needs no
599s further introduction take it away Earth
601s hey thanks yeah so uh as these guys were
605s saying the admins I was actually looking
607s for a an Eco server and you guys know I
611s do you know video content for YouTube
614s but besides that just as a player I
618s wanted to find a server where it would
620s last a little bit longer than just you
623s know two three weeks uh and one that
626s also was kind of backed by you know good
628s administrators that wouldn't sort of
630s just drop the server after a while so
633s after playing a number of different
634s servers some that said long term some
637s that were short-term and so on I finally
639s wound up with these guys early on I
641s forget whether it was what season it was
644s either season one or season two but it
646s was writer season one yeah you're OG I
649s think it was right at the very beginning
650s there and I realized okay I've found a
653s little bit of a home because these guys
654s are dedicated to exactly what I'm after
657s you know uh good economy because uh you
661s know that can be a struggle when it's
663s player based there tends to be a
666s I'll say there tends to be kind of a you
668s win by conquering you know in the
671s economy in a lot of games but but Eco is
673s different I realize it has that that
675s collaborative nature uh that Sheamus was
678s just talking about so I I really kind of
681s felt that and joined in with these guys
683s so uh fortunately they they've let me
686s play an active role I'll say in a lot of
689s the governments a lot of times I'll pick
690s up uh I guess what you would call the
692s treasury in the government piece because
694s that's another unique thing obviously an
697s Eco it has this government and the law
700s system and this really Dynamic economics
703s so you know I've kind of picked up that
705s treasury role and uh just to kind of
708s foster you know that whole thing that
710s that they were talking about it seems to
713s me a lot of this long-term gameplay that
716s they've set up here where things persist
719s it's it realized right on that the
721s government the in-game government needed
724s to provide opportunities you know
727s opportunities for both existing players
729s people that have maybe been on the
731s server for three months and okay what do
733s I do now
734s as well as new players and that was a
737s little challenging so
738s you know being involved to help put
741s together a lot of these kind of uh I'll
745s say sort of ongoing kind of
746s opportunities for players has been a
749s large part of what I've I've done here
753s you know uh if we were to talk about
756s what some of those things are you know
758s the currency you know we try to look for
761s an opportunity try to look for an
762s opportunity at each point you know
765s anything that we do here in dad speed
768s with the government so even with the
770s currency and how that's injected uh you
774s know we kind of just start there and
775s make an opportunity for players so we
778s don't just for instance just distribute
780s wealth freely you kind of have to work
782s for it you kind of to earn it and and
785s there's been several things we've tried
786s to do to uh kind of do that they've all
789s seemed to work we've on a couple
791s different seasons we've had a public
794s gold mine so to get money a player goes
797s to the public gold mine they mine some
800s gold you know they're starting out they
801s put it in their cart they drag it back
803s to the mint and so that's actually what
806s we use to make the currency and so
808s they're able to get a little bit of
810s daily
811s income each day just from this
814s interaction which feeds then the
817s government to be able to print more
819s money
820s um and that's something again that
822s people can do as existing players that
825s have been here for a while and maybe
827s they're having a shortfall in cash but
830s also a new player you can jump right in
832s here and day one okay you know how that
834s people will say well how do I get
836s started how do I make some money and so
838s we'll we'll give them two or three
840s options we'll say hey well you can start
841s by mining the gold and taking it to the
844s mint uh this season seven we've done it
847s a little different it's paper
849s so you can buy paper from there are
853s several people that are selling paper
854s and anyone can make paper as long as
857s they have the table for it some people
859s make it more efficiently if they've got
861s the right the paper Milling skill but a
863s lot of people will sell paper and so you
866s can buy paper and then take it to the
868s net and sell it for an incredible profit
870s the government is very generous we have
872s a incredible return on your paper
874s contribution to the government and so
877s they earn their money that way
879s there's also this uh Transportation
883s concept that we put into play so just
886s moving goods from one place to another
889s and transporting those things
891s one of the there are a couple of server
895s rules it's kind of part of that ethos
897s that was being talked about where we
900s always kind of encourage that your Buy
903s price for goods which could always be a
906s little bit higher than what someone
907s else's sell prices
910s and so that Delta there it seems a
913s little odd that you would do that you
914s know you might think well I'm just going
915s to match the sale prices someone has but
917s by wanting to buy the goods you need for
921s your own production
922s at a slightly higher price than what the
925s producer is selling them for rates at
928s Delta in in that sort of buy and sell so
932s a transporter can just come in with
934s their cart their truck by hand whatever
936s it happens to be buy something from one
938s person transport it somewhere else and
941s sell it for a profit
942s and so seeing that sort of
945s Transportation mechanism we uh bit on
949s that hook and ran with it and so we
951s actually enhance that even farther by
954s having what we call a master transporter
957s and trucker rolls we've actually kind of
959s created a a tertiary skill that people
962s can pick up uh so if you're new to the
964s server and you're not sure what skill
967s you want then you're just kind of like
968s checking things out you become by
971s default in the demographics and the laws
973s that we have set up you become a master
976s transporter
977s and the government subsidizes an
980s additional percentage of that profit
982s that you make whenever you buy and sell
984s Goods so you know you sell something for
987s let's say you know a hundred coins the
990s government will subsidize an additional
991s 15 on top of that
993s so people have actually made an entire
996s living on the server just by moving
1000s goods and making sure that everyone's
1002s being supplied with the demand that they
1004s need and moving Goods around
1006s so if you take no skills you get this
1009s extra bonus uh if you take one skill
1013s then you get kind of half that if you've
1016s kind of taken the
1017s on This Server we kind of have a two
1019s skill limit so if you've kind of reached
1021s your limit on two skills then then you
1024s don't get any of that so it almost
1026s encourages people to take only one skill
1029s or maybe take no skills and feed in so
1032s again that's another new player
1033s opportunity or we've had some people
1035s interested in just wanting to transport
1039s and I know at least one person has said
1042s hey when version 10 drops and we get
1045s some votes I think the votes are coming
1047s right guys you know they're coming
1049s they're on their way yeah so some people
1051s said hey I just want to transport and
1055s use my boat to move Goods like a barge
1057s from one place to another that's what I
1058s want to do so we kind of got that base
1061s mechanism in place with just a couple
1063s simple laws that help promulgate that
1066s you know and these Transporters also get
1069s uh you know there's a base currency we
1072s obviously have but we have a secondary
1074s currency which is uh we call it land
1076s tokens
1078s and so when uh players players do leave
1081s the server eventually you know they've
1083s played for a few months they've decided
1085s to move on so when we reclaim their
1087s property we again turn that into an
1089s opportunity
1091s and that opportunity is uh
1093s they get sold not for the base currency
1096s but the properties get sold for these
1098s land tokens so there's very different
1100s there's different ways that players can
1102s earn land tokens and this transportation
1105s is one of them so in addition to getting
1107s base currency you get special land
1109s tokens and you're able to then trade
1112s those in and buy a property Like a
1114s downtown nice uh nice well-suited yeah
1116s location location you know they get a
1119s great property right in the middle of
1120s town
1121s so we use uh we use the currencies again
1124s to kind of create these additional
1126s gameplay of real estate going on so you
1129s know properties just aren't uh you know
1131s there for I'll say up for grabs it
1134s becomes part of the whole uh part of the
1136s whole cycle you know okay I'm doing I'm
1138s doing things now I'm earning the special
1140s token credit so I can go buy stuff you
1143s know so um yeah that's one example of
1147s opportunity another one I'll kind of
1150s mention here is uh what we've done
1152s around oil
1153s production
1155s so I know this this has seemed weird to
1157s a lot of people coming in but we have
1159s actually especially coming into a game
1161s called Eco but we've actually limited or
1165s made it very hard let's say a little bit
1168s difficult to use Renewable Power you
1171s know the wind turbines and the solar
1173s panels
1174s and part of that is that you know that's
1177s like free once you create that it's like
1179s free energy
1181s so instead what we've done here is make
1184s it so those things are actually very
1187s either restricted or very expensive to
1190s create
1192s and so what we've done instead is kind
1194s of promote then the combustion
1196s generators and the use of oil
1199s and even though there are some recipes
1201s you know epoxies Plastics different
1204s things that use the oil if you I think
1207s if you relied purely on consumption of
1210s oil by that or even the trucks you know
1213s excavators skid steers that use it uh
1217s you actually could have one person on
1219s the server you know crank out a couple
1221s thousand Barrels in a stockpile and that
1224s would last a long time you know without
1226s it but with this uh needing power from
1230s combustion generators we create an
1233s opportunity and I put out a government
1234s contract to build a power plant it has
1238s six seven eight combustion generators in
1240s it so that's kind of a build project for
1242s the community and then every day that
1246s power plant can easily burn up a couple
1249s hundred barrels of oil in in a given
1253s power plant we might have two or three
1254s of these on the server all kind of
1256s churning at once
1257s and so you know that means the oil
1260s producers have a reason to come in every
1262s couple days crank out some more barrels
1264s of oil and that also feeds that supply
1268s chain once again creates an a demand and
1270s an opportunity for uh you know people to
1274s smelt the iron to make the barrels the
1276s people to mine the iron sell it to the
1278s smelters and so on so it kind of creates
1280s these Supply chains just through uh
1283s limiting things so in general our laws
1287s seem a little odd to people because
1289s we'll say okay you know that's that's
1291s going to cost you ten thousand credits
1293s of some sort to uh make a wind turbine
1296s we're gonna tax you massively for each
1298s one you put out
1299s and so they it seems limited but it's
1302s actually creating Opportunity by kind of
1305s uh doing these kinds of things so uh I
1308s don't know those are a couple different
1309s ways that we create those opportunities
1312s yeah I I think it's it's quite exciting
1315s to see
1316s just how different servers are running
1319s into kind of they're they're treating
1321s the same problems very differently and
1323s having different approaches to solutions
1326s to these
1327s kind of things and and you know one is
1330s doing limitations versus others
1332s subsidizing or
1334s um just kind of varying
1336s varying how they're resolving it
1339s um
1341s but you guys were running
1343s quite abnormally long compared to most
1346s other servers how long is your your
1348s usual kind of cycle length
1354s yeah so that's
1356s um yeah it's just something that we we
1358s as we start up the server with a player
1361s driven approach an economy similar to
1363s our run length
1364s um so really it's the player base who
1365s kind of decides that for us I think this
1368s is probably our longest we're at just
1370s about a year but typically we're at
1372s least 200 days I believe but yeah it's
1374s just it's a lot for as long as people
1376s are creating and having a an enjoyable
1379s experience we keep it running and and uh
1382s yeah go ahead of Earth
1384s oh no that's exactly what I was going to
1386s say that you know it's kind of player
1388s driven and so you know this this
1390s opportunity thing I was talking about it
1393s we've also realized it's really
1394s important to
1396s uh have things that new players joining
1399s in two three four months into the server
1401s that they can be just as productive just
1403s as contributory to the economy and be
1406s able to do things as much as those
1408s people that were here in the first
1409s couple of weeks
1410s so you know a lot of these kind of
1412s things that we have in place allow them
1414s to be able to do that and I would say
1416s the lifeblood is there's a few people
1419s that started first couple weeks and you
1421s know are still in there still in there
1423s months later they're logging back in
1424s doing their thing you know still
1426s building but I would say the lifeblood
1428s is really the new players that keep
1431s joining this instance and keep adding to
1434s it and expanding on it uh so not making
1438s sure that we don't just limit that to
1441s you you've been here a long time so
1443s you're going to be the most successful
1444s kind of idea uh making it so anyone can
1448s join three four months in and be just as
1451s productive feel just as contributory as
1454s someone from the beginning that's that's
1455s been really important
1458s and that's happening the community is
1461s really important you know the community
1463s is really what helps us drive it back in
1465s season one I think we only lasted like a
1467s hundred days
1468s um but back then uh servers it was 10
1472s days was a meteor Run 10 days and Bam
1474s you're you're out the door uh so I mean
1476s it's as the community's grown and we've
1479s uh gotten gotten more people who agree
1482s with the framework we put forward each
1484s season gets more expansive lasts longer
1487s and draws more people and more people
1489s get hooked
1493s and we can see here some some miniature
1496s games as well
1498s um
1499s famous stream here with
1502s um
1503s that's cool
1505s how does the battleship work
1508s yeah game inside of a game uh I never I
1512s didn't quite finish that one yet
1514s um I the game's not loading anything
1517s uh so basically you would Place ashler
1521s pieces uh the white the sandstone and um
1526s uh sale uh against this this would be
1529s your ships and you have a coverage so
1531s people can't cheat and see where your
1532s ships are
1533s um
1534s but the yeah it's it's pretty simply
1536s just climb letters I'm just place blocks
1539s um a lot of my mini games
1541s um are based on block placement uh I
1545s actually have the whole spleefer in here
1546s too which I haven't seen in any other
1548s server
1550s that is pretty cool um yeah
1553s I didn't didn't realize that what that
1555s is that's um that's pretty smart that's
1557s cool
1560s I've got like a tiny little stream
1562s window in the corner of my screen so
1565s but yeah that's that's cool bacteria if
1567s you want to see that
1571s um
1572s yeah it's it's really impressive I mean
1575s like I can't say anything else really
1577s then then it's just it's amazing to see
1579s communities coming together like this
1580s and just
1581s pulling these amazing builds off and
1585s doing it with style really
1588s um
1589s and within an economy not like a
1592s Minecraft creative server yeah so I
1594s think that really that is really
1596s something else and something I enjoy to
1598s see personally from one season to the
1600s next
1601s yeah it's really just been that you know
1603s we we don't spawn anything in
1606s um this is as Earth mentioned like from
1609s the currency all the way through to the
1611s last tier four building block is through
1613s player generated labor and work
1615s everything is on a market economy at
1618s fair market prices
1620s um we you know we really do encourage
1623s that
1624s um kind of maximize capitalist economy
1626s here and just what yeah what the player
1628s basically pull off is just absolutely
1630s amazing
1631s you know we run various various events
1633s various things to try and uh motivate
1636s the the community to build things like
1638s here we have this Tower we have this
1640s concept of hey the four islands and the
1642s four governments you know the the
1644s meteors is coming you know our
1646s astrologists have said that hey this is
1647s this is something we need to be on the
1648s lookout for bring up your best defenses
1650s and we'll contract it out as a global
1652s defense weapon and that was kind of the
1654s the lore behind why some of these towers
1656s are created but just just various things
1658s to keep people creating and creating uh
1661s you know what they want to show the
1662s world
1662s yeah and you know that that tower that
1665s he has talked about it was also part of
1667s a uh you know because I'll say we jumped
1670s in advance of the all's uh Town County
1673s model that's coming up and so the the
1675s four continents kind of run as somewhat
1679s independent governments on this
1681s particular season
1683s and so with them each building their own
1685s Tower it was a little bit of a contest
1687s where the person that kind of built will
1690s say the best Tower there was some you
1692s know criteria behind what constitutes
1694s best uh they also got to design the
1697s roadway around Capitol Island the kind
1700s of the central island of the server so
1702s they got to design the roadway with uh
1704s whatever you know lights and and
1706s railings and whatever it is they wanted
1708s to put on that so the the winning
1710s continent that governor also received a
1714s portion of the revenue from laying down
1717s the blocks and creating that sort of
1719s loop around the capitol Island so you
1723s know we have these contests and things
1724s so it's like it gives them a reason to
1727s play there's a reason to do and then
1729s there's a kickback they they get some
1730s reward from that
1733s here for a second we got some
1736s we had some Underground
1739s underground stuff going on there as well
1740s just to kind of
1744s see how things are looking below the
1746s surface as things are quite excavated
1748s and it and the realities of all these
1752s nice builds and hollowing out yeah
1756s the ground there for all the materials
1758s used
1760s you can imagine you can get through a
1762s lot of materials over a like a couple of
1765s hundred day server
1771s we usually grow a pretty sizable slag
1774s mountain or a couple of them
1779s could we show them our tailings
1782s oh yeah I mean that's that's real
1783s progress
1785s so for say a new player coming in
1789s um you were mentioning just like you
1792s were you were kind of glossing over the
1794s um the superimposed
1796s kind of skill set restrictions
1800s um
1801s you want to just go over that a little
1803s bit on like more in detail of what type
1806s of restrictions are we talking about and
1808s you know how many Specialties you can
1809s pick and so on so forth
1812s yeah so it's it's definitely an
1813s iterative process is what we went
1815s through to kind of develop this out but
1816s generally what we call it is the super
1818s skill sets so what that generally means
1822s is if if you have a skill that plays
1825s into another skill generally they're not
1827s allowed we have some exceptions we even
1829s have some other skills that are not
1831s allowed to be paired together simply
1833s because they are too strong and they are
1835s that super skill which is the the name
1838s ontology of where that name came from
1841s um so what that really means is we want
1843s a minor to capitalize on mining be
1845s really well get to level seven on mining
1847s focus on setting up their their
1849s profession around that but they're not
1851s going to be able to just feed those ores
1854s into a blast furnace for their own
1857s smelting gain because this is an economy
1859s driven server so if we have a minor
1863s who's able to supply all their own or as
1865s a smelter as well then that really just
1868s takes out the market ability for any
1870s other Miner to enter that market there's
1872s a there's an inherent moat beyond the
1874s already existing modes of upgrades and
1876s leveling
1877s so what we sought to do there was just
1880s take that away and make it so that you
1882s had to participate in this economy you
1884s have to sell what you make and with the
1887s services that you provide in order for
1889s the next player to be um successful what
1891s they do and in doing that that's what we
1894s hope to to not have a moat not have a
1896s long-term mode where somebody's joining
1898s on day 150 and they're intimidated but
1901s we've really I think proven over this
1903s last year that that's not really the
1904s case we have players who join there's no
1907s special starter packs there's nothing
1909s that you get you start and you lay down
1911s your land and you start building and
1913s creating and enter the economy and those
1915s entry barriers are quite low uh you know
1918s players are encouraged to to sell every
1920s single item that they make and produce
1923s every single research paper they're able
1925s to and use their skills to gain
1927s resources on Dad speed we we try to
1930s focus on your labor is what's valuable
1932s not walking up to a table and just
1934s loading labor via your cheap calories
1936s onto the table but your time spent
1938s Gathering raw resources your time moving
1941s materials from one shop to another
1943s that's what we try to Value here and
1945s hopefully we provide that experience to
1947s players when they join they're able to
1949s enter into that economy at any level in
1951s any profession and it really is what
1953s keeps transactions in the server going
1957s um and and that plays into
1959s when you become abandoned as a player
1961s and as Earth was starting to mention
1963s there that your your assets are Stripped
1966s Away your money is stripped away and
1968s those resources are added back into the
1970s server so that even though we operate a
1972s large world that world would become
1973s overpopulated if we if we allowed
1975s everything to remain so we do that
1977s cleanup
1979s um of land resources and assets and
1982s players are able to jump back in and
1984s reclaim old lands you know my first oil
1987s drilling uh path that I started on this
1989s server on day one uh is now I believe
1992s just a general workshop and Cafe
1998s cool it's obviously working because like
2001s just anywhere you go on this map there's
2003s just an amazing
2005s like the infrastructure and the actual
2007s buildings and the decorative items
2012s it's um
2014s that's always been a thing like if you
2016s kind of jump into a server that's this
2018s far along it's it is very intimidating
2021s um or it can be so
2024s just those those
2025s um steps you've got set up there like
2027s it's um
2028s definitely seems to be working
2031s congrats yeah it's uh really you know
2034s like Sheamus said focusing on that labor
2036s we really want you to be able to go mine
2038s or go chop trees or we created like
2041s Earth talked about the transporter role
2043s which has been hugely important you know
2045s we've been able to allow a new player to
2047s just hey you can go sell a couple land
2049s claims you know or there's other ways
2051s you can go sell a couple of your starter
2052s land claims and you have enough to get a
2053s truck pretty quickly and you're able to
2055s start transporting goods around and that
2057s keeps that keeps all the stores churning
2059s and moving and the economy running
2061s everybody driving their trucks around
2063s and and uh you know getting those
2065s deliveries in place
2070s yeah I I concur with Toby they're like
2073s you know
2074s the recipe you have here is clearly very
2077s successful and is working quite well
2080s um
2082s and it's just outstanding to see
2084s everything that's been created and
2088s like you said it's the seventh cycle so
2091s it's been going on for quite a while
2094s um
2096s yeah it's just overall overall you know
2100s it's taking me back a bit because it's
2103s just there's so many things to look at
2106s and so many things to kind of
2107s investigate and see
2109s you know where where is this staircase
2111s leading down to and then it's a secret
2114s sneaky Hideaway Cafe or something and
2117s and just like you never know what's
2118s around the corner when you're walking
2120s around
2121s yeah no our players have found bedrock
2125s they have exploited Bedrock to the
2127s maximum extent
2129s um but yeah that's that's the beauty I
2131s think of Eco is really that
2133s we we have a recipe that we believe
2135s works for our community and there are
2138s many communities out there that want to
2139s have their specific game plays and and
2142s uh you know that's a reason why we've
2144s maintained this but also a reason why we
2146s just recently uh launched another server
2148s that we're also hosting called Mom speed
2150s is we we realize that you know Dad speed
2152s was made for that player who you know
2155s because Jimmy and myself we were kind of
2157s younger dads when we assumed we were
2159s still our younger devs but with very
2161s young children when we first started
2163s this because we just didn't have the
2164s time we did not have the time to
2166s participate in those 30-day runs We join

2173s it's it we're overcome by by other
2175s events that made us not competitive in
2177s the market so that's what Dad speed was
2179s about it Still Remains today but we
2182s realized there are players out there who
2183s want to have that Speed Run they want to
2184s say hey let's go as fast as possible
2186s because on Dad speed we do everything we
2188s can to slow you down and to make sure
2190s that people are pulling carts for as
2192s long as possible so that's why we
2194s started mom speed where we took away
2198s um a bit of that but also with the dad
2200s speed challenges of slow skill gains one
2203s skill only but you can Team you can
2206s build uh with ever share whatever with
2209s whomever you want and you've got to
2210s build an insane laser recipe in 30 days
2213s and honestly I don't know if they're
2215s going to be able to hit it in 30 days
2216s and that's just one example of a very
2219s recent development that we're exploring
2221s to try and make sure that we can capture
2223s uh an experience in the dad speed
2226s ecosystem that can be used by anyone who
2230s steps in here and also keep people and
2231s players and aged for the years that we
2234s have and plan to keep hosting gaming
2237s environments for the community here
2242s oh yeah the the world size was
2245s impressively small as well
2248s or for the new experimental server
2252s yes I think you can run end to end in
2254s less than 300 meters around the equator
2256s it's it's quite small
2259s yeah so with that Mom speed or between
2261s the size and like I said just the slow
2264s very slow progression and then you've
2268s also as he said we've really jacked up
2270s what you need for the recipe for the
2272s laser so you got to put in some strange
2274s ingredients here you need like I don't
2276s know a thousand pairs of pants you know
2278s in there you know we kind of made it so
2281s every single skill has to contribute to
2283s the laser which keeps everyone involved
2285s right to the very end
2287s uh and so you know with that and the
2290s small size resources are now very
2293s limited and so you have to start to
2295s barter deals with your neighbor to mine
2297s under his shop you know and uh you guys
2300s have the housing thing I love the
2301s housing uh you know skill point thing
2305s that you have so now with limited space
2308s having a vertical high-rise apartment
2310s building and having one person on the
2313s server maybe supply three or four
2315s housing things housing benefits to
2319s other players that don't have the space
2321s because they're using their space for
2322s their workshop you know it kind of
2324s Fosters that gameplay even yeah now you
2326s can become a landlord
2330s yeah I think I think space is probably
2333s one of the
2334s one of the more underrated difficulty
2337s obstacles that a lot of servers
2340s never really run into in that particular
2343s level
2345s um because
2347s there's there's only really a couple of
2349s a couple of really dense servers where
2351s there's a large world where there's a
2355s high population that is super active
2357s enough to kind of fill that space
2359s whereas
2361s a server would say you know 20 30 active
2364s people playing on a one and a half
2366s kilometer two kilometer world is never
2368s going to run into space issues yeah you
2370s might butt heads with your neighbors a
2371s bit
2372s to you know have Monopoly of that
2375s cornfield or you know that specific
2377s super awesome oil spot
2380s um but you're always gonna be able to
2382s find the resources you require and the
2385s space you need to build your Workshop or
2387s your industrial kind of sector or even
2389s as you say residential housing
2392s to get those bonuses as well
2394s but on a smaller world where you're
2397s suddenly always kind of bumped up
2399s against someone and you need to either
2401s you know collaborate or come to an
2404s economical understanding about
2406s permissions or being allowed to do XYZ
2410s on that property is something that we
2413s took into consideration in particular
2415s for some of the Town stuff that we're
2416s working on so hopefully that'll that'll
2419s also present a lot of interesting
2421s aspects for you guys
2422s once we push that out to be able to do
2425s like localized loss or specific
2428s permission reasons
2430s um and I think that's that's an
2431s important aspect for us as from the
2434s development team to
2435s you know really keep in mind being all
2438s of these things and seeing kind of how
2439s space is also a limited resource
2444s um
2445s especially with those those those really
2447s really tough requirements that you put
2448s out
2449s uh no I I agree land land is underrated
2452s as it's kind of like in real life it's
2455s it's very much the the one limiting
2457s thing that you can't make more of in the
2460s game really it's kind of it's kind of
2462s there you know all on this Dad speed
2465s this long speed server we even uh
2468s created a agricultural landlord system
2472s here
2474s so you've got Farmers gatherers that are
2477s doing their thing but if a person that's
2481s not involved in agriculture you know
2483s they're a smelter and a tailor or
2485s something uh they but they have some
2487s extra land they have some you know
2489s they've been making good money they buy
2490s some land and it's a good agricultural
2492s land they can rent that out we have some
2495s laws in place we've leveraged the Great
2498s Law system to allow them to become an
2500s agricultural landlord and so they can
2503s sort of rent their land out for
2505s agricultural use by those other players
2508s so you know again just kind of providing
2510s another opportunity there for because
2511s here on this long-term server Big World
2514s lots of space so use the space and let
2518s people have fun with uh again sort of
2521s making a tertiary sort of unnamed skill
2524s as a landlord
2527s I know that really comes into a very
2529s difficult part you know of how do you
2530s manage Mining rights
2532s um you know do I want a player to just
2534s be in the mind but not have access to my
2537s chests above and trying to navigate that
2539s through both you know development uh as
2542s a core part of the game as well as just
2544s you know a law implementation I can only
2546s imagine
2548s um but you know we we tried to we try to
2550s do our best to kind of navigate through
2552s those limitations here on bad speed and
2554s and make sure that our ethos is held up
2557s but also players are you know effective
2560s contributors into the economy
2563s um you know and as you can kind of see
2564s here with with some of the things that
2566s we've got we have certain rules like we
2568s have a physics rule in the game where
2570s you know we have it as you know no
2571s floating structure things have to be you
2574s know reasonably uh you know adhering to
2576s the laws of physics so that required
2579s bridge is you know Bridges weren't
2580s allowed on the server for the first
2583s um you know x amount of days until the
2585s proper supports could be made because
2586s human logs couldn't support a bridge it
2588s had to be Stone and it had to be certain
2590s tiers
2591s um and you know because of all that
2593s people are are ramping up materials and
2595s pumping CO2 into the world and we've
2598s jacked up CO2 production
2600s um and and we really made it so that it
2603s was going to be challenging and it was I
2604s mean how many meters of sea rise did we
2606s have this season
2608s I don't think we saw any this season run
2610s we got close
2612s very close here yeah
2615s um but yeah that just kind of goes into
2618s um you know making it challenging enough
2619s uh that it you remain engaged long term
2623s but also that you know it is achievable
2625s it is not an impossible task which I
2627s think is something that remains to be
2629s seen on Mom speed we'll see how we did
2630s on that one
2632s uh but yeah
2635s no it's looking it's looking quite nice
2637s and on on the the sea level threat I see
2640s that you built a defensive Quay
2643s along the entire Coastline just gonna
2646s protective measure yeah I remember the
2649s chat was crazy
2650s lessons learned from last season yeah

2657s I think the chat was just going insane
2659s with like oh my God we're at this people
2660s they passed laws you know you can't run
2662s or you get taxed if your machines are
2664s running when the global parts per
2666s millionaire is at a certain level
2669s um but yeah the players were able I mean
2670s that was player driven you know as
2672s admins we did nothing we just sat by in
2674s fact I think I was pumping my oil
2677s um refineries as much as I could uh
2679s because I had to play in the economy I
2680s had to get money and here's my old oil
2682s refining pad which is no longer an oil
2684s refining pad it is it is now a comfy
2687s little Lounge to sit in and read your
2688s books reclaimed by a new player
2692s yeah quite amazing and you know we we
2695s try to also have the best experience for
2697s players you know we run this this server
2699s is as stripped down as as possible on a
2702s dedicated
2703s um bare metal Linux box top of the line
2706s Hardware uh upgraded every time the
2708s provider has a major upgrade and really
2711s just trying to provide that that best
2712s user experience possible
2715s foreign
2722s management and and you guys are clearly
2725s putting in you know a
2727s lot of heart into it making sure that
2729s everyone is having a good time and
2730s making sure that people are behaving and
2732s kind of adhering through the rules that
2735s you've set forth um and so on
2738s um so it's it's
2740s an amazement to just you know watch this

2753s watching all of the block usage and then
2757s yeah pretty much everywhere I go it's

2796s biggest our best going the longest also
2799s some of the most amazing Creations I've

2805s down but it's hard to say you know how
2807s much longer we're really going to keep
2808s it up and running but we're open to
2810s player feedback that's why we started
2812s mom speed was to give something else to
2814s do while still having the long term so I
2817s mean I wouldn't be too surprised if this
2820s lasts still a couple of more months but
2822s if the player community comes together
2823s and says hey we're really this has been
2825s really great we've enjoyed it we're but
2828s we're ready for the next one and full
2829s transparency and availability with all
2832s this I post on a publicly available
2835s Dropbox all the server files when we're
2837s done so that players can go ahead if
2839s they if they because they should cherish
2841s their their Creations so we have that as
2844s a possibility for them to get the server
2845s files and uh and go ahead and relive

3098s looking on from a utilitarian standpoint

3143s a lot of Seasons we've had different
3145s roles we've had uh you know we have had
3148s people that are you know more dedicated
3150s to like the highways like a department
3152s of highway administrator there's been
3155s roles around uh you know
3158s ecological conservation that are more
3160s around continuing to maintain forests
3163s and things like that uh you know this
3166s season was different in that we did
3168s divide it up into the four continents so
3171s the central government took a very light
3174s role one once we kind of got a lot of
3177s the core things in place it was really
3180s turned over to the four governors of
3182s each one of the continents to kind of
3186s administer and run things as they saw
3188s fit on their continent so there was a
3190s lot of
3192s it was a little bit of light competition
3195s going on there
3196s because one of the things we set up in
3199s our tax system
3200s was that uh if you the more population
3204s your continent had
3206s is good because you're generating a lot
3208s of stuff
3209s but you're you didn't get as much
3212s Kickback from the government in terms of
3214s like uh money
3216s from things so he had a very very small
3218s trickle from the outside whereas if your
3221s continent was small maybe struggling
3222s didn't have many people on it not a lot
3224s of production you got a much higher kind
3227s of subsidy and Kickback from the
3228s government so it was uh you know do you
3231s want to live and have your Workshop uh
3234s you know in a place where you're highly
3235s government subsidized or not you know so
3238s there's a lot of player choices in where
3240s you live and where you build your shop
3242s you know that kind of thing
3245s I really want to show off this some
3247s Wonder wolf sort of amusement park which
3249s was sort of like a destination players
3252s could visit and actually interact with
3253s things
3255s um so there was supposed to be like some
3257s food shops and
3258s and then you could do a um hunting
3262s a game where you'd shoot arrows through
3264s the uh through the waterfall and hope to
3267s hit a Target
3270s and then there was a a wheelbarrow race
3273s track where you'd get that awfully
3274s difficult to control wheelbarrow and try
3276s and get around this sort of
3278s little track here and it was surprising
3280s the high school game high school game
3282s yeah yeah
3284s and uh then there was a really cool
3287s water slide so you'd climb up just like
3290s you would at a at a Fair amusement park
3292s and then there was water that had been
3294s channeled through
3296s the blocks all the way down
3300s to a slide into the water and then you'd
3302s sort of go through an underground tunnel
3307s um
3308s and then there was even a sauna
3310s underneath
3312s complete with a cloak room
3314s towels
3317s and uh and then also just nearby
3321s obviously a bus stop of course so you
3323s can
3324s get to the Wonder Wharf and uh a ferris
3328s wheel
3329s as well of course
3331s not complete without a ferris wheel
3334s like I said that even even underground
3336s you've got sneaky things hidden away
3338s like that sauna just like amazing
3342s amazing clever use of some of these
3344s things
3345s and yeah you know speaking to some of
3348s that uh underground cleverness you know
3350s I remember early on in the in the
3352s beginning parts of this run we had the
3354s various islands and the rule from the
3356s government was hey we don't have the
3357s technology to build the bridges and you
3359s know so that meant that some players had
3361s some interesting decisions because they
3363s were playing with friends and maybe they
3364s settled on different islands and then
3366s they couldn't go trade with one another
3367s easily so you know one of the rules we
3369s had was like Hey physics we have to
3371s operate in physics there has to be a
3372s bridge you have to build it so the
3374s players got crafty and as you can see
3375s here they went underground and they
3379s built a tunnel system that went under
3381s the water and connected these two
3384s islands together with ramp so that they
3387s could cart their uh little wooden carts
3390s full of ore in a tunnel that was not
3393s full of water therefore they were
3394s adhering to physics so they it was
3396s interesting because they accomplished
3397s our intent of of living within the world
3400s of physics building this watertight
3402s tunnel but also not breaking the rules
3405s of of having a bridge so it's really
3406s great to kind of see those player
3408s Solutions because those government
3409s issues and problems that come up
3412s yeah it's
3416s quite uh so uh
3418s are we uh on my stream at the moment
3421s yeah
3423s so uh some players on um the Olympus uh
3427s Island decided that they would um
3429s build a huge underground uh production
3432s place for all their uh polluting
3434s Industries so a lot of this was started
3437s to be carved out by hand
3439s but it was and it was themed around like
3442s a dwarven-esque style
3445s um so you ended up with some very woven
3447s looking buildings I don't know some of
3448s the rules for no electrical lighting
3452s um and they lined it with stone pillars
3456s as you can see just carved out of the
3458s Rock
3460s and uh
3461s just a really cool
3463s deep underground environment that the
3465s idea the RP idea behind it was to
3467s contain the pollution
3470s to somewhere that wasn't near
3473s farms and nature or anything like that
3477s and then they put like a large
3478s underground power plant under here as
3480s well

3491s yeah yeah so we had a uh another player
3494s created a fallout shelter and that was
3497s uh they started building it uh really
3500s early on
3501s I think before well before skid steers

3505s it was started to be excavated by hand

3516s and as you can see very much a fallout

3558s quick note that had a add a thought and

3568s talking a little bit previously
3571s um mentioning on kind of government sort
3573s of handling everything and managing and
3576s and so on so forth
3579s how is the government kind of handling
3582s player leaving player joining and kind
3585s of replacement because I'm assuming that
3586s not everyone is not the original
3588s government is going to stick around or
3591s and keep themselves occupied with the
3593s same
3594s same job throughout the entire cycle as
3597s I'm presuming that some of the positions
3599s are being changed out and and different
3601s people are doing them
3603s yeah so we we looked at this from you
3607s know earlier on we had a lot of good
3608s feedback from the community that you
3609s know they were they were tired in their
3611s skills because it was two skills only
3612s when you get to 100 day 200 you get
3615s tired I'm just doing the same thing so
3617s we implemented a re-education program
3620s that allowed players to you have to Max
3622s to level seven you have to trade in all
3624s of your tables all of your upgrades and
3626s all excess materials of that skill
3628s traded in and the government takes it
3630s the government blows it up at its uh
3633s um
3634s unexploded Ordnance Center and then
3637s you're gifted a new skill
3639s and that helps players who remain to be
3642s continuously re-energizing new things
3643s then as players just simply leave and
3646s depart the server and they they enter I
3648s think we have it in about a month
3650s um when they hit abandoned status but
3651s then we still have kind of a manual
3653s review of okay we've reached out to this
3655s player we've pinged them directly on
3657s Discord a couple of times no response or
3659s they came back and said hey thanks guys
3661s but I'm gonna go ahead and call it quits
3662s you can go ahead and delete my stuff and
3664s then we have workers that are energized
3667s in from the government to go and remove
3669s their claims they physically there's no
3671s admin going around with the dev tool
3672s deleting their stuff we the government
3674s pays players to put in their labor to go
3677s take down that player structure to go
3680s and uh pull up all those materials and a
3683s government officer comes and pulls up
3684s the claims and they auction off that
3686s land if needed or they simply unclaim it
3688s and it's for the next person to grab
3690s onto and that's how we deal with the
3692s kind of player recycling over the the
3693s hundreds of days
3695s well and then as far as the government's
3697s concerned we we encourage open elections
3700s you know so there's nothing that says if
3702s you're a governor there's nothing that
3703s stops somebody else after you're after a
3705s couple weeks when your term is up to to
3708s pick you out you know and run it run an
3711s election run a campaign so we get we get
3713s fresh people in the government
3715s um you know throughout the season so
3717s usually you know we're we had a world
3719s leader in the beginning of the season
3721s and he he stepped down and we've had
3723s different Governors throughout the
3724s season so um we always kind of get the
3727s the fresh meat in there in the
3729s government too and we provide kind of
3731s some basic Frameworks like Sheamus was
3733s talking about with the re-education
3734s program that's just a basic thing that
3736s we provide to help players stay
3738s interested but at the same time we allow
3741s this rotation of the players within the
3743s government
3745s their own ideas at the table and we like
3747s to encourage player Freedom not
3750s restrictions we like to encourage
3752s freedoms and encourage better behaviors
3755s that we want to see or the the gameplay
3757s that we kind of agree with you know we
3760s like to incentivize instead of you know
3763s just flat prevents that's usually from
3765s an admin perspective that's what we look
3767s at is let's make sure we're not crushing
3770s player Freedom we want the players to be
3771s able to do what they want and we want a
3773s government that's engaged and free
3776s elections and it's kind of one of our
3778s foundation pieces

3783s that was a good summary of it

3787s we've got someone asking shmuel to take

3791s pumpkin and Olympus Town Hall

3798s I'm guessing that's one of the persons
3800s involved in building it or someone that

3815s probably gonna start you want to have a
3816s look at any of the laws
3819s um I was gonna I was gonna check in on
3821s like most servers that run longer time
3824s or kind of involved into not your kind
3827s of standard
3828s under cycled
3832s um there was usually run with
3834s a whole bunch of different mods and and
3837s kind of custom recipes or just general
3839s content mods and and so on so forth
3843s and I believe you're you guys approach
3844s has been kind of hands off on that just
3846s to
3848s got a few
3850s I believe
3853s we have any yeah other like main mods
3858s that other servers use I think most of
3859s ours are actually all in-house
3862s yeah Jimmy manages our our mod team you
3864s could probably speak a little bit to
3865s that of what they've implemented very
3867s light though
3868s yeah it's mostly we we try to balance
3871s some things one of the things we've done
3872s is kind of taken away the skill books to
3876s make it so you can't just pump out
3878s infinite skill Scrolls so that was one
3879s of the first things we've done
3882s um you know and there's just been some
3883s some minor adjustments to the recipes
3886s such as having like clay involved in the
3890s in the iron recipe and the bloomery and
3892s then pots involved in the iron recipes
3894s at the blast furnace to help tie in some
3898s other
3899s um professions with that
3902s um and and we've seen some good success
3903s with that now it you know as we the
3906s season goes on we've had to make some
3907s other adjustments you know because maybe
3909s something we were too heavy-handed on
3911s and we had to maybe bring it down or we
3914s had to come up with ways to create clay
3916s because Clay is kind of hard to dig so
3920s um you know very minimal
3923s um we do have a pretty good member on
3925s The Mod team who's helped also balance
3928s some things like with the oil
3930s um like some people have had some an oil
3932s spot where you can get you know an
3934s incredible amount of oil if you pick
3936s just the perfect spot so we've kind of
3938s brought that cap down and brought the
3941s lower part up so it's more fair and
3944s getting that Prime oil spot isn't such a
3947s boon for that one person who managed to
3949s claim it or if somebody who didn't you
3951s know somebody who's not even involved in
3953s oil claims that oil spot and the whole
3955s server screwed you know so we've kind of
3957s brought the Caps down made sure there's
3960s a cap on it and brought the lows up
3962s um you know and we've we've done a
3964s couple other minor adjustments and we're
3966s constantly experimenting especially with
3968s Mom speed we're looking at adjusting you
3971s know how calorie consumption works and
3973s that's kind of where we're currently
3974s trying to tackle with what the mod team
3976s can do
3980s nice sounding something quite quite
3982s exciting and
3983s I'll definitely gonna keep an eye out on
3986s seeing what that results in because
3988s that's
3989s only one of the biggest interests for me
3991s outside of the Fantastic builds you guys
3993s have
3995s um just from my main balance perspective
3997s because there's a lot of
3999s a lot of changes that are similar to
4001s those revolving into 10 where some some
4004s new interdependencies between things are
4006s going to come up
4008s I might not appreciate some of those
4010s changes but I think they're gonna be
4013s quite fun for a lot of players and and
4015s combine more of them
4019s um and especially having that
4020s interdependency more between different
4022s professions especially over some
4025s branches that might not be apparently
4028s involved in in one another
4031s um as you mentioned like clay involved
4033s in in smelting is
4035s um an interesting kind of crossover that
4037s ties in some of the brick working in
4040s there
4042s um
4044s and we tried to make it realistically
4047s yeah it's like molds you know mold for
4049s your clay bars or something like that so
4052s you know that's kind of why we decided
4054s to add clay and and we wanted to you
4056s know we understand that it's not going
4058s to be perfect
4059s um but we just want to make sure that we
4061s have those opportunities as Earth have
4063s talked about for the long duration you
4065s know and and brick you know Brick Layers
4068s tend to kind of fall out but iron is
4070s from you know the second you smelt your
4072s first iron bar to the moment that meteor
4075s drops you need iron you know so that was
4078s a great way to tackle a problem we felt
4081s they're not really a problem but a
4083s balancing for a whole nother profession
4085s keep them relevant throughout yeah
4088s yeah I know I I really appreciate the uh
4092s the effort to dig into that that
4095s particular beast on the gameplay aspect
4097s of it because it is it is quite a
4101s heavy hitting potential where it's it's
4104s a hit or miss or
4106s things go wildly out of control one way
4109s or another
4111s um and that's always exciting from a
4113s player's perspective but also from from
4114s actually doing the changes as well where
4117s minor tweak that might seem
4119s insignificant and can turn out to be an
4122s astronomically impacting decision
4126s it's it's
4128s quite quite impressive to seeing
4131s everyone that
4132s does dabble in it
4135s um have it kind of result and pan out so
4137s greatly

29s with us Jimmy and Sheamus from Dad speed
33s and we also have a couple of their staff
35s and volunteers with Earth shmuel and
38s armored Stone as well

53s I'll go yeah I'm uh Jimmy uh one of the
56s founders here at dad speed and uh you
60s know we started about three years back
62s I can uh just saw an idea and an
65s opportunity to really push that economic
68s uh game style that we weren't really
71s seeing
72s and that's really how it started just uh
75s with one road to a neighbor
79s go ahead James as uh as we used to say
82s in dad speed one all roads lead to
84s craftsmans and that was the start of dad
87s speed one and as uh as Jimmy said we we
90s started this out because we wanted to
92s have that excellent Eco gameplay inside
96s of an economy-based community that
100s favored social interaction playing on
102s the market sharing of
104s um of of resources through a market
106s environment and persistent as well be
109s able to give players the ability to have
111s Creations long term
114s and we are now in season seven and we've
116s been running this uh for almost four
119s years uh in the dad speed seasons and in
122s season seven uh you know we maintain
124s that that Central dad speed ethos of
126s economy focused player driven gameplay
129s and bringing to the people the ability
132s to make their Creations in a market
134s economy with uh all other
138s uh players operating in a way that they
141s need you
142s meaning we have what's called a super
144s skill set here on Dad speed which means
147s we don't necessarily want you to be the
149s miner and the smelter in the same we
151s want you to have a skill and be good at
154s that skill but you have to sell your
156s products and services in that skill in
158s order for the next player beside you to
160s be able to push on their uh their craft
163s and so on and so forth throughout the
165s entire Tech Tree uh culminating in what
168s you see here on Dad speed
171s um and here we have in season seven as
173s you can see we we uh we had a nice
176s little lore aspect of a spaceship that
178s brought us
180s just switching over to the game view
182s here just soon okay sure
185s um yeah so we've got uh here in dad
188s speed we've got this lore the spaceship
190s idea that is what brought us in the
192s meteor destruction of season six to
194s season seven and from an admin and kind
198s of player and a season setup perspective
200s we just laid down this basic ship
202s a little receiving area to get you going
205s and then the rest of it is just the
207s general dad speed ethos and community
210s that starts it up player driven player
212s ran player managed every season is a
216s completely different experience but
217s within that same dad speed ethos that
219s gives you that long-term gameplay your
222s ability to make incredible Creations as
225s I like to say a lot is you know craft
226s and enjoy and show us your creations and
229s the players here in this community have
231s absolutely knocked out of the park as
233s they do every season with seven and
235s there are some amazing Creations we hope
236s to show you today so I'll go ahead and
238s pass it off to a voice you've all heard
241s many many times before and uh who needs
244s no further introduction take it away
246s Earth hey thanks yeah so uh as these
249s guys were saying the admins I was
251s actually looking for a uh an Eco server
255s and you guys know I do you know video
257s content for YouTube but besides that
260s just as a player I wanted to find a
264s server where it would last a little bit
266s longer than just you know two three
268s weeks uh and one that also was kind of
271s backed by you know good administrators
274s that wouldn't sort of just drop the
276s server after a while so after playing a
279s number of different servers some that
281s said long term some that were short-term
283s and so on I finally wound up with these
285s guys early on I forget whether it was
287s what season it was either season one or
289s season two but it was writer season one
292s yeah you're OG I think it was right at
295s the very beginning there and I realized
297s okay I've found a little bit of a home
298s because these guys are dedicated to
300s exactly what I'm after you know uh good
304s economy because uh you know that can be
306s a struggle when it's player based there
309s tends to be a
310s I'll say there tends to be kind of a you
312s win by conquering you know in the
315s economy in a lot of games but but Eco is
318s different I realize it has that that
320s collaborative nature uh that Sheamus was
323s just talking about so I I really kind of
326s felt that and joined in with these guys
327s so uh fortunately they they've let me
330s play an active role I'll say in a lot of
333s the governments a lot of times I'll pick
335s up uh I guess what you would call the
337s treasury in the government piece because
339s that's another unique thing obviously an
342s Eco it has this government and the law
344s system and this really Dynamic economics
348s so you know I've kind of picked up that
350s treasury role and uh just to kind of
353s foster you know that whole thing that
355s that they were talking about it seems to
357s me a lot of this long-term gameplay that
361s they've set up here where things persist
364s it's it realized right on that the
366s government the in-game government needed
369s to provide opportunities you know
371s opportunities for both existing players
374s people that have maybe been on the
376s server for three months and okay what do
378s I do now
379s as well as new players and that was a
381s little challenging so
383s you know being involved to help put
386s together a lot of these kind of
389s um I'll say sort of ongoing kind of
391s opportunities for players has been a
394s large part of what I've I've done here
398s you know uh if we were to talk about
401s what some of those things are you know
403s the currency you know we try to look for
405s an opportunity try to look for an
407s opportunity at each point you know
409s anything that we do here in dad speed
412s with the government so even with the
415s currency and how that's injected uh you
418s know we kind of just start there and
420s make an opportunity for players so we
423s don't just for instance just distribute
425s wealth freely you kind of have to work
427s for it you kind of to earn it and and
429s there's been several things we've tried
431s to do to uh kind of do that and they've
434s all seemed to work we've on a couple
436s different seasons we've had a public
439s gold mine so to get money a player goes
442s to the public gold mine they mine some
444s gold you know they're starting out they
446s put it in their cart they drag it back
448s to the mint and so that's actually what
450s we use to make the currency and so
452s they're able to get a little bit of
455s daily
456s income each day just from this
459s interaction which feeds then the
462s government to be able to print more
463s money
465s um and that's something again that
467s people can do as
469s existing players that have been here for
471s a while and maybe they're having a
472s shortfall in cash but also a new player
475s you can jump right in here and day one
478s okay you know how that people will say
480s well how do I get started how do I make
481s some money and so we'll we'll give them
484s two or three options we'll say hey well
485s you can start by mining the gold and
488s taking it to the mint uh this season
491s seven we've done it a little different
492s it's paper
494s so you can buy paper from there are
498s several people that are selling paper
499s and anyone can make paper as long as
502s they have the table for it some people
504s make it more efficiently if they've got
505s the right the paper Milling skill but a
508s lot of people will sell paper and so you
511s can buy paper and then take it to the
513s net and sell it for an incredible profit
515s the government is very generous we have
517s a incredible return on your paper
519s contribution to the government and so
522s they earn their money that way
524s there's also this uh Transportation
527s concept that we put into play so just
531s moving goods from one place to another
533s and transporting those things
536s one of the there are a couple of server
539s rules it's kind of part of that ethos
541s that was being talked about where we
545s always kind of encourage that your Buy
548s price for goods which could always be a
550s little bit higher than what someone
552s else's sell prices
554s and so that Delta there it seems a
557s little odd that you would do that you
559s know you might think well I'm just going
560s to match the sale prices someone has but
562s by wanting to buy the goods you need for
565s your own production
566s uh at a slightly higher price than what
569s the producer is selling them for rates
572s at Delta in in that sort of buy and sell
575s so a transporter can just come in with
578s their cart their truck by hand whatever
580s it happens to be buy something from one
583s person transport it somewhere else and
586s sell it for a profit
587s and so seeing that sort of
590s Transportation mechanism we uh bit on
594s that hook and ran with it and so we
596s actually enhance that even farther by
599s having what we call a master transporter
601s and trucker rolls we've actually kind of
603s created a a tertiary skill that people
606s can pick up uh so if you're new to the
609s server and you're not sure what skill
611s you want then you're just kind of like
613s checking things out you become by
616s default in the demographics and the laws
618s that we have set up you become a master
620s transporter
622s and the government subsidizes an
625s additional percentage of that profit
626s that you make whenever you buy and sell
629s Goods so you know you sell something for
631s let's say you know a hundred coins the
634s government will subsidize an additional
636s 15 on top of that so people have
639s actually made an entire living on the
642s server just by moving goods and making
645s sure that everyone's being supplied with
648s the demand that they need and moving
649s Goods around
651s so if you take no skills you get this
654s extra bonus uh if you take one skill
657s then you get kind of half that if you've
660s kind of taken the
662s on This Server we kind of have a two
664s skill limit so if you've kind of reached
666s your limit on two skills then then you
668s don't get any of that so it almost
670s encourages people to take only one skill
673s or maybe take no skills and feed in so
677s again that's another new player
678s opportunity or we've had some people
680s interested in just wanting to transport
684s and I know at least one person has said
686s hey when version 10 drops and we get
689s some votes I think the votes are coming
691s right guys you know they're coming
693s they're on their way yeah so some people
696s said hey I just want to transport and
699s use my boat to move Goods like a barge
702s from one place to another that's what I
703s want to do so we kind of got that base
706s mechanism in place with just a couple
708s simple laws that help promulgate that
711s you know and these Transporters also get
714s uh you know there's a base currency we
717s obviously have but we have a secondary
719s currency which is uh we call it land
721s tokens
722s and so when uh players players do leave
726s the server eventually you know they've
728s played for a few months they've decided
729s to move on so when we reclaim their
732s property we again turn that into an
734s opportunity
735s and that opportunity is uh they get sold
739s not for the base currency but the
741s properties get sold for these land
743s tokens so there's very different there's
745s different ways that players can earn
748s land tokens and this transportation is
750s one of them so in addition to getting
752s base currency you get special land
754s tokens and you're able to then trade
756s those in and buy a property Like a
758s downtown nice uh nice well-suited yeah
761s location location you know they get a
764s great property right in the middle of
765s town
766s so we use uh we use the currencies again
769s to kind of create these additional
771s gameplay of real estate going on so you
774s know properties just aren't uh you know
776s there for I'll say up for grabs it
778s becomes part of the whole uh part of the
781s whole cycle you know okay I'm doing I'm
783s doing things now I'm earning this
784s special token credit so I can go buy
787s stuff you know so um yeah that's one
790s example of opportunity another one I'll
794s kind of mention here is uh what we've
797s done around oil
798s production
799s so I know this this has seemed weird to
802s a lot of people coming in but we have
804s actually especially coming into a game
806s called eco but we've actually limited or
810s made it very hard let's say a little bit
812s difficult to use Renewable Power you
816s know the wind turbines and the solar
818s panels
819s and part of that is that you know that's
822s like free once you create that it's like
824s free energy
825s so instead what we've done here is make
829s it so those things are actually very
832s either restricted or very expensive to
834s create
836s and so what we've done instead is kind
839s of promote then the combustion
841s generators and the use of oil
844s and even though there are some recipes
846s you know epoxies Plastics different
849s things that use the oil if you I think
852s if you relied purely on consumption of
855s oil by that or even the trucks you know
858s excavators skid steers that use it uh
861s you actually could have one person on
864s the server you know crank out a couple
866s thousand Barrels in a stockpile
868s and that would last a long time you know
870s without it but with this uh needing
874s power from combustion generators we
877s create an opportunity and I put out a
879s government contract to build a power
881s plant it has six seven eight combustion
884s generators in it so that's kind of a
886s build project for the community and then
889s every day that power plant can easily
892s burn up a couple hundred barrels of oil
896s in in a given power plant we might have
899s two or three of these on the server all
900s kind of churning at once
902s and so you know that means the oil
905s producers have a reason to come in every
906s couple days crank out some more barrels
909s of oil and that also feeds that supply
912s chain once again creates an a demand and
915s an opportunity for uh you know people to
918s smelt the iron to make the barrels the
921s people to mine the iron sell it to the
923s smelters and so on so it kind of creates
925s these Supply chains just through uh
928s limiting things so in general our laws
931s seem a little odd to people because
934s we'll say okay you know that's that's
936s going to cost you ten thousand credits
938s of some sort to uh make a wind turbine
940s we're gonna tax you massively for each
943s one you put out and so they it seems
946s limited but it's actually creating
948s Opportunity by kind of uh doing these
951s kinds of things so uh I don't know those
953s are a couple different ways that we
955s create those opportunities yeah I I
958s think it's it's quite exciting to see
961s just how different servers are running
964s into kind of they're treating the same
966s problems very differently and having
968s different approaches to solutions to
971s these
972s kind of things and and you know one is
974s doing limitations versus others
976s subsidizing or
979s um just kind of varying
981s varying how they're resolving it
984s um
985s but you guys were running
988s quite abnormally long compared to most
991s other servers how long is your your
993s usual kind of cycle length
999s yeah so that's
1001s um yeah it's just something that we we
1003s as we start up the server with a player
1005s driven approach an economy similar to
1007s our run length
1009s um so really it's the player base who
1010s kind of decides that for us I think this
1013s is probably our longest we're just about
1014s a year but typically we're at least 200
1017s days I believe but yeah it's just it's a
1020s lot for as long as people are creating
1021s and having a an enjoyable experience we
1024s keep it running and and uh yeah go ahead
1027s or
1029s oh no that's exactly what I was going to
1031s say that you know it's kind of player
1033s driven and so you know this this
1035s opportunity thing I was talking about it
1037s we've also realized it's really
1039s important to
1041s uh have things that new players joining
1043s in two three four months into the server
1046s that they can be just as productive just
1048s as contributory to the economy and be
1051s able to do things as much as those
1052s people that were here in the first
1053s couple of weeks
1055s so you know a lot of these kind of
1057s things that we have in place allow them
1059s to be able to do that and I would say
1061s the lifeblood is there's a few people
1063s that started first couple weeks and you
1066s know are still in there still in there
1068s months later logging back in doing their
1070s thing you know still building but I
1072s would say the lifeblood is really the
1074s new players that keep joining this
1077s instance and keep adding to it and
1079s expanding on it uh so not making sure
1083s that we don't just limit that to you
1086s you've been here a long time so you're
1088s going to be the most successful kind of
1089s idea uh making it so anyone can join
1093s three four months in and be just as
1096s productive feel just as contributory as
1098s someone from the beginning that's that's
1100s been really important
1103s and that's happening the community is
1106s really important you know the community
1107s is really what helps us drive it back in
1109s season one I think we only lasted like a
1111s hundred days
1113s um but back then uh servers it was 10
1116s days was a meteor Run 10 days and Bam
1119s you're you're out the door uh so I mean
1121s it's as the community's grown and we've
1123s uh gotten gotten more people who agree
1127s with the framework we put forward each
1129s season gets more expansive lasts longer
1132s and draws more people and more people
1134s get hooked
1138s and we can see here some some miniature
1140s games as well
1142s um
1143s famous stream here with
1147s um
1148s that's cool
1150s how does the battleship work
1152s yeah game inside of a game uh I never I
1157s didn't quite finish that one yet
1159s um
1159s I the game's not loading anything
1162s uh so basically you would Place ashler
1166s pieces uh the white the sandstone and um
1170s uh sale uh against this this would be
1174s your ships and you have a coverage so
1175s people can't cheat and see where your
1177s ships are
1178s um
1179s but the yeah it's it's pretty simply
1181s just climb letters I'm just place blocks
1184s um a lot of my mini games
1186s um
1186s are based on block placement uh I
1189s actually have a whole supply for arena
1190s here too which I haven't seen on any
1193s other server
1195s that is pretty cool um yeah
1198s yeah I didn't didn't realize there were
1200s ladders that's um that's pretty smart
1201s that's cool
1205s I've got like a tiny little stream
1206s window in the corner of my screen so
1209s but yeah that's that's cool bacteria if
1212s you want to see that
1216s um
1216s yeah it's it's really impressive I mean
1220s like I can't say anything else really
1222s then then it's just it's amazing to see
1224s communities coming together like this
1225s and just
1226s pulling these amazing builds off and
1230s doing it with style really
1233s um
1234s and within an economy not like a
1237s Minecraft creative server yeah so I
1239s think that really that is really
1241s something else and something I enjoy to
1243s see personally from one season to the
1244s next
1246s yeah it's really just been that you know
1248s we we don't spawn anything in
1251s um this is as Earth mentioned like from
1254s the currency all the way through to the
1255s last tier four building block is through
1258s player generated labor and work
1260s everything is on a market economy at
1262s fair market prices
1265s um we you know we really do encourage
1268s that
1269s um kind of maximize capitalist economy
1271s here and just what yeah what the player
1273s basically pull off is just absolutely
1274s amazing
1275s you know we run various various events
1278s various things to try and uh motivate
1281s the the community to build things like
1283s here we have this Tower we have this
1285s concept of hey the four islands and the
1287s four governments you know the the
1288s meteors is coming you know our
1290s astrologists have said that hey this is
1292s this is something we need to be on the
1293s lookout for bring up your best defenses
1295s and we'll contract it out as a global
1297s defense weapon and that was kind of the
1299s the lore behind why some of these towers
1301s are created but just just various things
1303s to keep people creating and creating uh
1305s you know what they want to show the
1306s world
1307s yeah and you know that that tower that
1309s he has talked about it was also part of
1312s a uh you know because I'll say we jumped
1315s in advance of the all's uh Town County
1318s model that's coming up and so the the
1320s four continents kind of run as somewhat
1324s independent governments on this
1326s particular season
1327s and so with them each building their own
1330s Tower it was a little bit of a contest
1332s where the person that kind of built will
1335s say the best Tower there was some you
1337s know criteria behind what constitutes
1339s best uh they also got to design the
1342s roadway around Capitol Island kind of
1345s the central island of the server so they
1347s got to design the roadway with uh
1349s whatever you know lights and and
1351s railings and whatever it is they wanted
1353s to put on that so the the winning
1355s continent that governor also received a
1359s portion of the revenue from laying down
1361s the blocks and creating that sort of
1364s loop around the capitol Island so you
1368s know we have these contests and things
1369s so it's like it gives them a reason to
1372s play there's a reason to do and then
1373s there's a kickback they they get some
1375s reward from that
1378s here for a second we got some we had
1381s some Underground
1383s underground stuff going on there as well
1385s just to kind of
1389s see how things are looking below the
1391s surface as things are quite excavated
1393s and it the realities of all these nice
1397s builds and hollowing out yeah
1401s the ground there for all the materials
1403s used
1405s you can imagine you can get through a
1406s lot of materials over a like a couple of
1410s hundred day server
1416s we usually grow a pretty sizable slag
1419s mountain or a couple of them
1423s could we show them our tailings
1426s oh yeah I mean that's that's real
1428s progress
1430s so for say a new player coming in
1434s um you were mentioning just like you
1437s were you were kind of glossing over the
1439s um the superimposed
1440s kind of skill set restrictions
1444s um
1445s you want to just go over that a little
1448s bit on like more in detail of what type
1451s of restrictions are we talking about and
1452s you know how many Specialties you can
1454s pick and so on so forth
1456s yeah so it's it's definitely an
1458s iterative process is what we went
1460s through to kind of develop this out but
1461s generally what we call it is the super
1463s skill sets so what that generally means
1466s is if if you have a skill that plays
1470s into another skill generally they're not
1472s allowed we have some exceptions we even
1474s have some other skills that are not
1476s allowed to be paired together simply
1477s because they are too strong and they are
1480s that super skill which is the the name
1482s ontology of where that name came from
1485s um so what that really means is we want
1487s a minor to capitalize on mining be
1490s really well get to level seven on mining
1492s focus on setting up their their
1494s profession around that but they're not
1496s going to be able to just feed those ores
1499s into a blast furnace for their own
1501s smelting gain because this is an economy
1504s driven server so if we have a minor
1508s who's able to supply all their own or as
1510s a smelter as well then that really just
1512s takes out the market ability for any
1515s other Miner to enter that market there's
1517s a there's an inherent moat beyond the
1519s already existing modes of upgrades and
1521s leveling
1522s so what we sought to do there was just
1524s take that away and make it so that you
1526s had to participate in this economy you
1529s have to sell what you make and with the
1532s services that you provide in order for
1534s the next player to be um successful what
1536s they do and in doing that that's what we
1538s hope to to not have a moat not have a
1541s long-term mode where somebody's joining
1543s on day 150 and they're intimidated but
1545s we've really I think proven over this
1547s last year that that's not really the
1549s case we have players who join there's no
1551s special starter packs there's nothing
1553s that you get you start and you lay down
1556s your land and you start building and
1557s creating and enter the economy and those
1560s entry barriers are quite low uh you know
1562s players are encouraged to to sell every
1565s single item that they make and produce
1567s every single research paper they're able
1569s to and use their skills to gain
1571s resources on Dad speed we we try to
1574s focus on your labor is what's valuable
1577s not walking up to a table and just
1579s loading labor via your cheap calories
1581s onto the table but your time spent
1583s Gathering raw resources your time moving
1586s materials from one shop to another
1588s that's what we try to Value here and
1590s hopefully we provide that experience to
1592s players when they join they're able to
1594s enter into that economy at any level in
1596s any profession and it really is what
1598s keeps transactions in the server going
1602s um and and that plays into
1604s when you become abandoned as a player
1606s and as Earth was starting to mention
1608s there that your your assets are Stripped
1610s Away your money is stripped away and
1612s those resources are added back into the
1614s server so that even though we operate a
1616s large world that world would become
1618s overpopulated if we if we allowed
1620s everything to remain so we do that
1622s cleanup
1623s um of land resources and assets and
1626s players are able to jump back in and
1629s reclaim old lands you know my first oil
1631s drilling uh path that I started on this
1634s server on Bay one is now I believe just
1637s a general workshop and Cafe
1642s cool it's obviously working because like
1646s just anywhere you go on this map there's
1648s just an amazing
1650s like the infrastructure and the actual
1652s buildings and the decorative items
1657s it's um
1659s that's always been a thing like if you
1660s jump into a server that's this far along
1663s it's it is very intimidating
1666s um or it can be so
1668s just those those
1670s um steps you've got set up there like
1671s it's um
1673s definitely seems to be working
1675s congrats yeah it's uh really you know
1679s like Sheamus said focusing on that labor
1681s we really want you to be able to go mine
1683s or go chop trees or we created like
1686s Earth talked about the transporter role
1688s which has been hugely important you know
1690s we've been able to allow a new player to
1692s just hey you can go sell a couple land
1694s claims you know or there's other ways
1696s you can go sell a couple of your starter
1697s land claims and you have enough to get a
1698s truck pretty quickly and you're able to
1700s start transporting goods around and that
1701s keeps that keeps all the stores churning
1704s and moving and the economy running
1706s everybody driving their trucks around
1707s and and uh you know getting those
1710s deliveries in place
1715s yeah I I concur with Toby they're like
1717s you know
1719s the recipe you have here is clearly very
1722s successful and is working quite well
1725s um
1727s and it's just outstanding to see
1729s everything that's been created and
1732s like you said it's the seventh cycle so
1735s it's been going on for quite a while
1739s um
1741s yeah it's just overall overall you know
1745s it's taking me back a bit because it's
1748s just there's so many things to look at
1750s and so many things to kind of
1752s investigate and see
1754s you know where where is this staircase
1756s leading down to and then it's a secret
1758s sneaky Hideaway Cafe or something and
1761s and just like you never know what's
1763s around the corner when you're walking
1764s around
1766s yeah no our players have found bedrock
1770s they have exploited Bedrock to the
1772s maximum extent
1774s um but yeah that's that's the beauty I
1776s think of Eco is really that
1778s we we have a recipe that we believe
1780s works for our community and there are
1782s many communities out there that want to
1784s have their specific game plays and and
1787s uh you know that's a reason why we've
1788s maintained this but also a reason why we
1791s just recently uh launched another server
1793s that we're also hosting called Mom speed
1795s is we we realize that you know Dad speed
1797s was made for that player who you know
1800s because Jimmy and myself we were kind of
1802s younger dads when we assumed we were
1804s still our younger devs but with very
1806s young children when we first started
1807s this because we just didn't have the
1809s time we did not have the time to
1811s participate in those 30-day runs We join
1813s on day one for three hours and by day
1815s four the next time we have time we're
1817s it's we're overcome by by other events
1820s that made us not competitive in the
1822s market so that's what Dad speed was
1824s about it Still Remains today but we
1826s realized there are players out there who
1827s want to have that Speed Run they want to
1829s say hey let's go as fast as possible
1831s because on Dad speed we do everything we
1833s can to slow you down and to make sure
1835s that people are pulling carts for as
1837s long as possible so that's why we
1839s started mom speed where we took away
1843s um a bit of that but also with the dad
1845s speed challenges of slow skill gains one
1848s skill only but you can Team you can
1850s build uh with ever share whatever with
1853s whomever you want and you've got to
1855s build an insane laser recipe in 30 days
1858s and honestly I don't know if they're
1860s going to be able to hit it in 30 days
1861s and that's just one example of a very
1864s recent development that we're exploring
1866s to try and make sure that we can capture
1868s uh an experience in the dad speed
1871s ecosystem that can be used by anyone who
1874s steps in here and also keep people and
1876s players and aged for the years that we
1879s have and plan to keep hosting gaming
1882s environments for the community here
1887s oh yeah the the world size was
1890s impressively small as well
1892s or uh for the new experimental server
1896s yes I think you can run end to end in
1899s less than 300 meters around the equator
1901s it's it's quite small
1904s yeah so with that Mom speed or between
1906s the size and like I said just the slow
1909s very slow progression and then you've
1912s also as he said we've really jacked up
1915s what you need for the recipe for the
1917s laser so you've got to put in some
1919s strange ingredients so you need like I
1921s don't know a thousand pairs of pants you
1923s know in there you know we kind of made
1925s it so every single skill has to
1927s contribute to the laser which keeps
1930s everyone involved right to the very end
1932s uh and so you know with that and the
1935s small size resources are now very
1937s limited and so you have to start to
1940s barter deals with your neighbor to mine
1942s under his shop you know and uh you guys
1945s have the housing thing I love the
1946s housing uh you know skill point thing
1950s that you have so now with limited space
1953s having a vertical high-rise apartment
1955s building and having one person on the
1958s server maybe supply three or four
1960s housing things housing benefits to
1964s other players that don't have the space
1965s because they're using their space for
1967s their workshop you know it kind of
1968s Fosters that gameplay even yeah now you
1970s can become a landlord
1975s yeah I think I think space is probably
1977s one of the
1979s one of the more underrated difficulty
1982s obstacles that a lot of servers
1985s never really run into in that particular
1988s level
1990s um because
1992s there's there's only really a couple of
1994s a couple of really dense servers where
1996s there's a large world where there's a
2000s high population that is super active
2001s enough to kind of fill that space
2004s whereas
2006s a server would say you know 20 30 active
2009s people playing on a one and a half
2011s kilometer two kilometer world is never
2013s going to run into space issues yeah you
2014s you might butt heads with your neighbors
2016s a bit
2017s to you know a monopoly of that cornfield
2020s or you know that specific super awesome
2023s oil spot
2025s um but you're always gonna be able to
2027s find the resources you require and the
2029s space you need to build your Workshop or
2032s your industrial kind of sector or even
2034s as you say residential housing to get
2037s those bonuses as well
2039s but on a smaller world where you're
2042s suddenly always kind of bumped up
2043s against someone and you need to either
2046s you know collaborate or come to an
2049s economical understanding about
2051s permissions or being allowed to do XYZ
2055s on that property is something that we
2057s took into consideration in particular
2059s for some of the Town stuff that we're
2061s working on
2062s so hopefully that'll that'll also
2064s present a lot of interesting aspects for
2066s you guys
2067s once we push that out to be able to do
2070s like localized loss or specific
2073s permission reasons
2075s um and I think that's that's an
2076s important aspect for us as from the
2078s development team to
2080s you know really keep in mind being all
2082s of these things and seeing kind of how
2084s space is also a limited resource
2089s um
2089s especially with those those those really
2091s really tough requirements that you put
2093s out
2094s oh no I I agree land land is underrated
2097s as it's kind of like in real life it's
2100s it's very much the the one limiting
2102s thing that you can't make more of in the
2104s game really it's kind of it's kind of
2107s there
2108s um you know all on this Dad speed this
2110s long speed server we even uh created uh
2115s agricultural landlord system here
2119s so you've got Farmers gatherers that are
2122s doing their thing but if a person that's
2126s not involved in agriculture you know
2128s they're a smelter and a tailor or
2129s something uh they but they have some
2132s extra land they have some you know
2133s they've been making good money they buy
2135s some land and it's a good agricultural
2137s land they can rent that out we have some
2140s laws in place we've leveraged the Great
2142s Law system to allow them to become an
2145s agricultural landlord and so they can
2147s sort of rent their land out or
2150s agricultural use by those other players
2152s so you know again just kind of providing
2154s another opportunity there for because
2156s here on this long-term server Big World
2159s lots of space so use the space and let
2163s people have fun with uh again sort of
2165s making a tertiary sort of unnamed skill
2168s as a landlord
2171s I know that really comes into a very
2173s difficult part you know of how do you
2175s manage Mining rights
2177s um you know do I want a player to just
2179s be in the mind but not have access to my
2181s chests above and trying to navigate that
2183s through both you know development uh as
2186s a core part of the game as well as just
2189s you know a law implementation I can only
2191s imagine but you know we we try to we try
2194s to do our best to kind of navigate
2196s through those limitations here on bad
2198s speed and and make sure that our ethos
2200s is held up but also players are you know
2204s effective contributors into the economy
2207s um you know and as you can kind of see
2209s here with with some of the things that
2211s we've got we have certain rules like we
2213s have a physics rule in the game where
2214s you know we have it as you know no
2216s floating structure things have to be you
2218s know reasonably uh you know adhering to
2221s the laws of physics so that required
2224s bridge is you know Bridges weren't
2225s allowed on the server for the first
2228s um you know x amount of days until the
2229s proper supports could be made because
2230s human logs couldn't support a bridge it
2233s had to be Stone and it had to be certain
2234s tiers
2236s um and you know because of all that
2238s people are are ramping up materials and
2240s pumping CO2 into the world and we've
2242s jacked up CO2 production
2245s um and and we really made it so that it
2248s was going to be challenging and it was I
2249s mean how many meters of sea rise did we
2251s have this season
2253s I don't think we saw any this season run
2255s we got close
2257s very close here yeah
2260s um but yeah that just kind of goes into
2263s um you know making it challenging enough
2264s uh that it you remain engaged long term
2268s but also that you know it is achievable
2270s it is not an impossible task which I
2272s think is something that remains to be
2273s seen on Mom speed we'll see how we did
2275s on that one
2276s uh but yeah
2280s no it's looking it's looking quite nice
2282s and on on the the sea level threat I see
2285s that you've built a defensive Quay
2287s along the entire Coastline just gonna
2290s protective measure yeah I remember the
2294s chat was crazy
2295s lessons learned from last season yeah
2300s yeah there was some sea rides there and
2302s I think the chat was just going insane
2303s with like oh my God we're at this PP
2305s they passed laws you know you can't run
2307s or you get taxed if your machines are
2309s running when the global parts per
2311s millionaire is at a certain level
2313s um but yeah the players were able I mean
2315s that was player driven you know as
2317s admins we did nothing we just sat by in
2319s fact I think I was pumping my oil
2321s um refineries as much as I could uh
2324s because I had to play in the economy I
2325s had to get money and here's my old oil
2326s refining pad which is no longer an oil
2329s refining pad it is it is now a comfy
2332s little Lounge to sit in and read your
2333s books reclaimed by a new player
2337s yeah quite amazing and you know we we
2340s try to also have the best experience for
2342s players you know we run this this server
2344s is as stripped down as as possible on a
2347s dedicated
2348s um bare metal Linux box top of the line
2351s Hardware uh upgraded every time the
2353s provider has a major upgrade and really
2355s just trying to provide that that best
2357s user experience possible
2359s foreign
2366s both from management and and you guys
2369s are clearly putting in you know a
2371s lot of heart into it making sure that
2373s everyone is having a good time and
2375s making sure that people are behaving and
2377s kind of adhering through the rules that
2379s you've set forth um and so on
2383s um so it's it's it's an amazement to
2386s just you know watch this

2441s biggest our best going the longest also
2444s some of the most amazing Creations I've

2448s active user perspective we're definitely
2450s down but it's hard to say you know how
2452s much longer we're really going to keep
2453s it up and running but we're open to
2455s player feedback that's why we started
2457s mom speed was to give something else to
2459s do while still having the long term so I
2462s mean I wouldn't be too surprised if this
2464s lasts still a couple of more months but
2467s if the player community comes together
2468s and says hey we're really this has been
2470s really great we've enjoyed it we're but
2472s we're ready for the next one and full
2474s transparency and availability with all
2477s this I post on a publicly available
2480s Dropbox all the server files when we're
2481s done so that players can go ahead if
2484s they if they because they should cherish
2486s their their Creations so we have that as
2488s a possibility for them to get the server
2490s files and uh and go ahead and relive
2493s these experiences even far after the
2494s season's over

2790s roles we've had uh you know we have had
2792s people that are you know more dedicated
2795s to like the highways like a department
2797s of highway administrator there's been
2800s roles around uh you know
2802s ecological conservation that are more
2805s around continuing to maintain forests
2808s and things like that uh you know this
2810s season was different in that we did
2812s divide it up into the four continents so
2816s the central government took a very light
2819s role one once we kind of got a lot of
2821s the core things in place it was really
2825s turned over to the four governors of
2827s each one of the continents to kind of
2831s administer and run things as they saw
2832s fit on their continent so there was a
2835s lot of
2837s it was a little bit of light competition
2839s going on there
2841s because one of the things we set up in
2844s our tax system
2845s was that uh if you the more population
2848s your continent had
2850s was good because you're generating a lot
2852s of stuff
2854s but you're you didn't get as much
2857s Kickback from the government in terms of
2859s like uh money from things so he had a
2862s very very small trickle from the outside
2864s whereas if your continent was small
2866s maybe struggling didn't have many people
2868s on it not a lot of production you got a
2870s much higher kind of subsidy and Kickback
2873s from the government so it was uh you
2875s know do you want to live and have your
2877s Workshop uh you know in a place where
2879s you're highly government subsidized or
2882s not you know so there's a lot of player
2884s choices in where you live and where you
2886s build your shop you know that kind of
2888s thing
2890s I really want to show off this some
2892s Wonder wolf sort of amusement park which
2894s was sort of like a destination players
2896s could visit and actually interact with
2898s things
2900s um so there was supposed to be like some
2901s food shops and
2903s and then you could do a um hunting
2907s a game where you'd shoot arrows through
2909s the uh through the waterfall and hope to
2912s hit a Target
2914s and then there was a a wheelbarrow race
2917s track where you'd get that awfully
2919s difficult to control wheelbarrow and try
2921s and get around this sort of
2923s little track here and it was
2924s surprisingly High School game high
2927s school game yeah yeah
2929s and uh then there was a really cool
2932s water slide so you'd climb up just like
2934s you would at a at a Fair amusement park
2937s and then there was water that had been
2939s channeled through
2941s the blocks all the way down
2945s to a slide into the water and then you'd
2947s sort of go through an underground tunnel
2952s um
2953s and then there was even a sauna
2955s underneath
2956s complete with a cloak room
2959s towels
2962s and uh and then also just nearby
2966s obviously a bus stop of course so you
2968s can
2969s get to the Wonder Wharf and uh a ferris
2973s wheel
2974s as well of course
2976s not complete without a ferris wheel
2979s like I said that even even underground
2981s you've got sneaky things hidden away
2983s like that sauna it's just like amazing
2986s amazing clever use of some of these
2989s things
2990s and yeah you know speaking to some of
2993s that uh underground cleverness you know
2995s I remember early on in the in the
2997s beginning parts of this run we had the
2999s various islands and the rule from the
3001s government was hey we don't have the
3002s technology to build the bridges and you
3004s know so that meant that some players had
3006s some interesting decisions because they
3008s were playing with friends and maybe they
3009s settled on different islands and then
3011s they couldn't go trade with one another
3012s easily so you know one of the rules we
3014s had was like Hey physics we have to
3016s operate in physics there has to be a
3017s bridge you have to build it so the
3018s players got crafty and as you can see
3020s here they went underground and they
3023s built a tunnel system that went under
3026s the water and connected these two
3029s islands together with ramps so they
3031s could cart their uh little wooden carts
3035s full of ore in a tunnel that was not
3038s full of water therefore they were
3039s adhering to physics so they it was
3041s interesting because they accomplished
3042s our intent of of living within the world
3045s of physics building this watertight
3047s tunnel but also not breaking the rules
3049s of having a bridge so it's really great
3051s to kind of see those player Solutions
3053s because those government issues and
3055s problems that come up
3057s yeah it's
3060s quite uh so uh
3063s are we uh on my stream at the moment
3066s yeah
3068s so uh some players on um the Olympus uh
3072s Island decided that they would um
3074s build a huge underground uh production
3077s place for all their uh polluting
3079s Industries so a lot of this was started
3082s to be carved out by hand
3084s but it was and it was themed around like
3086s a dwarven-esque style
3090s um so you ended up with some very woven
3092s looking buildings I don't know some of
3093s the rules for no electrical lighting
3097s um and they lined it with stone pillars
3100s as you can see just carved out of the
3102s Rock
3104s and uh
3106s just a really cool
3108s deep underground environment that the
3110s idea the RP idea behind it was to
3112s contain the pollution
3115s um to somewhere that wasn't near
3117s farms and nature or anything like that
3122s and then they put like a large
3123s underground power plant under here as
3125s well

3139s created a fallout shelter and that was
3142s uh they started building it uh really
3144s early on

3218s of handling everything and managing and

3224s how is the government kind of handling
3226s player leaving player joining and kind
3229s of replacement because I'm assuming that
3231s not everyone is not the original
3233s government is going to stick around or
3236s and keep themselves occupied with the
3238s same
3239s job throughout the entire cycle as I'm
3242s presuming that some of the positions are
3244s being changed out and and different
3246s people are doing them
3248s yeah so we we look at this from you know
3251s earlier on we had a lot of good feedback
3253s from the community that you know they
3254s were they were tired in their skills
3256s because it was two skills only when you
3258s get to 100 day 200 you get tired just
3260s doing the same thing so we implemented a
3263s re-education program
3264s that allowed players to you have to Max
3266s to level seven you have to trade in all
3269s of your tables all of your upgrades and
3271s all excess materials of that skill
3273s traded in and the government takes it
3275s the government blows it up at its uh
3278s um
3279s unexploded Ordinance Center and then
3282s you're gifted a new skill
3283s and that helps players who remain to be
3286s continuously re-energizing new things
3288s then as players just simply leave and
3291s depart the server and they they enter I
3293s think we have it in about a month
3294s um when they hit abandoned status but
3296s then we still have kind of a manual
3298s review of okay we've reached out to this
3300s player we've pinged them directly on
3302s Discord a couple of times no response or
3304s they came back and said hey thanks guys
3305s but I'm gonna go ahead and call it quits
3307s you can go ahead and delete my stuff and
3309s then we have workers that are energized
3311s in from the government to go and remove
3313s their claims they physically there's no
3315s admin going around with the dev tool
3317s deleting their stuff we the government
3319s pays players to put in their labor to go
3322s take down that player structure to go
3325s and uh pull up all those materials and
3328s the government officer comes and pulls
3329s up the claims and they auction off that
3331s land if needed or they simply unclaim it
3333s and it's for the next person to grab
3334s onto and that's how we deal with the
3336s kind of player recycling over the the
3338s hundreds of days
3340s well and then as far as the government's
3342s concerned we we encourage open elections
3345s you know so there's nothing that says if
3347s you're a governor there's nothing that
3348s stops somebody else after you're after a
3350s couple weeks when your term is up to to
3353s pick you out you know and run it run an
3355s election run a campaign so we get we get
3358s fresh people in the government
3360s um you know throughout the season so
3362s usually you know we're we had a world
3364s leader in the beginning of the season
3365s and he he stepped down and we've had
3367s different Governors throughout the
3369s season so um we always kind of get the
3372s the fresh meat in there in the
3374s government too and we provide kind of
3376s some basic Frameworks like Seamus was
3377s talking about with the re-education
3379s program that's just a basic thing that
3381s we provide to help players stay
3383s interested but at the same time we allow
3386s this rotation of the players within the
3388s government
3390s their own ideas at the table and we like
3392s to encourage player Freedom not
3395s restrictions we like to encourage
3397s freedoms and encourage better behaviors
3400s that we want to see or that the gameplay
3402s that we kind of agree with you know we
3405s like to incentivize instead of you know
3407s just flat prevents that's usually from
3410s an admin perspective that's what we look
3412s at is let's make sure we're not crushing
3414s player Freedom we want the players to be
3416s able to do what they want and we want a
3418s government that's engaged and free
3421s elections and it's kind of one of our
3423s foundation pieces
3426s yeah I think
3428s that was a good summary of it
3431s um
3432s we've got someone asking shmuel to take
3435s a look at
3436s pumpkin and Olympus Town Hall
3440s um okay
3443s I'm guessing that's one of the persons
3445s involved in building it or someone that
3446s just really likes to build
3450s um getting over there now
3452s you got
3455s a minute or the remaining and then
3459s probably gonna start you want to have a
3461s look at any of the laws
3464s um I was gonna I was gonna check in on
3466s like most servers that run longer time
3469s or kind of involved into not your kind
3472s of standard
3473s under cycled
3476s um there was usually run with
3479s a whole bunch of different mods and and
3481s kind of custom recipes or just general
3484s content mods and and so on so forth
3487s and I believe you're you guys approach
3489s had been kind of hands off on that just
3491s to
3493s got a few I believe
3498s well if we have any yeah other like main
3502s mods that other servers use I think most
3504s of ours are actually all in-house
3506s yeah Jimmy manages our our mod team we
3509s could probably speak a little bit to
3510s that of what they've implemented very
3511s light though
3513s yeah it's mostly we we try to balance
3515s some things one of the things we've done
3517s is kind of taken away the skill books to
3521s make it so you can't just pump out
3522s infinite skill Scrolls so that was one
3524s of the first things we've done
3526s um you know and there's just been some
3528s some minor adjustments to the recipes
3531s such as having like clay involved in the
3534s in the iron recipe and the bloomery and
3537s then pots involved in the iron recipes
3539s at the blast furnace to help tie in some
3542s other
3544s um professions with that
3546s um and and we've seen some good success
3548s with that now it you know as we the
3550s season goes on we've had to make some
3552s other adjustments you know because maybe
3554s something we were too heavy-handed on
3556s and we had to maybe bring it down or we
3558s had to come up with ways to create clay
3561s because Clay is kind of hard to dig so
3564s um you know very minimal
3567s um we do have a pretty good member on
3570s The Mod team who's helped also balance
3573s some things like with the oil
3575s um like some people have had some an oil
3577s spot where you can get you know an
3579s incredible amount of oil if you pick
3581s just the perfect spot so we've kind of
3582s brought that cap down and brought the
3586s lower part up so it's more fair and
3588s getting that Prime oil spot isn't such a
3591s boon for that one person who managed to
3594s claim it or if somebody who didn't you
3596s know somebody who's not even involved in
3597s oil claims that oil spot and the whole
3600s server screwed you know so we've kind of
3602s brought the Caps down made sure there's
3604s a cap on it and brought the lows up
3607s um you know and we've we've done a
3609s couple other minor adjustments and we're
3611s constantly experimenting especially with
3613s Mom speed we're looking at adjusting you
3616s know how calorie consumption works and
3617s that's kind of where we're currently
3619s trying to tackle with what the mod team
3621s can do
3624s nice sounding something quite quite
3627s exciting and
3628s I'll definitely kind of keep an eye out
3630s on
3631s being what that results in because
3633s that's
3634s probably one of the biggest interests
3635s for me outside of the Fantastic builds
3638s you guys have
3640s um just from a main balance perspective
3642s because there's a lot of
3644s a lot of changes that are similar to
3646s those revolving into 10 where some some
3649s new interdependencies between things are
3651s going to come up
3652s I might not appreciate some of those
3655s changes but I think they're gonna be
3658s quite fun for a lot of players and and
3660s combine more of them
3663s um
3664s and especially having that
3665s interdependency more between different
3667s professions especially over some
3670s branches that might not be apparently
3673s involved in in one another
3675s um as you mentioned like clay involved
3677s in in smelting is
3680s um an interesting kind of crossover that
3682s ties in some of the brick working in
3684s there
3686s um
3689s and we tried to make it realistic yeah
3692s it's like molds you know mold for your
3694s clay bars or something like that so you
3697s know that's kind of why we decided to
3699s add clay and and we wanted to you know
3701s we understand that it's not going to be
3703s perfect
3704s um but we just want to make sure that we
3706s have those opportunities as Earth have
3707s talked about for the long duration you
3710s know and and brick you know Brick Layers
3713s tend to kind of fall out but iron is
3715s from you know the second you smelt your
3717s first iron bar to the moment that meteor
3719s drops you need iron you know so that was
3722s a great way to tackle a problem we felt
3726s they're not really a problem but a
3728s balancing for a whole nother profession
3729s keep them relevant throughout yeah
3733s yeah I know I I really appreciate the uh
3736s the effort to dig into that that
3739s particular beast of the gameplay aspect
3741s of it because it is it is quite a
3745s a heavy hitting potential where it's
3748s it's a hit or miss or
3751s things go wildly out of control one way
3754s or another
3755s um and that's always exciting from a
3757s player perspective but also from from
3759s actually doing the changes as well where
3762s minor tweak that might seem
3764s insignificant and can turn out to be an
3766s astronomically impacting decision
3771s it's it's
3773s quite quite impressive to seeing
3775s everyone that
3777s does dabble in it
3780s um have it kind of result and pan out so
3782s greatly
