[2019] I’m making the switch. How do I be a pirate?

I’ve spent a lot of time mining. Basically my entire time within the game. Politics and battles brush me by and I’ve finally decided I want to do something more and take up a life of piracy. Should I just be a destroyer, fit it out and roam low/null sec?
