s | if you if you have put your wristband on |
s | like BAM stroke you did you can take it |
s | off and we'll give you another one but |
s | without further ado please welcome to |
s | the stage CCP Helmer hello everyone you |
s | have brought me to Australia |
s | who here I've been to Iceland okay well |
s | glad to repay the favor it's been very |
s | interesting so far so I am going to make |
s | a presentation which I've called beyond |
s | the friendship machine who here has |
s | heard about the friendship machine okay |
s | nobody that's good I'm gonna explain |
s | that also before I could go beyond it |
s | but you could also call this |
s | presentation like why the hell have been |
s | I've been working on this game for |
s | decades and and also why are people |
s | playing it for decades and here's a |
s | picture of me famously mining park I |
s | said that I lost from my in front back |
s | in 2003 and and I've been working and |
s | playing this game ever since and and we |
s | say this that we are gonna have you |
s | online go on forever |
s | it sounds like crazy talk but every year |
s | we have to the legacy of EVE Online it |
s | becomes more and more of realistic |
s | outcome that human line will truly |
s | outlive us all and I think that the key |
s | of the matter why I've been working on |
s | this game for almost 20 years now and |
s | some people have been playing it for 16 |
s | years is that Eve is really hard it's |
s | hard to play it it's hard to make it |
s | it's pretty brutal it's a it's a cruel |
s | world we have created we often kind of |
s | think about it as a playground and here |
s | are some slides from kind of CCP vision |
s | material but it's happy kids playing in |
s | a playground |
s | doing some things but we all know that |
s | your line is not really like that |
s | it is a playground for sure but that |
s | nanny is not always watching |
s | and and this element of the violent |
s | playground is something we used to talk |
s | about even line when we're making in the |
s | beginning this is actually the first |
s | thing we wrote in the eep script back in |
s | the beginning |
s | death is a serious matter was written in |
s | word and then we all went to Circus and |
s | appears and that's been true ever since |
s | we wanted to build a world that was |
s | cruel but fair I think we've got the |
s | cruelty part sometimes the fairness it's |
s | a work in progress but I'll talk a bit |
s | about that later so newellton is this |
s | huge place and you're small and alone |
s | I know how you start your journey and |
s | it's a big puzzle to solve and it's best |
s | solved with others and in competition |
s | with others I think we need to do a |
s | better job on the big puzzle I think |
s | right now after 16 years you know a |
s | little too much about the game and I'm |
s | hoping in coming years we can catch some |
s | of the mystery and discovery back in |
s | again make it even crueler and make it |
s | even more bigger of a parcel we're doing |
s | some experiments obviously next week and |
s | you'll see some of that in Yves keynote |
s | hopefully not to may not because we also |
s | want to stop explaining the game |
s | sometimes I think we as a company we |
s | explain a little too much what's going |
s | on and and there's there is less room to |
s | really figure out what's going on |
s | so my presentation here is a little bit |
s | about like how we're gonna focus at |
s | different things rather than kind of |
s | explaining what's about to happen in the |
s | game and of course I mean even line is |
s | it's a pretty applica treatment that we |
s | have done together |
s | I think actually we as the company play |
s | a very little small part in actually |
s | what the game has become we I would say |
s | we did a lot in the beginning but you |
s | guys have done a lot more to actually |
s | take it where it is |
s | and I like this quote here particularly |
s | Eamonn line is peerless it's important |
s | and stunts in isolation because no other |
s | developer has even attempted to much |
s | where the doors later on surpass it |
s | it's amazing that is it still true after |
s | all these years and it's really because |
s | of all you guys continue to inspire us |
s | to to work even harder to unlock the |
s | next stage of evolution free and this is |
s | a word cloud that we actually sourced |
s | from when we were doing stories from the |
s | first decade and it's amazing that a |
s | computer game can inspire so many |
s | emotion words which were the most common |
s | words when you talk about your own story |
s | cinema line and of course so many |
s | tattoos so many mattr memories so many |
s | marriages there I am for the first time |
s | marrying people |
s | alfalfa's it was kind of strange request |
s | came to our customer support system can |
s | you marry us at fan fest and I like not |
s | sure but who am I to say no and now of |
s | course we've outsourced it to the space |
s | Pope and and it's like what do you |
s | really do when you have a space Pope |
s | marrying people and Eve Panamint in |
s | Iceland like where do you go from there |
s | like what what's next after that and and |
s | we we parcel over it it's it's not easy |
s | to think about like what is really next |
s | for you online because I mean what you |
s | guys have done like their world record |
s | step and shutters there are certainly |
s | servers that have bitch alert and and we |
s | continue to figure out how to make that |
s | work but aft ortley enough is it's a |
s | pretty easy path to invent new |
s | technology to to make new world records |
s | but what really to blink with eve is |
s | something like we have to mock the |
s | epicness of space Pope's marrying people |
s | books being written |
s | volumes of booking Raider about what you |
s | have done and and really like it's also |
s | been a bit of a sort of a challenge for |
s | me to think of a part-time what is it |
s | really that we're doing like hauling at |
s | a computer game doesn't really matter |
s | what's really going on and the closest |
s | thing I've actually found is from the |
s | the if script itself is that this is was |
s | one of the first words reading about in |
s | online city made of booth is built in |
s | the forest a city made of stone is built |
s | in the mountains for a city made of |
s | dreams is built in heaven and that's |
s | kind of like what we're doing we are |
s | like the mayor team of a city trying to |
s | make the sure the plumbing work and |
s | there are no traffic traffic jams it's |
s | really all of you which have built the |
s | city itself so in order to find out what |
s | to do next |
s | like really to next with Eve other than |
s | adding more spaceships and and more cool |
s | stuff to play with in the playground we |
s | have actually spent a lot of time over |
s | the past two years to dig into it what |
s | really makes it tick and out of that |
s | have come some pretty profound things |
s | which makes I think I can speak everyone |
s | at CCP even more excited to make sure |
s | that even line really goes on forever |
s | and out lives or so and I can summarize |
s | it is that Eve online brings friends and |
s | skills to the people that really encased |
s | in it and I'm gonna take you a little |
s | through that and I will learn love to |
s | have follow-on conversations throughout |
s | this event about some examples of your |
s | from your own life and well first to |
s | whether you agree with the premise or |
s | not so here we have CTP coast he was |
s | actually talking about what we call the |
s | friendship machine at Amsterdam |
s | and us you guys showed in your show of |
s | hands not many people have seen that |
s | talk but I highly encourage you to |
s | what's the recording of of his talk he |
s | really goes deeper into it but I've |
s | taken a few of his slides just to kind |
s | of introduce the concept to you and |
s | since he because there's a bit of an |
s | interesting character before he started |
s | working at CCP he worked for the special |
s | prosecutor office in Iceland unpacking |
s | the financial meltdown of the Icelandic |
s | economy so he spent many years |
s | interrogating blank workers about like |
s | what happened and I met him at some |
s | point then and and and here's a very |
s | many other unique aspects to his to his |
s | life so I just said to him you have to |
s | work at CCP I don't know what you're |
s | gonna do exactly but we'll figure that |
s | out and he started working on the NP he |
s | did like some cool stuff there and but I |
s | think this is exactly the reason why I |
s | thought you said that work at C's began |
s | he started so I asked him about I think |
s | it was 18 months ago |
s | so we have a lot of people that play the |
s | game for decades spent a lot of time and |
s | spent a lot of money on the game I think |
s | I know why but how about the features go |
s | and ask them and and where it came back |
s | with is kind of within the umbrella of |
s | what we thought it was but I think it is |
s | actually more profound than we ever |
s | could imagine so I'm gonna take you a |
s | little bit through that yeah here's a |
s | picture from Ivar Statham where we were |
s | very happy that a lot of people kind of |
s | agreed with what the findings show so a |
s | lot of it has to do with this fact that |
s | email and builds relationships |
s | sips the pills of various relationships |
s | can be friendships it can be enemies |
s | it can be pretty deep stuff and contrary |
s | to what people think they think that |
s | even line is all about PvP and and and |
s | corporate scamming it's actually a |
s | maturity or the biggest segment of it |
s | players self-identify as helpers so |
s | their core identity in the game is to |
s | help others and we have actually found |
s | that people that identify themselves as |
s | helpers have the highest engagement like |
s | they the most if players are the people |
s | that want to help others and I think |
s | that's a little bit counter to at least |
s | the mainstream narrative of a team |
s | online but when you think about such a |
s | crew place as in online there certainly |
s | is a lot of opportunity to help people |
s | and we have found through the deserts |
s | it's less the most valuable thing we can |
s | to what CCP is to find more ways to |
s | connect people with each other because |
s | again as I talked about in the beginning |
s | the fact that the world is cruel it's a |
s | big massive portal coping with all the |
s | complexity and chaos and uncertainty of |
s | EVE Online is best done by connecting |
s | with others and overcoming those |
s | obstacles and what did we learn and here |
s | are some quotes the study that we did |
s | spent most of last year doing so you |
s | develop social network I'm flying with |
s | the same crew for 10 years the |
s | reputation you develop the stuff you |
s | build together |
s | it's not just a computer game it's a |
s | world with a social network it's a |
s | virtual world |
s | want to teach people but Eve is about |
s | this is to find meaning in something |
s | like building relationships and finding |
s | connections we became hardcore because |
s | we made social connections not the other |
s | way around |
s | leader of an aggressive not static and |
s | through all these theories we found like |
s | a segment of players which belong to |
s | this hopper segment which we call our |
s | elite player profile so people in this |
s | profile play about average 4.4 hours a |
s | day average tenure is seven point one |
s | year and the number of articles at 13 |
s | yeah exactly thank you for your business |
s | it helps a lot if we could get it up to |
s | 20 it would be great so yeah it's pretty |
s | elite and what characterizes them or |
s | seriously you and connections are |
s | absolutely the key element of five |
s | people end up in this elite segment I |
s | always want to be indispensable to my |
s | Corp after historic study connecting |
s | with players I started building out and |
s | connect and expand my network up to 13 |
s | it wasn't until I joined the Corps that |
s | things really clicked I think that's |
s | true for most players when that Corp |
s | quit for example I quit the game but I |
s | came back eventually important you court |
s | the first time I realized this game was |
s | for me and I would stick around was when |
s | a group depended on me for important |
s | tasks when you're involved with others |
s | people are relying on you in a changing |
s | environment then it moves from being a |
s | game into a hobby so it's a lot of |
s | overcoming obstacles changing |
s | environment relying on others and |
s | relying on your relationship and Trust |
s | connections go beyond the game quite |
s | easily because of the immersing of Eve |
s | Eve has kept immersive connections |
s | better than any other game it's very |
s | important to me I'm a diplomat I like |
s | building connections I enjoy the game |
s | more when I'm helping others achieve |
s | their goals even lets you play the game |
s | that way |
s | so our early players characteristics are |
s | their helpers the commentators and |
s | reliable and willing to put in hard work |
s | and again |
s | he was hurt extremely resilient and we |
s | have found through these studies like |
s | Eve increases resilience in people and |
s | resilience is an extremely marketable |
s | skill in the world today goal-oriented |
s | we have so many former if players at CCP |
s | and that's obviously no chance |
s | occurrence this is exactly what you want |
s | to find in people when you're hiring |
s | them into companies with relative |
s | companies or real companies reoccurring |
s | themes they have experienced deep |
s | emotional events in the game but the |
s | negative ones are key sabers early on |
s | like death is a serious matter the first |
s | thing we wrote in the if script turns |
s | out to be the thing that actually makes |
s | the game but it is today |
s | spent the two first two months mining to |
s | get a hulk then i got greedy and talking |
s | to knoll and lost the hook yes you |
s | wouldn't be both this was a key moment i |
s | realized how much time cost this game is |
s | a drive and dedication and i decided i |
s | have to learn more so it don't make |
s | these same mistakes again social |
s | connections are key reasons for why |
s | players become elite players the point |
s | when you move from being just a monkey |
s | in the universe to understanding what |
s | american is why work break out why |
s | logistics are important that is when I |
s | started to want to gift my knowledge of |
s | the game on words and teach players why |
s | they are important my friends in the |
s | game are more important than cane ships |
s | wealth or power and elite players pursue |
s | ambitious goals if there is something |
s | impossible I want to get it I can relate |
s | when I was hired to CCP in 2000 after a |
s | long recruiting session involving a lot |
s | of alcohol |
s | just the authentic way I said to them so |
s | guys you know this can't be done |
s | yeah yes kind of okay that's good that's |
s | what I started my drive in the game was |
s | when I saw the top report on the culture |
s | alp store which was a raven ship and i |
s | decided i wanted to get it it's |
s | important to feel like you're a part of |
s | something and that you can influence it |
s | players are resilient |
s | I like the smack in the face complexity |
s | of the game for sure |
s | and any players are of course in play |
s | run corpse I don't think that's a crisis |
s | anyone and this is the reason why I'm |
s | online is still alive and thriving as it |
s | is is because of this aspect of it |
s | online and by us understand to get much |
s | more deeper understanding the pathways |
s | of how people become entangled in the |
s | front seat machine is something we will |
s | be strengthening a lot more going |
s | forward to make the game even harder on |
s | some level not in the beginning though |
s | talk a little bit about that maybe a |
s | little bit too difficult in the |
s | beginning but certainly in the end and |
s | find these ways to allow people to bond |
s | together to overcome the obstacles they |
s | either make for each other or the game |
s | makes on its own but there are also some |
s | active patterns which we have found |
s | which are tearing apart social networks |
s | that being allowed to have more |
s | time to form together and actually |
s | through this 30 this 30 is the reason |
s | why we did the changes to the worldcat |
s | Eurasian system is that we found there |
s | was an extreme amount of asymmetry |
s | between the people which were having way |
s | too lost little risk in bullying new |
s | players who were in the early stages of |
s | forming these kind of kind of bonds |
s | because the the the challenge of growing |
s | a maligned from beyond where we are now |
s | is that the complexity and challenges |
s | which are so good for long-term |
s | retention they are causing the fact that |
s | the even line is kind of stuck at its |
s | current level because we're not able to |
s | get people quickly enough into this |
s | magical forensic machine so we we made |
s | this change but now we're into this what |
s | I call beyond the friendship machine so |
s | we have this aspect of iam online where |
s | it's giving people new relationships and |
s | if you read any study from the World |
s | Trade Organization or World Health |
s | Organization that the number of |
s | relationships you have is the best |
s | future determinator of how long you live |
s | how healthy you are and how happy you |
s | are |
s | so by compiling these two things |
s | together we have found out that if makes |
s | people live longer be healthier and be |
s | happier and I think that is pretty |
s | magical to have accidentally created |
s | something there is a true not positive |
s | in the world but wait there's more that |
s | wasn't enough so here we are to the |
s | friendship machine so in 2009 we made |
s | this video called the butterfly effect |
s | which kind of goes about like every |
s | little detail of this universe every |
s | decision can have repercussions |
s | throughout the universe of EVE Online |
s | and and if you live in Iceland which is |
s | also a crew but fair dangerous place you |
s | know like a lot of the difficulties in |
s | your environment they build enormous |
s | amount of survival mechanisms in |
s | yourself and because we made the email |
s | line world cruel but fair and as we saw |
s | on the story before if players are |
s | extremely resilient it has a lot to do |
s | with the cares of the universe that is |
s | it online both in our social dimension |
s | but also in our in a game dimension |
s | and there are these elements we use as |
s | guidance they're like four key |
s | motivations for yourself to be half be |
s | about doing something that you want to |
s | spend your time on and a lot of it has |
s | to do with the two bottom L elements |
s | mastery and autonomy |
s | so obviously extrinsic motivation in EVE |
s | Online is mostly just done in a |
s | classical economic sense you want to |
s | have more eyes Kay purpose comes a lot |
s | through the friendship machine but |
s | mastery and autonomy email line creates |
s | an extreme amount of mastery and |
s | autonomy because the world is so chaotic |
s | harsh cruel and and chaotic that you |
s | have to build self-reliance II and |
s | yourself to be able to cope with it and |
s | I actually recruited a social media |
s | listening company earlier this year and |
s | they had had an artificial intelligent |
s | robot wade through everything on the |
s | internet that has been written about him |
s | online read it included I I feel dearly |
s | for the poor soong meetee a robot that I |
s | read all that and I asked them to to see |
s | if Eve players were talking about online |
s | whether Eve had made them stronger as |
s | people and and the and the verdict came |
s | back that this is very much true so can |
s | II hear you for real-world business |
s | success so this is actually an email I |
s | got I think in February this year where |
s | on if player I had wanted his own |
s | company in Canada and I was having |
s | amazing success and he marked out for us |
s | how the skills he learned in him online |
s | made him successful with running his |
s | |
s | in Canada so recruitment for |
s | corporations is like album sales court |
s | members customer trusting you trade hubs |
s | Amazon major North America retails the |
s | best urban staple like and I'm gonna not |
s | read it all but he basically kind of |
s | laid out the path on how he got his |
s | company to eight million dollars in |
s | revenue than eighty seven percent profit |
s | build ratio because even line taught him |
s | how to do it and and we have men in many |
s | stories like this yeah he made four |
s | hundred thousand dollars in profit last |
s | year I think that's pretty epic you |
s | playing a computer game and you go for |
s | both domination and here are some of the |
s | of the quotes we found in a few hours I |
s | will find if I managed to Larry's mercy |
s | at Pacific an epoxy development for |
s | Atwater skillet into leadership of the |
s | national productivity Australia I don't |
s | I don't know exactly who wrote this are |
s | you are you here do do people recognize |
s | this no ok well it's out on the internet |
s | Eve made the economy classics I took and |
s | call it immediately real to me and gave |
s | me an outlet to practice skills and |
s | theory as I was learning even if you |
s | don't get into industry or trading |
s | concepts like arrow ROI and opportunity |
s | cost will serve you well in staying in |
s | the block when it comes to exploration |
s | and PvP so great many examples of even |
s | line preparing people and giving skills |
s | because the world is hard and chaotic |
s | and relies on wanting together with |
s | others trains you for success in reality |
s | as well and so here are some of the |
s | science we're coming up with as a |
s | consequence of this so I like using the |
s | muscle of hierarchy of needs as a kind |
s | of a roadmap on how we map all these |
s | insights which we've come |
s | to learn about the game and basically |
s | kind of the master of hydrogen beats is |
s | divided into this kind of two halves one |
s | of it is safety fairness low and |
s | belonging and the second part is self |
s | esteem and self-actualization I actually |
s | don't like how the master hierarchy of |
s | needs has been turned into a pyramid |
s | it's actually master of himself didn't |
s | praise it like that so it makes somehow |
s | one more important than the other but |
s | these things very much built together |
s | like you can build yourself and your |
s | skillset through him online and it gives |
s | you friends and these things they |
s | intertwine and they rotate around each |
s | other Eva help Mia get ahead in my |
s | professional life my best pros helped me |
s | when I was down like this is kind of the |
s | yin and yang like that your support |
s | network and your skill set makes you |
s | overcome obstacles overcoming obstacles |
s | and becoming stronger gives you skill |
s | set that allows you to dominate any |
s | aspect of human life and this is some of |
s | the road map I'm hoping we'll be able to |
s | even strength thereby making the game |
s | harder and finding even more ways to |
s | connect people into the social network |
s | of your life so here are some of the the |
s | max of skills we have found out through |
s | the social media listening robot that |
s | crowdsource all the internet a lot of it |
s | maxes into the emotional cloud words we |
s | got from Eve the second tacit I showed |
s | in the beginning trust loyalty accuracy |
s | a leadership management openness |
s | ownership authorities kept system |
s | shocking even line trained skepticism |
s | people skilled politics networking |
s | dealing with consequences language |
s | skills getting back up factional warfare |
s | propaganda skills programming excel |
s | skills |
s | there was actually a player that asked |
s | me last night |
s | so Hilmer what do you think when people |
s | call it excellence pace I think it's |
s | also well yeah it prepares you for life |
s | believe me I don't know company |
s | spreadsheets run the world just like the |
s | real world is run on spreadsheets even |
s | line is run as presents and we have |
s | found this interesting element that when |
s | it belonged to two worlds the e worlds |
s | and reality |
s | it totally trains you and having this |
s | schism of having two separate personas |
s | makes you learn even faster yep my job |
s | is going well I've been here since Jan |
s | 11 selected as a tech lead for a half a |
s | million dollar project in Saudi Arabia |
s | in West Palm Beach tonight setting up a |
s | date with a beautiful director of |
s | Discovery Channel bought my dream car |
s | sweep house on the lake because of me |
s | you win the match it what it does thing |
s | like this after having toiled on this |
s | game for two decades it's like yes it is |
s | a good thing the spreadsheet simulator I |
s | got a lot of quotes about the players |
s | learning Excel skills and thus be able |
s | to land a massive jobs or be the the |
s | Excel wizard |
s | okay actually I uh neither ironically |
s | it's actually interesting but I want to |
s | also help all of us do we sometimes talk |
s | about this jokingly that Iman line is |
s | making you better as a person and in |
s | life and allowing it to land jobs so we |
s | see a lot of these kind of coaching |
s | words where people are not really |
s | willing to say it I'm gonna get us to |
s | the place where you can I on ironically |
s | used Eve to land my current job because |
s | business controller and one of my |
s | biggest construction companies in the |
s | world they asked me for example of |
s | leadership FC and Corp Alliance for the |
s | past nine years and wanted to know how |
s | familiar I was with Excel spreadsheet |
s | online my nickname at work is now the |
s | axle guru while some call Eve mockingly |
s | the excel simulator turns out to be |
s | valuable training tool for some of the |
s | most demanding jobs and player are using |
s | it for leverage so Eve is real the |
s | friends who make become the most elite |
s | tight-knit community in the world a |
s | secret group of crazy talented people |
s | your Eve skills are real skills they let |
s | you take control of your life in reality |
s | because you need all these skills to |
s | take control if you're a of life they |
s | make you better at reality and it's not |
s | just me saying it we crowd sourced all |
s | of the internet for all these stories to |
s | find it they're true and they are this |
s | is actually something I'm obsessing |
s | quite a bit about that CCP itself it's |
s | this difference between a growth mindset |
s | and a fixed mindset and I think on Eve |
s | as an excellent training ground in |
s | failure is an opportunity to grow I |
s | think all of us here that I've had some |
s | applique yrs in your line have learned |
s | the look through how you if you press |
s | aver and just become better at what you |
s | suck at then it can become better at |
s | everything and there are very two |
s | distinct views on this some people |
s | believe that you're born in a static way |
s | there are the porns smart or you're born |
s | done I'm very much not to believe it or |
s | not I've seen so many examples of people |
s | that |
s | you might think we're not smart but |
s | either become smart or we're just really |
s | smart it just didn't have a great way to |
s | express it and even line really nurtures |
s | this growth mindset I can learn to do |
s | anything about challenges help me grow |
s | my effort and aptitude to determine my |
s | abilities feedback is constructive I |
s | like to try new things I'm inspired by |
s | the success of others and here is just |
s | kind of even more of an inventory of all |
s | the skills I'm not going to read all of |
s | them but you can screen crop it and read |
s | it as a governor |
s | so you online really gives you friends |
s | and skills and this is what we have |
s | found out by by talking to you guys so |
s | going forward I hope that we can |
s | strengthen these aspects of you online |
s | even more obviously some of it will come |
s | through game design and in expansions |
s | and all that but this will be much more |
s | of a guiding light than it has been |
s | before because this is extremely precise |
s | and and granular and very actionable for |
s | us to act so as we go about this journey |
s | of setting Emeline off for the third |
s | decade this will be a lot out roadmap |
s | and because I used the the muscle of |
s | hierarchy of needs of also using this |
s | inside the company because the eve |
s | hierarchy of needs so where we marked |
s | kind of the the the needs of human line |
s | like physiological needs and Eve is like |
s | the SSO the launcher it doesn't cross |
s | each 64,000 x12 safety and fairness are |
s | about fairness of the playground no |
s | buffeting no scamming at least within |
s | reason no cheating no were tech bullies |
s | love and belonging is about the forensic |
s | machine esteem like all the alliances |
s | corporation CSM sarah tells the history |
s | of Eve and then self-actualization is a |
s | lot about this in online giving a real |
s | skills to succeed in EVE Online and to |
s | succeed succeed in the world at large |
s | and we'll be hearing about elements like |
s | if 64 |
s | keynote so you will be seeing us doing a |
s | lot more sort of this empty fundamental |
s | sort of tech strengthening of even line |
s | to really kind of set up stronger |
s | foundation for even line for it to go on |
s | for decades to come |
s | because even though we have already |
s | always found it very important having |
s | all this profound insight that email and |
s | is an apt benefit to the world gives us |
s | even more ambition to take it even |
s | further like it's not just us playing |
s | it's not just important because it's |
s | important for CTP and I'm running CTP |
s | it's important because it's important so |
s | you will see a lot more from us on this |
s | front to do this kind of deeper more |
s | investment in these plantations with |
s | would make any sense for us to do one |
s | last week |
s | we're gonna have this go on forever you |
s | will also see us do more of these kind |
s | of elements where we did 10,000 person |
s | fleet fight experiment aren t you see |
s | this will take more years to harvest out |
s | to unlock the potential for this into it |
s | but we will continue to do this kind of |
s | advanced R&D and I would love if you can |
s | come and help us doing this just like |
s | you did a TVC and just like you've |
s | helped us bang on the 64 bit version it |
s | really helps us find ways to to have him |
s | online go on forever |
s | this is kind of the the focus area for |
s | CCP today so while all these things |
s | about the friendship machine Eve is hard |
s | it's cruel but fair all these elements |
s | are really important for the long term |
s | retention of EVE Online game online is |
s | really held back by the first seven days |
s | we we have often showed this element |
s | with pride that this is the learning |
s | curve of you online this was maybe cool |
s | in 2003 it's just not working in 2019 |
s | like the world has moved on many cycles |
s | and also what not many players realize |
s | on earth even if developers is that the |
s | game is extremely a lot more complicated |
s | now in 2019 than it was in 2003 in 2003 |
s | we had like 30 spaceships and you have |
s | to pick one of 30 now we have 300 |
s | Aesop's now we have so many features and |
s | dimensions which is the clutter in the |
s | UI so the eve has gotten harder and |
s | harder and harder as the year have |
s | progressed because of the complexity has |
s | increased and the optionality has |
s | increased and people's patience for |
s | complexity in the beginning as going |
s | lower and lower and lower and just to |
s | show you how bad it is is that this is |
s | our thermal performance as we call it so |
s | I took a week of 2019 and this is what |
s | happened in the week 7 in 2019 so we got |
s | 25,000 people to register to a moment |
s | for the first time which i think is a |
s | lot more than people think I think often |
s | people think if it's a static thing |
s | there's a player base it's just playing |
s | him online it is not the case |
s | Emeline is like a river that is |
s | constantly flowing and there's like a |
s | silt at the bottom that builds off after |
s | year after year |
s | but the flow is a lot bigger than the |
s | playerbase we got a lot more people to |
s | play in online for the first time then |
s | played it for the tenth time so every |
s | week week after round 20,000 to 25,000 |
s | people to sign up to the game out of |
s | those half or about 12,000 log in for |
s | the first time so we have a massive |
s | thing to fix there then seven days later |
s | 90% of people have given up so there is |
s | an aspic focus that CCP needs to apply |
s | to this and we need to apply it |
s | both forum online but also because of |
s | what I've talked about before like 'man |
s | line is giving your friends and skills |
s | but in the world we experience this |
s | loneliness epidemic if you if you study |
s | people in the world today how many |
s | friends they have now versus people 10 |
s | years ago or 20 years ago people have |
s | less and less meaningful deep |
s | friendships so the world is destroying |
s | itself and again friends safely to |
s | longevity health and happiness so the |
s | world is gonna live shorter be less |
s | healthy and last |
s | happy because of loneliness because |
s | reality doesn't give you enough friends |
s | so we have all these people everyday |
s | 25,000 people trying to be a part of the |
s | friendship machine just apically failing |
s | at it |
s | because we are actively failing at it I |
s | think us CCP we have the role for the |
s | first 7 days then you guys can help a |
s | lot in the what's to follow a lot of the |
s | new player organization like brave are |
s | doing a phenomenal job in helping people |
s | after the first 7 days but we CCP need |
s | to do a lot better on this so you will |
s | see us really investing in making sure |
s | that we hope people on board into that |
s | where you can embrace them into the |
s | friendship machine to help them cope |
s | with it because while it is hard and |
s | that's amazing and it's awesome it |
s | should not be this hard in the beginning |
s | it's harder now than it was when a lot |
s | of us started playing it online but |
s | where you guys can come in and help us |
s | is that people are a little shy in the |
s | beginning even if they may make it past |
s | the first 7 days but if you seek them |
s | out every eve organization that is |
s | seeking out new players is doing a |
s | massive benefit to the world so people |
s | that have sought out to join |
s | corporations are two times more likely |
s | to be active than people that are coming |
s | into corporations on their own so all |
s | the new player organizations that are - |
s | in god's work within EVE Online are |
s | doing magic to the game I'm going to |
s | call out Akane Empire who's been doing |
s | this for over a decade 10,000 people |
s | have gone through it 82% of those |
s | players are still playing a year later |
s | even light is alive and thriving because |
s | of this effort like nothing that CCP |
s | dars has this level of retention power |
s | compared to what new player |
s | organizations do anything like nothing |
s | comes close we will be doing things like |
s | the fleet hunter to help with this I've |
s | seen the excel sheets and the map |
s | the people to do to organize new player |
s | fleets and we will invest in areas to |
s | make it to make it easier but please |
s | continue to do this this is helping |
s | massively try to get them to die with us |
s | that's the key operative death is |
s | serious it's a serious matter |
s | devastating loss is really like we now |
s | call it a magic moment like the moment |
s | you lose your first spaceship is the |
s | moment whether either you have enough |
s | understanding of why it happened or you |
s | have the social network to help you |
s | through it then you play forever if you |
s | don't immediately quit and never come |
s | back understanding why it happened a ray |
s | of hope that you can respond to get back |
s | on your feet and get revenge and social |
s | support during the magic moment that is |
s | what makes an elite II player and we use |
s | this kind of social interaction theory |
s | this is actually pour out from the CIA |
s | believe it or not so to make friendship |
s | than it is proximity frequency duration |
s | and intensity and where iman line has |
s | its magic the intensity of what you can |
s | experience together is really why human |
s | line is so effective at making new |
s | friendships if you talk to birth parents |
s | that have gone to war they say that |
s | playing game online is a lot like going |
s | to work with people like going to an |
s | actual war I've never done that with |
s | people that have they like an even line |
s | to the same experience and making |
s | friendships we recently made new friends |
s | in South Korea I was therapy for I came |
s | here and we are also making these kind |
s | of changes because we want to take a lot |
s | more long-term outlook on Emeline it's |
s | actually if you study all nations of the |
s | world the Koreans have the most |
s | long-term outlook of any nation so |
s | that's why we are partnered off the |
s | Koreans it's also but it's allowing me |
s | to come here I was in the neighborhood |
s | even if it takes 10 hours |
s | coming from Korea and I believe that all |
s | these changes we will be doing this year |
s | based on this research and this kind of |
s | new insights about him online will truly |
s | unlock the next dates of evolution for |
s | EVE Online allow it to Co go on forever |
s | and then I hope to see you all at fan |
s | fest next year bring it back to Iceland |
s | 2nd and 4th of April 2020 thank you |
s | [Applause] |
s | yeah I can take a couple of questions it |
s | might be you but let's see you're kind |
s | of new nobody wants to ask you more |
s | question he's not that scary a ramen |
s | Kara logic your elite player base what |
s | percentage of the overall player |
s | population is the elites so for this |
s | study we we studied the top 1% but it's |
s | a it's a grading scale but there's |
s | thirty was done by finding people that |
s | have spent the most amount of time in |
s | EVE like actual time not just staying |
s | logged in and we took the 1% of that |
s | place and that is the foundation of this |
s | theory how many a player's rate on this |
s | criteria we have not on that sort of |
s | extrapolation from these Co results |
s | hello hello so in today's gaming world |
s | it's not all pcs and it's not all |
s | consoles mobile plays a huge role and |
s | definitely the shooter world the Battle |
s | Royale world is huge so obviously |
s | everyone who plays Eve is interested in |
s | the mobile future of Eve and the kind of |
s | FPS type role of Eve and the |
s | cross-pollination that could be possible |
s | to bring people from let's say they |
s | start in one and bring into there when |
s | do you think that the Eve player base |
s | will hear more detail about |
s | ccp's plans so we are making serious |
s | posts into mobile on many different |
s | fronts one is we are improving the |
s | companion up to Eve and we will have |
s | more |
s | talk about in upcoming events but the |
s | biggest thing we're doing is the |
s | collaboration we're working with naty's |
s | where we're making evac O's which is |
s | basically Iman line as you know it from |
s | PC on mobile we have remade the game |
s | from scratch we've worked with nineties |
s | or for almost three years on kind of |
s | built in Eve anew and we're hoping to |
s | release that this year that is it's |
s | almost like an artifact from the future |
s | when you when you have an iPhone and you |
s | play online in its full glory on a phone |
s | it's it's a little mind poking so I |
s | think from that step we will learn a lot |
s | when it comes to the shooters then we |
s | announced earlier in the year that we've |
s | taken project Noah back to formula but |
s | there is still much going on and |
s | hopefully at fan fest next year in |
s | Iceland we will have more to say about |
s | that but we took that back to formula 2 |
s | on port what we learned from our latest |
s | posts and also what is going on in the |
s | world as per your comments Amy calculate |
s | I'm mati blog |
s | speaking of puzzles I looked online I |
s | can't quite crack this one puzzle do you |
s | have a road map is it a photo so the in |
s | terms of like the right map for next |
s | year because I know that in the past he |
s | always had a really really good really |
s | really good road map online but yeah we |
s | kind of hit this point now where we're |
s | saying what's what's happening like |
s | what's what's going for what is the next |
s | n number of cycles look like and how can |
s | we get behind you behind that yeah so |
s | that there's a bit of a trough we sucked |
s | every time we were making these road |
s | maps and three variants and all that |
s | have now been managing if development |
s | directly in interactive years and and a |
s | lot of it comes we're making these road |
s | maps to present them at evac |
s | like this then if you look at our |
s | success rate on delivering on roadmaps |
s | is actually not very high so the roadmap |
s | starts to become entertainment in and of |
s | themselves so I want to unwind a little |
s | bit this this constant need for hours to |
s | make road maps to make powerpoints to |
s | present the device because it also takes |
s | the mystery away from the universe when |
s | we put ourselves in the in the end the |
s | posture of being developers working on a |
s | game with this roadmap but explaining |
s | way too much what's going on and it just |
s | takes the excitement away so it's a bit |
s | of a tricky balance to manage how much |
s | ambition we have for EVE Online but I |
s | want to get more to like actually |
s | delivery value into the game to allow |
s | you to discover rather than be selling |
s | you on road maps and what's to come and |
s | I know it's gonna take some while for us |
s | to figure that out because the the act |
s | of making rope marks making them at |
s | events and then delivering on those are |
s | just a common way to do this but I want |
s | to calm that down a bit we obviously |
s | have our own rope map internally but I |
s | would rather have a work speak for |
s | itself through the vel delivery in the |
s | game alright my friends thank you very |
s | much this is Bill Maher I go we will be |
s | taking a quick break after this thank |
s | you |
s | you |
s | [Laughter] |
