I don’t think anyone wants the timer to go away completely. They just should have been more clear about their own interpretation of the timer, cause I think almost everyone assumed that when the timer ended it meant that the next season would start. Also I find it funny that he says the timer is also used so that “people wouldn’t be upset if it ended early”. How can he actually say that when they’ve extended both seasons already, it really doesn’t look like they’d ever release a season early.

Yeah!

So since then we've added to the Trello board that we want to ensure we're more player-centric with end-of-season comms, and in general, make that timer far clearer. Most people did assume that end-of-timer means the new season would start - and that's completely fair enough, because I guess, what else would it mean unless we clearly articulate that meaning in-game and on our channels.

So it sounds like you guys are gonna keep the timer, which I think is the right move. I also think that most people would really hate it if the game existed without a season live, which is something that Oliver mentioned and almost made it sound like this was gonna happen. You guys should probably use the timer as a countdown for the next season, cause most people see the timer as useless if it isn’t that.

It's good that we got feedback on what to do/not do with the timer as that incidentally means things have changed since our earlier posts - but we're still in discussion! Likely something we'll fix with wording rather than removal, but we'll update the Trello ticket and I'll post here when we have some further communications on it.

Yeah you should be able to just resume grinding as normal!

I don't think we are able to add a countdown to the next season - we don't know that date exactly when the current season launches. We can only countdown to a date that is slightly before the next season - then we can do double fame points until the real date.

I said "remove it" as we were discussing through options with the Devs and that was one of the ideas we were chatting through, the Devs are now in favour of just making it way more clear that it's counting down to the "winding down" part of the season, rather than counting down to the "end of the season" which suggests "the start of the next season"

Yeah. Differentiating the end of one season with the beginning of another is a bit odd.

I’m glad to see Mediatonic is not actually cutting off the ability to grind seasons 2 rewards until season 3 is ready. Maybe that was their initial intention and they decided against it because it would be perceived very poorly, hence the jumbled messaging.

As dumb as it sounds, many companies do this. There have been gaps in which no battle pass is running in Brawlhalla and Rocket League. Brawlhalla seems to do this intentionally, with every battle pass this far ending weeks before the scheduled release of the next one.

Warframe makes entire “intermission” nightwave series (essentially free battle passes) because of how long the gaps between nightwave series are.

I genuinely have no idea why any of these companies don’t just let their previous battlepasses run until the new ones are ready. No one would expect new weekly challenges or tiers but they might as well allow players who aren’t my finishes to continue working on them.

Of the examples given, I think Rocket League genuinely had some delays related to the cross platform free to play launch.I haven’t been playing it long so I can’t speak to whether downtimes between rocket passes were common.

Warframe does not charge for Nightwave so I really do not understand their rationale.

As for Brawlhalla, perhaps the battle passes are designed with the intention of being a very specific length so that some players will be forced to pay extra for the final tiers but enough will finish on time as to not get bad press. With that mindset, each battle pass would need to end on schedule regardless of whether the next one is ready to go.

One problem is that we actually don't have a locked in release date for the next season when we launch the current one. We have an estimated one in mind, that we work towards - but it always adjusts as we get closer to the time. Making games is a creative task and you can only predict how long things will take to a certain extent. We don't want our team to crunch to hit deadlines, or work outside of normal hours and burnout. So we hold off announcing the official date until we have full confidence that it is possible to hit it.

That's the issue with the timer - we're literally not counting down to the next season, we don't have that date, really. We're counting down to a date that is slightly before the next season.

We're now thinking we won't remove the timer but we'll try to find a way to display it... In a way that attempts to explain what it means (that the season will start winding down at that date, and the next season will start soonish afterwards)

A phase without any season live is just bullshit overall. Like, if you're not gonna release the new season then at least extend the current season instead of ending it. Not all people completes their battlepass on time. Really wish they never communicated that way trying to cover their asses and just be straight up honest when season 3 will start.

We've extended season 2 into season 3 and that period will have double fame points. We announced that yesterday when it was fully confirmed with the Devs.

I think one thing that really rankles people is when MT use sterile language like "misunderstanding." Misunderstanding implies a lack of blame. There is certainly blame to assign here, and it's not on the community.

Let's look at a set of facts:

  1. Season 1 had a countdown timer
  2. Season 2 began when the Season 1 countdown ended
  3. Season 2 had a countdown timer
  4. Season 3 will not begin at the end of the S2 countdown timer, nor was it ever intended to.

Can anyone spot the logical inconsistency? Silly community for "misunderstanding." Tsk tsk.

Season 2 did NOT start when the Season 1 counter ended.

Season 1 ended - and then we announced the release date of Season 2.

Then, during the gap between the two seasons, we announced that we'd have double fame points.

The devs are going to work on it some more so that it does a better job to communicate what it's supposed to.

I hope we're able to do the double fame points at the end of each season as a standard thing, moving forward.

I try to avoid 'blaming the devs' because, yes, it is our fault, it was a poorly designed feature - but it wasn't done on purpose. It was just an oversight. They're not deliberately trying to harm the community.

The countdown poorly communicates what it is supposed to communicate - so it's fallen on the Community team to try and explain it outside of the game... which has been really difficult to do. The Dev team are going to revisit it, and improve it.

Lol for real, she's directly contradicting what Oliver said in that stupid discord post. If a 'season' is just the fame path and leveling up, and the season ends on December 10th, how does it make sense that you can continue leveling up after December 10th?

We weren't able to confirm that Season 2 would continue until yesterday. We've now extended it and added double Fame Points during that time.

It's not a contradiction - it's based on new information we announced yesterday.

This perfectly sums up what’s going on rn

lol!

Unfortunately, though, the other side of the problem is that we're not able to communicate when the next season begins when a new season begins - because we don't have 100% confidence where it will land 2 months in advance.

We can't make the countdown count to a date that hasn't been locked in yet.

We're not going to remove the countdown now - but change how it's worded, to make it clear that the Season ending is not the next one beginning necessarily.

The Double Fame points time between seasons is something that I hope we do on every season, to fill the gap between the 'end date' and the 'start date'.

I only suggested removing the countdown because its currently doing a REALLY bad job at explaining what it actually means.

yesterday u/trichoglossusbee said that the issue was not about the date being changed or unknown, he said they had a solid date for s3 that never changed. so why can't we just be informed about said date at the point where the devs confirm it? even if it's mid season, or two weeks ago. instead, we need to be searching for leaks pages all over because we don't get an official road map, at least with estimated times or what not. this time it seems like the delay after the initial pass timer was only about a week! by the time the team confirms a later date, we could just be informed about it and the players would apreciate it a lot!

instead of covering info and letting the leaks guys tell us first, the team could just publish the news when they are NEW! including dates, game modes, new customizations, etc. at the moment they are doing quite a better job at helping us know what's going on with the game we love than the actual team

A release date announcement is a big marketing beat, so we have chosen to reveal it as part of our featuring in TheGameAwards. A huge number of people will see that and we're hoping it will bring in lots of new players to the game.

It might sound like it's better to just communicate all of that with you, all the time... but that's not a great strategy for marketing. You can give level reveals as exclusives to secure press coverage, for example. We'll talk about everything as soon as we're able to.

It's not a case of us 'doing a bad job' of letting you know what's going on - it's us holding things back to make big marketing beats. It's something every game does, it's not exclusively a weird Fall Guys decision.

Absolutely! (Also nbd but I am she/her haha)

> Why can't we just be informed about said date at the point where the devs confirm it?

Though the compounding issue of the timer teamed with this is frustrating, in almost all instances, we will be co-ordinating how and when we communicate season releases as part of a wider strategy. This is the case in most if not all large games for major releases and updates (seasons is a big example).

We can still improve how and when we communicate this as we do more and more seasons regardless- but yes, as /u/OliverAge24Artist says, there will almost always be a more co-ordinated plan that we must keep in mind.

> instead, we need to be searching for leaks pages all over because we don't get an official road map, at least with estimated times or what not.

I'll give a more vocal heads-up when we are able to mention something. In this case, I would like to travel back in time and let you all know in more detail what Oliver communicated via discord, and allow a more proactive discussion so that you aren't left discovering it via other channels or accidentally in-game. I think signalling earlier that the timer didn't mean what was insinuated would have helped a lot.

Okay, just to make it absolutely clear since you mention extending season 2, the battlepass page still says 1 day left.

What is the last day I can get battlepass progress? I looked on both the Mediatonic and the FallGuysGame twitter but didn't see anything there, is it Dec 10th or a later date? aka how long do I have left to try?

ps I love the game, very fun. Big Fans is very chaotic but I love making it across since it feels more like fighting my own impulses and timing than other beans.

We haven't yet announced the date that season 3 begins. Season 2 will now end on the same day. At the game awards, tomorrow, we'll announce the release date of Season 3 with a release date trailer. It won't be very long though.
