s welcome back to another Fallout 76
s developer deep dive I'm your host lady
s Devon and I'm joined by a few of our
s Fallout 76 developers here we've got
s senior Quest designer Ellis tan hello
s there and Lead Quest designer Josh
s moretto hey and returning to our Dev
s Dives is our lead monez designer James
s Phillips howy thank you for joining us
s we really appreciate you taking time out
s of your busy Dev schedules we know you
s have a lot going on in preparation for
s Atlantic City so since we have a lot of
s information to cover with this update
s we're just going to jump right into it
s um and in fact there's so much to cover
s on Atlantic City that we're going to
s break this into two different segments
s for you guys so this part one of our
s Atlantic Deep dive uh let's go right
s into it so first off off we are so
s excited to head to a brand new location
s out of all of the locations that we
s could have possibly chosen uh in the
s Fallout Universe what made Atlantic City
s stand out to you when we introduced
s expeditions to Fallout 76 we started
s with the pit which is a classic fan
s favorite location uh which we felt would
s feel very distinct from the woods and
s hills of Appalachia uh you know everyone
s wanted to revisit the pit um but when we
s look to our next location we want
s something feel as different from the pit
s as the pit did from Appalachia and as a
s native New jerseyan I'd been hoping for
s a long time that we'd get a chance to
s introduce my home state to Fallout for
s the first time and Atlantic City was the
s perfect opportunity for this quick segue
s since you just said that that's your
s home state Josh what does Atlantic City
s look like in game versus what you're
s used to in real
s life uh it's a lot more
s Rundown which which I think is
s understandable in the post-apocalypse uh
s it's been through a lot um The Glitz and
s glamour of America's playground is
s somewhat worse for wear let's say So
s speaking of like how rundown it is and
s everything what happened to Atlantic
s City during the Great War and how did
s that shape it into the location that
s we're about to explore uh well no no
s place was Untouched by the Great War but
s Atlantic City weathered better than most
s uh it was a destination it had no real
s military or strategic value so it wasn't
s a direct Target when the bombs fell and
s combined with some good disaster
s preparedness uh it helped keep things
s together in the aftermath uh By the time
s our players travel there uh Atlantic
s City has reached a tenuous stability
s with varying of its groups working
s together grudgingly to keep it as
s functional a place to live as they can
s um unlike a lot of settlements that
s we've seen in Fallout in 76 uh this is a
s place where people are living uh have
s entertainments uh functional Power Water
s uh which is not to say that they're
s without their
s struggles so Ellis tell us how does
s Atlantic city compare to Expeditions in
s the pit Atlantic City is coming in two
s content releases the first release
s includes two Expeditions very similar to
s the pit um and the second release
s includes one more Expedition as well as
s has a variety of quests that you can do
s in Atlantic City and you will be able to
s explore Atlantic City freely outside of
s uh Expedition like sort of the
s traditional Expedition content that we
s know of from the pit so can you tell us
s about the residents of Atlantic City are
s there any new characters or factions
s that we can expect to meet well Atlantic
s City is held together by three main
s factions uh we have the municipal
s government uh who are keeping the power
s and lights and food working in Atlantic
s City we have uh the organized crime
s rackets of the family uh are are sort of
s mobster organization and then we've got
s a very chaotic kind of crazy uh bunch of
s Guild of entertainers uh known as the
s showman uh each of them controls
s something vital to the continued
s functioning of Atlantic City and its uh
s tenuous stability the government as I
s said keeps the power and water flowing
s the family controls all of the vice the
s gambling the booze the chems that you
s know people in the post-apocalypse kind
s of need to get through the day and then
s the showman run all of the
s entertainments uh and those range from
s mundane you know stage performances
s music and singers and so forth all the
s way to deadly games of chance and and uh
s high-risk game shows that the desperate
s of Atlantic City can take part in uh in
s a chance to make a better life for
s themselves and experience a bit of the
s high life so on the topic of stories can
s you tell us a little bit about uh what
s is the story taking us to Atlantic City
s like what kind of stakes are at play
s what kind of choices are we going to be
s able to make there's a few different
s stories happening each of our three
s Expeditions uh invites you to work
s closely with one of the three factions
s and help them achieve their one of their
s primary goals so for example the family
s is all about keeping the money flowing
s they're not afraid to use these
s Cutthroat business tactics including
s cooking the books to avoid paying taxes
s and paychecks to the other factions so
s you have Angry showman and Municipal
s Auditors barging into the casino looking
s for their dues uh and then it's the
s players's problem to sort of fend them
s off um and in our story content our our
s Quest content we get to explore the
s deeper consequences of what these
s factions are doing and of the
s indulgences that people are taking in
s the city there is this highly exclusive
s designer drug known as devil's blood
s being traded in the upper
s echelons um so how does the devil's
s blood affect somebody who gets addicted
s to it what happens if you cross the
s family or the
s showman we have a main story which is a
s very personal story about a family who
s has come to Appalachia on the run from
s Atlantic City so the player will will
s help deal with some of the consequences
s they're facing and make choic is
s affecting the family members
s perspectives and where they end up at
s the end of the
s story uh in addition in contrast to the
s pit where it was sort of an allout War
s for survival between the Fanatics and
s the union with the sort of extra hurdle
s of the
s trogs in Atlantic City the threat to the
s city itself comes from outside Atlantic
s City is bordered uh on one side by the
s ocean and on the other side by the den
s forests of the New Jersey Pine Barons
s which in the aftermath of the Great War
s have uh retaken territory that used to
s be uh developed by people and have
s started to encroach on the city's
s borders so now we've heard about the
s factions the quests the Expeditions that
s we've got coming to Atlantic City some
s of our players noticed a unique
s character though in our season 13
s rewards uh we introduced a new camp Ally
s named Joey Bellow
s are can we expect to see any ties or
s references to him in there yeah Joey
s definitely brought a little bit of that
s Jersey boardwalk personality the
s Appalachia his unique brand of humor uh
s definitely gave something special to the
s player we might actually even see some
s signs of a past performance two from him
s but now you can only really see him to
s perform live in Appalachia speaking of
s performances we've heard him talk about
s his life in Atlantic City and he's told
s us there's a pretty Lively boardwalk in
s Casino so what kind of activities can we
s expect to take part in on the
s boardwalk well the boardwalk is the home
s to the showman and they run all of their
s games and entertainments uh from there
s so uh you'll actually get to participate
s in one of these in one of our first uh
s Expeditions when you will join as a
s competitor in one of their most
s dangerous of game shows for a chance at
s a great price
s in addition the players will be able to
s uh visit a casino run by the family
s there will be casino games which the
s player will be able to acquire and bring
s home from Atlantic City and uh build in
s their camps and bring some of that uh
s Casino flavor all the way back to
s Appalachia so I see we're we're taking
s notes from our nucle world on tour
s update where you could earn the games in
s N World on tour through tickets by
s playing the mini games is that kind of
s the same vein uh that will will see on
s the boardwalk and some of those casino
s games will be earnable just from playing
s the Expeditions but there will also be
s tons of other rewards that you can earn
s for That season which will be tied to to
s Atlantic City um and kind of a new story
s there so this next question is for all
s three of you uh do you have a favorite
s character or location that you are
s excited for players to experience uh
s Josh has briefly mentioned that the
s showman are inviting players to come
s star in their game show um it's actually
s called the most Sensational game which
s may sound a bit familiar to those who
s have read classic literature but this
s this game takes place in on the
s boardwalk in uh what is called Showman's
s pier and down to the depths of an
s underwater aquarium which is a really
s gorgeous uh location and it's unlike
s anywhere else in our game so I'm excited
s for players to experience that and to
s meet the members of the showman they're
s a cast of Ecentric and ambitious
s characters who will go to any lengths to
s achieve their unique Vision so that
s makes them quite unpredictable and and
s sometimes
s scary I'll jump in and say that there's
s there's a lot of fun characters in it
s from my perspective um you're going to
s meet a deeply in over his head uh
s accountant for the family who's going to
s need your help really badly and he's a
s lot of fun the thing that I really like
s from the Atlantic City update is
s particularly the boardwalk and the vibe
s of it like we've had so many kind of
s dark and Drey places like in the great
s Stories We Told with the pit but this is
s such a different take on what you can
s see in a Fallout world and it's really
s fun to see all that alive and both the
s characters the showmen and like in the
s spaces like the the boardwalk really
s does feel fun what was the most
s challenging aspect of development for
s Atlantic City do you have any fun
s stories to share with us
s uh so one of our challenges was
s listening to a lot of the feedback that
s we got from the pit Expeditions and
s looking at how players were engaging
s with it compared to our other daily
s content options and so going into
s Atlantic City as we developed it we
s realized we wanted to make some changes
s to the Expedition format to bring it
s more in line in terms of the player
s investment uh with other daily options
s such as events or uh The Daily Ops so
s you saw some of these changes already uh
s when we removed the ultr sight battery
s charge costs to launch Expeditions but
s we're going even further with this uh
s with this release we wanted this to be a
s piece of repeatable content that's
s approachable and fun to do over and over
s again so we wanted to make the action a
s bit snappier I'm enjoying the new
s Expedition experience and I hope players
s do as well uh if we did a good job then
s it should be pretty much seamless yeah
s and I wanted to add that we not only is
s the investment just in the players time
s but like we want to make sure that
s they're super rewarded for it that's
s probably something we'll get to talk
s about more in the second Dev dive
s absolutely we will go into all the
s different rewards that you can expect to
s uh that you can expect to earn in
s Atlantic City we'll also talk about a
s new crypted and the new encounter group
s before we get into that next Atlantic
s City Dev dive though it's time for us
s has to start wrapping things up but I do
s have one very important last question
s for you great debate amongst the Fallout
s 76 Community we need your help on
s this is cobbler a pie or not I will only
s accept it as a pie if it has a bottom
s crust because that's how I've always
s experienced
s pie so I'm I'm going to go with a very
s pedantic
s answer but by definition a a aop pie is
s either filling in a pastry Shell filling
s topped with pastry or both cobbler is
s filling topped with batter biscuits or
s dumplings all of which qualify as pastry
s therefore it is a pie oh James where do
s you sit on this I think that was a
s pretty authoritative answer um but I'm
s pretty sure I would say it's not a
s pie well thank you guys so much that's
s all time we have for this developer deep
s dive thank you again Ellis Josh uh James
s for joining us we'll let you get back
s into the cassino thank you so much to
s all of our players out in Appalachia we
s can't wait to share Atlantic City with
s you all on December 5th we will return
s next week with another developer Deep
s dive into Atlantic City where we'll get
s the scoop on a new encounter group
s crypted rewards and more we'll see you
s in
s Appalachia
