I saw a lot people telling the same arguments like

" current players will play even if there are no trailer, new players will come only with expansions "

" the trailer is only for current players so we don't need it "

" people will play nevertheless "

No, for mutliple reasons :

- there are not only new and current players, there are those who stopped more or less recently ( mainly the ones who stopped after they " finished " the most recent expansion ). They mainly comme back thanks to a reminder, marketing or hype .These kind of players are numerous )

- The hype generated with trailers is pretty huge, there are players who discuss between them about everything about it, they create theories and search on web for more informations. And that always work as hype generator, if you have no materials to talk about it doesn't work.

- Even if it is not the most important point, it is beneficial for streamers of the game, and it creates pretty strong community around them. ( not as much as twitch drops who creates a lot of absent viewers who don't listen )

- Just for this year : when you change something important, you do some marketing / give more detail about it before, otherwhise it can bring lack of confidence in the future for customers. And customers can think that the company doesn't have confidence in this product anymore. And lack of confidence in the future of a MMO is important

EDIT : I should have put it before post, marketing is not always expensive, a little can create big hype when it is well done. ( no, a line and a photo in a post which doesn't even talk about just the next episode is not marketing )

Over the years we've experimented with both: 1/ releasing campaign assets in advance (usually the Tuesday prior), and 2/ releasing campaign material the day of the update (trailer releases the same time that the update drops). There are pros and cons to each approach, but when looking at the data, they are highly comparable in terms of how they drive player reactivation (what this thread seems to be concerned with).

For this update, the trailer, key art, blog posts, and press coverage will drop on Tuesday, supported by Twitch Drops.
