Hi all,

Today we launched “Rising Flames”, the second episode of Living World season three. This release includes the new zone Ember Bay, the new PvP map Eternal Coliseum, the new legendary mace Eureka, updates for Fractals and WvW, and other fixes and improvements across the game.

As is our studio’s tradition on release days, we’re all playing the game with you on the Live servers today, except when we’re hot-fixing something. But now let’s take a timeout and chat about today’s release.

Here’s who’s joining us today.

On a personal note, I want to congratulate the team on today’s release. This is a large and detailed episode with a lot of handcrafted content. Even as recently as August there were a thousand polish items left to tackle, but the team stayed focused and knocked them out, and the release came together beautifully.

We were able to launch this episode just under two months after the previous one, but of course it won’t always be the case that everything that can go right will go right, so 2~3 months between episodes is the realistic estimate.

Question 2 pvp :
I am still very unhappy with the atate of PVP mostly because duels last too long (or indefinitely in some cases) due to a large amount of sustain that every single class currently has, this is aggregated by maps that take longer to traverse or have even more LOSing options as the latest 2 new maps. This concerns me greatly as fights last way too long thanks to lmited effectiveness of rotation on these maps.
Are you looking to release the same kinds of maps in future or reduce sustain(and boons) in future or is this the general trend for pvp where individual skill matters less than being the first to a cap and making it almost impossible to turn over a cap in a small skirmish?

Question 3: can we expect a good(new content) halloween next month?

The PvP teams goal is to make PvP players happy by creating content and adjusting content. We have already started doing specific skill splits for skills that we feel are having negative effects on gameplay in PvP and release our new maps as betas so we can make adjustments based on feedback from the community.

Have you considered adding options other than 3 points and some secondary objectives? Something like capture the flag, the payload thing from Overwatch etc. I believe it will add more flavour to the game and this is always a good thing.

I absolutely love the new Capricorn, I hope you won't make it another reskinned copy of Foefire like you did with Spirit Watch and Skyhammer. Have you considered updating old maps like you did with Capricorn? I've done a decent amount of rated PvP this year and I can tell you that Legacy of the Foefire is a super newbie trap.

Nothing is ever off the table. Foe fire is one of our highest played maps but if the community wants and overhaul like capricorn then we can start thinking about it.

To add to this, it's expected that Matrix prices spike immediately after a patch... the question is, how much and for how long? This is much harder to predict, so we tend to play it safe and high-ball our numbers. Over time we expect the price to drop and stabilize at a much lower value, which is what we base the vendor pricing around.

As such, it's unlikely that we will be adding more Matrix drops, but if the price that Matrices stabilizes at is an amount that is significantly higher than we expected, we can look into adjusting vendor prices to compensate.

While nothing is ever completely off the table, there isn't a current plan to retrofit older hearts.
Of course there's a much better chance of them showing up in future maps, depending on how they fit into the release at large.

Most of the game is written in C++. We use C# for most of our tools, and then there's quite a bit of Javascript and python scattered through the game. C++ is really solid to learn though. Make sure you understand concepts like caching and big O notation. Ugh, I could write on this for pages. There are also some great subreddits about game programming. On a more general perspective, it's always useful to see what other people are excited about/learning.

We chose those weapon skins to release around the GW2 anniversary as part of our celebrations. We selected ones with nostalgia or things that we thought would be fun to recreate in GW2. We already have added some popular other GW1 outfits and armor skins such as Chaos Gloves, Gwen's Attire, the White Mantle Outfit and things like Lyssa's Regalia. I'd say we'll continue to find inspiration in the Guild Wars franchise :)

Hey there, welcome back! I would suggest getting your masteries leveled up (at least gliding and updrafts), and no the maps weren't spawned like the jungle - while Ember Bay has danger at every turn, it's not always 20 pocket raptors to kill you:)

Welcome back!

There are a number of different rewards available to earn in Ember Bay, but I'll leave you to discover those.

There is a NPC in Bloodstone Fen (episode 1) that offers a cutscene which explains who the Mursaat are. I /think/ it's Bennet, down in the camp below the airship, or another NPC thereabout. It's way cooler than any explanation I could offer, so I'll let you go watch that.

You might have to get a little creative in dodging creatures in Ember Bay, but the map was designed to allow you to do that mostly. You should find it navigable.

PVP (achievement) question here (also concerns possible "bad blood" in Unranked):

I am currently VERY concerned about the ability to realistically get the meta achievement for the new coliseum map before the 3rd of October !

You need 50 wins and 25 "defensive kills" (those were the bottlenecks on Capricorn) on this map - and the map will be fighting for the same spot that Capricorn has in Unranked.

Already, A LOT of people get extremely angry if any map other than Capricorn pops in Unranked - and for pretty good reasons because there is a time limit on the achievements !

With the release of the Coliseum, this will get even WORSE !

You will have people fighting to finish their Capricorn achievs, others fighting to get their Coliseum achievs and some poor sods "sandwiched" in between who would like to play "oldschool" maps in Unranked.

My proposal is the following: Either INCREASE the time these maps (and the achievs) will be available - or DECREASE the amount of wins/defensive points etc. needed for the meta !

Hope a dev sees this, even if I get no answer - fingers crossed - I made a Reddit acount just to post this.

The Coliseum achievements will not be taken out till the end of season 5. We do understand that these achievements overlapping isn't ideal, but players will have around 3 months from today to complete Coliseum achievements.

I do know that at whatever point you became the Fractals team you inherited a unique challenge. I want to thank you for re-addressing the rewards and adding a use for what felt like an abandoned currency. I just spent the lions share of mine infusing and salvaging a stupid pile of rings for stat infusions and I'm not even mad. Ages ago I asked for Fractal rewards to be fixed and likened the even to a Christmas Miracle. I feel like it's finally happened and I want to specifically give you my thanks.

Here's my question: squeezing narrative into something as free-form as Fractals must be a unique challenge, are changes to existing fractals (ranging from a narrative/exposition style invasion from our new antagonist to even swapping enemy types out in a Fractal encounter - different skins but same skills or something similar) something that has been considered?

Thanks for all your work, all of you. I've been playing since Beta and this conversation is making me smile from ear-to-ear.

We don't have any current plans to tell a story in that way, but it's a cool idea.

Either way i have some points pointing against that.

  1. Achievement is granted without all checkpoints (switched midway to mesmer and used teleport to friend to get to my current position)

  2. if you fall to death without being in downstate you don't get revived at a checkpoint.

It was a bit hard, and we didn't want to player hate too badly:) The achievement issue is a bug, and will be fixed soon.

I'm not sure if I can touch him..I may be sucked into some demonic black hole where I would be stuck for eternity. That's what happened to the last designer who touched him at least.
