I always knew Support was able to make this change depending on the situation, but they were adamant on refusing such thing for me. There were so many exchanges and it got to a point where it looked like an agent I spent the last two years fighting Customer Support in regards to this so that I could find a way to fix a problem that I was also having in regards to my account as a result. But it was only after sending in eight tickets that they were they finally able to actually sort this out for me.

One of these issues was about the potential of changing my account's Display Name, seeing that the old name was something that not only made me highly uncomfortable due to what had happened, but because it was also tied to an online "entity" I no longer wanted to be affiliated with.

I always knew Support was able to make this change depending on the sityation, but they were adamant on refusing such thing for me. There were so many exchanges and it got to a point where it looked like an agent lied about their policies even though there was a whole official article about it. I only decided to contact them for the last time recently once I saw a Twitch streamer talking about how they were able to change theirs in order to accommodate their streaming schedules.

Don't get me wrong, a part of me is glad they finally helped me... but I've long lost my motivation to actually play the game, so I'd say it's a little too late for me now. But if Support is finally trying to help out players rather than drive them into corners like they used to (and create all sorts of controversies that this sub is well-aware of), then I hope they do change for the better.

They did not lie, they changed their policy on this during spring this year for you to be able to change your name without meeting the "only for an extremely good" reason. Altho this doesn't seem to have been changed in their support page about it...

This is correct!

Up until this year (a few months ago, really) we were not able to make changes to display names since the whole system (and the tools our team uses) were not built with changing the display name in mind.

While it was technically possible, it could permanently break an account in a way where it would end up unable to chat, add friends, interact with guilds, or the display name change simply wouldn't take. For this reason, we would only change the name if it contained a significant amount of personal information (such as first AND last name,) or if it was in violation of the Terms of Service.

Thankfully, we finally got our tools and the display name system updated, which is why we updated the policy this year! While we may come across a couple cases where we can't change the name, these should be few and far between, so this limitation is pretty much a thing of the past. :)

Thanks for the note about the FAQ page, by the way. I'll take a peak and see if we can get that updated.

EDIT: Grammar fail.

Does this mean I can put in a ticket to finally change my name?? Hell yes!

Edit: customer service got back to me and told me that I would lose chat interaction, guild listings, etc. if I chose to change my name. Looks like either the message hasn't been updated throughout their support network, or its not as robust a change as reported. Looks like I'm keeping my old name after all. :/

As long as you don't pick "Kirito" you should be golden!

True story - there's so many of those that even the randomly generated 4 digit number at the end may be running out, or the system just has issues finding an unclaimed number. ;D
