We will not be discussing or revealing future items that may be in development. And remember that not all of your fellow players may have been able to finish the episode in time for this AMA so please use spoiler tags appropriately.

For those of you that need more time to digest this release before asking questions, we will be hosting a Forum Chat next Thursday and Friday, March 15-16 on the Official Guild Wars 2 forums where a few devs from the episode team will be there to answer questions for you.

Season 4 of Living World is just getting started and the entire Guild Wars 2 team is excited that you are joining us this afternoon. So thank you for all of your continued support, for being here with us, and for continuing to make the Guild Wars 2 community the best it can be!

This is certainly something we want to do, but the task is pretty low priority when weighed against other things, so it won't be any time soon.

Did you get the Sandswept Isles portal scroll? The tome is used to combine all of the portal scrolls for the season, so you can have all of the different portal scrolls in one inventory spot. You can insert the scrolls in the tome, and then using the tome will let you portal to any of the season 4 maps that you've inserted scrolls for.

Are you aware that several Legendary weapons have been bugged since the release of PoF? Weapons that have on-skill-use effects do not play.

Some examples:

-Flameseeker Prophecies does not turn pages on skill use

-Rodgort's flame does not get bigger on skill use

-Predator does not breathe fire on skill use

-Quip does not spin around on skill use

The weapon assets themselves were never changed. Some deep level code change caused this to stop happening. We are investigating how to get it working again.

Just to clarify, you're getting the ruined logs in addition to the elder wood, correct? I've got a fix I'm working on for that, but they should currently be giving normal logging results, with a chance of getting extra ruined logs, unless there's another issue I'm not seeing.

While doing story breaking (and re-breaking) for the entire season, we changed the plot and framing of this episode a lot, but there were already map assets, gameplay, etc. designed, so we had to retrofit some stuff. :-)

We did a lot of things this episode that were a bit risky and pushed the capabilities of the engine. We have a bunch of moving platforms, story instances that transfer directly to other story instances, wind/magnet/gravity tech, and lots of player-specific open world stuff. QA had their work cut out for them and were total troopers.

Are these AMAs going to continue for future episodes independent of the forum AMAs?

Oh, also, I found myself in the new JP and, without spoiling anything, even when I go to the correct console and click on the password, the game thinks I haven't and doesn't give me the option to use it on the elevator :(

The reddit celebrations (like today's) and the forum chats (like next week's) are relatively independent of each other - which is to say that we're not going to cancel one in favor of the other.

API support was promised last AMA, 1 month later we got the dev promoted and API on hold again and so on as it happened many times before.

Will you ever acknowledge API is a very important thing for the community and actually, properly, meaningfully support it? Hiring a dedicated person, even as half-time job would be a great start.

API support is important to us because of the potential it has for community involvement. Just this morning the team met to triage a portion of the list of hot issues that have been plaguing the system recently. Mike Lewis and Ylan Salsbury have been monitoring the forums as well. If you have tickets in the github repository don't be surprised to see them come back with requests for more information to aid the devs in finding solutions.

love it that put in the extra mile to update the inquest as a whole!

Thanks! We really wanted the Inquest in this episode to feel a little more threatening and the environments a little creepier. Glad you enjoyed it!

Really well done, the most enjoyable living world episode yet, thank you for all your hard work.

Hey ANet, loved the new story and I can't wait to finish the new map events + achievements!

... which brings me to a question I've had for a long time.

Why are the point rewards for achievements so low these days? Does it have to do with post Pinnacle weapon and backpiece rewards not being done/envisioned yet? Thinking I'll have to wait literal years at this pace to wear the radiant backguard is really discouraging, and I'm in NA's top 10. Can anyone offer any insight on this at all?

With each episode or festival we offer a general allotment of points. The number of achievements and the difficulty of them vary from release to release.

Both LWS4 maps released so far however feature very restricted draw distance. Is there any particular reason for this?

Cameron gave a pretty good description of the trade-offs they had to make when making the map.

The Avocado Smoothie is currently a top level food (but shouldn't be), and has next to top level stats (level 75). The level will be updated in the near future. The goal for that food was to provide a much more accessible, but deliberately 'B' tier option for power builds. There weren't any other options in this regard, and we also didn't want to hurt the Butternut Squash Soup too much.

It's intended to be a lower version, as most of the other food options have other options that provide slightly lower stats than the top-tier food, but there was no similar option for Power/Ferocity. The intent wasn't to replace the Butternut Squash Soup, but to provide an option that can hopefully satisfy some of the demand, which will hopefully help bring the price down.

Hi, I've already told that to Matthew Medina on twitter, but I really want to thank you guys for being awesome and what you did with Guild Wars. You are open-minded, talkative on social media and I could tell a lot more about you, but I'll just sum up by saying you "change" my life more than you think, and gave me a purpose in my life : working with you guys :)

I am a french student in computer science, and I'm studying to become an engineer. But because computer science cover a lot of stuff, I wanted to know what should I focus on, in order to have a chance to work with you ? By that I'm asking for languages such as C++/C#... & database stuff, that's what I like :)

I've already checked some job offer to give me ideas of what the response should be like, but I think it's better to ask here, to maybe have more details :)

Again, thank you so much for everything... You are awesome :)

Here's some general tips I give a lot of people who are interested in the field:

  • Solid math skills.
  • Knowledge of C++ and/or proven ability to learn new languages/technologies quickly.
  • Solid understanding of data structures, particularly those used in games. e.g. intrusive lists, block lists, skip lists, component architecture, etc.
  • Having a broader knowledge of non-technical reference materials, such as History or other ancillary fields which may not be directly related to games or programming.
  • Passion for making games. Make your own games as personal projects.

*this is not specifically tips for getting hired at ArenaNet, or what we specifically look for, just my own personal "so you wanna be a game programmer" tips.

I think I fill most of those, so it's a relief :'). The only one I can be a bit behind is the math part where I'm like average/good, depending on the subject... Guess I'll try harder ! :)

The level you need to be competent at can depend greatly on the specific specialization you are angling for. For example, graphics programmers often need to have pretty solid linear algebra, while general gameplay might be able to get away with general algebra.

I highly recommend going as far as you can though. I may be biased though; I have an undergrad in Math. 😆

There will still be a region restriction. If you are in NA now you will remain with the NA players and if you are in EU you will remain with the EU players. Region transfers will still be a gem expense but I don't have any details on what the cost will be.

Thanks for linking the proposal, I should have done it to begin with. My confusion arose because - according to the Playing with Guild Mates paragraph - both a guild declaring itself as a WvW guild and a player picking their primary WvW guild play a role in the link placement. If I understand you correctly, only the players picking the same WvW guild are guaranteed to end up in the same link, but not necessarily everyone else in the guild, even if the guild has declared itself a WvW guild. Thank you for the clarification, it untangled the knots in my head :-)

P.S. I was trying to come up with some terminology to better distinguish the two cases, but I haven't found anything yet that fits. I know it's still quite a long time until the new linking can be released and that concepts are still changing, but perhaps you could find some simpler description along the way?

There is a two step process and I can see how it can be a little confusing/misleading.

First a guild needs to be registered as a WvW guild by a guild leader (or officer with correct permission levels). This allows the guild leadership to still control how the guild is used and also gives us a registration point for the guild getting into the new system.

Once the guild is a WvW guild in the system guild members will be allowed to more that guild as their wvw guild.

Both of those things need to be done before players from that guild are grouped with each other.

As a side note, may I ask what you guys look for in code samples? For example, should they be complete projects or snippets? I'm still trying to wrap my head around what is being asked for.

This is from an older job posting, but it generally still applies:

Here is what we are looking for in your code samples:

  • Your best work.
  • Demonstrated breadth of programming skills.
  • Ability to write readable, maintainable and efficient code.
  • Ability to design clear abstractions and clean interfaces.
  • Appropriate selection of data structures or algorithms.

What we are not looking for:

  • Code any of your previous employers have prevented you from sending us.
  • Solutions to simple problems (such as counting the number of zero bits in an integer).
  • Straightforward implementations of published algorithms (such as A*).
  • Wrapper classes for an existing library.
  • Math libraries such as matrix and vector implementations.
  • That code that you wrote years ago but which you could write better today; we want to see examples of your current skill.

This is your chance to impress our engineering department and show us why we should hire you. So, send us a sample of your very best work, something you're proud of. If you don't have anything on hand that meets the above criteria, write some code that does.
