s | Hello, everybody, and welcome |
---|---|
s | to the final Festival of Legends Hearthstone card-reveal stream, |
s | where we're going to be revealing a bunch of Hearthstone cards |
s | and we're going to be chatting with our special guest. |
s | I'm gonna let him introduce himself in just a second, but I need to go first. |
s | My name's Cora Georgiou. |
s | I am the Initial Design Lead on the Hearthstone team. |
s | I'm Leo Robles Gonzalez, |
s | one of the Designers on the Hearthstone team, |
s | and also the Set Lead for Festival of Legends. |
s | And today we are so excited |
s | because we are joined by Regis Killbin, |
s | content creator and community-member extraordinaire. |
s | I'm Regis. They just pulled me in off the street. |
s | But I'm excited to see some new cards. |
s | He was wandering around, like, in front of the gate, and we said... |
s | "Let me in!" |
s | ..."Do you want to look at some Hearthstone cards?" |
s | He said, "Yeah, absolutely, I do." |
s | We don't want to keep y'all waiting longer than we have to. |
s | We wanted to start with a bang here, Regis, |
s | so we are so excited to show you one of the exciting new Legendary Spells |
s | from the Festival of Legends Hearthstone expansion. |
s | This is Rhythm and Roots. |
s | Rhythm and Roots, |
s | our Druid Festival of Legends Legendary Song. |
s | This one is a lot of fun because it gets to harken back |
s | to that Secretly mechanic that we had on a card like Fatespinner. |
s | That was quite some time ago. |
s | What are your thoughts on this one, Regis? |
s | That was a long time ago, Fatespinner. |
s | I really like the idea of the Secretly mechanic, |
s | you know, really tossing to the opponent and saying, "Hey, what am I gonna do?" |
s | And in this case, |
s | both results are just summoning Giant dudes, |
s | and I love Giant minions, so I'm absolutely on board for this. |
s | But I have to say, I really, really like the animations |
s | and the music for the Legendary Spells. |
s | It's so cool to see actual music in Hearthstone for each individual card. |
s | I imagine that was a lot of work to set up. |
s | Yeah, I mean, the effects team, design, sound team, |
s | everyone worked together, like, |
s | really closely for all of the Legendary Cards - |
s | all the cards in general, but specifically the Legendary Spells - |
s | because they have sick VFX and really cool songs. |
s | In the past, whenever we've done Legendary Spells, |
s | they don't have music. |
s | They just have the effects and sound effects, and that's it. |
s | And they're awesome, but this time, you know, |
s | the whole theme of the expansion is music. |
s | The Legendary Spells are literally songs. |
s | It felt wrong not to have music in them. |
s | So I'm really excited |
s | for just being able to listen to music while playing these spells, |
s | and Rhythm and Roots is pretty groovy. |
s | Groovy. Yeah. |
s | So, as a card designer, |
s | are you helping guide some of that music-creation process? |
s | Are you in there like composers, or...? |
s | Myself, personally, not that much. |
s | I think, like, the... |
s | Any time any team got to get started on working on something, |
s | they would always have questions. |
s | "I just want to double-check, what genre is which class? |
s | Specifically in that genre, |
s | what are some, like, instruments |
s | and, I guess, like, tropes in that genre to pull from for this?" |
s | And for Rhythm and Roots, |
s | there was a lot of, you know, like, psych rock, |
s | very, like, laidback, you know, chill vibes. |
s | And you can see that also in the VFX, right, with the mandalas and just... |
s | I mean, the VFX on this are incredible. |
s | And fun fact: this is the first Choose One spell with effects, ever. |
s | Like, unique, on play, |
s | when you're making the choice, effects, ever. |
s | Yeah. |
s | -I didn't know that. -Yeah. |
s | -That's pretty cool. -Yeah. |
s | Yeah, the VFX and sound really popped off with this set. |
s | I like that you just sent a note that says, "Make it groovy." |
s | And they just solved the... |
s | Then they come back to us with an email like, "Is it groovy enough?" |
s | -Oh, yes. Yes. -Groovy. |
s | Check in on the grooviness level. |
s | I actually like, with Choose One spells like this, |
s | there is so much different art that you get to see for one card. |
s | Five distinct art pieces is really nice. |
s | And I noticed, in particular, the Giant has a saxophone. |
s | I feel like the saxophone has been iconic in Hearthstone's history |
s | for YouTubers galore. |
s | Yeah, yeah. I... |
s | I'm really happy with the art for every single piece of Rhythm and Roots. |
s | And that saxophone... |
s | Because, on the design team, we write the art descriptions |
s | and then send them to the art-outsourcing team, |
s | and, for this one, I don't think the saxophone was a part of it. |
s | It was just like, "Make a really, like, groovy-looking, |
s | big, giant, ancient guy." |
s | And then the art supervisor was like, "What if we added a saxophone?" |
s | -And it was like, "Yes. Please do." -The more saxophones, the better. |
s | Yeah, yeah. |
s | And in keeping with that theme of saxophones, you know, |
s | obviously, with Choose One spells, |
s | everything's got to work together as a team, |
s | but we have a wonderful selection of soloist cards in this set |
s | that really prefer to work alone, |
s | and one of them is rockin' with a saxophone. |
s | So let's go ahead and check out the Saxophone Soloist. |
s | And that is Saxophone Soloist. |
s | He does like to work alone, |
s | and he doesn't look thrilled to be doing it. |
s | But you know what? He's doing a great job, nonetheless. |
s | -Regis, your thoughts? -Well, I feel bad. |
s | I feel like Murlocs always want to be with other Murlocs. |
s | They get buffs from each other and, like, having other Murlocs on board, |
s | so that's probably why he looks so lonely and sad. |
s | But, you know, he's a soloist, so that's his calling. |
s | I do like the idea, though, from a play standpoint, |
s | where you get to start every turn, potentially, with a fresh Murloc. |
s | Like, the opponent wipes the board and I get to start over, |
s | and I always have that extra Murloc in hand to start building on, |
s | so maybe he'll find some friends along the way. |
s | Yeah, he's a lot of fun, oddly enough, |
s | even for decks that aren't all in on Murlocs, right? |
s | For decks that are running more spells or just a slower gameplan, |
s | having a 1-Mana minion just to play every turn, |
s | as long as you don't have other minions, is pretty sweet. |
s | Yeah, I think we saw Melomania teased in that video. |
s | I think we're gonna talk about it a little later, |
s | but that seems like a good match. |
s | -That is very true. -It's like we did it intentionally. |
s | Yeah, we'll talk about Melomania a little bit later on. |
s | We want to hook into some other soloists first. |
s | Yeah, the Saxophone Soloist, if you play it on turn one |
s | is a lot like a Fire Fly, a card from Journey to Un'Goro. |
s | I love Fire Fly. |
s | But then you could potentially be getting value from it |
s | if you keep playing it without any other minions on your board, |
s | so it's a little bit of a fun... |
s | a little fun Murloc right there. |
s | But that is not the only soloist that we are going to be showing you today. |
s | We've got one more coming right up now. |
s | I think everybody knows, |
s | if you go to a party when you're in college, |
s | that one guy sitting in the corner, playing guitar by himself. |
s | I've never been to a party. |
s | We'll take Regis to a party. |
s | I don't know that people party at our age, but it's okay. |
s | Just trust me, there was that guy. And this is the Guitar Soloist. |
s | Some pretty good value right there with the Guitar Soloist. |
s | You get to draw three cards if you have no other minions on the board. |
s | I feel like Demon Hunter's always been the king of card draw, |
s | and that is a lot of card draw attached to a minion as well, on board. |
s | And it's specific card draw, too, |
s | so you're tutoring specific cards. |
s | This is some awesome weapon I want to find. |
s | That looks really, really strong. |
s | Oh, yeah. |
s | We've seen stat lines like that - 5-Mana, Draw 3 - |
s | but this time, it's like you said, specific tutors, which is crazy. |
s | Yeah. |
s | It looks like we also have another soloist here, |
s | the Harmonica Soloist as well. |
s | That is an awesome Discover card. |
s | We've got these 3-Mana Discover cards that always pop up in Hearthstone, |
s | and it looks like this one gives you some tempo as well |
s | with an immediate Secret. |
s | That feels like Hunter doing awesome Hunter stuff. |
s | Yeah. |
s | The gameplay of Discovering a Secret I've always been partial to. |
s | It's so much fun, because you're given the choice |
s | of something that your opponent doesn't know, |
s | which, in a way, makes them able to, like, play around it more, |
s | knowing that you had a choice to make, right? |
s | -As opposed to drawing a random Secret. -Yeah. Who knows what that is? |
s | But you can also mind-games a little bit. |
s | And pick a random thing. |
s | -"They know that I know that they know." -Yeah. |
s | Some real trickery there. |
s | So, in regard to soloists, |
s | this is a little package of minions we've gotten throughout the set. |
s | Can you describe how you came up with the idea of soloists, |
s | and why you wanted to create those? |
s | Yeah. |
s | So, that starts with the fantasy of performing a solo |
s | when you're at a musical performance or something. |
s | It's a very dreamy thing that I think a lot of us kind of want to do. |
s | You know, spotlight's on you. You know, go play your... |
s | -Yes, you do. Yes, you do. -Nah. |
s | But we wanted to translate that into what it means as a Hearthstone minion. |
s | And when trying to just think of how do we convey that through mechanics, |
s | there was an old card from, I think, Kobolds & Catacombs, |
s | called Lone Champion. |
s | I love Lone Champion. |
s | Everyone loves Lone Champion just as much as they love playing solos. |
s | So that gameplay was really cool, |
s | and that card's pretty well-loved among the community. |
s | And the design space there is incredible. |
s | It's a very simple input for whatever you want as the output. |
s | Right, Leo. That was a great card from Kobolds & Catacombs. |
s | Catacombs? Cata...? |
s | ...great cycle of cards. |
s | Yeah, because we can just kind of mold their output to whatever we want, |
s | so whatever deck we want it to be in. |
s | So you're telling me Lone Champion was playing guitar secretly this whole time? |
s | He was playing an instrument you've never even heard about, alright? |
s | -Some magical Warcraft instrument. -Lone Champion's special. |
s | Yeah. |
s | -Absolutely. -That's awesome. |
s | -Soloists are gonna be fun to play with. -Yeah. |
s | And, you know, a soloist wouldn't be anything |
s | if they didn't have an instrument. |
s | Let's go ahead and check out the Kodohide Drumkit, |
s | one of the new instruments from the set. |
s | So, Warriors like to gain Armor |
s | and they like to deal damage to all the minions on the board, |
s | and we thought we should probably just put those two things together, |
s | and then we got the Kodohide Drumkit. |
s | Yeah, I love any excuse to play Armor cards. |
s | My fantasy in Hearthstone is just gaining as much Armor as possible, |
s | so I think I'm gonna be playing a lot of this. |
s | I have a question about how this works. |
s | It says, "Gain Armor while equipped to improve." |
s | But there's the new card Razorfin Rockstar. |
s | You gain Armor, and then that gains you an extra tick of Armor. |
s | -Yep. -Are both of those gonna... |
s | to proc the Kodohide Drumkit upgrade, or...? |
s | Yes. So, it's every instance of gaining Armor will take this up by one. |
s | So if you have, you know, Razorfin Rockstar and your Hero Power, |
s | your Hero Power gives you 2 Armor - that's one tick. |
s | Rockstar gives you 2 Armor - that's another tick. Boom. |
s | There's also synergies with stuff like... |
s | -Oh, my God. Armorsmith? -Yep. |
s | Armorsmith. Yeah, Armorsmith. |
s | Sorry. She... |
s | Every single time somebody takes damage, she gives you 1 Armor. |
s | Each one of those is a separate tick of Armor, |
s | which kind of makes your drumkit huge. |
s | Ah. I like that a lot. |
s | Yeah, get a full board of minions and start Whirlwinding away. |
s | Yeah, that's gonna make an awesome AoE. |
s | I also just love the idea of Garrosh picking up a drumkit |
s | and just slamming people over the head with it. |
s | That's very Warrior. That's very rock, to be able to do that. |
s | And I think it works really well with the Warrior kit for this set. |
s | Nice. |
s | But, of course, you know, |
s | every class has to have their instrument |
s | that works with their song and their Legendary Artist. |
s | So let's go ahead and jump now over to the kings of disco, Paladin, |
s | with the Disco Maul. |
s | Paladin, the obvious choice for disco. |
s | -Let me just say that right off the bat. -True. |
s | If you play a lot of minions, you get a lot of buffs. |
s | Yeah. So, number one, Paladin and disco is an interesting combination. |
s | -Correct combination. Oh, yeah. -Correct combination. |
s | But, number two, it's called Disco Maul, |
s | which rhymes with disco ball. |
s | -Yes. -That can't have been an accident. |
s | That was 100% the joke. |
s | That is why it's named that. |
s | Sometimes we do things accidentally, but this one was intentional. |
s | Okay, okay. |
s | And I liked in that clip, too, |
s | they got really lucky with their minion buff. |
s | But kind of part of the intrigue of the card is |
s | you want to play minions to get extra stats on the weapon, |
s | but you've also got this risk of extra minions being on board |
s | and maybe hitting the wrong target. |
s | But I have a plan. I'm scheming already. |
s | I want to play a really... |
s | I want to play 20 minions throughout the course of the game, |
s | 30 minions, just keep dumping it up, and then wait till the end of the game |
s | and play one Charge minion, maybe a Freebird. |
s | -We saw Freebird right there. -Yeah. |
s | It would make the most epic Freebird with one giant buff. |
s | -That's gonna be my day-one deck, I think. -By all means. |
s | The thing with a lot of Deathrattle instruments |
s | is you can kind of play really greedy, |
s | you can try to get those numbers really big, |
s | but if your opponent has weapon removal you can get punished for it, |
s | so you've got to have the right timing. |
s | But there are instruments belonging to three classes in this set |
s | that don't have to worry about those Deathrattles |
s | being proc'd at the wrong time, like Mage's Cosmic Keyboard. |
s | "After you cast a spell, summon an Elemental with stats equal to its Cost." |
s | So, big Elementals. |
s | And, by the way, that Elemental looks sick. |
s | That is some awesome art. |
s | I love anytime Hearthstone trends cosmic, and that dude is awesome. |
s | But it looks like we're getting some more big-spell Mage support here. |
s | Yeah. I mean, you play this with anything 5 and above... |
s | For 2 Mana, you get to do that three times? That's crazy. |
s | Even still, like, if you just play this on two, |
s | turn three you play a 3-Cost spell, that's not bad either. |
s | And then, you know, do as you please next turn, next turn. |
s | Right. Save the durability for later, for bigger ones, too. That's awesome. |
s | So, when it comes to instruments, |
s | how did you guys pick which instruments go with which class? |
s | Minus, you know, nice rhymes like Disco Maul. |
s | I can imagine googling things with weapons. |
s | "What rhymes with ball?" |
s | We definitely went to Wikipedia and searched "instruments." |
s | Yeah. |
s | I mean, a lot of it is almost kind of trying to, like, |
s | make a puzzle out of it |
s | and putting the right pieces where they need to go. |
s | We didn't want half of the classes to have guitars, right? |
s | Because then it's just redundant and a lot of the same. |
s | So we wanted to focus in |
s | on what makes those genres for the classes really special |
s | and find the instruments involved with that |
s | that make it feel super unique, right? |
s | For, like, disco music and, you know, retro music in that vein, |
s | you hear the slap bass, right? |
s | Bass guitar is huge. So Disco Maul is a bass. Boom. |
s | For rock 'n' roll we got a drumkit |
s | because drums are core to, you know, that driving rhythm of rock music. |
s | I think every single genre has an instrument that feels really unique |
s | and, you know, compelling on its own. |
s | That's just on the theme. |
s | On the designs, I think they all feel super unique as well. |
s | They each have their own, |
s | like, improve condition for the Disco Maul, |
s | playing minions for the Drumkit, gaining Armor, right? |
s | Totally different hooks for how to, you know, juice them up. |
s | Did you play any instruments personally? |
s | Like, are you a musician? |
s | So, yes, but I don't play instruments. |
s | I used to make music, like, in software on my laptop, right? |
s | Like making sick beats and stuff in high school. |
s | Cora, you used to sing, or do sing. |
s | I... am washed up, but, yes, I did sing for a long time. |
s | I was never much of an instrumentalist, unfortunately. |
s | I am the worst musical person, though. You guys picked the worst... |
s | We did just grab you off the street, right? |
s | True. I am so not musically inclined at all. |
s | -I'm learning a lot from you two. -We'll have to go to karaoke sometime. |
s | -Oh. You'll regret that. -It would be a good time. |
s | We could kick some songs off right now, I guess. |
s | Not without getting copyrighted. Maybe we'll save that for another stream. |
s | Okay. Smart. |
s | Alright. Well, I don't want you to get alarmed. |
s | The next thing we're gonna talk about is the keyword for the expansion, Finale. |
s | But it's not the last section we have to discuss. |
s | -More cards. -We have some stuff coming up after. |
s | So we won't get our bonus right now, |
s | because it is not the last thing we're gonna do, |
s | but let's go ahead and check out some Finale cards, |
s | and you can think about how you would want to use them in the game. |
s | It was important to us that, for all of the classes, |
s | the vibes be good, |
s | and for Shaman, they are particularly chill. |
s | Yeah, this card looks really efficient. |
s | Like, we used to have to pay 3 Mana for 8 Healing straight up, |
s | and now you get a bonus 3/3 as well, |
s | so you're not really sacrificing all that tempo to take your healing. |
s | This is exactly the sort of card I think I always like to play. |
s | Just stay alive, be defensive. That's my favorite kind of Hearthstone. |
s | This card, it feels really good to play. |
s | It's honestly one of my favorite Finale cards that we have. |
s | But like you were saying, |
s | you know, in the past we've had just 3 Mana, restore 8 Health, |
s | and, admittedly, that was not the best card. |
s | So, now, getting the 3/3 on top of it, |
s | if you're on turn three, |
s | you've probably not taken 8 damage at that point. |
s | You might have taken, like, I don't know, 5 or less or something. |
s | So you're missing out on some healing, |
s | maybe even you're missing out on most of it, |
s | but you still get a 3/3, which is kind of sick. |
s | That's kind of... chill. |
s | So it's fine to play early, |
s | but late, it feels really good with the healing as well. |
s | When cards kind of always feel good to play, |
s | there's a moment where it's wrong to play it, that's nice. |
s | Yeah, and actually, Finale was a keyword |
s | that came about a little bit later in the process. |
s | -Yes. -I know we tried... |
s | There's just so many, like, incredible words |
s | associated with music in general, and with the genre that... |
s | We tried so many of them before we hooked into Finale. |
s | Yeah, I think, with every expansion, |
s | there's a lot of stuff we work on that people just don't get to see. |
s | We experiment with a lot of different keywords, |
s | a lot of different themes and fantasies and stuff like that, |
s | and for the music expansion, like Cora was saying, |
s | there's just a lot of words that are really evocative of just really cool stuff |
s | that you haven't seen in Hearthstone before. |
s | And we tried to kind of contextualize |
s | the abstract concept of music into mechanics in Hearthstone, |
s | which is not easy. |
s | And a lot of the mechanics we tried were like... |
s | And then Finale, like Cora said, |
s | came out pretty late in the process, which is fitting for Finale. |
s | -Sure. -But it just felt awesome. |
s | It's just, you're doing what Hearthstone's already asking you to do, |
s | which is spend your Mana, and then you get a reward. |
s | Every keyword that we try is great. They're all great. |
s | -But some of them are just better. -We've never done bad keywords, ever. |
s | How tempting was it to use the word tempo? |
s | That's something we talk about in Hearthstone all the time, tempo. |
s | I think we tried Tempo. |
s | Well, there was a spell - I don't remember which one specifically - |
s | but there was a spell that was called Tempo for a long time, |
s | and then people were like, "That's weird," and I'm like, "Fine. Fine. Fine." |
s | Weird sounds right up your alley for cards, though. I like that. |
s | Alright. So, we've just seen a pretty chill card. |
s | Let's shift gears to a pretty cool card. |
s | This is a Frost Death Knight minion, Hardcore Cultist. |
s | So, Frost Death Knight loves to deal damage. |
s | Hardcore Cultist is already pretty hardcore, |
s | but then you trigger that Finale effect and you can deal damage to all enemies. |
s | This card looks like it's packing quite a punch for 3 Mana. |
s | Like, a board clear and some extra chip, face damage as well. |
s | And I also like that it's a single rune for Frost, |
s | because that means we can put it in a Climactic Necrotic Explosion deck, |
s | which I'm super excited to play. |
s | I think that's still the card I'm most excited about. |
s | Yeah, the Death Knight stuff in this set I'm super happy with. |
s | Like, the Rainbow Death Knight is super fun, |
s | but even just the way we've spread out, like, the different runes for stuff. |
s | Hardcore Cultist is, I think, the only, like, full-on Frost card - |
s | only Frost card, I should say - |
s | but the fact that you can mix runes, right, |
s | especially with the addition of the Climactic Necrotic Explosion, |
s | means that, you know, single-rune and double-rune cards |
s | are just a lot more appealing to build decks with. |
s | Right. When you guys are designing rune cards, |
s | is it starting from, like, "We need to solve this problem for Frost", |
s | or is it starting more from a thematic standpoint? |
s | I think - for this, at least - we just wanted to... |
s | Whoever was working on Death Knight was like, |
s | "I want to make the Blood Health Manipulation deck," |
s | and then we built up the cards for that. |
s | And then, with the remaining cards, |
s | it's just a matter of looking at, "Okay, what other runes, |
s | what other things can we give love to, can we build up a little bit more?" |
s | You'll see some, like, Deathrattle-y themes for Unholy, |
s | you'll see Hardcore Cultist for Frost, so... |
s | -Damage for Frost, yeah. -Yeah, yeah, yeah. |
s | Yeah, I think every designer sort of approaches |
s | archetypes from a different lens. |
s | And we can take a look at a couple of different cards |
s | that go into different archetypes across different classes, |
s | just a whole bundle of Finale stuff. |
s | We can start top-left with Boogie Down. |
s | "Summon two 1-Cost minions from your deck. Finale: Give them Taunt." |
s | Oh, yeah. |
s | This is giving me kind of old Call to Arms vibes, |
s | Summoning minions from your deck. |
s | That was a pretty strong card, so I'm intrigued about this one. |
s | But I have to say, I like this Finale. |
s | This feels almost like an option as opposed to a bonus. |
s | It can be a bonus, but there might be instances |
s | where you don't want your small stuff to have Taunt. |
s | Like, maybe you want to hide it behind a big minion. |
s | It's neat how some Finale cards feel like you kind of always want the Finale, |
s | but other ones, there's a decision to be made. |
s | Can you talk about the thought process behind that? |
s | Yeah, so, designing Finale, |
s | you're being rewarded just for spending the Mana. |
s | There's no actual, like, extra investment |
s | outside of, I guess, ordering your turn correctly |
s | and being limited to one per turn most of the time. |
s | So the effects like Boogie Down |
s | that are kind of, like, options, |
s | the flipside works super well |
s | because, like you said, sometimes you just don't want to. |
s | I think, you know, we do want the keywords to feel awesome |
s | and feel really cool to play with, so cards like, you know, |
s | Chill Vibes or Hardcore Cultist, that just give you upside if you do them, |
s | those are super fun, too. |
s | I think, even still with Boogie Down, |
s | Taunt, I think in most cases, is probably gonna be pretty good. |
s | The cases where it isn't I think is where a lot of skill expression |
s | and more invested players can really show off, like, "Oh, I'm smart. |
s | I didn't get the Taunt on this card, even though the game wants me to." |
s | Yeah. I can't show off being smart, unfortunately. |
s | -I'll save that for other people. -Oh, shh. No. |
s | You're sounding smart right now. |
s | Here, I'll give you an opportunity. Taste of Chaos. Sound smart. |
s | Yeah. So, we've got a little bit of a way to wipe a minion here. |
s | And then, also, "Discover a Fel spell." |
s | Any card that's generating extra stuff, generating value, |
s | giving me decision points, I like that. |
s | That's a nice little bonus. |
s | And Taste of Chaos itself is a Fel spell. |
s | -Ah. -Yeah. |
s | Oh, also, that guy's hair, I think I'm gonna take up that hairstyle. |
s | Do it. You should pose in that exact way, right? |
s | -I think Emo Regis is my next... -The counter for you is at two. |
s | -This? I've done that four times. -That's three. |
s | -Now five. -That's five. |
s | Your numbers are off the charts, and counting is not our specialty. |
s | You guys are gonna see Emo Regis on stream when I get home. |
s | -Oh, yes, please. -Today, in your direction. |
s | Oh, my God. |
s | Yeah, so, Taste of Chaos, pretty much straight-up upside. |
s | Maybe hard to play it on turn one, unless your opponent goes first |
s | and plays maybe a Saxophone Soloist if they're a Jazz Shaman. |
s | Then you get that bonus, which is nice. It can Discover itself, which is neat. |
s | -It cannot. -It cannot Discover itself. |
s | Oh, right, because Discover cards can't Discover themselves. |
s | Okay, who's not looking smart now? It's me. |
s | And I am the one who makes the rules. Ain't that great? |
s | You took one for me. Yeah, thank you. |
s | Alright. Demonic Dynamics. |
s | Another Fel spell, but this time for Warlock. |
s | Yeah, and this is just a lot of value again. |
s | You give me a value card, I'm going to enjoy it. |
s | I want slow, grindy games, |
s | I want to find a lot of cards to play, so this looks perfect. |
s | And some bonus stats along the way, too, is nice. |
s | Yeah, and with this card specifically, |
s | or with any Finale card that is a Discover effect, |
s | the super interesting part to me is, usually, you know, |
s | research generation is something you want to do early in a turn |
s | so you can get your stuff and then evaluate, "What do I do now?" |
s | This is asking you to do it last, right? |
s | So this is one of those designs |
s | where there is a clear upside to playing it first, |
s | and then a clear upside to playing it last, |
s | and figuring out when to do the Finale versus when not to is a lot of fun. |
s | "Am I trying to find a card to play now, |
s | or am I trying to find better cards to play next turn?" |
s | is a real interesting decision point, yeah. That's cool. |
s | I see the Thornmantle Musician here as well, |
s | and I have to say, that is the cutest... |
s | the cutest card art I have ever seen. |
s | -Is that a little teddy bear on there? -It's a little hyena. |
s | -It's a hyena? -A little hyena cub. |
s | -Oh, man. -He loves the music. He's just chilling. |
s | I can't wait to zoom in on that. |
s | Have you guys seen those videos where they play music in a field with all the cows? |
s | Oh, I've seen a video where someone's playing a flute |
s | and then a bunch of raccoons just swarm out, listening to the music. |
s | -I love that video. -Yeah, that actually-- |
s | -You have to send me that. -I will send it. |
s | I have seen some sleepy-cow videos where they're just like... |
s | Yeah, it's great. |
s | That is the cutest art I've ever seen. |
s | Also, Quilboar is showing up a fair bit in this set as well. |
s | It's nice to see Quilboar actually getting some focus, |
s | particularly with menagerie decks being a thing. |
s | Yeah, so, Quilboar, like you said, just with menagerie decks, |
s | it's just another way to add an extra bonus effect, |
s | get more buffs from your Party Animal, what have you. |
s | But we actually, early on in the set, |
s | tried to do, like, |
s | the Battlegrounds/Blood Gem-inspired Quilboar decks in Standard. |
s | We thought that gameplay was super fun. |
s | And in Thousand Needles, where the Festival of Legends takes place, |
s | It's right next to Razorfen Downs, where a bunch of Quilboar are, |
s | so it made sense to kind of have them show up at the festival |
s | if it's a local music scene, right? |
s | Sure. |
s | But we tried kind of figuring out what a Quilboar deck could look like |
s | and ended up not finding anything that we thought was really compelling |
s | for the, like, Standard gameplay. |
s | But that doesn't mean we just shouldn't do Quilboar. |
s | There's implications, like you said, with menagerie. |
s | It's also just cool to see them come back, right? |
s | Save that deck for later. I'm excited. Maybe a few years down the road. |
s | Yeah, we're super open to it. |
s | It's gameplay that we really like in Battlegrounds, |
s | and I think, you know, we ended up with the right cards for this set, |
s | but definitely something that we would look into potentially doing in the future. |
s | I like teasers. Thank you. |
s | I mean, okay, there's teasers, |
s | which, like, to be fair, we do tease things from time to time, |
s | and people either notice them or they don't - that's okay. |
s | I don't know that this one's a teaser. |
s | It's more just us saying, "We like Quilboar, |
s | we think they're cool, and maybe we'll do them someday." |
s | Alright. But, like I said, that was the Finale section, but we're not done. |
s | In fact, we have another cycle of cards to go to, |
s | and let's check out the Harmonic and Dissonant spells in this set. |
s | Ah, yeah. |
s | Harmonic Mood. More Attack support for Druid. |
s | So, we had seen the sort of Hero Power-enabling cards |
s | and Hero Power-buffing cards, which seemed like a good start |
s | for Zok Fogsnout. |
s | Yeah. |
s | I think I said that right. I hope so. |
s | But now we've got, like, a way to juice it up directly |
s | with the Harmonic and Dissonant Mood. |
s | I like that Armor gain, in particular, |
s | because that's really nice. |
s | Yeah, what I love about the Harmonic and Dissonant spells |
s | is that on each turn your kind of getting the same value, right? |
s | It's just numbers swapping. |
s | But the way that they swap just changes what the card does. |
s | Literally, obviously, that's the whole mechanic, |
s | but, like, sometimes you don't need 4 Attack for this card. |
s | Sometimes they're just gonna have a 2/2, and you're like, "I need that Armor." |
s | But you're in the Harmonic mode - sorry, you're in the Dissonant mode, right? |
s | And you're like, "Okay, do I wait and kill this next turn, |
s | or do I just do it now?" |
s | And those decision points, I think, add a lot. |
s | And I love how the art pieces change |
s | between the Harmonic and the Dissonant modes. |
s | Obviously, with the Druid one, you get daytime versus night-time. |
s | And with that Moonkin, it's just really cool. |
s | It's another little piece of storytelling that we were excited to add in. |
s | That actually looks really nice. |
s | -It's really beautiful. -It's so rad. |
s | It's a so cool. The glows are awesome. |
s | So, we've also got Harmonic Pop here for Priest. |
s | And this looks like a really nice potential board-clear and a giant body. |
s | And, I guess, with the Priest Legendary Spell, |
s | you could even, I guess, play this on turn four, too, |
s | which feels like you're really swinging. |
s | -Yeah. -Yeah, that looks strong. |
s | Yeah. |
s | This one's a lot of fun, because I think the, like... |
s | stats of a minion, like 1/1 versus doing 1 Damage to all minions, |
s | I don't think those are necessarily equivalent in power. |
s | But situationally, right, each one has the perfect use case versus the other. |
s | So, like, they have just a bunch of 3/3s. |
s | You obviously want the 6/6 versus... |
s | You just need to kill everything. I'll take the 3/3 minion, right? |
s | It's just a little bit of bonus. |
s | 6-Mana for 6-Damage to all is just enough in a lot of situations, |
s | and then we tack on that little bit of a body on the backside |
s | that just makes it a bit sweeter. |
s | Yeah. |
s | And, like, too, if you have a big minion on board, |
s | you might actually want the smaller AoE to not damage your own stuff as much, |
s | while still sweeping up the opponent's smaller minions. |
s | -And you get a 6/6. -Yeah, right. The bonus 6/6. |
s | I also like how the artwork's dramatically different. |
s | From three characters to one, |
s | usually the art is just a slight change-up, |
s | but that one feels really different. |
s | Yeah. |
s | The lone pop artist there. |
s | Yeah, so, Harmonic Disco as well for Paladin. |
s | This one's a pretty dramatic difference, Summoning a 5-Cost or a 1-Cost, |
s | but that means, like... |
s | I want a Zilliax. |
s | -Yeah. And you can get one. -And you can have one. |
s | Yeah, this is, personally, I think, |
s | one of my favorites in terms of the gameplay, |
s | because the difference between a random 1-Cost and a random 5-Cost, |
s | for a 1-Cost, there's a pretty good amount of, like, 1-Attack, 3-Health minions. |
s | So if you just want big, dumb stats on board, you can go for... |
s | What would that be? |
s | 6... 6/8 stats, right? |
s | -We're good at math, yeah. -I think I did that right. |
s | That's it, yeah. |
s | But 5-Cost minions, that's like... |
s | A Mana threshold, I guess, is the wrong word. |
s | A Mana point |
s | where the random pool of minions have such varied effects, right? |
s | The average thing you're gonna get is just a lot more interesting. |
s | There's a lot more, like, texture to that pool of cards, right? |
s | So the difference between the two Harmonic and Dissonant forms on the Disco |
s | are actually a lot more different than it looks like at first, |
s | which I think is awesome. |
s | Yeah, I think that the variance |
s | among just the different Mana costs for these spells is really interesting. |
s | Like, Harmonic Mood and Dissonant Mood |
s | aren't necessarily the biggest difference between the two, |
s | but then you look at Harmonic Pop and Dissonant Pop, |
s | and Harmonic Disco and Dissonant Disco, |
s | and suddenly, they can be quite dramatically different on both sides. |
s | So there was some fun design space there. |
s | Like, 3/3s that are 5-drops with Battlecries |
s | are something that don't get you great effects, |
s | there are also a lot of strong Deathrattles and powerful effects |
s | in the 5-Mana slot as well. |
s | The fact that you get to Discover, you don't even have to pick the 3/3, |
s | unless you're the unluckiest person in the world |
s | and you're given the three worst options. |
s | Trust me, the first time on stream, |
s | I'm gonna get the three worst possible minions. |
s | I don't even account for that. I know that's gonna happen. |
s | -It's always Zilliax. Always Zilliax. -Oh, dude, please, yes. |
s | I love Zilliax. I'm so happy. |
s | Alright. And that is sort of the end of the different segments we had going on. |
s | But, of course, much like, you know, music artists and genres, |
s | not everybody can be fit into a specific label. |
s | You know, there are some people and some cards |
s | that just are a bit outside of the box, |
s | and so we've got a couple of miscellaneous hits for you here. |
s | This isn't real metal! |
s | Alright. So, that's Death Metal Knight. |
s | -This is a 2 Blood-rune Death Knight card. -Yes. |
s | Yeah, I love that I get to play stuff |
s | when I'm spending all my time healing myself. |
s | Like, I just constantly want to heal up and stay alive, |
s | but sometimes you sacrifice so much tempo when you're doing that. |
s | Death Metal Knight's like, "No, hey, you still get to play |
s | an awesome little top minion and slow down the opponent." |
s | This is a dream for me. |
s | But, like, when you're picking out what, to me, |
s | looks like a seemingly random character here - |
s | he's cool and Death Metal-y - |
s | but is there any inspiration that drives these cards and these character choices? |
s | Yeah, so, with Death Knight specifically, |
s | it was a really cool opportunity to visit another band from Warcraft |
s | that, up until now - up until Festival of Legends, I should say - |
s | we've really only seen, like, E.T.C. as, like, the music guy. |
s | There's a whole other band in WoW, which is Blight Boar. |
s | And in WoW, you can go see them perform, |
s | and they do this performance where, as they're on stage, |
s | you're actually fighting the Death Metal Knight. |
s | They've got some beef with each other, Blight Boar and the Death Metal Knight. |
s | They're sworn enemies. |
s | You even see in his art, he's thumbs-down'ing, |
s | and his VO is kind of making fun of Blight Boar. |
s | Really cool that we managed to get this character in the set. Yeah. |
s | That's awesome, hearing all the background for this stuff. |
s | Sometimes we don't see the details. |
s | I feel like I know a little bit of Warcraft lore, but you're a master. |
s | I would not say I'm a master. |
s | I, you know... I do my research, right? But... |
s | We have a really wonderful lore team that helps us out, |
s | and there are some designers on the team that are very big World of Warcraft buffs. |
s | Yeah. |
s | I feel like Celestalon knows Warcraft very well. |
s | Any time I have a question of any specific thing, |
s | I just bug him on Slack. |
s | -"Hey!" -Resident expert. |
s | -He knows things. -Yeah. That's awesome. |
s | So, we have another card here. Holotechnician, I see. |
s | And this guy looks familiar, too, speaking of characters. |
s | I feel like this is maybe a stretch, but this looks a bit like... |
s | I think it was Holomancer from Boomsday Project, really. |
s | And this effect, too, seems really specific. |
s | "Any minion takes exactly 1 damage." |
s | Which, considering some of the spells Mage got this set, |
s | that doesn't feel like an accident, necessarily. |
s | We'll have 2 damage. |
s | So, Mage has their Hero Power, right? Which is 1. |
s | And with this card on the board, |
s | that's just destroying a minion, which is incredible. |
s | This is an effect that... |
s | I don't even know where it specifically started. |
s | If I have, like, a guess, |
s | we had the card Bubbler. |
s | That was the Elemental that, when it takes 1 damage, it dies. |
s | -Oh, yeah. -That effect is super fun. |
s | Admittedly, a little bit sad for Bubbler. |
s | But we thought... |
s | I guess we thought, like, "Hey, let's just get that gameplay |
s | and put it on all minions and see what happens." |
s | Holotechnician, low-key, one of my favorite Mage cards in the set. |
s | -Really? -I love that card. |
s | It's like Spectral Trainee, right, I think from the main set. |
s | It's dealing 1 to all minions, so it could be a nice little board-clear. |
s | Oh, yeah. |
s | I love the opportunity for a good call back, |
s | even when it's a character that's a little bit obscure, |
s | players might not remember it too well. |
s | But in my experience, everybody loves some Hearthstone card, |
s | even if it might not be one that you are super attached to. |
s | Maybe there is a Holomancer fan out there |
s | who's really excited to see Holotechnician. |
s | -Tag me on Twitter. -I think it's cool. |
s | If you're the Holomancer fan, we want to hear about it. |
s | I'm curious, |
s | because that's one of the most obscure Hearthstone cards, I feel like. |
s | You're doubting the Holomancer fan? |
s | I think one thing about this set that I had a lot of fun with, |
s | on the design side of it, |
s | is just revisiting characters from Hearthstone's past |
s | and figuring out, "What are they doing at a music festival? |
s | Are they performing? Are they listening?" Right? |
s | And the Holomancer is operating the lights, right? |
s | We've got Kangor in Paladin who's an actual disco musician. |
s | It's a lot of fun kind of fleshing out characters a bit more in that way. |
s | Seeing their normal, behind-the-scenes lives. |
s | When they're not on board, battling for us, what are they up to? |
s | They have hobbies, too. They're just like us. |
s | Yeah. |
s | We've got a couple of spells here, too, |
s | that didn't quite fit the mold for any of the other sections, |
s | so let's go ahead and check these out. |
s | Oh, yeah. Dire of Despair. "Deal 3 damage to a character. |
s | If that kills it, summon a Demon from your deck." |
s | So that's like Bane of Doom, |
s | but from your deck instead of a random minion, |
s | so you can build out with some giant Demons and cheat them into play. |
s | -That's pretty cool. -Correct me if I'm wrong, Cora. |
s | I think the original name we had put in the sheet was Super Bane of Doom. |
s | Oh, goodness no. We're much more creative than that. |
s | -That's amazing. -We would never... |
s | Bane of Doom was one of my old favorite cards to play in Arena, |
s | because sometimes you just get a Doomguard |
s | and you just get your opponent for 5 damage. |
s | It was so good, but it's really not so good in today's Hearthstone, |
s | so we gave it a little bit of a facelift, a new name, |
s | an exciting new art piece, and it's much, much better now. |
s | I'm just going to call it Super Bane of Doom on stream every time. |
s | Dirge of Despair means nothing... means nothing to me. |
s | So, Synthesize is a new 1-Mana spell, |
s | this is another, just, like, super-value card. |
s | I want to play this, I want to get tons of free stuff, |
s | and just keep playing all kinds of Elementals. |
s | And fun fact. |
s | Earlier, I talked about there was a card |
s | that was called Tempo for the longest time. |
s | -This is the card. Yeah. -Ah. |
s | Because in my head, right, |
s | turn one, you set up your Tempo, |
s | and you play the Elementals on two and three. |
s | Get the card fill, yeah. |
s | And then no one like the name, so... |
s | I liked the name. |
s | I think Synthesize is also pretty sweet. |
s | Synthesize fits with the Mage theme for this set better than Tempo did. |
s | Tempo maybe would have fit, like, in Warlock. |
s | Sure. |
s | But it's a really great card |
s | and gives us the opportunity to hook into Elementals a bit more, |
s | which is something we like to do for Mage from time to time. |
s | -Three cards for 1-Mana? Are we crazy? -Yeah. |
s | No. |
s | I've got to think about what Elementals are available to decide how crazy you are. |
s | We've got a couple in this set. There's Rolling Stone for 2. |
s | -Oh, sure. -There's Static Waveform for 3. |
s | Oh, yeah. |
s | If you play this on one, into Rolling Stone on two... |
s | -That's why I made this card. -...you're cookin'. |
s | -That's why I made this card. -Yeah. It's really good. |
s | Taking ownership. I love it. I'm really excited. |
s | I see this Mixtape here. |
s | I love Thief cards, Burgle cards, I love Tess Greymane. |
s | This is an amazing enabler for Tess, |
s | assuming you're not, I guess, playing another Rogue, |
s | playing all neutral cards. |
s | But that looks like real fun to me. |
s | Yeah, this is just... |
s | I forget where this design came from, but it's just fun to slot into your decks. |
s | For Burgle decks it's even better, |
s | but just as a one-off, "Just give me that." |
s | Take your opponent's stuff. Not literally, but, "Let me borrow." |
s | Yeah. It can be a pretty wide array of cards. |
s | There might be something specific that you're looking for. |
s | But, yeah, if you're playing a Burgle-style deck, |
s | anything is usually pretty good to be able to bring back. |
s | And we're certainly losing some Burgle pieces with the rotation with this set, |
s | but I think Burgle is an archetype for Rogue |
s | that, historically, both players and devs just... It's really fun. |
s | It's a really enjoyable Rogue archetype, so we like to reinforce it when we can. |
s | If you assume your opponent's playing good cards, |
s | you're probably gonna get good cards. |
s | I'm gonna do the opposite. |
s | I'm gonna build really bad decks... |
s | And if my opponent wants to play Mixtape... |
s | ...so they draw your bad cards. |
s | Yeah. See? There's multiple angles here. |
s | -This is the dream. -Oh, my God. |
s | The dream-deck plan. |
s | And then, also, Melomania we saw teased earlier. |
s | I have to say, it kind of looked like us on the card art. |
s | Like, these three goofy characters. |
s | I don't know who's who, but I got vibes of us. |
s | I'm cool with that. |
s | I mean, I'm just along for the ride. |
s | I like being included. What can I say? I have bad FOMO. |
s | It's actually super interesting, because, Regis, |
s | I once saw a horse with watermelons for hair. |
s | It was a Melon Mane. Yeah? |
s | -Let me tell you, that is the... -I have to go. |
s | That was the flavor text for Melomania. |
s | We were so tired, |
s | and Cora came up with that, and we were like, "Done." |
s | -"Ship it." -"Do it." |
s | So, the whole flavor-text process is just, like... |
s | It's great. It's a wonderful, beautiful, incredible thing. |
s | But it is never designers at their best. |
s | So it's usually about Friday at, like, 4:00 p.m. |
s | We're tired. We're like, "We've got to get this done." |
s | Like, it's due tomorrow and... |
s | That's how you end up with treasures like that one. |
s | Sometimes you come up with Melo... |
s | Sometimes you come up with really, really good ones. |
s | And sometimes you come up with some of the flavor text of all time. |
s | Can't wait to see that in-game. |
s | What a way to end the stream, too. |
s | -What a great... -Oh, gosh. |
s | What a legacy to go out on. |
s | Okay, Regis, I have to ask. |
s | We threw a lot of cards at you today. |
s | Do you have a favorite one that we showed you? |
s | I think always Legendaries. |
s | I'm gonna go back to the beginning with Rhythm and Roots. |
s | Going back to your Rhythm and Roots? |
s | Melomania. |
s | You guys are grand. |
s | I mean, just the animations, the music, |
s | all that is so epic-feeling, playing cards like that. |
s | And I like big stats, too. |
s | So that plus, like, Drum Circle. |
s | Just get a big old board of Taunts, |
s | a big wall of Taunts, that's my playstyle, so I'm gonna say Rhythm and Roots. |
s | Do you guys have any standouts? |
s | I mean, I like all the cards, but that's a pretty lame answer. |
s | He's biased. |
s | I really like the Harmonic and Dissonant spells. |
s | I already talked about Harmonic Disco, just the texture that you get |
s | and how different it is with such a simple just change two numbers. |
s | I love those spells and I'm really excited to play them. |
s | I'll pick Finale. |
s | I think Finale is a really fun sort of simple keyword that we made, |
s | but I think, functionally, it feels really good to play. |
s | And I like some of the designs. |
s | I think there are some really interesting ones. |
s | -Do you like all the designs, Cora? -No. |
s | I have favorites and I always will. |
s | They're all good designs, Leo. |
s | But thank you so much, Regis, for joining us today. |
s | Even though we picked you up off the street, |
s | I feel like you came really prepared, so thank you so much for that. |
s | It's always fun to have you in the studio |
s | and get a chance to just talk some Hearthstone. |
s | I feel like we haven't done this in a really long time. |
s | Yeah, it's been fun nerding out, like, before we shoot, too. |
s | Just actually chatting about Hearthstone is always so great. |
s | You guys clearly love the game, and it's fun to share that with you. |
s | -Thank you for having me. -Awesome. |
s | Would you like to... tell the people where to find you? |
s | Yeah, you can find me on Twitch and YouTube, of course. |
s | Just Regis Killbin. |
s | You can go to RegisKillbin.com and it will take you right there. |
s | So come hang out and play some Hearthstone with me, |
s | build some bad decks. |
s | Oh, we're super excited to see what you're gonna build |
s | when Festival of Legends goes live. |
s | But remember, everybody, that the pre-purchase is live right now. |
s | It's only live until the set goes live, and that's gonna be on April 11. |
s | If you haven't logged in yet, make sure you log in, |
s | get your free copy of E.T.C. Band Manager and you can build out your sideboard, |
s | build out your band right now in Hearthstone. |
s | Thank you both so much for joining me today. |
s | It was wonderful getting the chance to chat Hearthstone with you. |
s | And thank you all for watching. We'll see you very soon in the Tavern. |
