I've been mulling over this thought for years. I studied multimedia design all my life and am currently doing my phd in narrative creation, so I have spent a lot of time looking at digital art. I've been playing Hearthstone since 2014, and I keep playing simply because I love the art.
Choose any one minion art from any set. Chances are, if its Attack is lower than its Health, its art will be wider at the bottom. If it has the same stats, it will look like a rectangle. And if its Attack is higher, then its art will have a more narrow base.
Let me make it more visual. I'm using minions from the entire Hearthstone history, since this seems to have been the case since the beginning. I'm also not tracing the silhouette exactly, just enough to illustrate my point. Finally, this does not include balance changes (buffs/nerfs/reworks) or alternative art (Signatures, Infused, Corrupted etc).
I have included some related minions on top of each other to illustrate an actual stat change. For example, [[Swift Messenger]]'s different forms depict this principle perfectly. In the same vein, the art of [[Disguised Wanderer]]'s token, [[Rustsworn Inquisitor]], works wonders to show the drastic change in stats.
If you see some preliminary art before a set is released, the artists offer various choices for each card. Interestingly enough, the artwork that fits the statline usually wins!
I find it really interesting, and I hope you do too!
