I like to play as women if I have the ability to in games, and being locked to less than half the available classes is a bit depressing. Coupled with the fact I don't enjoy minions or self damage builds, I'd basically only want to play Rogue which diminishes replayability in the game. Have the devs had any indication that there's any kind of character customization coming?

Official Answer:

Character visual customization is not something we will get in for 1.0. It is a feature that we hope to implement at some point. We don't have any sort of timeline on when it could happen. It will not be soon. So it is a matter of when, not if but it could be a long when.

Zero chance. Dev team is too small, and we're way too far into development now for that.

Character creation is rarely a part of Diablo clones.

Please be careful answering questions so absolutely if you aren't sure. It actually likely will happen at some point.

So is this a confirmation that more player customization is on the roadmap? Obviously there are priorities, but knowing that this is actually a feature the team wants to introduce and not just something to be said would go a long way.

Totally understand the shifting priorities and costs associated with this level of change, but it'd be awesome to see more customization and personalization of characters beyond a mechanical aspect. It helps drive a connection to the character and can encourage players to keep playing a character and improving them.

This is one of those "someday" features. We do eventually want to add it. It's not "on the roadmap" so to speak. We don't have any specific plans at all regarding it. We've gotten as far as:

"Hey should we have character customization?"

"Yea but it'll take way to long to do now."

"Ok, yea, someday then."

Literally nothing else has been done about it at all in any way. I don't expect it to be even mentioned internally at all until post 1.0.

I do expect it to come at some point but it's so far out that it's not even been prioritized.

Well, nothing has changed in the last 19 hours since I made the post you replied to.

It don‘t actually would need full customization but just to being able to select male or female so from a view of development to have fixed models at first would cost much less resources than a full customization feature. And I‘m sure all people would already be happy having the option to choose between genders!

A less feature rich version of just a character template selection with a few options would probably satisfy most people's desires and that feature would require less work than full customization. However, it's more of an, only 90% as difficult, situation than "much less resources". There are a lot more little things that go into this than you might think. The related systems just aren't set up to accept it at the moment and we aren't prepared to attempt it yet.
