This last week at work sucked, so much so that I barely noticed that the game had been updated with the new class. But I saw a few posts that were really enthusiastic about runemaster so last night I decided to give it a try.

I could say (as others rightly have) that runemaster is one of the deepest classes I have seen in an ARPG, or that it is filled with cool combinations waiting to be found, or that it has a considerable skill ceiling and over time it will feel really great to master all the combos. Those are all true.

But I had a terrible week, and so none of those things was what was so great about runemaster. What is great about runemaster is packing a bowl, lighting up, and then playing the phrase "FIRE ALL THE THINGS" distilled into an ARPG class. You can pay close attention and be intricate with your combos, or you can SMASH BUTTONS AND THEN RUNIC INVOCATION MOTHER f*ckER and fill the entire screen with projectiles and spirals and fireballs and storms and then cast another skill, which will trigger another skill, which will trigger another skill and fire off fifty projectiles while doing so and then make those projectiles explode in a nova that leaves behind a blizzard and then triggers the first three skills on your bar (from left to right).

This is what ARPGs are about, goddamn.
