[2023] How come this game's story is based on time travel yet it doesn’t have firearms or even crossbows?

Full disclosure: I haven’t played the game yet (waiting for the next discount), but from what I've heard the story campaign is basically about how you do time travel magics to save the world from dangerous foes. If that really is the case, then wouldn’t it make more sense for everyone to get better weapons than swords and sticks to fight them? Because even from historical standpoint firearms were invented 300 years before rapier was made, and crossbows were used and deployed in wars even before that.
